Acquires to expand condition-based monitoring range.

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) has acquired Test Motors, a company specialising in predictive maintenance of electric motors and generators. Based in Barcelona, Test Motors offers products and services that detect faults in electric motors before they cause damage to production cycles and advises on how and when to repair them. The acquisition expands ADI’s portfolio of condition-based monitoring solutions capable of identifying equipment faults before downtime and catastrophic failure occur.

“Machine maintenance relies heavily on experienced technicians and engineers able to detect and diagnose issues that can lead to unplanned downtime,” said Kevin Carlin, Vice President Automation and Energy Group, Analog Devices. “There are not enough trained professionals, however, to keep up with the demand as the number of machines to maintain rapidly grows. ADI’s condition-based monitoring applications, driven by the acquisitions of Test Motors and OtoSense, will tackle this expert resource challenge by providing customers with a system able to perform complete and early detection of anomalies to avoid unexpected and costly machine downtime.”

This acquisition builds on Analog Devices’ 2018 addition of OtoSense, a startup that developed “sensing interpretation” software able to learn and recognize sounds or vibration and identify potential problems in a factory machine or a car’s engine before they become severe. OtoSense’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform is dedicated to sensing interpretation and enabling the monitoring of any asset, wherever located. Analog Devices plans to combine software from OtoSense with Test Motors’ monitoring capabilities to create solutions that offer an advanced, holistic snapshot of machine health by capturing a wider breadth of potential faults.

The Test Motors team will join ADI’s Automation and Energy Group and operate as a key technology group. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

“We are excited to become part of Analog Devices and work with its team of industrial technology experts,” said Emili Valero, Test Motors’ former CEO. “The combining of our technology and expertise will enable us to develop the next generation of condition-based monitoring solutions designed to greatly extend manufacturing equipment life for electrical and non-electrical rotating machines and deliver significant cost savings that benefit both businesses and consumers.”

Water testing laboratory efficiency.

A new case study has been published by Autoscribe Informatics which shows how the Culligan Analytical Lab (IL USA) has made significant improvements in laboratory efficiency by using the Matrix Gemini LIMS.

Tim Daniels, Marketing Manager at Autoscribe Informatics, said: “This new case study is another excellent example of how Matrix Gemini provides the flexibility not only to solve real, practical problems faced by a laboratory, but also to allow it to adapt to changes over time. For example Matrix is now integrated with a new SAP implementation to ensure that all work is correctly billed for. The case study also highlights another highly successful installation for Matrix Gemini in the water and wastewater treatment industries.”

Culligan Water provides innovative water treatment solutions to domestic, commercial and industrial markets. Laboratory testing to provide an accurate analysis of a customer’s water quality is a key component of the company’s success, especially as many customers are using well
water.

Handling around 17,000 samples per year, with each sample undergoing multiple tests and turnaround times as short as 24 hours often required, the need to drive and maintain laboratory efficiency is very important. Replacing the previous LIMS used by the laboratory, Matrix Gemini removed a major bottleneck by using barcoding to replace the manual scanning and saving as PDFs of sample request forms. In addition, the system was configured to automate the collection of test results and eliminate transcription errors by transferring data directly into Matrix Gemini from ICP, IC, UV/Vis, and titration equipment.

The laboratory is certified to be compliant with the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP), which is modelled after similar ISO standards. The audit trail provided within Matrix Gemini is completely in line with the requirements of NELAP.

Using the built-in configuration tools, screens were configured to automatically populate information from the log-in screen to make the flow more intuitive and efficient. With sample requests coming from many different Culligan dealers, Matrix Gemini was able to access all the required dealer information automatically.. The system also maintains continuity between results generated by 3rd parties and results generated internally; Matrix Gemini ensures that the full set of results are always reported.

Europe demand for cybersecurity info surges!

The rising number of industrial cyberattacks throughout the world is prompting a surge in demand for ISA cybersecurity courses offered by ISA Europe.

Cyber-criminals and nation-state actors are increasingly targeting operational technology (OT), which is essential for the production and safety of critical infrastructure. Attacks against OT have ballooned from 5 percent to 30 percent in the last few years. According to a recent security survey, at least 80 percent of companies in Europe have experienced at least one cybersecurity incident over the last year.

As a result, ISA Europe reports increasing demand among global manufacturers—most notably those located in The Netherlands, Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, and Spain—for training courses based on the ISA/IEC-62443 series of industrial automation and control systems (IACS) security standards.

Pieter van der Klooster, ISA’s director of international business development, discusses the growing demand for industrial cybersecurity training and what it means for ISA Europe.

“We at ISA Europe are excited about our long-term potential for growth, particularly in meeting mounting demand for industrial cybersecurity training and education. In fact, approximately 70 percent of the ISA courses we teach in Europe are ISA cybersecurity courses,” reports van der Klooster.

“Certainly, incidents of cyber-crime are increasing all over the world. Every company is facing challenges in this area and ISA has the subject-matter expertise and unique training program in cybersecurity to help solve these challenges,” he added.

The most popular courses, based on class enrollment, offered by ISA Europe are: IC32 (Using the ISA/IEC 62443 Standards to Secure Your Control Systems), followed by:

ISA/IEC 62443, the world's only consensus-based series of industrial cybersecurity standards and those endorsed by the United Nations, protect the IACS and networks that control operational technology machinery and associated devices within critical infrastructure and manufacturing plants. Without these defenses in place, an industrial cyberattack can result in plant shutdown, operational and equipment impairment, severe economic and environmental damage, and put lives at risk.
This January, ISA Europe opened a larger training office and facility located in Eindhoven, Netherlands, which is well-positioned to meet the growing demands for ISA courses in Europe. In addition to providing a more suitable space for training classes and hands-on laboratory exercises, the facility offers flexible workspaces for on-site trainers, additional parking, a storage area, a shared kitchen, and a lunchroom.

Intelligent displacement sensor added.

With their BMP series Balluff has added a new intelligent displacement sensor which provides not only the absolute position signal for the stroke travel of a piston via IO-Link but also information about the sensor status and the current ambient conditions.

It monitors for example the sensor temperature, the number of starts and issues warnings when a configurable limit value is violated. An internal counter continuously monitors the operating hours over the entire life of the sensor, both since the last service and the last start-up. This makes it possible to plan for a possible needed replacement at the next service interval.

The integrated IO-Link interface also offers flexibility; it enables for example fast format changes thanks to time-saving parameterization functions. This magnetic, non-contact and wear-free sensor continuously detects the absolute position of a piston, is compatible with virtually all cylinder types and is quickly installed. Preferred applications include those where the exact execution of a defined piston stroke is essential for the process and product quality, for example in assembly, handling and factory automation.

Single automation platform for North America.

Harpak-ULMA has introduced its latest smart, connected packaging solution: the Trave® line, built by G. Mondini, which utilizes Rockwell Automation’s Integrated Architecture® (Allen-Bradley®) production control and information system.

They also announced G. Mondini’s commitment to standardizing on a single automation platform in North America. The move reflects a growing awareness that a smart, connected automation platform delivers significant competitive advantages over traditional automation approaches - which often embody a mix of components from different automation suppliers.

Kevin Roach, Harpak-ULMA’s CEO, stated that the updated Trave line also represents a great opportunity to highlight Harpak-ULMA’s Augmented Reality strategy. He complimented Giovanni Mondini’s leadership foresight. “I have tremendous respect for Giovanni’s brilliant intuition – he has a knack for identifying the “next big thing” that will shake up the packaging industry. Adopting a smart, connected strategy in North American operations helps solidify Harpak-ULMA’s thought leadership by delivering real value for customers. It also is another important milestone in Harpak-ULMA’s technology vision and roadmap to introduce disruptive innovation across our served markets.”

“Smart, connected machines play an essential role in a manufacturer’s digital transformation process,” said Mike Wagner, global OEM business manager for Rockwell Automation. The Integrated Architecture platform dramatically accelerates and eases integration with advanced software applications, such as augmented reality (AR). Harpak-ULMA’s deployment of PTC’s Vuforia AR software, part of the FactoryTalk InnovationSuite, powered by PTC, guides staff maintenance or production activities through 3D step-by-step work instructions using available tablets, smartphones, or glasses. Harpak-ULMA joined the Rockwell Automation PartnerNetwork as an OEM Machine Builder to facilitate Roach’s vision for delivering smart, connected packaging solutions that leverage digital technologies to improve producer agility or emerging capabilities such as cloud-based data models that enable predictive maintenance.

Standardizing on the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture platform for controls offers several immediate, tangible producer benefits. Allen-Bradley replacement parts and controls technicians are widely available through the company’s extensive distribution network. Such widespread availability, combined with easy access and modification of the control’s software, means producers have more options when it comes to resolving maintenance issues that might otherwise result in extended line downtimes, or limit them to more costly repair options. In addition, the combination of rich information access and easier integration with other systems is proving attractive to producers that place a premium on the competitive advantages of a more connected enterprise.

“We are excited to have Harpak-ULMA in the Rockwell Automation PartnerNetwork. They continue to pursue innovative solutions that respond to the demand for smart, connected equipment,” Wagner said.

The approach further enhances G. Mondini’s rugged, heavy duty Trave line of tray sealing machines, already renowned for high reliability, low maintenance requirements, and the industry’s longest warranties. The Trave line uses an elegantly simple electro-mechanical lifting and sealing design that replaces failure prone pneumatics and employs a unique, patented multi-film handling system. The extremely accurate servo-screw, torque-based lifting and sealing technology ensures repeatable, high-quality sealing process control. Harpak-ULMA’s Trave line is the only domestic tray sealer available today that accommodates multiple film handling technologies on the same machine, including Sealed Air’s Cryovac® Darfresh On Tray® vacuum skin packaging that achieves zero scrap loss.

The Trave’s design enables the highest output speeds available today, and its ‘open design’, full wash down/sanitary capability is unique to the market. Mondini’s reputation for innovation-driven packaging solutions dates to 1972, when it pioneered the use of rigid packaging food containers. The company continually invests in people and technology, while constantly monitoring market trends in served geographies. Mondini executive leadership noted a surge of demand by U.S. and Canadian producers for smart manufacturing-enabled packaging solutions as the impetus for adopting Rockwell Automation’s Integrated Architecture® control and information platform in this region.

The Picomag update enables measurement of flow of electrically conductive fluids and the process temperature and conductivity. It enables easy commissioning with Bluetooth using the SmartBlue App and seamless integration with IO-Link technology.

Picomag can be installed into any pipe up to 2” in diameter, even in confined spaces. For this purpose, there are various process connection adapters available, such as NPT-thread, R-thread, internal thread, Tri-Clamp or Victaulic. Picomag is a cost-optimized solution for applications where the focus is on high repeatability (±0.2% o.f.s.) and reliable measured values – e.g. for correctly measuring water flows 198 gal/min or for minimizing energy costs in utility applications.

Picomag is suitable for process temperatures between 14 to 158 °F (temporarily up to 185 ºF) as well as for process pressures up to 232 psi. Picomag requires no inlet and outlet runs and thus can be mounted directly before or after a pipe bend.

The user-friendly display allows a quick and easy reading of flow, temperature, conductivity and totalizer values. Errors occurring during operations, such as a partial pipe filling or an exceeded temperature limit, are displayed via diagnostic symbols in accordance with NAMUR recommendation NE107. The screen rotates automatically depending on the installation position (horizontal or vertical). Configuration parameters can be called up and monitored by simply knocking on the device.

It is possible to carry out wireless configuration or data retrieval over a distance of 32 ft Bluetooth connection– even at installation sites which are difficult to access. Endress+Hauser’s SmartBlue App allows quick and easy navigation through all device and diagnostic functions.

Picomag provides digital data transmission to process control systems via IO-Link technology. The IO-Link master as an interface allows users to have comprehensive data access from the control room. Other advantages of the IO-Link technology include the automatic transfer of parameters after a device replacement as well as low wiring effort as compared to conventional wiring.

Three I/O modules join family!

Opto 22 will release three new groov EPIC® input/output modules later this month. They will extend an already comprehensive industrial I/O portfolio. For system integrators and engineers, the new I/O modules provide more options for bringing existing devices into groov EPIC, as well as meeting precise requirements for temperature control applications. They also include budget-beating designs for mixed signal types, signal isolation, and channel density:

GRV-IDCSW-12 (discrete input, 12 channels, DC contact switch status) monitors the open/closed status of dry contact switches, and provides the necessary excitation voltage to power the circuit. This module is ideal for monitoring distributed IT equipment, benchtop analyzers, motor run/stop relays, or any device that offers only a dry contact for status. Because there’s no need to install separate power supplies to drive these dry contacts—since wetting and monitoring are both provided—this module can save considerable time, money, space, and installation effort.

GRV-IVI-12 (analog voltage input, 12 channels, ±1.25 to ±160 V, channel-to-channel isolation): With 12 isolated channels, each configurable to one of eight ranges from ±1.25 to ±160 V, this module eliminates the need to segregate I/O signals over multiple modules, providing significant cost and space reduction for mixed voltage applications. The GRV-IVI-12 has 20-bit resolution and is accurate to 0.1% of the configured range. It includes options for scaling, filtering, averaging, and more, speeding development time and distributing computation functions down to the I/O module.

GRV-IRTD-8 (analog input, 8 channels, temperature/RTD or resistor) increases options for accuracy and I/O density in temperature applications. It provides 8 channels for 2- and 3-wire RTD inputs, with a maximum range of –200 °C to 850 °C. Users can take advantage of multiple fixed ranges or one of two auto-ranging methods to simplify configuration. GRV-IRTD-8 can also be used for high-resolution resistance measurements, with accuracy ranging from 4.2 Ohms at the 8K Ohm input range to 0.058 Ohms at the 10 Ohm range for 3-wire RTDs.

PAC Project 10.2003 or the Opto 22 Library Package for CODESYS v1.0.2.0 are required for full support of these modules.

Opto 22 designs groov I/O modules with the end user in mind, including many features to make them easy to specify, install, configure and support for even the most challenging applications. These new modules continue that tradition with the following features:
+ Two-position, hinged LED module cover that indicates module status and covers field terminations

+ Touch-sensitive pad to trigger module information display on the groov EPIC processor

+ Removable top-mounted connector with single, captive retention screw

+ Spring-clamp field wiring terminals

+ Hot swappable for installation and removal without turning off or stopping the system

+ UL Hazardous Locations approved and ATEX compliant

+ Wide operating temperature range of –20 to +70 °C

+ Individually calibrated and factory tested twice—no statistical testing

+ Guaranteed for life

With this latest module release, users can choose from almost 40 types of groov I/O modules to support their application requirements. Combined with its variety of embedded software tools for control, visualization and connectivity, this extensive I/O family makes groov EPIC one of the most versatile tools for industrial automation and IIoT (industrial internet of things) systems.

When cameras exceed their limits.

Custom-made products are required whenever standard industrial cameras reach their limits. Especially for small projects, however, development and cost expenditure are often disproportionately high.

Thanks to its flexible modular design principle, the new uEye ACP concept from IDS Imaging Development Systems enables individual, economical solutions to be created – even from single units. With just a few clicks, users can put together their own individual board level camera model using an online configurator and request a quote directly from the manufacturer.

"With the new uEye ACP models, we offer our customers an economical solution for obtaining individual cameras even for small quantities. They combine high quality, needs-based functionality and simple handling," explains Alexander Klingner, Project Manager Customized Solutions at IDS.

Customers can choose between USB3 and GigE Vision interfaces, extensions such as connector boards (RJ45, M12, MicroB), ribbon cables and lens mounts as well as a large number of different image sensors. This allows the board level cameras to be easily adapted to individual requirements.

The modular system ensures that long development cycles are avoided. Since almost all components are manufactured by IDS itself, the cameras are usually available at short notice. The components can be further modified by the IDS technology experts on request. Alternatively, the company also offers classic special developments – from customer-specific branding to individual designs and special software adaptations.

This unique sensor technology represents a milestone in temperature measurement technology and offers added value, especially for users who need continuous monitoring of heating or sterilization processes. Apart from a high degree of process safety and improved system availability, iTHERM TrustSens furthermore eliminates the risk of nonconformities occurring during production.

97 percent of all instrument data at the field level is unused. With a live demonstration at its exhibit booth at BrauBeviale 2019 (Nuremberg {D}12-14/11/2019)*, the company will illustrate how customers can release this hidden potential. To support plant operators with the digitalization of their system components, they have developed their own IIoT ecosystem that focuses on the utilization and management of assets. In combination with the innovative diagnostics information from their Heartbeat technology, for instance, this makes it possible to determine the actual maintenance requirement or prevent unplanned system downtime.

When it comes to ensuring a consistently high level of quality during product manufacturing, inline measurement technology plays a decisive role. Whether it involves determining the pasteurization units in the heater, measuring the color in liquids or determining concentration-specific parameters via density, measurement values must be precise, reproducible and permanently stable. This is the only way to guarantee the required quality.

Keeping an eye on the rudder!

TruSail is a performance sailing specialist and the name of a modular wireless sensing telemetry system that provides a unique scientific and measurable tool for racing sailboats. Used for expert training by elite sailors and coaches, typically competing at national, international and Olympic level, the system includes real-time measurement and advanced analysis of the most significant dynamic forces that influence sailboat performance. Armed with this data, which may be analysed instantly whilst on the water, sailors can react and improve their performance technique affording a solid team advantage compared to traditional and delayed classroom debriefing methods.

As part of the measurement components used on the TruSail system, Ixthus Instrumentation is supplying Euro-CMRK series angle sensors for the TruSail’s rudder and boom position feedback as well as application expertise that helped the sailing specialists meet its stringent marine environment and performance specifications.

TruSail’s technical director Glynn Lloyd explains the requirements in detail. “Our products need to be light because any additional weight on the boat will potentially slow it down or change the "feeling" of the boat to the sailor. TruSail systems have to work in all weather conditions and because the sailors perform to the limits - with meticulously fine margins between winning and losing - every fraction of a percent in performance really matters. At such extreme limits, high speed capsizing can be frequent so our systems need extreme durability and waterproofing. The Euro-CMRT angle sensors specified by the engineers at Ixthus Instrumentation have proven ideal for these conditions and their miniature design helps keep the TruSail’s size and weight to a minimum.”

At only 10 mm in diameter and 15 mm housing length, and with an M8 threaded mounting and a 3.175 mm flatted shaft, the Euro-CMRT programmable angle sensor now used by TruSail features Hall Effect non-contacting technology in an extremely lightweight IP68 sealed design. Manufactured by Variohm EuroSensor – Ixthus’ sister company in the Variohm Group – this new product is the latest version of a comprehensive range of Hall Effect angle sensors that excel for proven durability, long life, high duty-cycle and exceptional reliability. As the smallest angle sensor in Variohm’s range, it is perfectly suited to precision angle measurement tasks where light-weight and restricted installation space are important design considerations.

For the rudder sensor, the Euro-CMRT is mounted inside the TruSail housing which also includes telemetry electronics. Measuring the rudder angle through the tiller link mechanism (see image with inset below), the sensor’s angle is transmitted to a large display at the front of the boat that sailors are able to monitor as well as to a tablet on the coaches’ boat which runs the main telemetry and performance analysis application software. A similar TruSail system with a further CMRT sensor provides the team with the sailboat’s boom angle position and up to four boats may be linked at the same time with information shared between sailors and coaches. As the sailors are directly able to adapt their sailing style using the monitors, and coaches can support them on the water during the actual training session, sailing performance, boat set-up and learning are all optimised.

The Euro-CMRT is part of a new family of Hall Effect long-life angle sensors that include the 18 mm PCD flange mounting Euro-CMRS and the puck-and-magnet design of the Euro-CMRK. The new products are based on preceding Hall Effect sensors that enjoy a high reputation in measurement applications that include industrial automation, motorsports, mobile construction machinery and agricultural vehicles. Improved production and assembly techniques have led to smaller footprint products with added flexibility that allows straightforward mechanical and electrical adaptation to exactly match the customer’s requirements.

Across the new Euro-CMRx range a choice of single or dual redundant output, with CW or CCW direction, includes ratiometric or PWM signal levels from an industry standard 5 VDC input. Programmable angles from 30⁰ up to 360⁰ in 1⁰ increments are specifiable with independent linearity to within +/- 0.5% of each signal range. The CMRx family offers a vibration rating that meets IEC 600068-2-6 and a temperature range from -40° C to +125° C, with short term operation to 150° C. Working life is rated in excess of 50 million movements for the housed sensors and the completely contactless puck and magnet version has a virtually unlimited life. Encapsulated sensor electronics combined with high grade anodised aluminium housing and stainless steel shaft materials further ensure reliability and performance for the most demanding environments.
