Thermal monitoring for battery storage systems.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are essential for storing renewable energy and ensuring grid stability. However, their implementation comes with inherent risks, particularly related to lithium-ion battery fires.

ESS fires can start from thermal runaway, where one cell failure can trigger a cascade of overheating, leading to fires that are difficult to extinguish and can last for hours or even days. Should a fire breakout, hazardous gases would release from the batteries, posing health risks to nearby communities and causing environmental damage through soil and water contamination. In severe cases, BESS fires have the potential for huge disruptions to locals through property damage and even evacuations.

Traditional detection methods such as flame detectors often fail in the early stages of a BESS fire due to their reliance on visible flames or smoke, which might not be immediately present. Where flame detectors fall short, thermal imaging cameras can significantly improve protection and prevent fires before they ever reach combustion.

FLIR A700F Advance Smart Sensor
Advantages of Thermal Cameras for BESS.
Thermal cameras detect the heat signature from the onset of thermal runaway long before visible flames or smoke appear, allowing for preemptive action to mitigate risks. While flame detectors react to events that have already happened, a fixed thermal camera such as the FLIR A700F Advance Smart Sensor provides 24/7 surveillance by continuously monitoring for temperature anomalies that could indicate an impending fire, thus enabling early intervention. FLIR cameras are designed for easy integration into broader safety and control systems, allowing for automated responses such as activating suppression systems that enhance response times and efficiency.

Comparison with Other Detection Methods.
While flame detectors are designed to detect visible fire, they may miss smoldering or hidden fires—meaning an alert may not be tripped until the fire has escalated to a dangerous level. FLIR thermal imaging cameras can detect heat in low light and see the beginnings of embers as they heat up surrounding materials, even when there's no visible sign of fire. This early detection can prevent escalation or at least minimize damage by providing critical time for action before fires get out of control. Another advantage of thermal cameras is their ability to monitor large areas or multiple battery racks simultaneously, providing comprehensive coverage which is often challenging for point-specific flame detectors.

Conclusion. Incorporating FLIR thermal monitoring into BESS installations not only addresses the critical safety concerns associated with battery fires but also offers a proactive, reliable, and technologically advanced solution. By choosing a FLIR fixed thermal solution, you ensure that your energy storage systems are safeguarded with the industry's leading thermal imaging technology, protecting both your investment and the community from the devastating effects of BESS fires.

Temperature probe.

The new TF-2000 cable temperature probe from WIKA, provides reliable temperature values for refrigeration technology, heating and heat pumps. The temperature probe can easily withstand frequent changes between thawing and freezing point, as the measuring element is overmoulded with plastic and thus dust-tight and waterproof. In addition, quick-mounting brackets enable time-saving installation.

The thermometer can be mechanically stabilised using a stainless steel sleeve. This ensures increased measurement reliability in, for example, buffer tanks for heating and hot water.

The TF-2000 is completely leak-tight in accordance with IP68 ingress protection. Even without an optional probe sleeve, neither condensation nor steam can penetrate the measuring element. This minimises the risk of failures, ensures measurement accuracy, optimises service life and ensures investment security.

The model TF-2000 with a square brass sleeve can be fastened in seconds using quick-mounting brackets, without any copper tubes being soldered on. Instruments, which have several temperature measuring locations, can be equipped in a time-saving and cost-effective manner. Due to its brass design, the square sleeve ensures good heat conduction and prevents contact corrosion. There is no need to apply thermal compound – nor does this compromise on accuracy or response time.

Gold class in sustainability.

Group achieves 78 out of 100 points in the EcoVadis sustainability rating.

This combined score puts Endress+Hauser among the top 5 percent of the approximately 150,000 rated companies. The EcoVadis assessment is based on several criteria relating to the environment, labor, human rights and ethics. For Endress+Hauser, the rating is a key metric for gauging its own sustainability performance. It is also a valuable tool for the Group’s customers and suppliers, giving them transparency around whether Endress+Hauser is a reliable partner and meets international standards.

Dr Peter Selders
“Our aim is to help our customers be sustainable and efficient in their production, so we must set an example with our own business and production processes. Gold status demonstrates our commitment to being a trusted advisor and that we are moving forward successfully,” commented Dr Peter Selders, CEO of the Endress+Hauser Group.

Higher score despite more challenging requirements.
Endress+Hauser has improved its sustainability performance in essentially all areas since last year, increasing its combined score from 71 to 78. EcoVadis rated the Group particularly highly on its performance against environmental and labor standards. “We are very pleased with this result, especially considering that EcoVadis has tightened up its requirements over the same period,” said Julia Schempp, the head of the Endress+Hauser Group’s Corporate Sustainability Office.

All measures disclosed in EcoVadis audits must be supported by detailed evidence of implementation, otherwise they are not taken into account. Here, Endress+Hauser benefits from a structured approach in that it maintains robust, comprehensive documentation of its measures and KPIs. This includes clear guidelines on matters such as work safety and the management of hazardous materials.

Ambitious targets.
The Endress+Hauser Group’s sustainability efforts are also reflected in its emission reduction targets. The Group has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and thus supports the efforts of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

“Sustainability is very important to me personally. We need to protect the climate and the environment to ensure livability for future generations. When they grow up, our children should be able to enjoy the same quality of life as we do now. As a company, we can make an important contribution to shaping change for the better while still being successful financially,” concluded Dr Selders.

Secure routers and gateways.

Contemporary Controls has expanded its line of BACnet routers and gateways to incorporate HTTPS to provide secure Internet communication and protect the integrity of client data. Their resident HTTPS web servers allow for commissioning, status reporting, and troubleshooting using any standard web browser.

With the integration of building management system (BMS) networks within an IT infrastructure, BMS devices must manage a lot more traffic. Each device uses a more powerful processor to accommodate this increased traffic volume. Both models have an opto-isolated EIA-485 port with switchable DIP switches for bias and termination.

The BASrouterSX is a high-performance BACnet router that provides stand-alone routing between BACnet networks such as BACnet/IP, BACnet Ethernet (ISO 8802-3), and BACnet MS/TP. This multi-network router features an MS/TP status webpage with a graphical network map that provides real-time status of all BACnet MS/TP devices on the network. It has advanced features, such as MS/TP slave proxy support with auto-discovery and diagnostic MS/TP frame capture for Wireshark® analysis.

The BASgatewaySX Modbus to BACnet Gateway provides gateway functionality between Modbus Serial (RTU or ASCII), Modbus TCP and BACnet/IP. The gateway supports up to 200 devices and 2000 mapped points and features virtual routing that allows each connected Modbus device to appear as an individual BACnet-compliant device. Using HTTPS webpages and a resident database of common Modbus device profiles, Modbus data points from Modbus Serial or Modbus TCP devices can be mapped to BACnet objects.

Drives sustainability.

The path into a more sustainable future

The sustainability strategy at Nord Drivesystems for 2025 is focused on acting in an environmentally conscious, responsible and integer manner. A cross-divisional team as well as the management and owners are part of the implementation. Besides their own products, it includes four further fields of action.

“Our sustainability strategy for 2025 is a promise to our customers, to the public and to ourselves to consequently act in an ecological, economic and socially responsible manner”, emphasizes Carolin von Rönne from the area of Process and Organisational Development & Corporate Sustainability Management at Nord Drivesystems.

The strategy comprises five key aspects:

Products.
When it comes to sustainability, their products are a top priority. This is because the design, life cycle and application areas have an impact on the environment. The concept of sustainability is therefore already rooted in the product development process. “Drives can be found in many areas of industry, where they consume a large proportion of the energy used,” explains Carolin von Rönne. “With efficient drive solutions such as the IE5+ synchronous motor, we want to make a significant contribution to reducing COemissions.” The Nord ECO service furthermore supports companies in finding the most efficient drive solutions for them.

Governance & processes.
The sustainability management was introduced at Nord in 2022. Since then, the company has achieved important milestones such as an annual sustainability report according to GRI, environmental certifications and the integration of international structures. The central objective in this field of action is the establishment of an international governance structure and CSRD-compliant reporting for the entire Nord Drivesystems Group with 48 subsidiaries in 36 countries because the success of other factors – in particular environment, energy and climate – depends on it.

Environment.

Nord's IE5+ synchronous motor:
high efficiency and compact design

In order to coordinate structured measures and document them in a legally secure manner, international environmental management is essential for the Group. This is implemented in accordance with ISO14001 for the largest subsidiaries. In addition, the climate balance for Scope 1–3 is determined group-wide. The Group further aims to reduce its energy consumption and amount of waste as well as increase the share of self-produced electric power and the use of renewable energies. Existing biodiversity areas are to be further expanded.

People.
In times of skills shortage, Nord continues to increase its attractiveness as an employer. The company is currently rolling out a global digital learning management system to offer all employees the opportunity for further individual development. Further targeted campaigns and measures are intended to promote diversity among the workforce. “Inclusion, respect for human rights, strengthening our work culture, safety and continuous transfer of knowledge are only some of the topics we would like to promote”, says Carolin von Rönne.

Supply chain.
Nord wants to reassure its customers and employees that sustainable production is given high priority both at manufacturing facilities and in the upstream supply chain. Risk analyses and other processes are carried out within the framework of the Germany Act on Corporate Due Diligence Obligations in Supply Chains (LKSG).

Subminiature photoelectric sensors.

Advanced design features and can be installed in tight spaces, overcoming the limitations of more costly technologies.

IDEC Corporation is expanding its already extensive photoelectric (PE) sensor portfolio with the new SA1N series of space-saving subminiature PE sensors. The SA1N series provides high accuracy and performance, and it is available in compact barrel and block form factors.

(not to scale)
Smaller and superior sensing.
For industrial equipment, the intersecting trends of increasing automation and reduced installation space mean that designers need compact and high-performance technologies for discrete sensing applications. General-purpose sensors simply don’t fit, and other technologies such as fiber optic devices are more costly and require separate amplifiers which complicate installation requirements. Even as acceptable form factors shrink, there remains an escalating need for better accuracy, detection distances, and response times.

To meet these needs, IDEC has added the SA1N series of subminiature PE sensors to its product lineup. The SA1N sensors are available in two versions:

  • A barrel-mount fiber-type diffuse-reflective infrared LED style, secured with M6 nuts through a mounting hole
  • A block-type convergent-reflective red LED style, secured with two mounting holes located at a 14mm pitch

Both versions are all-in-one devices with built-in amplifiers and sensitivity adjustment control. The barrel-mount version has a 3 to 50mm sensing range, while the block-type can detect over a 5 to 30mm sensing range. Both models are available in NPN or PNP light-on configurations, and both provide a rapid 0.5msec maximum response time.

The sensors each come with flexible 2-meter pigtail wiring, functioning at standard 24VDC with minimal current draw. They operate over a wide -25 to +55DegC temperature range. The barrel-mount version uses a stainless-steel housing and plastic encapsulation to achieve an IP67 rating, while the block-type is rated at IP64.

Effective detection for more applications.
Many types of production line equipment and manufacturing machinery—ranging across industries as varied as medical, food & beverage, and more—require positive presence detection of machine components and positioning/counting of products. The SA1N series of subminiature PE sensors will fit into the limited space available for these types of applications, and it offers a favorable price/performance ratio compared with other more esoteric technology options. The IDEC SA1N series of subminiature PE sensors are part of a much larger sensing solutions portfolio, providing flexible design options for a wide variety of applications. As with all its products, IDEC offers free tech support for the SA1N, with no service or support contract required.

New series of displays.

Offers greater design flexibility and faster time to market.

The Danfoss DM series of programmable displays has been expanded with the launch of the DM-Qt series. The DM-Qt display series supports Qt as a plug-in to PLUS+1® GUIDE, where user interface (UI) design can now be developed through the Qt framework — the new standard for creating embedded display UIs in the automobile industry. Qt offers greater design flexibility and ease of use, enabling displays to be programmed faster and reducing time to market.

In addition to faster, easier UI design, Qt tools enable reuse of templates across multiple device platforms and display brands. Elements of the UI design can be scaled per application requirements. This eliminates the need to create new UI designs from scratch for each different machine platform or display manufacturer.

“Designing graphical user interfaces for our DM displays using Qt tools should take about half as much time as it would with other programs due to its extensive library of preexisting elements and a seamless workflow between design and development,” said Herman Oberoi, Senior Portfolio Manager, Displays, Danfoss Power Solutions. “By supporting the industry standard solution for UI development, we now have a great hardware product with incredible design capabilities powered by Qt.”

DM-Qt displays enable graphical development in Qt Design Studio. Application programming is managed in Danfoss’ PLUS+1 GUIDE software, and the PLUS+1 Service Tool combines Qt-created graphics with application code to program DM-Qt displays. Danfoss will continue to offer its standard DM displays with UI design managed in VBSE, Danfoss’ proprietary graphics development tool within PLUS+1 GUIDE.

DM-Qt displays are available in the same sizes and with the same options as standard DM displays. Sizes include 7-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch displays, with features such as outstanding sunlight and wide-angle viewability, automatic brightness adjustment, superior touch responsiveness, and rugged design with high ingress protection ratings.

TOC monitor.

A new generation of TOC monitors for regulatory compliance in pure, ultrapure and WFI water applications has been announced by Swan Analytical. With simple, intuitive controls and rugged components, the new AMI-II LineTOC analysers enhance reliability in the continuous measurement of total organic carbon (TOC).

The AMI-II LineTOC instruments have been developed to meet a number of important customer needs,” explained Swan’s Russell Culver (Pharma Business Development Manager*). “First and foremost, the monitor enables Pharmacopoeia compliance whilst supporting FDA 21 CFR Part 11, providing a compliant audit trail. However, the instrument is simple to operate, requiring minimal training, even for validation and calibration. Combine this with long-term reliability, durability and the AMI-II LineTOC lowers not just the cost of purchase, but also the cost of ownership.”

TOC derived from organics is one of the most common sources of contamination in ultra-pure water systems, so monitoring is mandatory in the pharmaceutical industry, where UPW is used as a process medium, as a solvent, as an ingredient, as medical water for injection, and within APIs, intermediates and reagents. Continuous monitoring and a fast reliable response time are therefore essential – to detect any contamination, to monitor trends and raise alarms of excursions.

The new AMI-II LineTOC provides reagent-free TOC measurement by conductivity differential before and after UV-oxidation. With a new enhanced display/transmitter the analyser offers a wide measurement range from 0 to 1000 ppb with a resolution of 0.01 ppb in its lowest range. A compact version of the AMI-II LineTOC is also available to facilitate greater flexibility where space is of a premium, making it suitable for integration in water purification systems or distribution skids.

Both versions of the AMI-II LineTOC are supplied as a complete working system, which means that it is not necessary to purchase secondary equipment, such as a calibration module for example. Standard equipment includes three sample bottles that can be utilised during functionality and system suitability tests, or as the repository for grab samples – thereby avoiding the need for laboratory analysis.

Looking forward, Russell says: “We are tremendously excited about the opportunities that exist for this new generation of monitors in a variety of sectors where the continuous monitoring of pure and ultrapure water is either essential or mandatory, or both. For example, with IQ/OQ/PQ validation and full compliance to Global Pharmacopoeias and FDA 21 CFR Part 11, the new AMI-II LineTOC will bring peace of mind to pharmaceutical manufacturers and system providers alike.”

  • CE, FCC Class A, ROHS certified
  • -10°C to +60°C operating temperature (-10°C to +70°C with fan)
  • 12V to 24V DC (Terminal block)
  • 1x PCIe in x4 size (supports x4), 1x PCIe in x4 size (supports x1), 2x PCI (33MHz/32bit 5V)

Measuring only 164.6mm (W) x 214.6mm (D) x 135.6mm (H), the Nuvo-2822 is perfect for systems with space constraints. It can easily be fitted into a compact control cabinet, mounted within machinery, or tucked away in a tight industrial workspace without affecting accessibility. This small footprint allows it to be integrated into environments where rack computers simply wouldn’t fit.

Aside from its size, this box PC is also made to be durable. The rugged build is designed to handle extreme conditions, with an operating temperature range of -10°C to 60°C or, with the addition of a fan, as high as 70°C. Its Intel® Alder Lake N CPU can process large amounts of data in real time. The Alder Lake N family of CPUs are low-power, cost-effective processors designed primarily for embedded systems, IoT, and edge computing using Intel's 12th-generation Alder Lake architecture. Unlike mainstream Alder Lake chips, the N series focuses solely on efficiency cores (E-cores) rather than performance cores (P-cores).

Its wide-range DC input (12V to 24V) further enhances its ability to adapt to different industrial power setups. This flexibility is particularly valuable in industrial automation, transportation, and remote monitoring applications, where power sources can vary.

Despite its small form factor, the device has dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, four USB 3.0 ports, and two COM ports, offering plenty of options for integrating with existing systems. Support for PCIe and PCI expansion cards makes it flexible enough to handle specialised tasks in industrial control or automation, and storage options are versatile, too, with an M.2 SATA SSD slot and a 2.5” drive bay for added capacity.

The Nuvo-2822 introduces a new feature for improved power efficiency: its “Super Power Saving Mode” dramatically reduces energy consumption when the system is in standby (S4/S5) mode. This makes it practical for anyone aiming to optimise energy and improve the sustainability of their operations, not to mention cost savings, without sacrificing functionality.

Thanks to its compatibility with Neousys’ 100 TOPS Intelligent Frame Grabber Card, powered by the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX, the system can also be easily upgraded to handle AI inference tasks. This means existing x86-based setups can be transformed into high-performance AI platforms without needing an entirely new infrastructure. By integrating the Intelligent Frame Grabber Card, the Nuvo-2822 can efficiently handle object detection, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance—all at the edge, reducing latency and reliance on cloud computing.

The Nuvo-2822 offers a high degree of flexibility. It balances performance, efficiency, and adaptability, meaning it can fit naturally into a range of industrial scenarios. Its compact design means it can run easily in tight spaces and contribute to energy-conscious operations, and its practicality makes it an all-arounder for industrial systems with modern challenges.

Pressure Relief Valve.

Deliver leak-tight service at very high pressures for hydrogen storage, transport and refuelling stations.

The Anderson Greenwood Type 84 Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) has been introduced by Emerson. This is specially designed to protect tanks and vessels used in hydrogen and other high-pressure gas applications. With Arlon® 3000XT thermoplastic seating and ASME SA-479 Type S21800 stainless steel spindle material, the Type 84 PRV delivers exceptional leak-tight performance, resistance to embrittlement, optimum seat tightness, high reliability and long service life.

PRVs are frequently used in traditional applications, but they are not designed to handle extremely small molecules at very high pressures. Therefore, they are not ideal for hydrogen gas, which can diffuse into metals and cause embrittlement of PRV internals, increasing the risk of leaks, failures and safety problems.

To address these and other issues, Type 84 PRVs are constructed for high-pressure gas applications, with a range of 6,000 pounds per square inch gauge (413 bar gauge) to 20,000 psig (1,379 barg) for H2 and He, and a range of 6,000 psig (413 barg) to 21,756 psig (1,500 barg) for all other gases. It reaches full lift at less than 5% overpressure to protect the vessel or tank to which they are affixed, with zero leakage at 90% of set pressure. The valves feature a unique cartridge assembly design to apply uniform spring pressure, resulting in secure seat sealing and leak-tight performance. They are factory tested with helium and nitrogen, both accepted industry-wide as a substitute for hydrogen.

Anderson Greenwood Type 84 valves comply with key industry standards for safety and performance, including American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section VIII and XIII, National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NB) certification, and American Petroleum Institute (API) 527.
