Fluid conveyance on a global scale.

Danfoss has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Alfagomma, a global manufacturer of hoses and fittings headquartered in Vimercate (I). Alfagomma will become part of the Fluid Conveyance division, a core business within the Danfoss Power Solutions segment, creating a leading global player in fluid conveyance that strengthens the ability to serve customers globally.

Founded in 1956, Alfagomma is a privately owned global manufacturer and distributor of hoses and fittings under the brand names ALFAGOMMA, Dunlop Hiflex, and Argus. The company’s products are used in mobile hydraulics, industrial applications including mining and oil & gas, marine, shipbuilding, and other industries.

Alfagomma has a strong global presence with 28 production and assembly sites, about 4,500 employees, and sales of approximately €600 million.

Hydraulic hose.

The Aeroquip by Danfoss FC619C Corrugated Suction Hose, designed for hydraulic suction and return lines has just been launched. With its superior flexibility and resistance to high temperatures, abrasion, and vacuum collapse, FC619C is engineered to extend hose life and simplify installation. The hose is suitable for mobile and industrial equipment applications.

FC619C hose features the industry’s tightest corrugated hose bend radius. Its one-to-one ratio bend radius, combined with its reduced force to bend, makes the hose exceptionally easy to handle and install in tight spaces.

Built to exceed SAE 100R4 and ISO 18752 standards, FC619C hose is designed to ensure reliable, leak-free performance. The hose is constructed of a nitrile inner tube, helical wire between two textile reinforcement layers, and a DuraTUFF+ abrasion-resistant cover, which offers 100 times the abrasion resistance of standard rubber. The hose features a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 135°C (-40°F to 275°F) with superior high-temperature performance. Its resistance to collapse and buckling maximizes hose lifespan, while its chemical resistance and Class 0 leakage per SAE J1176 provide reliable, leak-free operation.

Aeroquip by Danfoss FC619C Corrugated Suction Hose is available in -12 to -48 sizes (inner diameter of 0.75 to 3 inches/19 to 76.2 millimeters) and is qualified for use with Danfoss 1A and 1G fittings. Its working pressure ranges from 60 to 305 psi (4 to 21 bar), depending on size. The hose is MSHA and ABS approved. In addition to hydraulic applications, the hose is suitable for petroleum, fuel, lubricating oil, and water suction and transfer applications.

Hose fittings manufacturer acquired.

Hydro Holding based in Castello d’Argile (I) is to become part of Danfoss Power Solutions’ Fluid Conveyance division, led by Domenico Traverso. The Fluid Conveyance division is a leading global manufacturer of hoses and fittings with renowned brands, such as Aeroquip, Weatherhead, Hansen, and Waltech. The acquisition supports the division’s strategic focus to accelerate profitable growth in line with Danfoss’ LEAP 2030 strategy. Hydro Holding will strengthen Danfoss’ hose fittings portfolio and enable the company to become a leading player in Europe.

Product ranges include hydraulic hose and fittings, engine and air conditioning hose and fittings, industrial hose and fittings, thermoplastic hose and fittings, connectors and quick-disconnect couplings, and hose machines, tools, and accessories. Hydraulic hose replacement and repair on site.

Customised hoses, fittings, and tooling to suit each site, this fully equipped containers minimise machine downtime and lost revenue.

Danfoss Power Solutions has launched its on-site hose assembly workshop program. The program brings hydraulic hose replacement and repair capabilities directly to construction, oil and gas, mining, and other sites where hydraulic equipment operates, minimising operational disruptions.

These on-site hose assembly workshops are fully equipped mobile containers stocked with the specific Danfoss hoses, fittings, and tooling to suit the needs of the work site. The workshops enable on-the-spot hose assembly creation and repair 24 hours a day, seven days a week, minimizing equipment downtime and associated costs.

Hose assembly workshops are ideal for sites where timely access to replacement and repair is critical. A hose malfunction at a remote location, for example, may require long-distance travel or equipment transportation, or an extended wait for a shipment to arrive. With an on-site workshop, staff can quickly and conveniently repair or replace hose assemblies with the exact hose and fitting types in use at the site.

“Unforeseen equipment breakdowns and maintenance issues can lead to costly downtime. Locating a service provider, ordering a replacement, waiting for the shipment, then installing a new hose assembly can cost millions in lost revenue, depending on the equipment and the site,” said Okan Cebeci, EMEA product manager, Rubber Hydraulic Hose and Fittings, Danfoss Power Solutions. “Our mobile workshops provide businesses with immediate, cost-effective access to hose repairs and replacements with high-quality, reliable Danfoss components, helping to sustain normal operations.”

The customisable configurations of Danfoss on-site hose assembly workshops enable workspace optimisation for maximum productivity. Machines can be selected and arranged within the container according to specific hose requirements and production needs. Tooling options encompass crimp machines with their respective die sets, cutting machines, and skiving machines equipped with both internal and external skiving tools. Storage options consist of hose reels, shelves, and fitting cabinets featuring ergonomic drawers. An electric control panel streamlines simultaneous operation of multiple machines.

Lower cost hose breaks through.

Backhoe loader manufacturer embraces hoses of a different stripe!

Replacing spiral hose with Danfoss EC881 braided hose has helped a major machinery OEM reduce costs while still meeting the high-pressure requirements of the application. The lighter, more flexible hose also proved beneficial for installation, maintenance, and future machine design. For the OEM and its supplier, thinking outside the spec delivered a value engineering win.

For many years now, hydraulic system pressures have been increasing in mobile machinery – all in the name of improving productivity. The hydraulic pump and downstream components have to deliver the power the machine needs to move faster, lift heavier loads, and meet other end-user requirements. This is no different on electric machines. Buyers expect the performance of an electric machine to at least match the equivalent diesel machine.

In designing a new generation of its electric backhoe loader, a major U.S. OEM specified the same high-pressure fluid conveyance components as the previous generation machine. The outcome, however, was far from the same – the result of a surprise development in the routine RFQ process.

Spiral performance from braided hose.
High-pressure applications require spiral hose. This is common knowledge based on the fact that hose pressure ratings increase with each added layer of wire. Spiral hoses commonly have 4 or 6 layers of wire reinforcement while braided hoses have only one or two layers.

Needing a hose capable of meeting working pressures of 3,800 psi, the backhoe OEM specified SAE 100R12 four-wire spiral hoses for the high-pressure line between the machine’s hydraulic pump and the main control valve. Per its usual process, the OEM issued an RFQ for these hoses to multiple suppliers.

It was during the RFQ process that Danfoss engineers identified a value engineering opportunity. The company recently launched its Aeroquip by Danfoss EC881 Dynamax hose, a two-wire braided hose with a 35% higher pressure rating than other hoses of the same type. EC881 hose is qualified to 1 million impulse cycles, a rating that traditionally requires spiral construction. With its higher pressure capabilities, EC881 hose can replace four-wire spiral hose in certain applications, providing direct cost savings as well as several design benefits. Braided hose is much more flexible than spiral hose, which makes it possible to reroute and even reduce hose lengths, contributing to further cost savings. Braided hose is also lighter in weight than spiral hose, which reduces the overall weight of the machine, contributing to fuel efficiency improvements.

The OEM’s RFQ called for size 12 (0.75-inch inner diameter) 100R12 hoses. Danfoss EC881-12 hose met the working pressure, burst pressure, and other specifications for the application, but at a much lower cost. Recognizing the potential, the project team suggested a deviation to the OEM’s engineering team. Deviations at the RFQ stage are relatively common. What made this situation unique was the switch to a different hose construction.

“The mentality has been, if I want spiral performance, I need a spiral hose. And now we’re saying there’s this braided hose that can do the same. They’re skeptical,” said Scott Larson, senior engineer, Danfoss Power Solutions.

Hose testing
To convince the OEM, Danfoss engineers needed to prove the hose’s capabilities. This involved supplying vast amounts of test data to demonstrate the hose’s performance – for instance, how many impulse cycles the EC881 hose could withstand at specific pressures.

“Once they saw the test reports and given the history and relationship we have with [the customer], it was accepted and approved,” said Travis DeBoer, senior account manager, Danfoss Power Solutions.

Danfoss provided a quote and was ultimately awarded the business. The switch from four-wire spiral hoses and fittings to two-wire braided hoses and fittings resulted in a 31% cost reduction for the manufacturer. In addition, the hose’s greater flexibility will enable easier installation on the OEM’s assembly lines. When it comes time to change hose assemblies, end users will also benefit from the hose’s increased flexibility and lower cost.

The 100R12 hose performance specification was used to determine the hose routing on the electric backhoe, and the OEM was too far along in the design phase to change this. On future generations or for other machines where space is limited, however, engineers can now design the routing based on the greater flexibility of EC881 hose.

As a result of the backhoe project, the OEM is actively looking at other applications where it can use EC881 hose in place of four-wire spiral hose. And as these successful integrations increase, Danfoss representatives anticipate other OEMs will do the same.

“It's a breakthrough, in my opinion, because we've taken the industry norm of four-wire spiral hose – which is perceived as stronger and more durable – and come out with a product that still meets those requirements, but in a lower-cost hose construction,” DeBoer concluded.
