    3D smart cameras

The use of the LMI Gocator 3D smart camera, from Stemmer Imaging,  mounted on a robot arm offers a rapid and accurate way of making gap and flush measurements on automotive panels. These measurements allow correction and error proofing of any build problem; reduction of unexpected cost in repairing misassembled panels; reduction of waste from discarding damaged panels due to fit problems and even rejection of the vehicle if the panels are badly misaligned. With an integral laser line source, optics and camera, the Gocator allows simultaneous measurement of both the gap and flush at very high accuracy.

Gocator features a host of built-in measurement tools which are configured through a standard web browser. This allows the entire measurement sequence to be set up quickly and efficiently without any custom software programming. Gocator is supplied pre-calibrated and ready to use, straight from the box.

The Gocator is mounted on a robot that is used to position the sensor so that two panels are in the view of the sensor. Once the sensor is positioned, the robot will initiate a start signal to the sensor to begin measuring. The part of the laser line that falls on the flat part of the panel forms a natural reference for the measurements. The sensor will then perform the gap and the flush measurement and on completion signal the robot with the inspection results. The robot is programmed to move to a number of pre-defined inspection positions around the vehicle body. At each position the panels are measured against a specific target and tolerance.

The sensor is capable of storing thousands of configurations, allowing the robot to call for specific measurement parameters at each inspection position. The Gocator supports several industrial PLC protocols to control the sensor and to collect measurement results. Additionally, an open source Software Development Kit (SDK) is available for engineers who want to do their own programming

Smart vision systems and compact vision systems, for applications such as product and packaging inspection; code and label reading and verification, and 3D measurement of product volume to optimise packing and reduce packaging waste, will be shown by STEMMER IMAGING at Pro2Pac (17/20 Mar 2013 London GB).

Smart cameras feature on-board image processing so do not need a PC in order to operate.
The Gocator 3D camera from LMI Technologies Inc offers a host of 3D measurement capabilities such as product volume, surface flatness and groove measurements and can be used in direct packaging applications or in the manufacture of packaging materials. Product volume measurements allow the contents of cartons and containers to be optimised to avoid wasting valuable space. Groove measurement can be used wherever grooves are essential to a product’s performance such as plastic container lids. Surface flatness measurement is ideal for web applications such as paper or plastic film production.

The BOA range of smart cameras includes the BOA, BOA Pro and BOA IDR models and offers a multitude of product and packaging inspection capabilities for product quality and packaging integrity as well as 1D and 2D code reading and verification capabilities. New capabilities for 3D smart camera

The latest version of the Gocator series of 3D smart cameras from LMI Technologies, marketed by Stemmer Imaging, has introduced a host of new features to further enhance its performance in machine vision applications. These include whole part measurement including volumetric measurements, 2D surface inspection, Modbus TCP support and a number of triggering enhancements.

The new whole part feature makes factory automation easier and less expensive by eliminating the multiple components and software engineering required for automated part scanning and detection. By automatically detecting the start and end point of a single or multiple components traveling along a conveyor, the whole part can be scanned and measured. With discrete parts segmented into 3D cloud datasets, Gocator can now perform volumetric measurements such as volume, centroid, orientation, etc to provide information on dimensions, location, and orientation.

Support for record/playback is also provided and it is possible access whole part data using a Software Development Kit. This new mode offers comprehensive 3D displays including pseudo color visualization of each part as well as data export for off-line analysis.

2D Imaging is now possible by extracting laser intensity information to build a 2D image for use with standard 2D processing tools, giving the benefit of 2D visual inspection. Using laser intensity to produce a grey scale image calibrated to actual dimensions, this Intensity Output data can be combined with 2D image processing libraries to easily identify surface defects and patterns including barcodes, enabling Gocator to inspect surface features in the same way as a traditional 2D camera system.

Gocator sensors can now also “plug in” to the factory floor via Ethernet communication over Modbus TCP protocol. PLC connected Gocators integrate more easily and cost effectively into existing factory automation systems. In addition, multi-language communication has been introduced for ease of use. The system can also automatically indicate if there is any data loss due to incorrect set-up of the camera

Gocator now also supports gated triggering and various encoder tracking methods. This provides great flexibility when using Gocator on a robotic arm (to control when 3D scans are acquired) or when using a conveyor with an encoder. Bi-directional encoder triggering allows Gocator to scan an object while it is moving in either direction on a conveyor, thus reducing production time when an item needs to be scanned multiple times or in different directions. Gated Triggering allows Gocator to easily integrate into systems that use a PLC or photocell to trigger a scan sequence.
