Used machinery and AI!

The future of the used machinery market lies in the combination of human expertise and the analytical precision of artificial intelligence.

How much is my used machine worth?
When is the perfect time to sell?
AI can help sellers with such questions.
Pic © Surplex.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in many industries. This advanced technology is not only valued for its ability to analyse complex data and make decisions - it also offers the potential to optimise processes and automate routine tasks. The used machinery trade in particular shows how AI opens up new opportunities and can revolutionise existing processes.

From an idea to a universal tool.
The origins of artificial intelligence date back to the 1950s, when scientists began to explore the idea of thinking and learning machines. Today, AI includes a wide range of advanced technologies such as machine learning, neural networks and autonomous systems that can make decisions on their own. These techniques have enabled the use of AI in a wide range of applications, from optimising complex production lines to improving customer interaction and supporting diagnosis in medicine. The advantage of AI systems lies in its ability to learn from large amounts of data and recognise patterns, making it an indispensable analysis and forecasting tool. In many industries, AI is therefore not only used to increase efficiency, but also to develop new business models and transform existing markets.

Five trends in the used machinery market.
The used machinery market is also beginning to recognise and use the benefits of artificial intelligence. The following five AI trends are emerging that could have a significant impact on the trade:

  1. Pricing and value assessment: AI models use extensive data analyses to determine the current market value of used machines and provide realistic price recommendations. For example, age, manufacturer, machine type and maintenance periods are compared.
  2. Maintenance prediction: By analysing operating data, AI systems can predict when maintenance work is required. This minimises downtime and maximises the service life of the machines.
  3. Demand forecasting: AI can analyse sales trends and past transaction data to predict future fluctuations in demand and determine the optimal time to sell.
  4. Supply chain optimisation: AI can anticipate supply chain disruptions and plan more efficient transport routes, resulting in faster delivery times.
  5. Adaptation and retooling through AI: AI can analyse existing production processes and show where used machines can be used effectively to modernise, expand areas of application or increase efficiency. By analysing an AI, possibilities for modernising and adapting used machines can be identified in order to expand their areas of application and increase efficiency.
AI not the complete answer.
Although AI offers support in many areas and enables significant efficiency gains, it cannot replace the personal and expert service of specialised used machinery dealers like Surplex. With its multilingual website and worldwide network of buyers, Surplex offers an efficient platform that greatly simplifies the process of selling used machinery. From the professional evaluation to the complete handling of each transaction, Surplex ensures a smooth and professional process. Wideband-high-output linear amplifier.

The AH15199B 140 Gbaud Wideband/High-Output (2 Vpp) Linear Amplifier*1, developed by Anritsu to evaluate optical transmissions devices in the generation of beyond 1 Tera is now on the market.

 Technical Terms

*1 Linear Amplifier: Amplifies input signal at fixed ratio
*2 PAM4: Abbreviation for Pulse Amplitude Modulation used to increase transmission capacity by amplitude modulation using four voltage levels
*3 Gain: Parameter indicating how many times input frequency sinusoidal amplitude multiplied at output; plotted as frequency on logarithmic x-axis and gain in dB relative units on y-axis
*4 Jitter: Parameter indicating quality of digital signal as timing fluctuation; larger jitter causes errors in acquiring digital signal values
*5 DSP: Abbreviation for Digital Signal Processor; specialized microprocessor for processing digital signals and generally used in real-time computing *6 Digital Coherent Data transmission method using light phase and polarization to transmit high-capacity signals over long distances due to low signal degradation
*7 IM-DD: Abbreviation for Intensity Modulation-Direct Detection (IM-DD); data transmitting/receiving system using changes in light intensity
This new linear amplifier features a wideband frequency response of 200 kHz to 135 GHz at a –6 dB bandwidth and can amplify 140 Gbaud PAM4*2 signals to 2.0 Vpp. The high-gain*3 amplification of +15.5 dB and low jitter*4 fluctuation of 300 fs from the actual signal timing support amplification of even high-quality input signals attenuated during transmission.

Furthermore, the AH15199B can amplify 140 Gbaud PAM4 signals from various signal sources, such as DSP*5, and can directly drive modulators and other devices requiring high amplitude. Therefore, it is a suitable driver for evaluating optical modulators for 800GbE and 1.6TbE digital coherent*6 system, now the focus of attention as next-generation transmission systems, as well as for IM-DD*7 systems used widely in optical communications.

This wideband linear amplifier supports the growth and smooth operation of high-speed networks.

Development Background.
Mobile data traffic is increasing with the growth of AI, machine learning, and other services, but further increases in communication speeds for servers and network devices are a major challenge.

The next-generation Ethernet standard IEEE802.3 supporting high-speed networks will use digital coherent methods, such as 800GBASE-LR1 (for 10 km), 800GBASE-ER1-20 (for 20 km), and 800GBASE-ER1 (for 40 km), as well as the IM-DD method. The OIF (Optical Internetworking Forum) is studying specifications for optical transmission technologies, such as 800ZR, 1600ZR, as well as coherent technology to support increased optical network capacity and accelerate growth of “beyond 1 Terahertz” systems.

On the other hand, higher transmission speeds suffer larger signal attenuation, so a high-power linear driver is needed to amplify PAM signals faithfully and drive modulators directly.

The AH15199B high-power linear amplifier supports evaluation of 2.0 Vpp signals at 140 Gbaud PAM4 for high-speed, high-output data transmissions at a low maximum power consumption of 1.5 W. A 140 Gbaud data speed equals 140 billion signal changes per second.

The standard, small, dedicated power supply reduces the risk of damage from incorrect handling.

Automating the impossible anywhere!

"Industrial automation’s most versatile compensation module to the world."

At the Bosch Rexroth Customer and Innovation Center in Ulm (D), they develop innovative solutions for the future of automation, such as the Smart Flex Effector, a compensation module aiming to revolutionise the industry.

Automate the impossible.
David Lehmann, System Architect at Bosch Rexroth, explains what a compensation module is and what makes the Smart Flex Effector unique:

David Lehmann
“When you think about a robot in the factory, you usually think of a six-axis robot assembling parts or building a car, or something like that. The robots have some kind of tool at the tip, like a gripper. The compensation module is the part that goes between the robot arm and the gripper. The Smart Flex Effector stands out due to its ability to provide compliance (flexibility in response to forces) in six degrees of freedom (movement in three-dimensional space).

We can measure the deflection (change in position) of the tool with high precision with an integrated sensor system. This allows us to perform complex tasks, such as precise assembly operations, that usually only humans can do. Our slogan, ‘Automate the impossible’, sums it up nicely. Our goal with this product is to enable robots to perform new tasks that they are traditionally not good at, thereby increasing efficiency and productivity.”

Connectivity challenges.
To enable the robots to perform these new tasks, the Smart Flex Effector needs to exchange position measurement data with the robot controllers, including information about the deflection of the tool and control signals for the module's locked and unlocked states.

However, connecting the Smart Flex Effector to robot controllers was challenging, as David explains. “Our product was available, but we had difficulties installing it at our customer’s sites. When we talked to our customers, the feedback was often the same: 'You have this serial interface, but I don't want to spend two weeks or more trying to connect it with my robot controller. I do not have the time or the resources to do that.'”

Simplifying connectivity with Anybus protocol converters To solve these connectivity challenges, Bosch Rexroth turned to HMS Networks who provided the Anybus Communicator Common Ethernet, a ready-made protocol converter capable of connecting serial devices to EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP or PROFINET controllers.

A key benefit of the Anybus Communicator Common Ethernet was that the same unit can connect to all the major Ethernet protocols, as David describes “This Anybus protocol converter was the ideal solution for us because we can reconfigure it with a firmware update and with just one unit, we are able to provide the connection to the different protocols.”

The Anybus Communicator’s intuitive user interface also won some new fans. “The interface is really nice. Before selling it to our customers, we tested it for ourselves in our lab where application engineers completed feasibility studies, for example. They all said that it was easy and straightforward to complete the required configurations via the web interface, which was important to us as we have customers that are not experts in automation and robotics.”

The fact that the Anybus Communicator could be installed via a web browser was a further plus point. “Both we at Bosch and our customers prefer not to install third-party configuration software. It adds security risks and complexity – just getting the required admin rights often delays installations.”

The Smart Flex Effector and Anybus Communicator have worked so well together that Bosch Rexroth includes the Anybus Communicator as part of a complete solution. “We decided to create an order number for the Anybus convertor, so that customers could buy it directly from us. So, we sell both devices together as a complete solution.”

With the addition of the Anybus Communicator, Bosch Rexroth can easily connect to all the major Industrial Ethernet protocols, and as a result have significantly expanded its market. "Now we really can address more or less the whole market”, David concludes. “We can cover everything; we haven't found a robot with a fieldbus connection that is not supported by this Anybus convertor yet."

Board-level camera system ensures great scope for customisation.

Be uncompromisingly happy instead of making compromises.

Sometimes customer requirements for industrial cameras are so particular that a customised development is desirable. This often only makes sense for larger quantities. For this reason, IDS has developed the uEye ACP series: its modular design principle allows for a vast range of camera variants. The online configurator helps to put together unusual models that are available from stock. True to the philosophy: be uncompromisingly happy instead of making compromises.

IDS Imaging Development Systems has developed all essential camera components for the uEye ACP series – such as sensor boards, connectors and lens holders – as standard modules that can be freely combined. The range includes USB3 and GigE Vision interfaces, connector boards with various connector options, flex cables and a wide range of image sensors from 0.5 to 20 MP.

Customised board-level cameras are available off the shelf in quantities as low as one, without the usual development cycles of individual projects. Furthermore, customers have the option of receiving the camera fully assembled or as individual components. As is customary for IDS, careful testing before shipment and quality "Made in Germany" are a matter of course in both cases.

In addition to the uEye ACP product line, the industrial camera manufacturer also takes on customised development projects. On request, an experienced team carries out everything that is technically possible, from individual design to adaptations of the housing, board electronics and connector configuration, as well as software adaptations.

Electric actuators.

In addition to resistance against environmental hazards such as sunlight UV, they now offer more electronic control options.

Advanced controllability options have been added to Thomson Industries' Electrak® LL line of long-life electric linear actuators. In addition to the 600 km of maintenance-free life and 100% duty cycle performance inherent to all the Electrak LL models, machine designers can now get absolute position feedback, CAN bus integration, reduced current flow and higher speeds.

“OEM designers using our long-life actuators in applications that might otherwise require hydraulic or pneumatic systems can now also get more control over the position, load and speed. Our new configuration options enable them to move actuators into position more smoothly, know instantly where they are and use that data in motion profiles,” said Travis Gilmer, Product Manager – Linear Actuators at Thomson.

Key to the Electrak LL’s long-life architecture is a brushless motor, a high-load ball screw assembly, a brake solution that does not wear, and IP69K (static) and IP66 (dynamic) compliant sealing. This combination enables duty cycles of up to 100 percent, up to 600 km of travel life, and up to one million cycles – more than ten times that of electromechanical actuators without these features. The new configuration options for the Electrak LL augment its industry leading durability with advanced control, integration, higher voltage and higher speed options.

Instead of calculating position from sensors and encoders, users of Electrak LL actuators can get direct absolute position information by programming its embedded microprocessor to count mechanical turns within the gearbox. This enables an instantaneous, exact reading of position for the use of advanced control logic. A design engineer might, for example, use it to synchronize movements of multiple cylinders to defined positions at designated speeds

Another advantage of absolute position feedback is that it will be calibrated during assembly and does not need to be recalibrated. This improves efficiency in applications such as railway and agricultural controls where actuators are usually shut down for extended periods of time when the vehicles are not in use. If the position is not absolute, the actuator will need recalibration on restart. Also, the Electrak LL absolute position measurement does not require mechanical contact, which minimizes wear to the system.

Advanced control sequences need a way to share exchange instructions and data, and Thomson long-life actuators provide this as well. Electrak LL users can build applications around either CANopen® or SAE J1939 communications. This provides maximum flexibility to integrate actuators with other components or productivity and business applications.

High-duty-cycle applications, such as mobile robots, are usually battery powered as low current draw can be an advantage. Electrak LL users can now meet application power requirements by configuring their systems with a 48 V power supply. In comparison to the 24 V version, the 48 V will reduce resistive power losses, which enables thinner, less expensive wiring.

A 2 kN (450 lbs) load option to the Electrak LL has also been added. This optimizes the actuator to handle higher speeds with longer service life.

Applications.
The new configuration options of the Electrak LL are for those who want both higher duty cycles and maximum control over their applications, such as the following:

  • Smart railway pantographs and couplers
  • Automated guided vehicles (AGVs)
  • Material handling logistics trains
  • Automated farming robots
  • Movable steps and access lifts for trains and busses
  • Gravel bins and hatches
