Electrical PCIe® up to 64 GT/s.

Anritsu has helped AMD accelerate the testing of electrical compliance for PCI Express® (PCIe®) specification for pre-production AMD EPYC™ CPUs. Achieving a maximum data rate of 64 GT/s using the high-performance Anritsu BERT Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A, testing was done under challenging backchannel conditions with insertion loss exceeding the specified 27 dB in the CEM specification, along with stress conditions applied using Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC).

“In collaboration with Anritsu, we have achieved a stable demonstration of electrical compliance up to 64 GT/s,” said Amit Goel, corporate vice president, Server Engineering, AMD. “This early validation furthers our commitment to delivering reliable, high-speed I/O for future platforms powered by our next-generation AMD EPYCTM CPUs."

“AMD is a key technology partner in advancing PCIe technology,” said Takeshi Shima, Director, Senior Vice President, Test & Measurement Company President of Anritsu Corporation. “We will continue to respond to various test needs and expand functions for PCIe compliance testing, while also contributing to quality evaluation and design efficiency of PCIe devices through proposals to standards organisations.”

PCIe 6.0 technology is the next-generation standard that provides a bandwidth of 64 GT/s per lane and up to 256 GB/s in a x16 configuration as a high-speed interface between internal devices such as CPUs, GPUs, SSDs, and network cards. While maintaining compatibility with previous standards, it achieves highly reliable and efficient communications in fields such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), HPC (High Performance Computing), and high-speed storage, greatly contributing to improving the performance of next-generation data centres and analytical systems.

Innovative protocol analyzer and exerciser.

Teledyne LeCroy has introduced the Summit M64, a PCI Express (PCIe®) protocol analyser/exerciser to their product lineup. This cutting-edge system captures and generates PCIe 6.x, CXL 3.x, and NVMe 2.x traffic at speeds up to 64 GT/s with x4 link widths. The Summit M64 features a groundbreaking design that integrates a flexible host emulator adapter directly into the platform, eliminating the need for a separate test platform.

The Summit M64 addresses the complexity of modern PCIe, CXL, and NVMe design and testing with a comprehensive range of capabilities:

  • Combined Protocol Analyser and Exerciser: Operates with the integrated host emulator adapter or with direct connect device emulator card.
  • Full Exerciser functionality: Generates high performance 64 GT/s traffic for devices with link widths up to four lanes and includes standardised compliance test suites.
  • Versatile Analyzer Operation: Supports a range of Interposers for PCIe form factors, including Card Electromechanical (CEM), M.2, and Enterprise Datacenter Standard Form
  • Factor (EDSFF)/Open Compute Project Network Interface Card (OCP NIC).
  • Advanced Software Application: Controls the protocol analyzer to acquire, record, decode, analyze, and display complex high-speed PCI Express I/O streams, and features Teledyne LeCroy’s industry standard analyzer CATC Trace™ hierarchical display, real-time statistics, protocol traffic summaries, detailed error reports, powerful scripting, and user-defined test reports.
  • Realistic Traffic Generation: The same software application controls the protocol exerciser to provide realistic traffic, including programmable error injection, to devices under test and can also emulate complex host- or device-side traffic.

“With this introduction of the Summit M64, Teledyne LeCroy reinforced its industry leadership by providing a powerful platform to develop and troubleshoot the next generation of high performance PCIe devices” said Joe Mendolia, Vice President Marketing, Protocol Solutions Group, Teledyne LeCroy. “We are working closely with the computer industry to provide the analysis features companies need for PCIe storage, HPC and AI technology development. We are confident that engineers transitioning to PCIe 6.x will appreciate the rich library of decodes and analysis capabilities available on all of Teledyne LeCroy’s PCIe test tools.”

PCie Compliance Test.

The PCI-SIG® has adopted the Anritsu Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A BERT to support compliance tests at PCI-SIG Workshops. The MP1900A was selected to meet the increasing demand for PCI Express® (PCIe®) 3.0/4.0 Link Equalization Tests (Link EQ Test) and Receiver jitter tolerance Tests (Rx Test).

“With its Compliance Test reproducibility and convenience, the MP1900A is a test instrument for PCIe Compliance Workshops that offers capacity improvement and contributes to the widespread adoption of the PCI Express standard,” PCI-SIG Chairman and President Al Yanes said. “We look forward to Anritsu’s future contributions to PCI Express technology.”

Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A Outline.
The Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A is the industry-leading multi-channel BERT. It integrates a high-quality waveform Pulse Pattern Generator (PPG) that produces 115 fs rms residual jitter, high-input-sensitivity Error Detector (ED) that creates a 15 mV eye height (typical), and a high-accuracy jitter (SJ, RJ, SSC, BUJ) generation source.
Since the 2003 release of the PCIe 1.0 specification, each subsequent generation has doubled the bandwidth of the previous generation. Currently, PCIe 4.0 specification at 16 Gbps/lane is supported by the PCI-SIG Compliance Test program.

PCI Express architecture is increasing the speed of internal interfaces in high-speed PCs and storage, as well as becoming a key interface for communications equipment and servers requiring ever wider bandwidth. It is expected to see rapid deployment in markets, such as IoT, AI, and automotive, utilizing emerging technologies.

PCI-SIG hosts quarterly Compliance Workshops to certify PCIe devices. With increasing demand for PCIe equipment and to meet the test demand for increasing device under test (DUT) numbers, PCI-SIG has established a new permanent test environment, which uses equipment from qualified vendors, including the Anritsu Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A.

Anritsu’s Service Infrastructure Solutions Division General Manager Hiroyuki Takahashi commented, “As well as supporting the next-generation PCIe 5.0 standard, Anritsu’s MP1900A series will support the PCIe 6.0 specifications now being planned. By doing so, Anritsu is helping facilitate the spread of PCI Express and contributing to development of the technology.”
