Larger 10.4" displays now come as a standard on the Sinumerik 828D Basic, replacing the 8.4" version. With its panel processing unit (PPU) 290, Siemens is also offering both the Sinumerik 828D and the Sinumerik 828D Advanced with a 15.6" display equipped with capacitive touch technology for the first time. The touch display can be operated intuitively with single touch gestures.
The full QWERTY keyboard, which is integrated into the operator panel underneath the screen, makes it possible to quickly input data, for example when programming CNC tasks. The wider screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1366 x 678 pixels provides more space for detailed images. The 15.6" display on the Sinumerik 828D Advanced is ideal for viewing two channels, for example during turning and grinding operations.
The PPU 290's rugged magnesium die-cast operator panel with a scratch-proof glass surface provides an IP65 degree of protection. The display works even in harsh environments – such as when in contact with dust, shavings or lubricants – and can be operated with gloves. An RJ45 Ethernet port and a USB port are located on the panel front for quick, easy networking and connecting external storage devices. A ranging sensor automatically darkens the display when it is not in use. As is customary in the Sinumerik 828 controls, the panel is designed without a fan or hard disk, making it maintenance free. Meanwhile, NV-RAM technology allows emergency backups to be made without the need for a battery. Version 4.7 Service Pack 2 of Sinumerik Operate is required to use the new displays.
