Air quality assessments with AI!

Airly has announced the launch of a new AI tool that has been developed to revolutionise the work of air quality consultants, and dramatically accelerate the production of air quality assessments in planning and development proposals.

“Working closely with air quality consultants, we have utilised the power of AI to dispense with the requirement to manually search for local geographic, environmental and transport data and to then generate reports,” explains Airly Product Lead Marta Steiner. “These are time-consuming, repetitive, and frankly boring tasks, so it makes a lot of sense to automate them and free up consultants for work that actually needs their expertise.”

The tool has been developed in strict accordance with the guidance provided by Environmental Protection UK and the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) in their document, "Land-Use Planning & Development Control: Planning for Air Quality", which has ensured that Airly AI follows all the relevant standards.

Airly CEO Wiktor Warchalowski says: “We believe that the impact of this new AI tool in air quality will be similar to that of CAD software in the engineering sector. With the benefit of Airly AI, air quality consultants will lower costs and save time. In addition, their work will become more interesting and enjoyable, allowing them to optimise the use of their skills and experience, whilst delivering faster outcomes from planning applications.”

Equipment investment strategies put to the test!

Electro Rent outlines how companies can combat the impacts of the current economic challenges and mitigate risks set out in several recent reports from prominent industry commentators

In light of current economic conditions predicted by numerous recent reports, electronic test equipment specialist Electro Rent has advice for any companies looking to mitigate this financial pressure when sourcing the equipment they need. The argument in favour of test equipment rental is already compelling and growing in favour across the industry spectrum, but in uncertain economic times, there arises even more need to replace legacy-based purchasing strategies with a smarter way forward.

With economic headwinds driven by factors such as higher costs, inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, the EU’s recent forecast report outlines the potential impact on new investment: “Heightened uncertainty around the unfolding of the geopolitical situation and its impact on the demand outlook are set to weigh on companies’ investment decisions and delay the realisation of investment plans.”

A May 2022 report by Deloitte Insights already warned that “the negative effect is particularly pronounced for companies’ operating margins, which are under pressure from a higher cost base due to rising energy and commodity prices”. In June 2022, the OECD’s Economic Outlook said that growth is set to be markedly weaker than expected in almost all economies. Many of the hardest-hit countries are in Europe, which is highly exposed to current market challenges, including the impacts of the energy crisis and inflation. All of this could impact on accessing the electronic test equipment that companies require, on time and on budget.

More and more companies are therefore turning to rental test equipment as a cost-effective yet reliable means of meeting the requirements of budget-conscious, lead-time restricted projects. Renting not only provides immediate access to the latest test equipment technologies from all major brands, but it also keeps projects on track and avoids the typical risks associated with capital expenditure, such as a large hit to balance sheet liquidity, asset depreciation and slow return-on-investment. Renting also allows companies to easily ramp up and down in line with demand. Moreover, those renting can change their test equipment whenever necessary, providing the flexibility to support an ever-evolving industrial and economic landscape.

Electro Rent has extensive experience in advising customers on solutions that help them navigate different financial situations in a safe and effective way. Based on over half a century of managing test equipment investments - amid a broad spread of economic trading conditions - the company knows how to supply this equipment in a flexible manner, minimising the potential consequences of an economic downturn and keeping test schedules going without the need for capital investment.

“The key is maintaining business agility and ensuring sufficient flexibility to deal with fluctuating economic conditions,” explains George Acris, Vice President Marketing EMEA at Electro Rent. “High-end electronic test equipment is available that many are not even aware can be procured on a rental basis. For example, by using Electro Rent, customers can deploy the latest spectrum or network analyser for a high-frequency test just for the period required. No more, no less.”

Companies can achieve this ambition simply by paying as they go from their operating budget. As a point of note, it is possible to rent equipment of this type for periods as short as one week. Moreover, the equipment is available immediately, which is a huge advantage in the current climate of long lead times, avoiding any frustrating project delays that can derail product launch dates.

“Many companies in defence and electronic goods development, as well as those in telecom installation and maintenance, for example, are already using this concept effectively and saving an average of 25% on their equipment costs while being able to deploy as needed,” says Acris. “This strategy is a proven way of keeping pace with the latest test equipment technologies, retaining total flexibility to adapt and react in line with economic uncertainty.”

Evidence is building from expert commentators that economic challenges continue to lay ahead for some time to come, so now has never been a better time for companies to look again at how they procure equipment. Electro Rent has some very effective options available to help mitigate any challenges that the economy may present moving forward.

Integrated sample planning & scheduling.

Bringing new levels of field sampling optimization, compliance and field data collection, Autoscribe Informatics has announced the integration of Trilogy TAPS sample planning and scheduling management software with its Matrix Gemini configurable laboratory information management system (LIMS). Integration of field data collection and laboratory activities is especially useful in water, environmental, waste and similar industries.
As a leading global provider of LIMS, Autoscribe understands the value of configurable data and process management systems in the laboratory, but as Autoscribe Managing Director Steve Boother says: “By integrating TAPS with our systems, we can provide a complete solution for the field-based collection of environmental or biological samples and associated data. As well as managing field-based sampling, test results collected in the field using Trilogy’s android mobile application can now pass seamlessly to the laboratory; avoiding lost results and transcription errors while maintaining a full audit trail of actions for regulatory purposes.”

The TAPS and HAND products were developed by Trilogy, a software systems and services company that shares Autoscribe’s mission to develop fit-for-purpose, configurable, future-proof database management applications. Trilogy Managing Director Alex Dare says: “Integration with Matrix Gemini LIMS allows field sampling information and on-site test result data to be in the laboratory even before the samples themselves. This reduces turn-around time and improves efficiency, whilst providing users with far greater control and visibility of their sampling and analysis activities.”
Developed in partnership with field sampling organizations, TAPS provides the ability to manage and optimize the scheduling and collection of field samples. Complex planning tools allow random site selection and timing as well as route optimization so samplers can work more efficiently. Route optimization saves time and fuel, and by effectively organizing the collection of diverse but geographically close samples the use of sampling resources is optimized.

Growing regulatory pressure across the globe is driving the requirement for fully traceable planning, collection and reporting of field-based samples and results. In addition, customers and stakeholders expect results to be delivered in the fastest possible time, and managers need to be able to accurately determine the cost of sampling operations. The integration of TAPS with Matrix Gemini LIMS is therefore a major step forward in meeting these new challenges.

Mobile friendly
The TAPS capability is significantly enhanced by ‘HAND’ which is an Android based program that delivers several significant advantages. HAND avoids the need for hard-copy worksheets and handwritten results. It also provides a higher level of data quality assurance by automatically checking the validity of entered information, and assigning date/time and GPS data to sampling and on-site test results. Analytical result limits may be defined to gain immediate on-site verification of any problems while the sampler is still at the location. Importantly, for both samplers and managers, registered users of HAND can log in and view data 24/7. Fully integrated with TAPS and Matrix Gemini LIMS, HAND helps ensure data integrity and a complete electronic audit trail.

Integration with Matrix Gemini LIMS
Samplers have the ability to enter results in the field and on return, bar-coded sample bottles can be scanned and their associated data and results automatically imported to Matrix Gemini LIMS. Any ‘failures to collect’ can be identified and rescheduled. Once the samples are in the lab and the field data has been transferred, Matrix Gemini manages any further laboratory-based testing that is required. Once the lab tests have been completed, Matrix may automatically update TAPS.

Planning for water & waste!

Krohne has renewed the “Planning Tool for generation of tender documents for industrial process measurement”. The free online tool for easy compilation of tender documents for process instrumentation now features a new user interface for fast and easy navigation.

Planning engineers for water or wastewater plants and systems face a very complex task as they have to align changing requirements with new technological developments and resulting possibilities. In terms of process instrumentation, the planner needs to be familiar not only with the most important technologies, but must know about the advantages and disadvantages of all measuring methods that can be applied to a certain measuring point. Given the wealth of alternatives, many planners find it difficult to choose a particular meter.

Here, the company offers the the renewed “Planning Tool for generation of tender documents for industrial process measurement”: visually grouped into typical processes such as water abstraction, water treatment, public sewage network or sludge treatment, it comprises process instrumentation for typical measuring points. Thereby, it provides full planning security as all presented devices are available. It also includes various desalination technologies, which is of particular interest to planners who work on international water supply projects.

After selecting a measuring point, tender texts, data sheets, operating instructions and CAD drawings can be quickly created and saved. A download of the tender texts is possible as a Word, Excel or GAEB file. Device-specific downloads, datasheets, manuals and short-form descriptions can be accessed. 2D and 3D CAD drawings are available in DWG, IGES, SAT, STEP and SLDPRT formats as well as calculation software.

The Planning Tool is web-based thus local installation is not required.

CNC machining centres!

CNC machining centres, such as Perforex from Rittal Automation Systems, deliver significantly improved efficiency when processing panels in comparison to manual approaches. In fact, it is possible to achieve time savings of up to two thirds. A new web-based return on investment (ROI) calculator helps customers accurately gauge how quickly a Perforex purchase will pay for itself.

Perforex machining centres from Rittal Automation Systems are tailored to the challenges of switchgear manufacturing. They are ideal for the automated production of bore holes, cut-outs and threads in mounting plates, enclosure doors and side panels. Perforex systems are suitable for all materials typically found in switchgear, including steel, aluminium, copper and plastics. Moreover, an automatic tool changer allows multiple tasks to be performed in a single operation, without the need for human intervention. Importing wiring layout and electrical engineering data from Eplan Pro Panel design software further enhances productivity.

Proven efficiency gains under real-world conditions
On-line calculator
Fill, a mid-sized Austrian-based engineering company, acquired a Perforex system in 2016. This has enabled a two-thirds reduction in the time needed to machine flat parts for enclosures. Seamless data integration has a key role to play: electrical engineering and wiring layout information generated within Eplan Pro Panel software is transferred to the Perforex system for immediate use in manufacturing. Fill produces approximately 2,000 housings and enclosures annually.

In addition, Rittal has created an online calculator that demonstrates how a Perforex system can deliver a rapid and tangible return on investment even for low production volumes. Customers simply enter the typical manufacturing quantity, current machining cycle time, and labour rates per hours, and the web-based tool computes the corresponding payback period for a variety of Perforex models.

Increasing the speed of process

Swiss company W. Althaus AG, a full-service provider for industrial automation that delivers around 5000 switch cabinets per year all over the world, uses the EPLAN platform as the backbone for data consistency. The recent migration to EPLAN Pro Panel, the 3D system for switchgear construction brought about a quantum leap in terms of process optimisation.

Every year, the industrial automation specialists from Althaus deliver around 5000 switch cabinets, from single and serial control units to prototypes, and around 800 small control units all over the world. The fully automated float glass production line in South Korea with round-the-clock availability is just as much a part of the customer portfolio as Swiss solar systems or conveyor systems in the food industry. The family-run company boasts around 110 employees and provides a comprehensive range of services, from project planning, hardware and software development to delivery, commissioning and final acceptance. Control cabinets, terminal strips, operating panels and control panels are all manufactured in-house, in a production area that is more than 6000m² in size. Cable and wire fabrication also takes place in-house. The Althaus designers deal with all electrical engineering using EPLAN Electric P8 and EPLAN Pro Panel, the 3D system for switchgear construction.

Integrative processes, including 3D data
"We do not make any demands of our customers with regard to the materials and components that are used or the integration of device control units," explains Marco Schneider, Company Manager of W. Althaus AG. However, this requires careful maintenance of complex product databases, which is easy to accomplish with EPLAN: The material data of the majority of manufacturers can be imported directly in 3D, and synchronisation with customer databases can be carried out even more effectively using a solution that has been programmed in-house.
With ATHAS, the "Althaus Terminal Handling System", the company has developed a manufacturer-independent universal solution for the automatic production of terminal strips using robots based on EPLAN Pro Panel. This is now being offered to terminal suppliers and other switch cabinet manufacturers.

"We are committed to achieving the highest degree of automation possible," says Schneider. For him, the EPLAN platform is therefore not just engineering and ECAD software, but the data consistency backbone within the company. Projects that have already been completed can be retrieved from the databases and reused. Predefined modules, components and sub-projects, including the necessary items and materials, can be stored in the EPLAN database as macros and transferred to follow-up projects. The ERP system is also linked to EPLAN – the automatically generated and adapted bills of materials mean that materials that are no longer available in the company's own warehouse can be ordered in good time and exactly in accordance with requirements.

New dimension: EPLAN Pro Panel
Operations manager Marco Schneider in
front of the switch cabinets
The migration of EPLAN Cabinet to the new EPLAN Pro Panel – W. Althaus AG was one of the first Swiss companies to introduce this – brought a quantum leap with regard to process optimisation. With EPLAN Pro Panel the company is now consistently working with 3D data throughout the EPLAN Platform. To Roland Ackermann, head of electrical engineering, the advantages are obvious – the EPLAN Platform has now been optimally integrated, the removal of previously required intermediate steps during data transfers has saved time and avoided mistakes, performance capability has improved significantly and operation has become easier, even for beginners. "Simulation has become better because of the 3D graphics, you can see immediately what has to go where, and collision points can be avoided from the outset," said Ackermann. Above all, he and his team can work much more flexibly. “Because all project disciplines are networked on a uniform data basis and changes and updates are registered consistently through to the bills of materials, I can also start with the device-based mounting layout and transfer over the information for the circuit diagram and the connection definition later – almost like Windows, using Drag&Drop."

Consistent through to production
Operations manager Marco Schneider particularly appreciates the communication strength of the EPLAN solutions. In metalworking, for example, for flat mounting plates, Althaus uses a fast laser cutting machine with a thread cutting head as an unusual additional, as well as a 4-axis CNC machining centre for plate, box and housing machining. The machining data that is required is generated in EPLAN Pro Panel and read directly into the machine control unit. Not just electrical diagrams, material lists, terminal plans and layout plans have to be generated using EPLAN, but also the machining data for the systems that cut channels and rails to length, the wiring assistant and the previously mentioned automatic terminal strip assembly machines. The automatic cable fabrication system also receives the information that is needed about cable lengths, wires, bundling and labelling directly from EPLAN on the basis of the circuit diagram and the 3D cable routing data, and uses it to create cable bundles that are ready for installation and clearly labelled. "When our production employees start with the layout, everything is there and pre-equipped; they basically assemble a "construction kit" and do not have to spend time looking for materials and jobs in the assembly plans," summarises Schneider.

This ability pays for itself even in single quantities and it increases the pace and eliminates mistakes, explains the operations manager. In addition, time-consuming and expensive corrections can be avoided and personnel can be deployed more flexibly. This high degree of preparation means that repeated and routine tasks can also be carried out by non-specialist employees. At Althaus the employees work in teams and deal with layouts, wiring and quality control; testing takes place manually and automatically with the aid of the "Panel Scout" test control unit which has been developed in-house.

Speed of process increased by 30%
The standardisation and automation of processes, which should be as extensive as possible, has reduced throughput times within the company by approximately a third by using the EPLAN platform, estimates Schneider.

Planning & verifying switchgear

Rittal’s latest Power Engineering planning software v6.0 provide comprehensive support in planning and verifying standardised Ri4Power switchgear, as required by the new IEC 61439-1/-2 standard for low voltage switchgear. Main features of the new standard include extensive verification of the design of switchgear created by original switchgear manufacturer, as well as exact details of the rated currents of switching devices. The new standard offers major benefits, both for the manufacturers of switchgear, as well as for customers and users.

With the extension of design certifications, features are defined that increase the quality of low-voltage switchgear. Their interfaces to external peripherals are specified and defined in more detail. Design of low-voltage becomes easier and safer because the influence of the enclosure and protection category on the switching equipment is given greater consideration than before.

Using Rittal Power Engineering a suitable switching device can be selected as early as the low-voltage switchgear preparation stage that bears the current needed by the circuit. The protection category and the mounting location within the unit are also taken into account. Similarly, the software provides the appropriate design verification at the push of a button. The engineering tool offers check-lists with which the switchgear manufacturer can check all the requirements that have to be considered during the planning and performance of the switchgear.

Rittal Power Engineering supports users with both the Ri4Power modular system for low voltage switchgear, as well as with the low-voltage switchgear that consists of the TS 8 enclosure system and the RiLine60 modular busbar system.

Technology investment to be "Best of the best!"

The recently completed implementation of Aegis Manufacturing Operations Software allows Concept 2Market, Inc. (C2M) to improve efficiencies and quality by streamlining and controlling process planning and launch, process tracking and control, and quality and test management.

“Factory information visibility and process-wide control is core to competitiveness. We utilise technology to connect data to all of our factory processes”, said Todd Kirkeeng, President of C2M.

Aegis acts as the bridge from Engineering to Manufacturing by readying products for launch. They provide support for virtually every CAD type and simplifies programming of the machines that use the CAD data. Ensuring the documentation is revision controlled, is at the operator’s workstation, and provides the detail required to build quality product is now an automated process. And, it is achieved with the environment in mind through a paperless system, which is a step towards one of C2M’s corporate objectives.

Determining where all the work orders are located throughout the factory is now a matter of accessing real-time information. Customer service often depends on having the information they need when they need it. Aegis allows C2M to track WIP progress and provide predictive job completion times, which is important to C2M’s customers.

Quality has to be a “given” in any manufacturing process. The Aegis software provides C2M with the required information to build the product correctly and to verify the quality while the work is still in process so any corrections can be made

The Aegis software collects data and puts it into reports, visualizations, and real-time dashboards that are used by C2M to constantly improve quality and efficiency. Traceability of every product is also achieved and allows failures and rejections to be tracked down and eliminated before they become an issue for the customer.

C2M’s CEO and owner, Maria Kirkeeng, summed it up the best when she said, “We want to be the best of the best, which is why we’ve made this investment in technology. We’re taking the necessary steps to constantly improve our processes and efficiency so we can provide our customers with a superior product.”
