New converters boost low power from panels.

Two DIN Rail mounted DC-DC converters have been launched by Antaira Technologies. These are able to boost the 9-36VDC input power typical of control cabinets to a maximum adjustable output of 53VDC and either up to 480 watts (DTD-480-0953-T) or 360 watts (DTD-360-0953-T).

"In automation networks, 24 VDC in the panel is sufficient as input power for Ethernet switches and other devices with PoE that can internally boost low power up to the necessary 48 to 52 VDC," said Henry Martel, Field Application Engineer, Antaira Technologies. "However, there are network devices requiring higher voltage that cannot increase low power on their own, such as larger non-PoE Ethernet switches with high port counts. Our new DTD product line acts as an external booster to those devices, giving engineers and administrators more options in the equipment they can install where space is a critical parameter."

Exceptionally rugged and compact, the new DTD power converters are shielded from industrial environments within an IP30 metal housing able to withstand a temperature range of -40°C to 75°C, along with exposure to shock and vibration. With an eye on minimizing downtime, the converters are safeguarded against poor power quality with protection against damaging short circuits, overload, reverse polarity, and under voltage. A built-in SVR allows adjustment of output voltage to address specific device needs.

Antaira DTD converters are not limited to one application but are designed to resolve power problems across a series of markets. Both the DTD-480-0953-T and DTD-360-0953-T are optimized for diverse power needs, ranging from factory automation and video surveillance to solar and mobile networks. While the converters are not a direct substitute for a solar panel power regulator, they can help boost the power from a 12- or 24-volt DC battery power storage to a more useful 48-52 VDC compatible with other electronic devices such as laptops. When installed on buses the converters will not only boost power but also clean up the power that may be dirty from old alternators or other electronics on the same circuit, making them precise and stable for better performance.

Rear mounting option.

In addition to solutions for the Han® B and Han-Eco® B standards, rear-mountable interfaces for trouble-free data transmission are also available via the Han® B/EMC Rear-Fit from Harting. Simplified handling speeds up the process of equipping control cabinets with interfaces and offers new installation options to manufacturers of robotics and automation technology.

The new Han® rear-mount connectors are compatible with previous connector generations. All contact inserts and modules from the Han® line can be used without restriction in the new rear-fit mounted housings. ‘Effective immediately, manufacturers of robotics and automation technology now have a new alternative in the Han® portfolio,’ says Gero Degner, Technical Application Manager Installation Technology Han® at Harting Electric.

Han® industrial connectors are particularly suitable for environments that require the simplest possible installation yet place high demands on component robustness. Until now, installing control cabinet interfaces required cables to be routed through a cutout in the outer panel. Assembling the inserts then took place outside the control cabinet.

With the new Han® solutions, the prefabricated inserts can be snapped directly into the bulkhead housing from inside the control cabinet, resulting in both time and cost savings.

The contact inserts are mounted in a plastic mounting frame that snaps securely into the rear-fit mounted aluminum housing and, if necessary, the frame is just as easy to disassemble. The attachment of the PE connection to the metal housing is structurally ensured. To achieve an IP65/66 degree of protection and to protect against UV radiation and ozone emissions, a flange rubber seal runs the whole way around the rear-fit mounted housing.

The rear-fit option makes the assembly of prefabricated units more efficient. Connections for control cabinets and machine modules can largely be pre-assembled separately. This results in cost savings.

In fact, it is possible to achieve time savings of up to two thirds. A new web-based return on investment (ROI) calculator helps customers accurately gauge how quickly a Perforex purchase will pay for itself.

Perforex machining centres from Rittal Automation Systems are tailored to the challenges of switchgear manufacturing. They are ideal for the automated production of bore holes, cut-outs and threads in mounting plates, enclosure doors and side panels. Perforex systems are suitable for all materials typically found in switchgear, including steel, aluminium, copper and plastics. Moreover, an automatic tool changer allows multiple tasks to be performed in a single operation, without the need for human intervention. Importing wiring layout and electrical engineering data from Eplan Pro Panel design software further enhances productivity.

Proven efficiency gains under real-world conditions
On-line calculator
Fill, a mid-sized Austrian-based engineering company, acquired a Perforex system in 2016. This has enabled a two-thirds reduction in the time needed to machine flat parts for enclosures. Seamless data integration has a key role to play: electrical engineering and wiring layout information generated within Eplan Pro Panel software is transferred to the Perforex system for immediate use in manufacturing. Fill produces approximately 2,000 housings and enclosures annually.

In addition, Rittal has created an online calculator that demonstrates how a Perforex system can deliver a rapid and tangible return on investment even for low production volumes. Customers simply enter the typical manufacturing quantity, current machining cycle time, and labour rates per hours, and the web-based tool computes the corresponding payback period for a variety of Perforex models.

Video wall for control rooms.

A new 4K DLP® Laser Video Wall with Xtra Slim form factor from Delta, is ideal for control room applications. Its 4K 70” cubes have a depth of 560mm, making them the thinnest DLP® laser cube in the world. Furthermore, it offers unmatched brightness of 2,400 lumens at ≥98% uniformity, creating yet another industry benchmark.
Each display is equipped with multiple laser modules that work in tandem, not only creating stunning visuals, but also achieving higher energy efficiency and longer operating life, thus ensuring they are virtually maintenance-free.

This innovation provides industry-leading 4K engine resolution (3840 x 2160), which is four times that of standard HD (1920 x 1080). This means that users get four times the data content that could be achieved in the same size of HD video wall cube for monitoring and surveillance purposes. This is hugely important given the growing market of 4K IP cameras to support surveillance and monitoring operations worldwide. As a result, DLP® display units need to match the 4K cameras and source device resolutions to achieve wider surveillance areas.

The 4K DLP® surveillance area is much bigger than HD DLP®, helping operators maintaining a round-the-clock vigil to monitor, analyse and act on any suspicious activity. These advantages also translate to public safety applications, whereby the monitoring map can be four times wider than a HD DLP® monitoring area. In fact, almost control room application will benefit, including traffic monitoring, disaster control and broadcasting.

Along with clearer and more distinct picture quality, Delta’s ground-breaking Xtra Slim 4K DLP® Laser Video wall offers many advanced functions. For instance, when the monitored area is still in HD resolution, displaying on a 4K DLP® display is not a problem. In fact, it is possible to open four original HD resolution PiP (picture-in-picture) windows within the same screen.

The Delta Xtra Slim 4k Laser Video wall can accept 4K input signals at 60Hz and pixel clock frequencies up to 594MHz, while support capability is offered for DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 interfaces. Further advantages include wide viewing angle and true redundancy. In addition, the system carries IP6X certification thanks to its built-in intelligent system, Intelli-Sense, a unique and intelligent auto correction system that ensures enhanced system performance and long life without external intervention.

Alternative to cabinets for instrumentation!

A new high capacity, easy-access enclosure from Intertec provides plant engineers with a versatile alternative to free-standing cabinets for the environmental protection of field-based process instrumentation. Developed at the request of a Russian oil refinery, the enclosures are made from tough glass reinforced polyester (GRP) and include highly insulated options for use in extremely cold climates. They also offer more space than typical instrument enclosures, to allow plant personnel to use gloved hands when accessing the equipment. Typical applications include housing differential pressure flowmeters and process transmitters in refineries, petrochemical and chemical processing plants.

The new enclosures are the latest addition to their Diabox range of instrumentation protection solutions, which are moulded two-part enclosures that open diagonally to provide easy access for operating and maintenance staff.

The new Diabox 277 enclosure measures 600 x 750 x 600 mm (HxWxD) and has an internal volume of approximately 277 litres, depending on the level of insulation specified. Manufactured from a high-performance grade of GRP using a hot-press moulding process, the standard versions of the enclosure provide an exceptionally robust and rigid housing; they have a wall thickness of 6 mm yet typically only weigh 18 kg. This combination of rigidity and low weight means that the enclosures can be mounted on small-footprint pipe stands or clamped directly to process pipes, making them ideal for protecting instruments in locations where free-standing cabinets would be impractical due to the amount of ground space they require.

For applications that require protection against extremely cold conditions, Intertec produces an ‘arctic’ version of Diabox 277 that is suitable for use in temperatures as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius. This enclosure is manufactured from a proprietary composite ‘sandwich’ material, comprising inner and outer walls of GRP enclosing a closed-cell polyurethane (PU) foam core. The inner GRP wall provides a smooth, easy-to-clean finish. It also protects the foam against accidental physical damage, such as might be caused during equipment installation, routine maintenance or cleaning, thereby maintaining the enclosure’s thermal integrity and performance.

Despite its large size, the Diabox 277 has a very low heat transfer coefficient of 13 W/K, which minimises the power rating and operational cost of any freeze protection, anti-condensation, or temperature regulation heating that may be fitted. In the case of the ‘arctic’ version of the enclosure, its GRP-PU foam-GRP walls provide uniform and near-perfect insulation, resulting in an exceptionally low heat transfer coefficient of just 2.4 W/K.

All Intertec Diabox enclosures feature a two-part design with hinges on their top edge and a diagonal opening, to provide a highly ergonomic and self-contained field protection solution. The lower half of the enclosure houses the instrumentation – process and electrical connections are generally made via the rear and/or bottom surface – while the upper half functions as a fully retained lid.

The new enclosure features a continuous double seal, comprising a mechanical tongue and groove plus a flexible silicon insert strip, which is incorporated in the mating edges to ensure high integrity closure. As standard, Diabox 277 enclosures are rated to IP65 against the ingress of contaminants such as dust and moisture; for more severe applications involving prolonged exposure to driving snow or rain, IP66/67 versions are available. The 'arctic' version is also available with an IP68 rating.

Hundreds of accessories are available to configure the enclosure for specific applications. Among the options are viewing windows available in acrylic-, safety- or insulation-glass variants, and a special insulated adapter to prevent heat loss at the point where impulse lines and heat tracing cables enter the enclosure. The inner and outer layers of the composite material can be produced using an electrically conductive form of GRP to comply with the antistatic requirements of the international IEC EN 60079-0 standard for equipment used in hazardous environments where explosive gas or dust may be present. For applications that demand purging, Intertec offers a specially sealed Ex p version that is prepared for pressurisation in accordance with the IEC EN 60079-2 standard.

The GRP material that Intertec uses for its Diabox enclosures has multiple advantages for plant designers seeking to protect field instrumentation against environmental effects, especially for long lifecycle applications and where harsh media or severe local climatic conditions might be encountered. GRP is inherently inert and immune to damage from most common chemicals and petrochemicals. It has a similar strength to steel, but weighs some four times less, and will not corrode in the presence of salt – which is why it is increasingly becoming the enclosure material of choice for offshore and coastal oil and gas applications. GRP is also fire retardant and has very low thermal conductivity – making it easier to implement efficient, condensation-free enclosures.

The latest addition means that Intertec’s Diabox range of enclosures now includes six models, with capacities ranging from 27 up to 277 litres, enabling plant designers to choose the optimum size for their application – for single or multiple process instruments.

Controlling climate!

Rittal’s new self-adhesive thermal labels allow the internal maximum temperature of an enclosure to be quickly and accurately ascertained at a simple glance.

Generally, the life expectancy of a simple capacitor doubles for each 10°C lower operating temperature. By utilising the self-adhesive labels the internal temperature of the enclosure can be both easily and accurately measured thereby ascertaining whether a climate control solution is necessary.

Rittal’s climate control products are specifically designed to maintain electrical components at their optimum temperature and ambient conditions within an enclosed space. As well as preventing equipment from overheating they also protect the contents against hot or cold temperatures, condensation, dust dirt and corrosive substances.

Utilising their specialist equipment and knowledge, Rittal are also able to undertake thermographic surveys to identify areas in which equipment may be at risk, due to high temperatures, in a written report supported with thermal images.

The wide voltage option is available across a wide range of Marl panel indicators, in all the popular colours including red, green, blue, yellow and clear. Lens options included smoked, diffused or water clear. A key feature of Marl LEDs is their long life and physical endurance. Most are specified with a service life of 100,000 hours and can be supplied with full environmental protection including sealing to IP67. They are assembled in robust anodised aluminium housing, and are offered with a range of mounting options to suit the customer’s enclosure. Electrically, Marl LEDs can be supplied with reverse polarity protection, or as fully bipolar components. Terminations available include flying leads, solder tags, screw terminals or solder pins.

Since Marl assembles all panel LED components at its manufacturing site in Cumbria (GB), it is able to offer a high degree of customisation. Specific requirements in terms of electrical characteristics, housing configuration and other specifications can be readily accommodated. The Marl standard and bespoke panel indicator range includes components suitable for specialist and demanding environments, including high vibration, marine, and portable applications.

Integrated mounting layout in 3D

Integrated mounting layout in electrical and fluid engineering now in 3D
CAE systems are usually designed for 2D. EPLAN now has a 3D module, EPLAN Pro Panel, for efficient layout planning in electrical engineering and fluid power. With EPLAN Pro Panel you can define a virtual 3D prototype of the mounting layout independently of the electrical or fluid schematic. Users benefit from associative views in the mounting layout and optimal utilisation of the space available in the enclosure.

Mounting panels, housings or enclosures can be dimensioned optimally so that the costs are reduced. Consistent data for all the participating engineering disciplines ensure that the workflow towards the production is also efficient. Designing on the basis of the EPLAN platform is supported fully in both electrical and fluid engineering. This applies to mounting panels that are planned with EPLAN Electric P8 as well as for hydraulics units designed with EPLAN Fluid. Attrition losses through data conversion between the disciplines are a thing of the past.

The optional Pro Panel module offers all the functions for equipping mounting panels or for defining power units and valve blocks on the basis of the systems of the EPLAN platform. Standard-compliant mounting layout and production drawings are easy to realise using associative model views and the many possibilities of the EPLAN platform. Changes in the 3D mounting layout are naturally taken into consideration in the corresponding model views and legends.

In the course of mounting layout all the devices used in the schematic or in the parts pre-selection are displayed in a list or tree structure. When placing elements, the system checks whether the placement is on the correct mounting panel. This immediately indicates which items from the schematic have yet to be placed on the mounting panel. The 3D mounting layout can optionally be the leading factor or it can be equipped correctly from the schematic. Placing of the components using the new EPLAN eTouch technology is remarkably simple.

Provision of powerful designing aids is important for the correct implementation of the mounting layout and a guarantee for higher planning reliability in the product engineering process. EPLAN Pro Panel is designed to operate within manufacturer specifications and facilitates an exact position check of devices, wire ducts and mounting rails.
