Secure cloud-based monitoring for life sciences.

The life sciences field is showing a growing interest in cloud computing to improve scalability, efficiency, and risk mitigation. To help its customers make the move from on-premises IT infrastructure to the cloud, Vaisala is launching a scalable cloud version of its trusted viewLinc Continuous Monitoring Software.

Their subscription-based SaaS application, viewLinc Cloud, just launched, is the cloud native version of its viewLinc software for Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). It allows organizations operating in life sciences, such as pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies, to monitor, alarm, and report on facility conditions, ensuring full compliance with strict industry regulations.

The viewLinc Cloud offering will be expanded in three phases, eventually becoming a tiered system where customers can select the features that they need. viewLinc Cloud Standard, most suitable for customers operating out of a single facility, will become available in September 2024. The advanced and premium versions will become available later and will add capabilities to serve the most demanding life science applications.

GxP monitoring, superior data security, and simplified scalability.
viewLinc Cloud is specifically designed for validated applications in the GxP space and enables improved scalability and efficiency by removing the need for a heavy, local, and limited IT infrastructure.

“Currently, there is a trend in life sciences where companies are moving their on-premises, resource-intensive IT infrastructure to the cloud or are aiming to do so in the next few years. By choosing a cloud-based system, our customers reduce the need for internal IT resources and can focus on their core business. viewLinc Cloud allows Vaisala to deploy the software on a secure cloud server and manage maintenance activities, including scheduled software updates,” says Steven Bell, Product Manager at Vaisala.

At a facility monitored by viewLinc Cloud Standard, data loggers installed on-site record the temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels, and the encrypted data is then transmitted via Vaisala’s proprietary VaiNet wireless protocol to viewLinc’s database in the cloud. The system’s users, such as laboratory technicians and quality managers, can easily view the data via any standard web browser. If the viewLinc Cloud system detects any deviation from the permitted measurements, it automatically alerts personnel.

“For life science operations, data integrity and system security are not optional – they are a must. viewLinc Cloud was designed with these as the top priority. All data is recorded redundantly and encrypted, including data stored locally in the data logger, in transit to the cloud server and when stored in the secure cloud database. System data cannot be altered, and configuration changes are tracked in the secure audit trail. viewLinc Cloud also provides multi-factor authentication and granular user rights based on roles to provide system controls required by regulations,” explains Bell.

Low torque high band width.

A new benchmark performance standards for optical rotary torque transducers has been set by Sensor Technology, The digital ORT 230/240 series is ideal for applications when the demand is for low torque and/or high bandwidth, providing precise, dynamic measurement of rotary and static torque from 10mNm up to 100Nm and for bandwidths of up to 50kHz.

The ORT 230/240 devices benefit from electronics that deliver significant gains in resolution, frequency response, reduced sensor current consumption and faster digital data throughput.

The high speed capability comes from an inherently low inertia, since the electronics are not fixed to the shaft, while non-contact operation ensures a long and reliable life (backed up by Sensor Technology’s lifetime warranty) with high accuracy. The optical operating principle also ensures excellent noise immunity.

TorqSense ORT 230 series sensors provide fixed voltage or current analogue outputs – one for torque and one for either speed or power. The TorqSense ORT 240 provides two user selectable voltage or current analogue outputs – one for torque and the other for either speed, power or peak torque – plus digital outputs including RS232, CANbus and USB for interfacing with modern instrumentation and laptops. The ORT 240 enables users to connect up to 10 transducers via USB, and transducer configuration software for making changes to transducer variables.

Features of both devices include self-diagnostics to report if the transducer’s torque, speed ratings or calibration date have been exceeded, while inbuilt sensors monitor shaft temperature for better compensation and accuracy. The device also offers a simple ‘sensor status’ output.

Complementing these products is Sensor Technology’s TorqView software, providing an easy-to-use advanced torque monitoring package for Windows PCs to assist with data display and recording. It offers real time chart plotting, and is compatible with both Matlab and Excel. Further, LabVIEW VIs are available for users to design their own process control applications, and DLLs are available for users who wish to write their own custom software.

These sensors are an important extension to the Sensor Technology torque monitoring range, and offer an alternative solution when low torque or bandwidth requirements preclude the use of the TorqSense range.

Optical rotary torque sensors use a pair of gratings attached a short distance apart on a strain-sensitive shaft to modulate a light source. As torque is applied to the shaft, a slight twist results which changes the alignment of the gratings and thus varies the light transmitted through to a detector. The use of this technique results in a transducer which is able to detect torque bi-directionally, and which has a fast mechanical and electrical response, low inertia and complete freedom from brushes or complex electronics.

The absence of brush gear allows high-speed operation with a continuous rating up to 30,000rpm standard. Further increases in rpm are available depending upon shaft size. The torque shaft is of low compliance ½° maximum torsion deflection on the smaller transducers and ¼° maximum on the larger transducers at full-scale deflection. Any full scale torque can be specified within the range 10mNm to 100Nm.

Reducing the power consumption of equipment.

Responding to climate change is an urgent issue, and lowering power consumption further is required in various applications.

Omron Electronic Components Europe has launched the G5Q-HR, the latest addition to the G5Q family of 10A PCB power relays. The new relays can achieve reduced power consumption and heat, and are 45 percent smaller than equivalent 16A relays. For applications which require high inrush current such as lighting controllers, smart plugs, home appliances and power supplies, this can contribute to downsized equipment design, while opening up new printed circuit board configurations.

First launched in 2001, the G5Q series has sold more than 500 million units worldwide. Considered one of the industry’s leading compact power relay products, the G5Q portfolio now boasts a wide range of variants covering many diverse applications, from home appliances to industrial motor loads. In response to customer demand for compact design and improved energy performance for 10A applications, Omron has now expanded its high inrush offering with the addition of the G5Q-HR, which is available in both single stable and latching variants.

As the only device in the G5Q portfolio that meets the TV-8 standard at 10A class, the G5Q-HR compliments the existing high inrush offering, while offering new possibilities for more powerful and compact end product applications. At 20.3 mm (L) x 10.3 mm (W) x 15.8 mm (H), it is Omron’s smallest TV-8 product.

The G5Q-HR is compatible with a wide range of capacitive loads as well as ramp loads of up to AC 120V, Inrush 117A. In accordance with its TV-8 certification, the G5Q-HR has been rigorously tested to last a minimum of 25,000 cycles, ensuring maximum longevity and reliability. The device also meets the UL Electronic Ballast Rating at 3A 277VAC and 5A 277VAC over 6,000 cycles, and meets IEC60669-1 at 3A 250VAC over 5,000 cycles. The G5Q-HR achieves a high inrush current resistance and supports multiple inrush loads. It is compliant with high input load standards exceeding 100A, such as lighting and power supplies.

The latching type (G5Q—U/K-HR) variant achieves extremely low power consumption by maintaining the contact “on” state with only one pulse of current. This reduces coil power consumption by approximately 99.9 percent compared to standard single-side stable relays. As well as reducing the power consumption of the relay itself, this can also help to reduce the amount of heat generated, contributing to greater efficiency and longevity of related components and systems.

Modular assembly for flushing and bleeding applications.

The TESCOMTM AGI BR Series Flushing Ring from Emerson is a a comprehensive packaged solution for flushing and bleeding applications in petroleum refineries, biofuel refineries and petrochemical facilities. By providing a complete, modular valve assembly with a single part number, the AGI BR Series flushing ring streamlines ordering and allows for easy reordering with customer specific test requirements. Both traditional BRS “sandwich” and BRW “wafer” style rings are available, as well as the BR7 “integrated bonnet” design, which includes the bleed/flushing functions in the flange ring itself.

For distillation towers, hydrotreaters and more.

Most flushing ring products are sold as separate components and assembled in the field. This often involves on-site welding and non-destructive examination (NDE) requirements such as pressure testing, Positive Material Identification (PMI), dye-penetrant and radiography. In comparison, the AGI flushing ring includes valve assembly, welding, painting and testing in one comprehensive, compact package.

“Ordering and installing flushing ring products as separate components is overly burdensome and often results in additional costs and long lead times for product delivery,” said Md Wasfi, product marketing manager at Emerson. “What’s more, the entire process must be repeated when reordering. With the new TESCOM AGI flushing ring, customers can order a complete, modular valve assembly under one SKU, simplifying the process as well as reducing on-site installation costs.”

The AGI flushing ring meets piping and instrument class requirements according to the ASME B16.34 standard and is ideal for installation in processes requiring flushing of residue in front of diaphragm seals such as distillation towers, hydrotreaters, coking towers, reactors and separators. The one-piece forged design reduces leak paths and helps minimize emissions compared to conventional products. Turbomachinery controls.

Solution allows customers to bring industrial plants and assets online quickly and cost-effectively using single interface

ABB has signed a joint development agreement with US company Energy Control Technologies (ECT) to co-design and deliver an integrated turbomachinery controls solution which can be configured, operated and maintained within the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS).

    Pic: ECT
The ABB-ECT Integrated Compressor Controls (ICC) with Integrated Control Safety System (ICSS) offers customers a flexible solution that aims to reduce the footprint and complexity of their plant control system and will have the potential to contribute to automation and electrical CAPEX reductions of up to 20 percent for integrated projects, according to ABB estimates.

Turbomachinery, which is widely employed in industries including hydrogen, biofuels, carbon capture and storage, power generation and oil and gas, consumes large amounts of energy. Having integrated controls provides greater visibility to better manage the performance of the equipment and in turn increase energy efficiency, while reducing risk and cost.

The ABB-ECT ICC is achieved by eliminating traditional black box controls from the system architecture and having controls unified within the same 800xA ICSS System. The need for a separate operator workstation, I/O network, servers, networks, switches and other auxiliary systems is removed. This provides faster startup and greater machine protection, safety and stability.

Until now, installing turbomachinery controls has involved multiple systems, often from different suppliers, that need to be interfaced. Now, operators can benefit from one common platform, for both compressor and DCS controls, from which they can monitor the most critical and expensive assets of their plants – turbines, compressors, pumps and generators.

“We are pleased to collaborate with ABB on this innovative solution which will further help customers solve their most complex control issues across many sectors relying on turbomachinery,” said Paul Fisher, President at ECT. “ECT’s superior compressor control algorithms and technology integrated into the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® DCS will allow customers to run their turbomachinery control system in automatic all the time, providing users with increased production, energy efficiency, and machine protection.”

“This collaboration marks a significant development within the integrated turbomachinery control solutions market and we’re excited to already see uptake from some major US customers, with plans to roll out worldwide,” said Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB Energy Industries. “Turbomachinery is essential to industry but ongoing innovation is necessary to enhance energy efficiency. Leveraging ABB’s technology presents an immediate opportunity to achieve our goal of helping customers to reduce energy demand by optimizing industrial processes.”

Under the agreement, ABB is providing the hardware, software and technical support for ECT to develop the turbomachinery solution for the 800xA platform, while ECT is providing the turbomachinery control algorithm and engineering design, among other assets.

    High-definition oscilloscope.

The DLM3000HD series high-definition oscilloscopes, released by Yokogawa Test & Measurememt, is supported by new IS8002CDV Classic Data Viewer (CDV) software. This compact and lightweight multi-channel instrument meets market demand for high-precision, high-speed measurement of complex digital waveforms during inverter/motor development and testing. With a lineup spanning 500 MHz and 350 MHz frequency bandwidth models, the combination of proprietary low-noise detection and high resolution allows technicians to perform studies in minute detail, faster than ever before. The new IS8002CDV software further supports expediency with its rapid response times, swift analysis of measurement data, and advanced algorithms.

The DLM3000HD builds on the existing DLM3000 mixed-signal oscilloscope series launched in 2018. The product stems from requests made by customers for a lightweight, compact oscilloscope with higher precision and rapid start-up speed that supports the ongoing requirement for more energy-efficient and sustainable motors and inverters. Adopting the DLM3000HD to capture highly accurate voltage and current waveforms with high sample rates addresses the capabilities of electric motors and drives to ensure efficiency in transportation sector applications, for example. Another development driver is next-generation power devices deploying silicon-carbide (SiC) technology, which can switch on and off in a few nanoseconds. Oscilloscopes offering bandwidths of 350 MHz or greater are necessary to capture the fast rising and falling edges of the transient (high-intensity voltage spike during switching). Thanks to its multi-channel measurement, wide bandwidth capabilities and vastly improved vertical axis resolution compared with the existing-generation oscilloscope, the DLM3000HD series steps up to the challenge of performing high-precision parameter measurements, statistical analysis, and real-time mathematical functions.

In comparison with the existing DLM3000, resolution some 16 times greater (12 bit) in the vertical axis captures waveform overshoot and ringing for more accurate observation of tiny changes in high-speed signals.

A long 1 Gpoint memory (double the 0.5 Gpoint memory of the DLM3000) supports the development and evaluation of next-generation inverter devices by recording multiple channels simultaneously, greatly increasing work efficiency. Engineers can make accurate observations of subtle changes in measurement target signals over a long period of time (even at high sample rates up to 2.5 GS/s), confirm signal waveforms, and detect signals causing unexpected anomalies.

Another unique feature of the DLM3000HD series is the pioneering auto set-up function for in-vehicle serial bus development and evaluation, a capability that is also possible during post data acquisition analysis. This time-saving function, which automatically configures the optimal bit rate and threshold level, accelerates the delivery of secure, reliable measurement results in the automotive industry.

Users can take advantage of 4-channel synchronous measurement with the DLM3000HD, while the optional dual-unit synchronous measurement (DLMsync) function facilitates a unified system of 8 channels at the touch of a button via the connection of two units. In addition, the DLM3000HD supports time synchronization with power analyzers and other waveform measuring devices, providing time-correlated measurements.

High noise immunity allows operation even in the harsh environmental conditions often prevalent in development and testing areas, meaning the touch panel is far less likely to malfunction. It is possible to disable the touch panel and use only the buttons if absolutely necessary.

With its updated UI, IS8002CDV software offers easy remote control without the need for any programming. There is no learning curve thanks to emulation of the instrument on the PC, allowing operation as normal. The offline analysis of files also allows engineers and researchers to use the instrument for other measurement tasks, increasing its utilization.

     Major Target Markets & Applications.

  • Electronics in transportation sectors such as automotive and rail, including electric and autonomous vehicles
  • Power/energy sectors such as renewable energy, smart cities/homes, and data centers
  • Design and assessment of in-vehicle serial bus/network protocols, including CAN, CAN FD, and other in-vehicle standards
  • Development and analysis of silicon-carbide (SiC)/gallium nitride (GaN) inverters, EV chargers, UPS (uninterruptable power supplies), and DC-DC converters
  • Development of ECUs (electronic control units) and embedded mechatronic devices

Gas density sensor integrates with IIoT systems

The new model GD-20-W gas density sensor from WIKA supports the digitalisation of gas-insulated switchgear. The wireless device with integrated battery and radio module allows for easy integration into IIoT environments.

The sensor communicates the values measured for gas density, temperature and pressure via the LoRaWAN® network protocol. The device also features an alarm function for the three parameters as well as for the battery status that signals, independent of the preset transmission cycle, that a limit value has been reached.

As a compact wireless device, the model GD-20-W is particularly suitable for retrofitting existing installations operated with SF6 gas or alternative insulating gases. The installation and maintenance effort is low. The battery life is over ten years, depending on the measuring and transmission rate.

The sensor calculates gas density from the pressure and temperature values. It measures the pressure at 20 °C with an accuracy of ± 0.2 percent. The device monitors gas density continuously and thus allows demand-driven asset maintenance.

    Hardware-enforced remote access.

A game changer for secure remote access for CNI.

Software-based remote access — VPNs, 2FA, firewalls, jump hosts, and more all have vulnerabilities and potential zero-days that are exploited routinely by sophisticated threat actors. In a recent webinar, Waterfall Security looked at problems with and attacks that breach conventional “secure” remote access, and they introduce Waterfall’s HERA — Hardware-Enforced Remote Access. With a layer of hardware-enforced protection, in addition to layers of software protection, this represents a material improvement in the security of remote access systems for OT networks, even at unattended sites. With strong client protections, TPM support, session recording, moderated access, moderated sessions, zero trust controls, and many other powerful features, HERA opens up a new era for protected remote access to critical networks.

This webinar looks at solutions that are enforced by dedicated hardware, and what benefits such solutions offer over comparable software-only solutions. Viewers can learn about problems with “secure” remote access and a new, powerful capability for safer remote access to OT systems.

In this webinar, Andrew Ginter and guest speakers Greg Hale, Founder of ISSSource and esteemed former Editor of ISA's InTech, and Jim McGlone, CTO at Automation, Strategy & Performance and co-author of the highly-regarded Security PHA Review, take us through:

    • What attacks have been breaching 2FA, VPNs and other conventional “secure” remote access solutions? What attacks have been breaching 2FA, VPNs and other conventional “secure” remote access solutions? What attacks have been breaching 2FA, VPNs and other conventional “secure” remote access solutions?
    • How are these attacks and risks neutralized by hardware enforcement?
    • How can HERA contribute to strong OT network segmentation and physical segmentation requirements?
    • And examples of how Hardware Enforced Remote Access would be used day-to-day in an industrial setting.

    Connectors for North America.

Cliff Electronics have now extended their SLIMS FeedThrough Connector series to meet the requirements of the market in North America. The introduction of imperial 4-40¼ inch full thread cap screw mounting option will increase acceptance in the USA where M3 threaded connectors are not commonly used. Their DualSLIMS range allows customers to choose between mounting the connector adapters from the front of the panel which permits simple and fast changing of connectors in the field, or the rear which brings a lower profile flush appearance to the connectors when rack mounted or side by side.

John Hall, Managing Director of Cliff Electronics, says "Many of our major customers design and manufacture in North America and offering a 4-40 imperial mounting thread option will simplify design-in of our DualSLIM products and increase our sales of this great product family".

DualSLIM connectors offer panel builders and system integrators the ability to mount up to 20 connectors in a 1U, 19” rack panel. At just 19mm wide the SLIMS range offers a more compact alternative to Cliff’s very popular 26mm wide XLR form factor FeedThrough product range. Just 16 of the existing XLR design, can be mounted in a 19” rack panel.

The DualSLIM FeedThrough connector range is available in a plastic frame with a plain or countersunk Ø2.5mm or Ø3.2mm fixing hole. A metal frame version is also available finished in nickel or black with Ø3.2mm plain or countersunk fixing holes or M3, #440 thread. Panel cut out dimensions are 17.15mm (0.675in) x 22.86mm (0.9in) with mounting hole centres of 29mm.

    The DualSLIM connector range has 14 different versions including HDMI, USB3 A-A, USB3 B-A, USB2 B-A, USB2 A-A, USB2 A-B, USB-C F-M, Cat5e, Cat5e Shielded, Cat6, Cat6 Shielded, Cat3, Cat6A Shielded and blank plate. With a total number of 11 variants of each type, the total number of possible variants is 252.

With its high panel density and low profile if rear mounted the Cliff Electronics DualSLIM may be used in audio, broadcast, AV and communications installations, medical, education and research, industrial control and space. DualSLIM can also be designed in alongside 1U rack mounted NUC computers and mini-PCs, such as Raspberry Pi, for projects of every scale; from custom-tuned gaming machines to industrial applications and are ideal for space constrained embedded or IoT systems, digital signage, media production and video conferencing applications.

SPE decisive in Industrie 4.0 innovations.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is driving connectivity and is supporting Industry 4.0 innovations by connecting machines, devices and systems in the manufacturing and other business sectors. Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) now plays a decisive role in this context.

SPE enables both the transmission of data and the power supply (PoDL) via a single pair of wires. This significantly reduces the complexity of the network architecture and makes integration simpler and clearer. This simplicity is particularly important in industrial environments where hundreds or even thousands of sensors and actuators need to communicate seamlessly and reliably. The technology is also convincing when compared to conventional data rates for the operation of mobile applications such as those deployed in the automotive industry or agricultural technology.

Single Pair Ethernet offers the following advantages:

    • Lean and clear network architecture
    • High flexibility and scalability
    • Better responsiveness through high convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT)
    • Weight savings for more efficient mobility
    • Higher range with sufficient data transmission rate

ODU connection solutions for SPE meet the MultiGigabitBase-T1L standard according to IEEE 802.3ch and deliver a reliable transmission rate of 10 GBit/s for a maximum length of 15 meters with a shielded cable.

If the required cable length is increased up to 40 meters, then the ODU connection solution provides a transmission rate of up to 1 Gbit/s (1000Base-T1) and thereby meets the requirements of the IEEE 802.3bp standard. ODU also offers high-quality standard cable assemblies including connectors in accordance with IEC 63171-2.

Lower transmission rates such as 100Base-T1 or 10Base-T1L for the handling of simpler protocols over longer distances are also possible, for example to drive forward process or factory automation.

A strong armour for the nervous system.
In applications that are subject to regular maintenance or require high-frequency tool replacement, conventional connection interfaces quickly reach their limit as they are only suitable for a few mating cycles. ODU MINI-SNAP® SPE connectors can be deployed in tough environments and thereby withstand up to 5,000 mating cycles while offering an extremely small sized footprint. Modular connectors from the ODU-MAC® series, on the other hand, not only offer an extremely long service life with at least 10,000 mating cycles, but also the option of integrating SPE in a modular connector as a hybrid solution.

ODU also offers SPE connection solutions that are particularly resistant. They withstand extreme temperatures, shocks and vibrations as well as contamination from moisture and dust.

Customers benefit from the following advantages thanks to the portfolio variants:

    • No qualification costs, as cable assemblies are already tested and qualified.
    • Final product can be developed without samples using simulation results.
    • ODU provides simulation results so that customers can plan and check the overall system in advance.
    • Changes at short notice can be implemented cost-effectively and without great expenditure of time.
    • Within the channel limits, the cable assemblies can be purchased individually in any total length.
    • Standard assemblies are available with short delivery times thanks to factory stocking of individual components.

This results in short delivery times and low development costs. A reliable transmission system with many advantages over conventional data transmission technology. Thanks to connectors from ODU, SPE cable assemblies from ODU deliver the best signal integrity even in adverse environments and impress with their excellent service life.
