New possibilities for industrial wireless solutions.

A new, upgraded version of their popular Anybus Wireless Bridge has been introduced by HMS. The Anybus Wireless Bridge II supports up to 400 meters of reliable wireless communication, and can communicate via both Bluetooth or WLAN. It is ideal for replacing Ethernet cabling in hard-to-reach or hazardous locations.

Cable replacement or access point
By using the Anybus Wireless Bridge II, automation engineers can achieve new and smarter network infrastructures. Often used as an Ethernet cable replacement (point-to-point communication), the Wireless Bridge II can also be used as an access point for several WLAN/Bluetooth nodes such as smartphones or tablets within range. In the process, savings are achieved thanks to the reduced amount of Ethernet cabling.

What’s new?
The new Anybus Wireless Bridge II supports a longer wireless range (400 meters, 437 yards) and an even more powerful integrated wireless antenna. It is easily set up via push-button configuration or via the new integrated web interface. Asset management consultancy appointments.

The MCP Consulting Group has appointed Dave Porrill  to further expand the company's skills in the field of production equipment maintenance, reliability strategies and systems within the FMCG environment. His remit is to grow the MCP portfolio of regional and national accounts.

Successful fieldbus event report.

The Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt am Main (D) was the venue for the 5th PI Conference just completed. Around 300 participants got information about trends and innovations related to the technologies of PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) in a very successful event .

The numerous presentations, workshops, and industry talks centered on the role of PI technologies in Industry 4.0 applications. “Two years ago, more components with PROFIBUS were still being put on the market. That has undergone a fundamental change: today significantly more devices are sold with PROFINET. That means that Ethernet has arrived broadly in industry,” emphasized Karsten Schneider, PI Chairman, in his opening address.

Schneider explained that Industry 4.0 is not a guaranteed success; instead, a great deal of detailed work is necessary, for example coordination with international standards, compatibility concepts, and security requirements. “We don’t start with the technology; we see what users need. From these use cases we develop concepts that are secure, reliable, and made to last.” Incidentally, this also applies to all sectors and all PI technologies, he says.

Standardisation of a physical layer for Ethernet-in-the-field communication in process automation is being promoted in this context together with users, researchers, and authorities. The PA Profile 4.0, which will be completed by the end of 2017, is the preparatory work for this. “Our greatest asset is that many companies cooperate in the PI community and want to actively shape the future,” declared Schneider. Thus the solutions developed are sustained by a global community.

Furthermore, numerous practical examples were presented at the PI Conference, such as asset management functions in PROFINET that simplify commissioning and maintenance in the automotive industry, how to optimize rapeseed oil production with PROFIBUS PA, and how IO Link accelerates the gripping technology in robots many times over.

New insights from Silicon Valley were provided by keynote speaker Thomas Schulz, a Spiegel correspondent and author of the bestseller Was Google wirklich will (What Google Really Wants). He provided very convincing information about the technological development approach there and the secret of their success. “First of all, the employees go to the office every day with the mission of promoting global progress with their technology. Secondly, their stated goal is not just to improve a product by 10 percent, but rather to make it 10 times better.” This often entails the necessity of completely rethinking and re-designing established processes.

Not only this presentation, but all the accompanying exhibition by the attending partners, provided enough material for intensive networking and an exchange of ideas about the technological development, application, and future of the PI technologies.

Advanced regularity control.


The International Society of Automation (ISA) has just published the third edition release of Basic and Advanced Regulatory Control: System Design and Application by Harold L. Wade, Ph.D., PE.

Dr. Wade—who has more than 50 years of experience designing, applying and installing process control systems—says the updated edition builds upon the real-world experiences and process knowledge of engineers and technicians to demonstrate the application of successful regulatory control strategies and techniques.

“In contrast with many academic textbooks on process control, this book presents the concepts of process automation and control with a minimal amount of mathematical systems theory and a large amount of practical application knowledge,” he emphasizes.  “The book can be used by both instrumentation technicians and process control engineers, but is primarily aimed at those whose responsibility is to design the control system for a new process or to suggest modifications to an existing control system.”

Compact wireless terminal for intralogistics and production.

Requisitioning replenishment parts, warehousing, triggering order processes and requesting consignments or shipping orders: these are all procedures which are familiar to staff working at assembly, dispatch and picking points. The wireless terminal from .steute business unit "Wireless" enables these tasks to be performed more easily, more comfortably and more flexibly. At the same time, they are simple to integrate in a company's IT infrastructure.

Users receive information via a two-line display and, vice versa, can also send information to superordinate control systems (WMS, ERP, PDA, etc.) via three freely configurable buttons. Flexibility is guaranteed, for example by the fact that signals are passed on within the wireless network sWave.NET®. This occurs via access points, which work similarly to a router and send the wireless signals directly to an IP address, where they are then processed by the company's IT system.

New terminals can be integrated in this network in just a few steps. This also makes for simple retrofitting, e.g. to FIFO shelves, E-Kanban shelves, picking points or other workstations. At the same time, transparency is increased, both at the individual workstation and throughout the company, because a constant, bidirectional flow of information is generated – for example from the picking belt to logistics management or from the Kanban shelf to materials handling. In each case, additional wireless switching devices and command systems can be integrated in the sWave.NET® wireless network at any time.

steute believes that "wireless Kanban" shelves, Andon systems for displaying malfunctions and irregularities in production, as well as mobile workstations in consignment zones could all be examples of typical applications for its new wireless terminal. This wireless technology includes features such as minimal installation costs, high overall transmission times and maintenance-free operation for many years.

Since the sWave.NET® wireless network is more or less self-configuring, very little effort is required to set it up. For optimised energy efficiency with short activity cycles, transmitter and receiver processes must be coordinated. When a user sends information via a wireless terminal, the transmitter addresses several different access points in the vicinity, tests the transmission signal strength of each response and then sends the signal to the access point with the highest signal strength. The transmission path is prioritised regularly. In this way, short latency periods and high transmission reliability are guaranteed.

Steriliasable pH electrode.

The Memosens CPS171D pH electrodes from Endress + Hauser, that can be sterilised and are autoclavable for use in bioreactors, fermenters, and other hygienic and sterile applications in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food/bev and similar industries. The CPS171D measures 0-14 pH and works in temperatures from 32-284°F (0-140°C).

The CPS171D is IECEx and ATEX approved for use in hazardous locations; has IP68 protection and a TÜV certificate; and has FDA, USP and ISO approvals for biocompatibility regarding cytotoxicity and bioreactivity. It is suitable for CIP and SIP operations up to 284°F.

High yields and high quality product is achieved in fermentation applications with accurate and reliable pH measurement over a narrow range. The CPS171D pH probe has been developed with a unique reference gel and glass membrane. When combined these new features improve the long-term stability for reliable and accurate measurement, even after multiple clean-in place (CIP) and sterilize-in-place (SIP) cycles. The sensor performs well after autoclaving at 284 °F (140 °C). These sensor characteristics, pressurized reference and ion trap make the CPS171D uniquely designed for biotechnology applications.

The Memosens CPS171D provides maximum process safety and data security because of noncontact, inductive digital signal transmission to its cable for communication to the Liquiline transmitter. The inductive connection eliminates problems with measured values being distorted from moisture, and terminals becoming coated or corroded in service.

Memosens technology allows the sensor to store measuring and operating data in the sensor including serial number, calibration date, number of calibrations, offsets, pH application range, number of calibrations, hours of operation under extreme conditions and other information. Recording sensor data in the sensor itself enables predictive maintenance and makes it easy for asset management software, such as Memobase Plus, to facilitate life-cycle management.

Memosens technology also simplifies replacement in the field, because the sensor can simply be replaced with another calibrated sensor, which will automatically transfer its data to the transmitter. Once the sensor has been connected, its calibration is used for the measured value. Calibration data is stored in the sensor, so the sensor can be calibrated and adjusted independently of the measuring point.

Installation and Maintenance of Networks.

New facility in Germany to help customers achieve operational excellence.

Emerson Automation Solutions has opened its new office in Langenfeld, Germany, which showcases the latest automation technology that can help manufacturers and process companies achieve operational excellence through a programme Emerson calls Operational Certainty™.

It also allows customers to observe aspects of Emerson’s Plantweb™ digital ecosystem - a scalable portfolio of hardware, software, intelligent devices and services, which provides the technology foundation for companies to securely implement IIoT applications. The facility also includes a dedicated area for performing factory acceptance testing of control and safety systems.

The new 5,500m2 office will be home to around 270 employees. Its opening marks 50 years since Emerson first established a presence in Germany, and complements the existing facilities at Hasselroth, Wessling, Gronau, Selmsdorf, Willich, Dietzenbach and Ölbronn-Dürr.

Solving common drive errors.

Control Techniques has launched a brand new mobile application to help drive users analyse and find solutions for common drive errors.

Its new Diagnostic Tool application, available on Apple, Android and Windows mobile devices, is a quick and simple way for users of Control Techniques’ drives to solve any error codes which the drive may show.

Built within the app are easy-to-use wiring diagrams for first time setup, plus links to the relevant manuals which provide the most comprehensive drive data and information.

The app also has full contact details of the technical support teams around the world to aid you with any technical problems.

Currently, the app has full information for all drives within the Unidrive M, Powerdrive F300, Elevator drives, Unidrive SP, Commander SK, Digitax ST and Mentor MP ranges.

Users simply download the app, select their drive variant and enter the error code. The app will then display a full description of how to resolve the issue.

Jon Atkinson, engineering manager at Control Techniques, said; “It is often concluded that the cause of a drive trip is directly related to the drive hardware since it is the drive which indicates there is a problem. The reality is that 90% of the trips are caused by issues outside of the product which have triggered the drive protection.

Smart connectors.

Harting is expanding its range of so-called “smart” connectors which can provide identification of key machine components or functional control elements and are also increasingly being deployed for machinery predictive maintenance. Communication can be performed using inexpensive bidirectional systems like the I2C bus, as well as standardised bus systems such as CAN Bus.

Following on from the already established I2C ID module, the new CAN ID module is the latest product in the smart Han® series. Implementation as a Han-Modular® module ensures that identification is flexibly integrated into interfaces which comprehensively supply machines with power, data and signals, in the most optimum space-saving manner possible.
The progress made by transferring identification functionality to the connector can best be illustrated by showing how such embedded intelligence features can be beneficial to the increasing trends for both modular designed processing machinery and machinery with multiple isochronous drives.


Case 1: ID module in modular designed processing machinery with exchangeable elements.
For modular designed machinery with pluggable drives, auxiliary equipment and other controller units, ID modules help to ensure that each machine module is instantly recognised by the automation control system as it is fitted or replaced, saving machine set-up time and limiting operator error by ensuring that the correct one is applied according to the operational requirements. Information such as the year of manufacturing, the last revision status and other parameters of the machine unit can also be stored and used for predictive maintenance on the application.

The Han-Modular ID module offers the double functionality of an identification tool and data storage device and paves the way for the customisation of the machine unit.
In addition to local machine control, industrial Wi-Fi modules provide easy connection with the Industry 4.0 manufacturing environment.

Case 2: ID module in pluggable isochronous drives

Both conventional machinery and special-purpose machinery contain machine components characterised by movement processes made up of individual synchronously executing movements.

In conventional machinery, this synchronicity is often achieved by using line shafts, which employ cams and other power couplings to initiate all movements according to a defined process scheme. However, machines with high speeds and accelerated axes are controlled using special sensors, drives and motion controllers. The CAN bus, which operates in real time and is organised according to the “publisher-subscriber” principle, is ideally suited for the synchronisation of subscribers. The CAN ID module also enables the current configuration of the drives to be tested and the parameters that are determined to be transmitted to all other drives and the controller.

The machine may only start up if the drive is correctly configured. Start-up is blocked if any state exists other than the one desired. The benefit for the customer is the potential for time savings, for example during servicing: drive data is available in the module at the periphery, meaning that the revision status can be quickly queried. Individual machine elements can be exchanged and repaired faster, since work on a subsystem does not entail starting the entire machine. This saves time and energy.

As a result, the CAN ID module offers advantages for both types of machinery. On the one hand, it helps implement identification functionality in combination with memory storage capabilities in the device periphery, while on the other it logically complements existing complex systems and helps save time and money on servicing.

For Industry 4.0 applications, integration takes place via network-enabled devices or, in future, directly via an Ethernet interface. This in turn implements end-to-end networking of the data.

Sealing bags!

Novuqare the med-tech instrument innovator, has developed a range of bag sealing machines for medical instruments that use specially modified ZEMIC miniature load cells to precisely measure sealing force. Keeping track of lab calibration & maintenance.

The Instrument Calibration & Maintenance System (ICMS) from Autoscribe Informatics keeps a computerised record of all instruments within a laboratory and a history of calibration and maintenance events for audit purposes. This helps to ensure only properly calibrated and maintained instruments are available for use. ICMS is available as an option within the Matrix Gemini Laboratory Information Management System or as a standalone product.

The instrument details, calibration and maintenance information are recorded in ICMS in order to allow the instrument status to be tracked automatically. It can therefore provide immediate feedback on instrument availability at the time a particular analysis is scheduled, rather than checking the status when the results need to be entered. This prevents the allocation of work to an un-calibrated instrument or one that has not been maintained correctly. It also allows the identification of events such as the maintenance period being exceeded.

The system can provide reminders of pending calibration and maintenance tasks and allows assessment of instrument support agreement value. These in turn ensure the laboratory can demonstrate that it follows standard calibration and maintenance procedures and can indicate which instruments are most costly in terms of maintenance and reliability.

An automatic change of status occurs when calibration or maintenance is overdue and when it is performed. As well as flagging events that affect the availability of instruments, the system can produce a series of useful reports. These include: calibration and maintenance schedules; instruments due for calibration or maintenance over a user specified period ; overdue calibrations and maintenance events as well as all unavailable instruments. It is also possible to develop additional reports using Crystal Reports or other reporting tools.

The International Society of Automation (ISA) will be holding an invitation-only meeting of top pharmaceutical industry executives on 16 May 2017 to assess industrial cybersecurity challenges facing this automation industry sector and to examine strategies for solving them.

Accurate & economical measurement of IoT devices.

The new Wireless Connectivity Test Set MT8862A, from Anritsu Corporation, is an integrated one-box test set specifically for testing 802.11 WLAN devices. It has advanced features, including built-in communications protocols, to create a more efficient, accurate and economical solution to verify the performance of WLAN devices in their actual operating state.

With built-in communications protocols, the MT8862A measures the performance of the WLAN devices in the actual operating state, and is the first test equipment of its kind to support all IEEE802.11ac/n/a/g/b standards. The instrument uses the Network Mode to measure the performance of the target WLAN device under test (DUT) in the actual operating state. RF performance characteristics, such as Tx power and Rx sensitivity (PER), can be measured using this Network Mode, which helps with configuration of a simpler test environment and eliminates the need for dedicated vendor-provided test modes required for WLAN device inspections.

Generally, WLAN measuring instruments for manufacturing inspections use a special inspection test mode for measurement that requires a physical control line connection between the WLAN devices and measuring instrument. Consequently, the evaluation results are not a true reflection of the actual performance experienced by users because the performance of the measured WLAN devices is analyzed using physical connection with a control line without considering the effect of the internal wireless antennas. Although Anritsu’s current MT8860C model used for these analyses has a network mode, it does not support IEEE802.11ac standard. To solve this problem, Anritsu developed the new model implementing support for the IEEE802.11ac Network Mode.

The Wireless Connectivity Test Set MT8862A is ideal for measuring the RF TRx characteristics at design and quality assurance of WLAN devices. It has built-in WLAN protocol messaging as standard for Network Mode for measurement by connection with the DUT. It is easy to operate using a web browser from a control PC connected by Ethernet which simplifies measurement setup and eliminates configuration work. In addition, remote control is also supported when the MT8862A and PC controller are inside the same network.

Vibrating fork switches certified for hygenic applications.

Emerson’s Rosemount™ 2120 series of vibrating fork switches, which provide reliable level monitoring in demanding and safety-critical applications, are now suitable for use in hygienic process environments.
Hygienic certificates enable them to be used in sanitary and aseptic applications in industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and life sciences.

The Rosemount 2120 series of switches, based on vibrating short fork technology, are robust, reliable, require almost no maintenance and are easy to install and use. SIL 2 certification enables the fork switches to be used for critical overfill protection, high and low level alarm and pump control duties in a wide range of process applications.

Hygienic approvals are now available on tri-clamp process connections. The wetside is machined from solid 316 type stainless steel, guaranteeing zero porosity and increasing robustness, with several surface finishes available, including a new electropolished option.

Event coincides with major British air quality consultation.

Toxic gas in freight containers.

Dangerous levels of toxic gases in freight containers represent a major threat to port and transport workers, customs officials, warehousemen, store employees and consumers. However, the risks posed by these gases can be effectively assessed with Gasmet FTIR multigas analysers.

The air quality inside freight containers varies enormously, depending on the goods, the packing materials, transit time, temperature, humidity and the possible presence of fumigants. Consequently, many containers contain hazardous levels of toxic gases.

Traditional monitoring techniques employ a ‘hit and miss’ approach, but in the new video published by Gasmet Technologies, the advantages of simultaneous multigas analysis are explained. Toolkit for OPC UA development in embedded systems

Measuring corrosion under insulation.

Ashtead Technology has expanded its equipment rental pool following a significant investment in the latest Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) technology to deliver faster, more accurate asset integrity inspections.

The company will now supply the Eddyfi Lyft™, an inspection tool for identifying corrosion under insulation (CUI), a major asset integrity issue for the oil and gas, and petrochemical sectors.

CUI is a type of corrosion that occurs as a result of a moisture build-up on the external surface of insulated equipment. The corrosion is most commonly galvanic, chloride, acidic, or alkaline, and if undetected, the consequences can lead to the shutdown of a process unit or an entire facility.

Lyft™ can be used to accurately measure corrosion and wall thickness on insulated pipes without the need to remove insulation, significantly reducing time and costs. It’s suitable for use on a number of materials including metal, aluminium, stainless steel and galvanised steel weather jackets, to provide real-time C-scan imaging, wall thickness measurements and fast data acquisition (up to 15 readings per second).

Panel LED.

Wilbrecht LEDCO has introduced its new 14mm mount CL series panel LED for industrial and outdoor applications.

The CL series incorporates a 10mm LED available in red, green, yellow, blue and bicolor options. Pre-wired with internal resistors, the indicators can be configured for voltages up to 60 VDC or 120/240 VAC.

The robust M14 size metal housing is designed for panel thicknesses up to .394" (10mm) and is resistant to shock and vibration. Fully filled with epoxy and equipped with a front sealing gasket, the indicator offers IP67 front and back sealing for outdoor use.
