Cybersecurity conformance accreditation.

Full accreditation to certify products to ISA/IEC 62443 cybersecurity conformance.

The International Society of Automation (ISA) has announced that UL Solutions has received full accreditation from the International Accreditation Service (IAS) and ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) to serve as an ISO/IEC 17065 accredited certification body for ISASecure®.

The ISASecure certification program certifies conformance to the ISA/IEC 62443 series of internationally adopted industrial security standards. UL Solutions is now accepting product submittals for ISASecure certification. UL Solutions contact details can be found here on the ISASecure website

ISASecure assesses automation and control products and systems to ensure they are robust against network attacks, free from known vulnerabilities and meet the security capabilities defined in the ISA/IEC 62443 standards. All ISASecure certifications are conducted by globally recognized ISO/IEC 17065 accredited certification bodies.

I/O modules for hazardous areas.

Acromag’s new BusWorks® NT series remote I/O modules are now UL Listed for Class 1 Division 2 Groups A, B, C, D hazardous locations with volatile substances in the United States and Canada. This certification permits the use of the BusWorks NT series remote I/O modules in environments with flammable liquids, gases, or vapors. The Class I Div 2 certification is often required for electronics deployed in chemical, oil, gas, mining, and other manufacturing facilities. 

With the higher safety rating, the Ethernet modules can be installed closer to sensors and actuators to reduce installation costs for monitoring and control of automated machinery. The Ethernet modules have also passed testing for the European ATEX and IECEx Zone 2 safety certification that is widely accepted in many countries globally for explosive atmospheres.

“The new NT Series Ethernet I/O modules are now internationally certified for safe use in areas that may contain volatile substances,” states Robert Greenfield, Acromag’s Business Development Manager.

NTE Ethernet I/O models have dual RJ45 ports and a webserver with Modbus TCP/IP and Ethernet/IP communication to monitor or control the internal I/O channels. An integrated DIN rail bus allows connections of up to three NTX expansion I/O modules. Each I/O module adds up to 16 input or output signals allowing a mix of voltage, current, temperature, TTL, and relay control signals networked on one IP address. The space-saving design requires only 25mm of DIN rail per module. Ethernet I/O modules distribute 9-32V DC power along the DIN rail bus to expansion modules. Hazardous location approvals, high noise immunity, and -40 to 70°C operation make this ideal for use in harsh environments.

The NT2000 Series offers a broad variety of I/O signal processing options. Nine I/O configurations are available as either NTE Ethernet I/O or NTX expansion I/O models. Analog I/O models feature eight differential or sixteen single-ended inputs for monitoring current or voltage signals. Discrete I/O models provide 16 tandem input/output channels with either active high/low input and sinking/sourcing output. A six-channel mechanical relay output model is also available. For temperature monitoring, a thermocouple input model supports many sensor types and also millivolt ranges. More models will release over the coming months for additional I/O functions.

Profinet communication is planned for release soon. Each module will support all three protocols which are selectable using any web browser to configure the network settings and I/O operation. The modules typically function as a network slave, but also offer Acromag’s i2o® peer-to-peer communication technology to transfer data between modules directly without a host or master in between. Multicast capability is included.

Footswitch suitable for medical use.

Herga Technology's Modular Base System has successfully gained UL- and IEC- 60601-1 medical product approval. In combination with Herga’s best-in-class medically approved electrical and Bluetooth® footswitches and puckswitches, this building-block platform now provides a globally unique solution for multipedal medical equipment footswitch selection and purchase. Renamed for medical switching tasks as the Medical Footswitch Design Platform, OEMs can be assured their complete multipedal switching module has medical approval on delivery - saving cost by reducing product design effort, simplifying their medical approval process and speeding time-to-market.

The Medical Footswitch Design Platform is an attractive and ergonomic solution for medical equipment manufacturers offering wide flexibility for application-specific switching. OEMs can easily accommodate their specific switching requirements for a single machine or range of machines with varying functionality through seamless range expansion. The base system consists of moulded thermoplastic single and double plinths that mechanically lock with joining spacers to provide electrical connections for 1-, 2-, 3- 4-, or 5- plinth configurations. Each single plinth can accommodate a single footswitch as well as one or two puckswitches.

Complementing the Medical Footswitch Design Platform, Herga’s IEC 60601/UL 60601 medically approved range of footswitches include the well proven 6226 series that can be selected with environmental protection options EN60529 IPX7 or IPX8 on request. Whilst the electrical ratings for each complete base unit are determined by the application, the typical electrical switching range for each footswitch is up to 3 A at 24V AC/DC with momentary function for SPST, N/O or SPDT. Medically approved 6241 puckswitches, 6244 haptic puckswitches and Otto switches can also be included with typical ratings of 0.1 A at 24V DC for SPDT/DPDT switching.

All of the electrical switching functions for the Medical Footswitch Design Platform are typically output via a single cable for straightforward machine connection, with flying leads and stripped cable cores or with a preferred connector as required, or alternatively via our closed network Bluetooth connection. A wide range of modular accessories may be included such as tubular steel carrying handles, open guards or roll bars. For improved operational safety, each footswitch may also be separated with a raised divider built into the joining spacer. Steel base plates are available for added durability. The switch components can be suppled in a range of standard colours and customer logos included. Additional options include LEDs, screen printing and USB connection. Fully customised base systems are available in OEM quantities.

The Modular Base System is also suitable for industrial and commercial machinery switching tasks where medical approval is not essential. Herga has developed a comprehensive range of standard variants that use the new modular base system to combine commonly specified 6226 series footswitches and single 6241 puckswitches. With a series of detailed datasheets including reference dimensions and ordering information available from the Herga website, this range covers straightforward selection in eight combinations that span a single footswitch to a multiple switch combination including 4x footswitch plus 4x puckswitches switch configuration. This range can of course include Herga’s medically approved foot and puckswitches switches allowing a fully medically approved product on-delivery.

Standards for vibration & temperature.

AVT Reliability® has strengthened its position in the US and Canadian asset management market after achieving the UL 61010 US and C safety standard for its tri-axial fixed vibration and temperature sensor, Machine Sentry® MSF-1.

The company opened its first US subsidiary in Rockford, Tennessee in January this year to service and support an increased demand from clients. It has also established a local distribution network and support partners in the US and Canada for its Machine Sentry® product range.

The UL 61010 is the US & Canada equivalent of the European CE product safety standard and covers electrical products for use in non-hazardous locations.

Irish university scholorships named after semiconductor pioneer.

The University of Limerick (UL) and Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) have announced two scholarship programs in honour of Peter Real, ADI’s late chief technology officer (CTO) and UL alumnus. The scholarships will be awarded to students in the United States who are pursuing a PhD and undergraduate degrees at the University of Limerick.

The Peter Real Analog Devices Bernal Fulbright PhD Scholarship will be awarded in partnership with the Bernal Institute at UL and the Fulbright Commission. The scholarship will fund post-graduate PhD research with a focus on scientific, biomedical or ecological disciplines and enable a US citizen to complete a fully funded PhD at UL over a period of four years.

“I am delighted to see that the multinational semiconductor company Analog Devices has decided to further invest in our strong partnership under the prestigious Fulbright scheme, targeting cleantech and health research that is critical for Ireland’s economic recovery,” said Luuk van der Wielen, Director of the Bernal Institute.


The Peter Real Analog Devices Scholarship for undergraduate students, which will award €5,000 each to three students, are merit-based and students who are accepted to UL with top academic grades will be considered. The funds are designed to help support cost-of-living expenses, including room and board. Scholarship funds will be awarded to one student in each of the following categories:

1. A student studying science or engineering
2. A graduate of a Boston, Mass.- area high school in honour of ADI’s global headquarters location
3. A student pursuing a general UL undergraduate degree

“These scholarships will truly benefit the next generation of students who wish to study at UL and broaden their cultural horizons,” said Josephine Page, Director of International Education, UL.

Harvey Duthie, UL Foundation’s CEO said, “We thank Analog Devices for its generous support. Through these scholarships, we look forward to welcoming many more American students to UL.”

The scholarship program’s namesake, Peter Real, received a bachelor’s degree in Electronic Systems from the University of Limerick (formerly the National Institute for Higher Education) in 1981. Mr. Real enjoyed a successful engineering career including serving as CTO of ADI where he led and defined the company’s technological vision. He held strong ties to both the United States and Ireland, having worked at ADI in both countries. In 2019, Mr. Real was posthumously recognized at the University of Limerick’s Annual Alumni awards for his outstanding contributions to science and technology.

“Peter was an engineering industry giant, holding nine patents and having deep experience across different engineering roles, mentoring many future engineering and business leaders. Throughout his career, Peter nurtured technology development at UL as well as in the United States and advised many research bodies across the globe,” said Martin Cotter, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Digital Marketing at Analog Devices and a close colleague of Mr. Real’s for many years. “When we thought about how to recognize Peter’s contribution to our company and to the industry, it was a natural decision to fund scholarships that represented his personal and professional relationships with the United States, Ireland and the University of Limerick.”

Switches ignition protection certified.

ZF Friedrichshafen AG was approached by some of its global customers to gain the new UL certificate for NCKL2/8 approval to bring their products in line with new standards for ignition-protected components.

In the last few years new refrigerants have been developed which are more environmentally friendly. Despite this huge advancement, there is the possibility that they can become flammable in certain conditions. These new refrigerants are increasingly integrated within domestic white goods including refrigerators, ice machines, heat pumps and air conditioning units. Therefore, components such as the ZF D4 switches already used in those products must now to be ignition protected.

The company has confirmed tha approval has been received for the UL certificate for their NCKL2/8 applying to the D4 range of versatile miniature snap switches.

UL-Listed control panels for Alaska.

aeSolutions has obtained NNNY and NRBX UL listings certifying industrial control panels for use in hazardous locations and shipped their first NNNY listed Burner Management System (BMS) panels to an oil and gas customer in Prudhoe Bay, (AK, USA).

UL certifies that equipment meets certain safety standards. aeSolutions pursued the extensive testing and documentation required to obtain the following additional UL listings:

  • NNNY - UL listing for industrial control panels and assemblies for use in hazardous (classified) locations - Explosion proof (UL1203), Purged and Pressurized Enclosures (NFPA 496), and Nonincendive (ANSI/ISA 12.12.01).
  • NRBX (698a) - UL listing for industrial control panels relating to hazardous (classified) locations - Intrinsically safe barriers for circuits located in classified areas (will not cause an ignition source)

All aeSolutions industrial control panels are built to UL 508a standards. With the recently acquired NNNY and NRBX listings, aeSolutions’ equipment is now also certified for use in hazardous locations.

When panels are designed and installed for classified locations, safety requirements go beyond the normal standards for industrial control panels. Additional listings are required by applicable codes and per the authority having jurisdiction. With these additional listings in place, aeSolutions will be able to efficiently design and install industrial control systems that meet these classified location requirements, and provide safety controls customers need to protect their people; their facilities and processes; and the environment.

Level switch listed for safety

The proven Baumer CleverLevel LBFS/LFFS level switch has now been listed by the American Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). Testing of the CleverLevel included numerous safety-related aspects in accordance with UL standards and requirements. As a further quality feature, the renowned and globally accepted UL listing facilitates use of the level switch in important international markets, especially in the U.S.

With the CleverLevel LBFS/LFFS series Baumer offers a level switch that, as a true all-rounder, provides numerous advantages. The CleverLevel can be used for practically all media, such as liquids, granulates and even electrostatic media. And it is also unaffected by adhesive substances or foams that could cause other technologies to have switching errors.

The CleverLevel can reliably detect fill levels in tanks or pipes with precision and a response time of less than 100 ms, thereby, for example, preventing pumps from running dry. It is also capable of distinguishing between different media, such as water and oil.

North American indication!

A new series of UL certified LED panel indicators from Marl are designed specifically to address the needs of new and existing products for, and customers in the US and Canadian markets.

Marl’s design team based the 690 Series on a 9.6mm mounting hole, adapted with a US thread form and low profile lens to increase resistance to accidental or deliberate vandalism, whilst enhancing the optical performance for viewing in a range of ambient light conditions. The specially designed electronic circuit accepts a universal input ranging between 8 to 48 volts AC/DC, providing a global platform for all applications.

With an IP67 rating, the 690 Series panel indicator is fully protected against ingress from dust and liquid making it ideal for a wide range of outdoor control and monitoring applications which demand the reassurance of UL certification. The smoked lens assembly gives a good on/off contrast ratio for sunlight readable applications, and internal potting means they can withstand high vibration applications. They are designed for new and retrofit applications and will fit in existing round mounting holes or a D Mounting Hole for anti-rotation.

“We decided to design the 690 Series after being contacted by a company in the US who were experiencing reliability issues with their current panel socket and lamp,” said Adrian Rawlinson, Managing Director at Marl. “Our design team was able to eliminate these issues and create an indicator that provides excellent performance in all weather conditions and is capable of many years reliable service.”

Connector series with tripled voltage transfer capability

Hartings's surface-mount compatible series of DIN 41 612 connectors now has triple the voltage transfer capability of earlier versions.

This performance gain has been achieved through the use of special plastics featuring higher values of CTI (comparative tracking index: a measure of insulation capability defined by Underwriters Laboratories). These new plastics comply with the Group II specification, with a CTI of between 400 and 600, while the standard plastics are classified as Group IIIa or IIIb,
with a CTI of between 100 and 400. Given a creepage distance of 1.2 mm, the voltage between two adjacent contacts can amount to 160 V: considerably higher than the usual 50 V.

The new connectors are available in types C, 2C, 3C, B, 2B, 3B, R, 2R and F. Additional construction types and sizes are available on request.
