Wireless in stone!

World-known manufacturer of natural stone processing plants and machines, Pedrini, and CoreTigo, have announced an advancement in natural stone processing machinery. By integrating CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless devices into its machinery, Pedrini was able to enhance existing machines, gaining the benefits of this industrial-grade wireless communication, without the need to design new machines.

Pedrini sets a high bar of innovation and digitalization for the industry by constantly growing and developing, taking it into the era of Industry 4.0. Pedrini’s SPECTRA B220 planetary calibrating machine is designed for thickness grinding of natural stone slabs including marble, granite and quartzite. The machine’s calibrating unit is composed of numerous spindles equipped with diamond tools. Optimal performance relies on real-time accurate reading and control of the current of each spindle while in high-speed operational mode. The SPECTRA B220 now utilizes CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless communication for monitoring the machine spindles. The wireless solution replaces the need to run communication cables from the spindles through the slip rings of the calibrator and to the PLC.

The deployment’s complexity is reduced significantly with an IO-Link Wireless Bridge (CoreTigo’s TigoBridge) connected to a multiport I/O Hub that communicates current data from 8 spindles simultaneously (and a total of 48 spindles per machine with six TigoBridges). A single IO-Link Wireless Master (CoreTigo’s TigoMaster) collects all the data from the Wireless Bridges on the machine over the air, and communicates it directly to the PLC. The data is visualized on the HMI and enables real-time machine calibration and optimization.

The use of IO-Link Wireless communication allowed Pedrini to switch from complex and high-cost communication slip rings on the calibrators into smaller and more cost-effective slip rings. This new machine design enables a range of benefits and advantages for the SPECTRA B220 machine:

    • Slip ring complexity reduction – cost-effective solution with reduced deployment time and effort
    • Increased flexibility – the wireless solution enables simple retrofit and system expansion by easily adding dozens of connected spindles without slip ring or cabling constraints
    • Improved maintenance – reduced spare parts for expensive slip rings, reduced cable wear and tear, and reduced maintenance operations due to wireless interferences.
    • Reliability – IO-Link Wireless provides performance which is a million times more reliable than conventional wireless systems (such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth). It coexists with other wireless networks, does not require line of sight, and is designed for high-speed motion applications in harsh industrial environments.
"Implementing CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless technology enabled us to further innovate our plants and machines, digitalizing these, and keep marching forward into the Industry 4.0 era," said Michele Romano, Automation Coordinator at Pedrini. "This allows us to offer our customers the increasingly higher level of service and ever-evolving work methods they are used to.”

Robotic automation into the building process.

ABB Robotics has announced it is collaborating with tech start-up AUAR, to advance the use of robotic micro-factories to build affordable, sustainable low energy timber homes.

AUAR’s transformative approach to integrating robotic automation into the building process will tackle skills shortages, boost sustainability, and improve health and safety by deploying robots in a global network of local micro-factories. These micro-factories will construct energy-efficient, affordable buildings from sheet timber. AUAR reports today that it has completed a £2.6M (€3.03M) seed round led by deep-tech and AI fund Miles Ahead, alongside ABB Robotics & Automation Ventures and several other investors.

“The increasing capabilities of robots enabled by vision and AI, coupled with their inherent speed, flexibility and consistency, makes them the ideal solution for meeting the growing need for affordable, high quality, sustainable housing,” said Craig McDonnell, Managing Director Business Line Industries, ABB Robotics. “With 95 percent* of building firms in our recent market survey describing sustainability as ‘important’ or ‘very important’ to their businesses, and 38 percent* seeing robots as a way of reducing waste, our collaboration with AUAR opens new possibilities for homebuilders to deliver affordable sustainable homes at scale.”

ABB is already heavily involved in helping construction companies automate their processes. ABB robots are widely used in a range of modular assembly and 3D printing building projects worldwide, as well as academic projects researching new ways to integrate robotic automation into construction.

The collaboration with AUAR follows the announcement by ABB working with German management consulting firm, Porsche Consulting, to develop innovative new practices in modular housing manufacture.

AUAR is the brainchild of two architects, Mollie Claypool (CEO) and Gilles Retsin (CTO/Chief Architect) who have worked for over 10 years on robotics, automation, construction, and architecture. During that time, they have relied extensively on support from ABB Robotics to realize their vision.

The relationship has already seen ABB Robotics win the prize for ‘Best Use of Robotics or Automation in Construction’ at the 2023 Robotics & Automation Awards. AUAR’s automated micro-factory approach provides a solution to many of the challenges facing building companies, including supply chain issues, project delivery and quality and skills shortages.

Conventional buildings consist of thousands of different components shipped from around the world, making it almost impossible to automate construction. In contrast, AUAR’s goal is to work with one type of material and one type of machine to dramatically simplify the supply chain.

The production process uses standard sheets of timber. A robot cuts the sheets into components and assembles them into units that are transported to site, enabling complete customized homes to be built in a matter of weeks.

While many of the assembly tasks are automated, AUAR’s approach supports local jobs by promoting the use of micro-factories close to construction sites, where local contractors and suppliers can coordinate delivery.

The micro-factory approach is flexible enough to meet whatever each market demands. Each facility can be scaled to reflect local needs, with the ability to ramp up production by adding modular robot cells.

“With the focus on the dual needs of building more affordable homes and minimizing the environmental footprint of buildings throughout their lifetime, automated modular construction presents a great opportunity to rethink the way that the buildings are constructed,” added McDonnell. “Our collaborations with AUAR and Porsche Consulting mark an exciting step in our efforts to accelerate the use of robotic automation in the construction industry to help address its challenges and deliver the sustainable buildings of the future.”

Lower cost hose breaks through.

Backhoe loader manufacturer embraces hoses of a different stripe!

Replacing spiral hose with Danfoss EC881 braided hose has helped a major machinery OEM reduce costs while still meeting the high-pressure requirements of the application. The lighter, more flexible hose also proved beneficial for installation, maintenance, and future machine design. For the OEM and its supplier, thinking outside the spec delivered a value engineering win.

For many years now, hydraulic system pressures have been increasing in mobile machinery – all in the name of improving productivity. The hydraulic pump and downstream components have to deliver the power the machine needs to move faster, lift heavier loads, and meet other end-user requirements. This is no different on electric machines. Buyers expect the performance of an electric machine to at least match the equivalent diesel machine.

In designing a new generation of its electric backhoe loader, a major U.S. OEM specified the same high-pressure fluid conveyance components as the previous generation machine. The outcome, however, was far from the same – the result of a surprise development in the routine RFQ process.

Spiral performance from braided hose.
High-pressure applications require spiral hose. This is common knowledge based on the fact that hose pressure ratings increase with each added layer of wire. Spiral hoses commonly have 4 or 6 layers of wire reinforcement while braided hoses have only one or two layers.

Needing a hose capable of meeting working pressures of 3,800 psi, the backhoe OEM specified SAE 100R12 four-wire spiral hoses for the high-pressure line between the machine’s hydraulic pump and the main control valve. Per its usual process, the OEM issued an RFQ for these hoses to multiple suppliers.

It was during the RFQ process that Danfoss engineers identified a value engineering opportunity. The company recently launched its Aeroquip by Danfoss EC881 Dynamax hose, a two-wire braided hose with a 35% higher pressure rating than other hoses of the same type. EC881 hose is qualified to 1 million impulse cycles, a rating that traditionally requires spiral construction. With its higher pressure capabilities, EC881 hose can replace four-wire spiral hose in certain applications, providing direct cost savings as well as several design benefits. Braided hose is much more flexible than spiral hose, which makes it possible to reroute and even reduce hose lengths, contributing to further cost savings. Braided hose is also lighter in weight than spiral hose, which reduces the overall weight of the machine, contributing to fuel efficiency improvements.

The OEM’s RFQ called for size 12 (0.75-inch inner diameter) 100R12 hoses. Danfoss EC881-12 hose met the working pressure, burst pressure, and other specifications for the application, but at a much lower cost. Recognizing the potential, the project team suggested a deviation to the OEM’s engineering team. Deviations at the RFQ stage are relatively common. What made this situation unique was the switch to a different hose construction.

“The mentality has been, if I want spiral performance, I need a spiral hose. And now we’re saying there’s this braided hose that can do the same. They’re skeptical,” said Scott Larson, senior engineer, Danfoss Power Solutions.

Hose testing
To convince the OEM, Danfoss engineers needed to prove the hose’s capabilities. This involved supplying vast amounts of test data to demonstrate the hose’s performance – for instance, how many impulse cycles the EC881 hose could withstand at specific pressures.

“Once they saw the test reports and given the history and relationship we have with [the customer], it was accepted and approved,” said Travis DeBoer, senior account manager, Danfoss Power Solutions.

Danfoss provided a quote and was ultimately awarded the business. The switch from four-wire spiral hoses and fittings to two-wire braided hoses and fittings resulted in a 31% cost reduction for the manufacturer. In addition, the hose’s greater flexibility will enable easier installation on the OEM’s assembly lines. When it comes time to change hose assemblies, end users will also benefit from the hose’s increased flexibility and lower cost.

The 100R12 hose performance specification was used to determine the hose routing on the electric backhoe, and the OEM was too far along in the design phase to change this. On future generations or for other machines where space is limited, however, engineers can now design the routing based on the greater flexibility of EC881 hose.

As a result of the backhoe project, the OEM is actively looking at other applications where it can use EC881 hose in place of four-wire spiral hose. And as these successful integrations increase, Danfoss representatives anticipate other OEMs will do the same.

“It's a breakthrough, in my opinion, because we've taken the industry norm of four-wire spiral hose – which is perceived as stronger and more durable – and come out with a product that still meets those requirements, but in a lower-cost hose construction,” DeBoer concluded.

Printing gargoyles for Notre Dame!

Rapid leaps in innovation characterise the development of additive manufacturing processes. Rotterdam-based company Concr3de has been working on a 3D printer for stone for more than five years, developing an inkjet technique to participate in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. They achieved this aim using automation technology from Festo.

Interior after the fire
Architectural applications were the catalyst for the development of Armadillo White, the inkjet 3D stone printer. The founders of Concr3de, architects Eric Geboers and Matteo Baldessari, started with a geopolymer - a material made by binding a residual product from the coal and steel industry with a chemical binder (“ink”). They proposed using the burnt remains of the Paris cathedral as raw material to repair the damaged masonry, because the lack of craftsmen and original raw materials made it difficult to reconstruct the destroyed parts using medieval techniques.

In order to develop their 3D printer, Concr3de needed components that would function reliably for a long time under difficult conditions and be easily scalable. The supplier's knowledge of software technology and service were also important to them.

Automation solutions.
They identified Festo as a possible partner through similar 3D printing projects and asked Jeroen te Brake, additive manufacturing specialist at Festo Netherlands, for support. He used Festo’s EXCM product demo box to test that the printer principle worked and to identify an appropriate linear drive for the handling system to drive the movements of the print head. The Festo ELGA actuator was chosen for three reasons: it can have a positive pressure applied internally to prevent the ingress of dust, it can be supplied in long lengths, and it has a good protective cover. Festo also mounted the actuator upside down so that no dust could fall into it. In addition to the ELGA axis, the control system, the Z-axis components, and the fluid supply for the binder and piping also came from the Festo range.

Using data from Concr3de, Festo meticulously calculated the axes, gearbox, motor and control to obtain the correct inertia ratio. Integrating a Siemens controller was also easy. All Concr3de then had to do was drag the appropriate function blocks for the communication lines from Festo's standard software libraries into the right place. Thanks to Festo's configuration tool, only the positions to be moved had to be entered and a plan of each movement could be created. Festo provided engineering support and training to Concr3de throughout.

Rising from the ashes.

Evert Kranendonk, Concr3de & Jeroen te Brake, Festo
with the 3D printed striga
.
The collaboration between Concr3de and Festo has been successful. Printing with the ashes of the building is not only much faster, but also gives the building a history. The necessary scans for the 3D reconstruction are available because American scientist Andrew Tallon fully 3D mapped the building in 2013. Concr3de used one of his scans to reconstruct a sculpture from Notre-Dame, a striga, which is a bird-like demon.

The company printed a 30cm high model of the stone carving, using limestone powder and a binder, in five hours. Tests at the Delft University of Technology have shown that the result is in no way inferior to real limestone.

Heavy duty parking brake on-detection switches.

Control Products, Inc (CPI), offers many high-performance product lines developed specifically for and with OEMs in construction, off-highway, agriculture, mining, subsea, oil & gas, and other challenging markets. One application area that illustrates CPI’s capability for specialist product development and supply is that of parking brake on-detection switches used in construction equipment and agricultural machinery as well as heavy-duty vehicles. Following its recent acquisition by The Variohm Group, CPI is available throughout Europe by Variohm EuroSensor.

E-series waterproof limit switch from CPI shown as part of a complete switch assembly

Parking brake on-detection tasks can be reliably and cost-effectively fulfilled with CPI’s durable E1 series IP68 rated waterproof limit switches. With the actuator switch overmoulded with a choice of Santoprene (industrial grade) or Neoprene (military grade) boot materials, their complete resistance to water and salt spray, dirt, dust, and oils is ensured. Alternatively, for use in more demanding environments with endurance rated in millions of switching cycles, CPI’s J-series ball switches feature a patented, 100% waterproof sealing mechanism and optional extended temperature range capability.

Specifically, the E1120 series waterproof limit switch has a low simulated roller angle mount design with a narrow profile angle mount bracket for compact installation within the brake handle housing. With its all-stainless-steel construction the momentary action switch can be supplied to meet operational standards for military use or heavy-duty industrial applications where endurance is estimated to 100,00 cycles for lower current rating variants. Load ratings from 2A to 15A across 12 to 28 VDC are available as well as AC voltage rated switching versions. Like all CPI products the E1120 can be customised for mounting and switch actuator configuration to meet the application requirements. Electrical connection is via flying leads or optional Packard Weatherpak connector. The E-series waterproof switches have a high reputation in many other applications where safety is critical. These include but are not restricted to alarm back up, interlock switches, hopper door switches and valve position sensing.

J-series ball switch
J4 series ball switches can fulfil parking brake on-detection and other applications where a lever actuator is utilised with completely submersible performance as well as optional features which include long life endurance ratings as high as five million cycles and temperature ratings from -55 to 205 ⁰C. For maximum operational reliability, the J4’s patented ball carrier design prevents contaminate materials from jamming the ball mechanism.

Originally designed for demanding military vehicle applications and well suited to real heavy-duty industrial and commercial machinery use, these switches offer 28 VDC, 5A electrical ratings and optional SPST, normally open or normally closed contact configuration. Along with demanding end of travel and safety lock applications across industrial and military systems and equipment, CPI’s J4 ball switches are also used in critical vehicle applications as the main sensor for neutral safety systems in industrial vehicles where the primary purpose of the switch is to detect that the vehicle is in a neutral gear before starting.

Expansion on reinforced concrete bridges.

When a major British structural health monitoring systems company were called in to urgently evaluate problematic expansion joints on a reinforced concrete motorway bridge, they required not just an extremely fast delivered solution for several linear displacement sensors but also a combined accuracy, temperature stability and environmental specification that would be beyond the capabilities of most suppliers.
Positek’s custom sensors shown in-situ for horizontal and vertical displacement measurement of expansion joints on a reinforced concrete motorway bridge.

Compounded by such restraints they contacted Positek Limited who pulled out the stops and within a one-week timescale delivered around forty custom-built sensors featuring a unique differential coil design with electronic temperature compensation and full IP68 protection. Based on Positek’s PIPS™ non-contacting sensor technology – a compelling alternative to LVDT and potentiometric displacement sensors – the long life and exceptionally durable sensors deliver consistently high accuracy linear position measurement in the harshest environments.

The expansion gap on a typical road bridge is expected to linearly expand and contract around 1 mm over a temperature range of -20 to +35°C. In order to precisely monitor abnormal non-linear gap movement in both vertical and horizontal planes and in real time, the overall accuracy offered by the sensor’s had to be excellent. Due to mechanical expansion as well as a temperature shift in the sensor electronics, it was decided to custom modify the standard coil design of Positek’s S115 series linear displacement sensor and integrate thermal drift compensation to boost precision and temperature stability.

The standard PIPS coil design features a fixed reference coil, an active coil and a one-piece metal target. The custom modification introduces a second active coil in place of the reference coil with a metal target spanning both coils. This differential layout was further enhanced by modelling the sensor’s thermal coefficient and factoring the values into temperature compensation electronics that was integrated into main housing. Sensors with a 5 mm displacement range were supplied for the application and arranged vertically and horizontally on brackets supplied by the customer. The modified design can be supplied with displacement ranges as low as 1 mm. As well as improve the measurement linearity over the temperature range, the modification also increased the gain by a factor of three and reduced the electrical noise by two- to three-times - which was of benefit for the multiple measurement instrumentation system the customer developed for the application.

Positek’s linear displacement sensors, even as standard components, offer environmental ratings up-to and exceeding IP68 protection levels and 10-bar submersible pressure endurance. The 35 mm diameter push-rod sensor used for this challenging measurement task was housed in 316 stainless steel and fully sealed to protect the sensor electronics against rain, road salt and sea water corrosion as well as the potential for frosts and high-humidity. The durable sensors also impress with standard shock and vibration specification values of 10g (IEC 68-2-6) and 40g (IEC 68-2-29) respectively. As with the standard PIPS technology design, this custom differential model is contactless and offers extremely long working life.

For this application, the custom sensors included industry standard 4…20 mA outputs with continuous proportional and absolute output with no need for additional signal conditioning. M8 rod-eye bearing fixings and cable gland/flying lead electrical connections facilitated straightforward commissioning. Positek’s linear displacement sensors are also available in a wide choice standard electrical outputs with various electrical connection options and calibrated output-to-length ratios.

Positek successfully manufactured and delivered the fully requested quantity of customised displacement sensors within the one-week timescale required by the customer to accommodate a scheduled maintenance closure of the motorway bridge.

Air quality in construction.

Praxis/Urban units are part of a solution from South Coast Science, which allows contractors to meet air quality monitoring requirements during construction and roadworks in town and city centres.

Monitor on construction hoarding
(Adrian Thiedeman, EM-Monitors)
All local authorities in London have declared air quality management areas (AQMA's) that cover their entire borough. The control of dust and emissions during construction projects is now a requirement in London boroughs and for many City Councils across Britain.

As a result, under Section 61 of the Control of Pollution Act 1974, construction or roadworks contractors must set out plans for air quality monitoring and dust management in order to gain consent for the works. Noise and vibration management also falls under Section 61.

Praxis/Urban units are able to offer a reliable, robust solution ‘out of the box’ to monitor:

  • Particulates: PM10, PM2.5, PM1
  • Gases: (4 x selectable)
  • Temperature, relative humidity
  • Location (GPS)

Data is securely transferred to customers in real-time and accessed via any internet-enabled device, wherever they are in the world. This means data can easily be viewed using a smartphone or tablet. Data is securely stored in the cloud and device diagnostics and updates are made remotely, reducing the need for visits to site for either maintenance or calibration of the units.

For the end-user, this really is a plug and play solution, leaving them to concentrate on the construction project without getting bogged down in the details of compliance.

South Coast Science works with EM-Monitors, whose monitoring and testing services include the supply of Praxis/Urban devices to industry as well as training. They also work with consultants, manufacturers and end-users to understand their application and provide the best monitoring solutions in a number of fields including stack, water and biogas.

“Our air quality customers need systems that give precise, accurate and reliable results that can be relied upon to truly represent the actual conditions on-site. The Praxis/Urban delivers all of this,” says Adrian Thiedeman, EM-Monitors.

Faster and simpler connectivity couplings.

Eaton has expanded its fluid conveyance portfolio with a new Multiplate system for its Flat Face (FF) Series Quick Disconnect Couplings. The new offering enables more compact, powerful and fuel-efficient machines in industries like agriculture, construction and commercial transport.

The innovative Multiplate system supports two to six FF Quick Disconnect Couplings simultaneously and makes connectivity both faster and simpler during assembly and maintenance. Its compact design offers manufacturers greater design flexibility and allows for the creation of smaller, lighter and highly energy-efficient machines. Manufacturers can benefit from the system`s optimized weight, and the ability to easily move attachments and create connections in the field. Simple assembly, installation and maintenance is further supported by an internal mechanism that lowers the force to connect by 40 percent and the ability to integrate Eaton’s Flat Face Series Disconnect couplings.

“Our new Multiplate system enhances all the benefits of our market-leading FF Series Quick Disconnect Couplings,” said Christian Kuenstel, product manager, Connectors, EMEA, Eaton. “With many industries seeing growing demand for more compact and powerful machines, our innovative system enables greater flexibility in machine design, as well as ease-of-use for operators and outstanding reliability and corrosion resistance. Our wide range of customization options can meet the needs of just about any application, with the added peace of mind that comes from our global footprint, comprehensive supporting services and broad fluid conveyance portfolio.”

Currently, Eaton’s FF series support 60 percent higher working pressures and up to 74 percent higher flow rates compared to ISO 16028 standards, which result in lower energy loss and optimized fuel consumption. The new Multiplate system further maximizes machines performance, and also enhances machine reliability and safety by eliminating the risk of crossed lines.

The Multiplate system is made with Eaton’s eco-friendly and nickel-free Guardian Seal™ coating, which comes standard on the Quick Disconnect Couplings in the system’s fixed and movable plate. This coating enables up to 1,000 hours of corrosion resistance even in the harshest environments. The Multiplate system’s fixed plate, moving plate and handle also come in anodized aluminum to ensure longevity.

Cleanliness is another crucial factor to the performance and operational lifetime of hydraulic systems. When using Eaton’s connect-under-pressure plug, FF Quick Disconnect couplings can be connected at up to 350 bar residual pressure without leaking or taking in air and contaminants. This enables faster maintenance by not requiring the time or specialized tools needed to depressurize the entire system. Eaton’s Multiplate system further reduces the risk of contamination thanks to an integrated sealing band between the plates and a dust cap that automatically closes when couplings are disconnected. Designed to be highly customizable, Eaton’s Multiplate system also offers optional electrical connectors, specialized couplings for water or air and flat face couplings in alternative materials.

High-accuracy laser levels.

Fluke has introduced a new series of point, line, and rotary laser levels with improved durability, accuracy, and performance. These new professional-grade tools have been engineered by their company Pacific Laser Systems (PLS) to meet Fluke's high standards for accuracy, ruggedness, and dependability to ensure the lasers will maintain their precision for years to come.

They are designed to meet the demands of harsh construction environments while easing interior and exterior layout work. The 11 new lasers provide bright, crisp reference points and lines for quick and accurate indoor and outdoor layout, helping to complete projects on time.

Studies have shown that green appears up to four times brighter than red to the human eye, which makes the green lasers more visible on the jobsite, so most models are available as red (R) and green (G) variants. The new PLS 3R and 3G, PLS 5R and 5G, PLS 6R and 6G, PLS 180R and 180G Laser Levels are accurate to ≤3mm at 10m and are built to provide IP54 dust and water resistance and to withstand a 1 metre drop. Each model features a fast settling, self-levelling pendulum to give accurate point and reference lines almost instantly. All are equipped with a pendulum lock, ensuring safe transport and to avoid potential wear.

The PLS 3R & 3G Point Lasers offer 3 point directions; the 5R & 5G Point Lasers offer 5 point directions; the 6R & 6G Line and Point Lasers offer 4 point directions plus a 180° horizontal and vertical line; the 180R & 180G Line Lasers offer a horizontal and vertical line. Fluke has also introduced three PLS Rotary Laser Levels – the HV2R and HV2G which emit a laser line in the horizontal or vertical plane; and the H2, horizontal-only, red laser level.

Optional accessories include laser detectors and reflective targets, a floor stand, a wall mount and a UB9 Universal Ceiling/Wall Bracket. All PLS laser levels are backed by a three-year best-in-class warranty.

Strain sensors in concrete pumps.

The trend on truck-mounted concrete pumps is for greater reach with less weight. Technical advances at Schwing are currently making it one of the market leaders in this field. In order to raise operator comfort levels on truck-mounted concrete pumps with large booms, the company has launched an innovative vibration damping system. In partnership with Baumer Electric, the company has developed a new strain sensor with an IP69K protection rating and an exceptionally broad measuring range to provide precise signaling of deflections as they occur in the boom.

Since its formation in the 1930s, they have been designing, constructing and selling pumps, machines and plant equipment for the production, transport and reprocessing of concrete: batching plants, truck-mixers, stationary and truck-mounted concrete pumps as well as recycling plants. Whether concreting a swimming pool in the front garden of a family home or realizing prestigious public projects such as the One World Trade Center in New York (USA), or the third Bosporus bridge in Turkey, the machines and plant are deployed wherever concrete is used to provide permanent stability. With six manufacturing sites and subsidiaries or representatives in more than 100 countries, the company provides efficient, reliable and long-term solutions throughout the world. Extensive in-house production capacity for core components guarantees strict inspection processes and high product quality.

Truck-mounted concrete pumps of various sizes and types are manufactured at sites in Herne (D), Chennai (Ind), and Sao Paulo (BZ). The models with the longest placing booms are manufactured at the Group’s German headquarters. With a new boom drive concept, high-strength steel, less weight, and more operator comfort, they are Schwing’s answer to the market's increasing demands in terms of economics, ecology and ergonomics.

Modern placing booms have a reach of almost 65 meters. With highly efficient twin cylinder piston pumps and a pressure of up to 85 bar, they pump concrete at up to 164 m3 per hour. This obviously causes vibrations in the boom. In order to be able to offer end users improved operator comfort at the end hose, Schwing has developed an innovative vibration damping concept which has included a complete revision of the hydraulic elements. A precision transducer was required which could pick up the elongations from the signal boom caused by movement of the whole placing boom, and which would then transmit the command variables for the vibration damping. A force sensor would have to be mechanically built into the direct flow of forces from the arm and then exactly matched to the machine geometry. It was possible to significantly reduce the development effort by absorbing the movement over the elongation. The effect of a force always produces elongations in a mechanical structure. These elongations depend on the geometry of the structure to be measured and the modulus of elasticity.

“We developed a customer-specific, innovative strain sensor in close collaboration with Baumer Electric AG which comfortably overcomes all the challenges,” explains Reiner Vierkotten, Senior Engineer Control Systems at Schwing GmbH. “The new high-strength steels we have used allow the mechanical stresses and elongations to take place in higher areas than in previously used materials. Conventional strain sensors cannot operate in these areas.”

A completely new set of sensor mechanics was developed using FEM simulations with a measuring range of ± 2000 µm/m. The easy-to-mount sensor with long-term seal functions perfectly in multi-shift operation in spite of the tough conditions on building sites. It is calibrated at the factory which speeds up installation and any possible replacement work. The new sensor, with its on-board electronics, supplies a high-resolution digital CANopen signal directly to the truck-mounted concrete pump’s control system.

Compared to force sensors, which have to be precisely adjusted to the machine geometry, the strain sensor can be easily mounted at the optimum position with just two bolts. This does not affect the structure of the machine, save times in development and makes mounting easy. The robust design of the sensor makes it impervious to shocks, impacts, and other mechanical influences and is therefore ideal for use in the construction environment. At the same time, it is very gentle, reacts quickly, and can accurately detect even the slightest elongation or compression. It is resistant to wind and weather due to its a corrosion-resistant housing. With a certificated protection class of IP69K, its seal is absolutely guaranteed and can be cleaned with high-pressure or steam cleaning systems.

“We are very pleased with our collaboration,” confirms Vierkotten. “The innovative damping system is also available for the latest S 65 SXF truck-mounted concrete pump from SCHWING which was launched at the beginning of 2018 at the World of Concrete trade fair in Las Vegas. Following comprehensive prototype testing and optimization during the development phases, the new DST55R strain sensor was successfully put into volume production by Baumer. We can imagine using Baumer sensors for future projects on our truck-mounted concrete pumps.”
