Detecting error.

Anritsu Corporation launches its PAM4 Error Detector (ED), supporting market-leading 116-Gb/s bit error rate tests. This new module for the Anritsu Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A series is the only instrument to achieve error-free measurement of PAM4 signals at 116 Gbit/s with industry-best operation bit rates and high Rx sensitivity. Combined with the previously released MP1900A series PAM4 Pattern Generator, the new module supports high-accuracy BER measurements of PAM4 signals.

With the spread of next generation 5G mobile communications and Cloud services, data communications traffic is expected to increase exponentially. In addition, data centers supporting rapid transmission of large volumes of traffic are switching to the 400GbE*3 communications standard using the 53.125-Gbaud PAM4 x 4 lane method and are also investigating a future switch to 800GbE*4 using eight lanes.

Since the PAM4 method representing data with four amplitude levels has gaps between signal levels just a third that of the two-level NRZ method, measuring instruments for evaluating signal quality need a much higher input sensitivity than previous models. Moreover, in addition to high speeds, the impact of transmission path losses in printed circuit boards, cables, components, etc., on measurement results cannot be ignored. Evaluating the genuine performance of the measured product not only requires excellent fundamental performance, such as sensitivity and bandwidth, but also requires a highly integrated solution with functions such as clock recovery and an equalizer for correcting loss effects.

To meet these needs, Anritsu has developed this ED with built-in clock recovery and equalizer to implement a PAM4 BER measuring instrument with market-leading high performance.

The market-leading Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A is a bit error rate tester for communications speeds of 400G and faster, supporting high-speed signal generation and signal performance analysis.

With a built-in high-bandwidth and high-input-sensitivity Rx circuit, the newly released PAM4 ED MU196040B module supports error-free measurement of 100-Gbit/s PAM4 input signals even at a low input amplitude of just 36 mV typ. Furthermore, the built-in clock-recovery and equalizer functions support highly reproducible jitter and ISI stress tests of transceiver input circuits using an easily configured equipment setup.

Anritsu's Signal Quality Analyzer-R Series MP1900A has been approved by PCI-SIG®*1 as a compliance test measuring instrument for PCI Express 4.0® (PCIe Gen4). The MP1900A is already approved as an R&D test instrument supporting Gen3 compliance tests and is now approved for the Gen4 test standards.

To speed-up serial-bus interfaces of communications equipment and high-end computers, the PCIe standard is transitioning from Gen3 (8GT/s) to Gen4 (16GT/s). PCIe Gen4 was adopted as a communications standard in August 2017 and has been discussed and examined for compliance testing since then. As part of this process, the MP1900A was approved as a compliance test measuring instrument for PCIe Gen4 based on the results of testing at the May 2019 PCI-SIG Compliance Workshop, and the MP1900A has been in use for certifying PCIe products since August 2019.

The PCI-SIG-approved MP1900A is a high-performance, multi-channel, bit error tester with world-beating output waveform quality, high input sensitivity, and a built-in jitter and noise source. With these high-performance hardware features, the MP1900A PCIe Gen4 test solution is ideal for automating Tx/Rx LEQ tests*2 required for compliance tests. Also, with built-in analysis functions delivering excellent reproducibility support analysis of signal quality issues caused by high-speed transmission path losses.

All Gen1 to Gen4 tests are supported by a single MP1900A, which also supports the new Gen5 standard. Additionally, 32-Gbaud PAM4 signals required by the future Gen6 standard are also supported.

As a result, the MP1900A helps cut PCIe design, inspection, and certification work burdens, while also improving quality.

Signal quality analyser enhanced.

The Variable ISI MU195020A-040/041 option for upgrading the Emphasis function of the Pulse Pattern Generator for the Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A series has been announced by Anritsu. This with the USB Link Training Software MX183000A-PL022 supporting the USB3.0/3.1 Receiver Test.

Increasing mobile data traffic and the spread of cloud services is accelerating the introduction of 100G/200G/400G Ethernet for network interfaces along with PCI Express Gen4 and USB3.1 for bus interfaces. However, the effects of transmission path loss and noise resulting from the faster signals used by these standards and the integration of ICs and modules highlights the importance of stress Rx testing using signal sources with added transmission path loss and noise.

The MP1900A is a high-performance Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) supporting design and testing of high-speed interfaces, such as 100G/200G/400G Ethernet, PCI Express, USB, and Thunderbolt. Using the newly developed Variable ISI option offers easier and more efficient evaluations of high-speed interfaces, backplanes, and cables. In addition, USB Link training supports high-reproducibility measurements of the PHY-layer of USB3.0/3.1 devices by controlling the MP1900A.

With a built-in PPG supporting a 10Tap Emphasis function for testing the effect of transmission path loss plus Jitter and Noise Addition functions, a high-sensitivity BER measurement function, and Link Training function, Anritsu’s MP1900A series is ideal for measuring high-speed interfaces.

The Variable ISI option uses the 10Tap Emphasis function with high and flexible signal controllability to emulate CEI-25G/28G-defined signal path transmission losses which cannot be achieved by utilizing an emphasis function with lower number of taps. In addition, Anritsu’s MP1900A can automatically calculate the Emphasis settings for compensating these losses based on transmission path S-parameter data. With these new capabilities, test signals emulating the transmission path impairments can be generated easily, allowing the impact of transmission path losses on the evaluated device to be evaluated simply without testing various PC boards, helping to cut development costs and time.

USB Link Training is important for measuring USB interfaces; the built-in Link Training function supports transitioning to the device evaluation measurement mode, and when used in combination with the LTSSM Log Analysis, it helps cut times for evaluating USB device receivers and supports cost effective and all in one measurement of high-speed interfaces such as PCI Express, USB, and Thunderbolt.

Signal quality analyser.

Anritsu has released two upgrades for the Signal Quality Analyzer MP1800A series which strengthen the company’s offering for 32 GBaud PAM4 BER test solutions. The newly developed G0375A 32 Gbaud Power PAM4 Converter and G0376A 32 Gbaud PAM4 Decoder with CTLE support the PAM4 input tests and BER measurements defined in the next-generation 200GbE/400GbE and CEI-56G standards.

In order to address the need for faster communications speeds between servers and network devices, next-generation 200GbE/400GbE Ethernet standard are not only relying on faster symbol rates and multiple lanes, but they are also using PAM (Pulse Amplitude Modulation) as a way to increase the transmission rate. As the next-generation of PAM4 communication standards is developed, a signal integrity test solution with high amplitude 32 Gbaud PAM4 BER generation and high quality and accuracy BER measurement will play a major role.

The Signal Quality Analyzer MP1800A is a plug-in modular Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) supporting measurement of multi-channel wideband interfaces up to 64 Gbit/s. The newly developed G0375A and G0376A are remote heads for addition to the MP1800A series 32G PPG/ED to extend measurement support for PAM4 measurements using NRZ measuring instruments.

Combining the G0375A with the 28G/32Gbit/s PPG MU183020A converts two 32 Gbit/s NRZ signals to output a high-amplitude PAM4 signal of 4.4 Vp-p (differential, max.). Additionally, the 3ch PPG synchronization function for independent control of the PAM4 signal 3Eye amplitudes enables high-reproducibility evaluation of optical modulators without using an external driver amplifier.

With built-in PAM4 decode and CTLE functions, the G0376A supports measurement of PAM4 decoded binary signals using the 28G/32Gbit/s High Sensitivity ED MU183040B. In addition, combination with the CTLE function supports high-efficiency, input-sensitivity performance tests.
