Wall-mounting for connectors.

Fully EMC-shielded and highly robust outdoor housings can now be rear-mounted

The metal housings in the Han® EMV and Han® HPR series are now available in versions that enable contact inserts to be mounted from the rear, an option that simplifies the placement of interfaces on switch cabinet walls, increases the installation speed and lowers costs in the long term.

Harting has produced other connector types that feature a rear-fit mounting option. Over the past two years, the Han-Eco® A and B and the Han® B and Han® M series came out with this ‘rear-fit’ installation option. Now, the option is available for the first time for the Han® EMV and Han® HPR series.

Rear-fit mounting means that contact inserts can be installed in the housing from the rear, which is particularly important for installation in cabinets in combination with prefabricated cable assemblies. Assembling both products is further accelerated by using a mounting frame. Alternatively, the modules can be inserted directly into the housing. All Han® series that feature the Rear-Fit option make it easier to install contact inserts and cut installation times.

The ‘Rear-Fit’ housings are also interoperable with earlier versions that cannot be equipped from the rear, which translates into a cost-effective, step-by-step introduction of the new housings into production.

Designing connectors.

Connector can be custom ordered with short delivery times available



For the first time ever, users can now make customised adjustments to the housings of series-produced industrial interfaces by using the Han® Configurator, the Harting online tool for designing connectors. Cable entries can be modified and identifying letterings can be applied to hoods and housings.

Users can use the Han® Configurator’s new feature to design the position and number of cable entries in line with their own requirements. Even lettering applied to the housing surface can be customised. The Configurator ensures that the interface design meets the respective technical requirements and that the components used are compatible with each other.

As soon as the configuration is completed, a digital record of the solution is ready for download and CAD data and dimensional drawings for the individual part are directly accessible. The online tool helps accelerate design both for the user and for Harting, meaning new connectors can be manufactured and delivered faster.

Connector housings.

Harting’s new Han® HP Direct series of connector housings dispenses with the classical bulkhead mounted housing and replaces it with two mounting flanges. As a result, the standard hood forms a seal directly on the switch cabinet wall, leading to beneficial space savings.

Installation requires only that the mounting flanges are screwed to the switch cabinet wall, which can be carried out using the standard panel cutouts of the Han® B housing series. One side of the contact inserts is secured to the mounting flanges and the other side is screwed into the hood.

After mating, the hoods are attached to the mounting flanges via robust screw locking. Incorrect plugging can be prevented by using two coding elements on the side of the mounting flanges as well as on the side where the hood is.

The classic sizes of 6 B, 10 B, 16 B and 24 B are available. All sizes are available with side or top entry in sizes M20, M25, M32 and M40.

The new Han® HP Direct housing system is available in three versions: a standard variant for indoor industrial applications featuring a grey powder surface with classic NBR seal; an EMC variant featuring an electrically conductive surface and seal for applications where a high degree of EMC protection is required; and an outdoor version featuring a black powder surface and UV and ozone-resistant FPM seals.
All variants come with IP protection classes IP66, IP68 and IP69K in the mated state. The hoods are made of corrosion-resistant, die-cast aluminium.

The Han® HP Direct housing series is mainly intended for the machinery, robotics and energy application sectors, but can easily be used in other applications.

Housing components allow larger diameter connectors.

Harting has introduced a new range of housing components which allow the company’s Han® 3A size connectors to be produced with larger diameters, enabling them to be used with cables up to 25% wider. As a result, customers will be able to use contact inserts with higher rated current and bigger cross-sections – such as the Han® Q series.

The new housing components feature a narrow external geometry overall, terminating in the cable holding area. The housings are fully compatible with all the existing contact inserts in the series, and also meet the requirements of protection classes IP65/67.

The new Han® 3A hood is available in a plastic version with a bigger M25 thread, allowing alternative types of mounting including direct mounting on control cabinets.

For the metal versions of the housings, coupling hoods are also available in the M25 option alongside the existing sleeve housings. As with the plastic housings, this allows the use of flying connections in addition to alternative types of mounting – for retrofits, for example. Other versions, such as the EMV electrically conductive unit and the M type for stricter corrosion requirements, are also available.

With the availability of metal or plastic HARTING M25 screwed cable glands, HARTING can now supply the complete range of screw fittings for all customer applications over the cable clamp range from 9 to 18 mm.

Transducer BTL with real-time Ethernet interfaces.

The new transducers in rod and profile housings with an Ethernet interface from Balluff offer multiple advantages for machine manufacturers and operators with respect to startup and machine output. The standardized communication protocols and automatic address assignment simplify integration of the transducer into the controller and the plant network. Because of this, a complex programming process is no longer necessary. This leads to a shortened machine startup time, low implementation costs and reduces fault sources simultaneously.

The 4 diagnostic LEDs on the sensor head can check both the sensor status and the status of the Ethernet connection. This supports easy maintenance and quick service.

The transducer is ideally suited for use in advanced applications (those involving controlled axes, for example) due to synchronous, extremely fast and secure real-time data transmission and the precise, highly dynamic position measurement with 1 µm resolution. This advantage contributes to a higher machine output and improved production quality. The transducers of the BTL7 series can detect and process up to 16 position encoders. Two values can be output for each position encoder: the position and the speed. Because of this, a single measurement can yield up to 32 measured values.

Selectable real-time Ethernet interfaces include Profinet IRT, EtherCAT and Varan. The product portfolio includes a total of four designs: the classic rod housing for installation in the cylinder and three profile versions for flexible mounting on a machine. The profiles are divided into a square 36x36 mm design, an extremely flat profile with an overall height of 21 mm and a round profile 30 mm in diameter.

The transducers with real-time Ethernet interfaces can be used in any setting in which high control dynamics and accuracy are required. This includes areas of material processing, the plastics industry, reshaping technology and the food industry.

Bulkhead-mounted industrial connector housing with self-closing cover.

Harting has added a new bulkhead mounted housing equipped with a hinged self-closing cover to its Han® B family of heavy-duty industrial connectors.

The hinged cover on the new housing automatically closes when the connector is removed, protecting the interior effectively from external influences. A special spring on the bearing pedestal presses the hinged cover against the housing with enough pressure to prevent water spray and dust from entering the interior.

The new housing is locked with the Han-Easy Lock® bracket which combines ease of use with a good sealing effect and low operational force. In an unplugged condition the new bulkhead mounted housing offers IP44 protection, but in the plugged condition, in combination with a suitable Han® B hood, it complies with the IP65 protection class.

The Han® B connector range, with its housings and inserts, covers the entire range of industrial requirements for professional connection technology. Along with the recently introduced Han® Snap Cap mechanism, Harting offers additional options for protecting electrically powered applications against external influences.

The application possibilities of the bulkhead mounted housing with hinged cover include wind turbines and wind energy systems, cranes and switchgear, trains and trams: any areas, in fact, where power connections are exposed to the effects of water spray and other adverse effects.

In all these applications, the Han® B bulkhead mounted housing ensures reliability of operation under extreme conditions. Users can choose from standard sizes ranging from 6B to 24B.

Large Ex d housings.

New, cost-efficient aluminium housings with Ex d ignition protection that protect standard industrial electrical components in hazardous areas have been introduced by R. Stahl. The 8250 series is designed for stand-alone wall installation and can be used in zone 1/21 or 2/22 hazardous areas (gas group IIB).

At the moment, Stahl offers two models with internal dimensions of 250 x 150 x 110 mm and 300 x 230 x 125 mm. Three further models with internal dimensions up to 540 x 360 x 300 mm will follow until the end of the year. The spacious enclosures can accommodate motor starters with performances up to 45 kW and bulky control technology. While the flameproof enclosures are an economical solution to provide for safe use of the industrial components, the housings are still easily accessible for installation work and reconfigurations: the lids can be hinged at any side, open wider than 180°, and can be equipped with captive screws if required.

Electrical components can be mounted either directly on profile rails or on mounting plates. Through a CAD-optimised design, the housing’s weight was reduced by 15%. Moreover, its copper-free aluminium alloy also ensures exceptional robustness, allowing for use in different regions throughout the world. The material is seawater-resistant. Depending on the housing’s mechanical features, it will tolerate environmental temperatures between -60 °C and +70 °C. Rated IP66, the 8250 series is also dust-tight and withstands strong water jets. The new aluminium housings are available with or without drill holes and can be equipped with an optional powder coating.

Protecting small installations.

A new range of small GRP cabinets from Intertec provides installers with increased flexibility for protecting outdoor equipment. The new MINICAB housings combine a relatively high containment capacity with convenient pipe stand or wall mounting, and feature a flat full-size hinged door for quick and easy access. They are designed to help customers simplify the layout, installation and maintenance of outdoor equipment without having to recourse to large footprint free-standing cabinets.

MINICABs are especially suitable for protecting smaller-scale field-based installations such as electrical, analytical or safety equipment against the effects of weather and unauthorised access. Their GRP construction also makes them ideal for long-life applications in harsh climates, and in plants handling chemicals and petrochemicals.

The company is initially launching the MINICAB 44 model, which has a capacity of approximately 44 litres and measures just 506 x 356 x 245 mm (HxWxD); larger versions will follow. This is the smallest cabinet-style housing that Intertec has produced to date – other products in this size range comprise two-part enclosures that split open for access.

These cabinets are manufactured from hot-pressed GRP (glass reinforced polyester) for robust, maintenance-free performance in harsh outdoor environments. This material does not corrode and is impervious to the effects of salt and common atmospheric pollutants, making it suitable for use in any type of rural, urban or industrial environment. An unobtrusive light grey in colour, the GRP is also UV resistant, has very low flammability and is self-extinguishing. An optional exterior gel-coat offers added protection for applications that involve prolonged exposure to intense sunlight.

All hinges and mounting fixtures are manufactured from corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel and the door can be fitted with a lockable handle or security-key mechanism. As standard the cabinet carries an IP54 rating, but IP65 versions are available to order for applications that require higher protection against water ingression. A durable EPDM rubber compression seal is incorporated in the moulded retaining groove that runs the full length of the joint between the cabinet and the door. The cabinet is also impact resistant.

To help simplify installation and ensure optimum thermal performance, equipment can be attached to a separate mounting plate, which is then secured inside the cabinet. Intertec offers a choice of corrosion resistant GRP or stainless steel mounting plates. For applications where it is necessary for personnel to be able to see annunciator devices such as equipment status indicators or meters without having to open the cabinet, the door can be fitted with an acrylic or safety glass window.

Intertec MINICABs are also available in versions that are suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Options include IEC 60079-0 compliant models that use a special electrically conductive form of GRP to prevent the build-up of electrostatic charge.

Panel feed-through housings offer sealing on both sides! #PAuto

The new Harting Han® HPR panel feed-through housings are sealed on both sides, and so meet the requirements of IP 66 and IP 68 according to IEC 60529 from both the cable side and the device side in a panel-mount installation.

With the new housings, no condensation from the device side can reach the contacts, eliminating the possibility of corrosion or even a short circuit. In addition, Han® HPR panel feed-through housings are ideally suited to fire-protection applications in rail vehicles that demand reliable sealing against fire and smoke in both directions.

The new housings also offer the possibility of factory pre-assembly of the cable sets, which can lead to additional benefits in terms of ease of handling and savings in time and money.

The Han® HPR panel feed-through housings, manufactured in robust die-cast aluminium, meet the usual requirements of the Han® HPR housing range, including protection of the contact area against corrosion, shock and vibration in harsh environments.

Variants are available for inside and outside installation for each of the sizes 6B, 10B, 16B, 24B. Han® HPR panel feed-through housings are equipped with the standard screw locking for the Han® HPR housing range.

Rittal Housings for TFT monitors

Rittal’s stylish housings, with a protection category of IP 65 shielding devices from exposure to dust and water jets, are designed to accommodate TFT screens up to 24” (measured along the diagonal) in the popular 16:9 and 16:10 widescreen formats. A full-width viewing window made from a single-pane of safety glass maximises the display area and a combination of rounded edges and aluminium grips prevent injury.

The side facing the operator has an attractive look and feel.
Housings containing TFT screens can be mounted quickly and efficiently thanks to a holder with the VESA 75/100 mounting hole pattern. A hinged door on the back of the housing provides easy access to the device. Manufactured from sheet steel, Rittal’s housing meas-ures 650 x 450 x155 mm.

To provide additional ways of connecting to a machine according to the needs of the application, the housing can easily be mounted to a support arm system from Rittal’s CP 60/120/180 range. With eccentrically mounted support arms, the housing can be placed in various positions, such as in niches. For the fitter’s convenience, pre-punched holes are provided in the reinforcing plate.

Connector mounting frames in plastic!

Harting has introduced plastic versions of its connector mounting frames for the Han-Port® front panel interface system. The new option provides a lightweight solution for users who need to connect external devices to controls and systems in control cabinets or machine enclosures for diagnostics or maintenance purposes.

The new Han-Port® plastic mounting frames are available as single and double versions. Users can choose between transparent and metallic finishes for the covers. A 3 mm double-bit closure is available for locking the cover. Simply clicking the enclosed rotation knob in the double-bit closure enables rotation knob closure.

The use of high-quality plastics and an IP65 degree of protection (with closed cover) allows the new plastic mounting frames to be deployed in harsh industrial environments.

The mounting frames feature a spring mechanism that lifts the unlocked cover upward by 30°, allowing users to easily detect whether the cover is closed.

The well-known plug sockets and/or data modules are inserted and snapped into place in the new Han-Port® mounting frames. This modular system facilitates a variety of combination options and allows customers to react flexibly to their different interface requirements.

Approvals by outside bodies including NEMA and UL mean that the units can be used virtually worldwide.

Industrial connector housing up to IP 67

Harting has introduced a bulkhead-mounted version of its proven Han® B industrial connector housing providing improved protection against water ingress up to protection level IP 67.

The new housing incorporates a special flange which prevents water from penetrating into the connector and consequently offers ideal protection for the contact points in the housing interior. A circumferential collar also prevents the seal from sliding off inwards or outwards, and consequently offers solid support. The use of a stable seal offsets the effect of uneven sections and provides additional protection against water penetration.

No extra costs are incurred when the IP 67 bulkhead-mounted housing is installed, as the cutout corresponds to the dimensions of the existing Han® housing portfolio. The new bulkhead-mounted housing is locked with the Harting Han-Easy Lock® levers, which allow a high contact pressure level when closed and also provide optimal sealing between the hood and the bottom housing.

The new IP 67 flange is the latest addition to Harting’s comprehensive range of housings for use in industrial environments. Potential applications are in any industrial sectors where operational reliability is required under extreme conditions, such as wind turbines, cranes, electricity substations and the rail industry.

Climate control

Climate control applications vary in many different ways, from control to air routing. Rittal offer a range of accessories that may be tailored to satisfy specific requirements.

Energy-saving philosophy that has resulted in many motors being controlled by inverter drives may also be applied to Rittal’s fan-and-filter unit; a speed control device may be used to vary the fan speed in response to the cooling demand, ultimately switching the fan off when not required.

Ingress protection of Rittal’s fan-and-filter unit may be improved by installing an additional fine filter mat or an IP56 hose-proof hood fitted with the same blue sealing material that is used in Rittal’s Hygienic Design enclosures, a proven success, particularly in the food and beverage industry.

To direct cooled air towards the bottom of an enclosure, Rittal’s air diverter may be used, or an internal fan may be fitted to optimise air distribution, as natural convection currents and the flow of air through wall-mounted cooling products will pull it upwards immediately upon entry.

Rittal’s roof-mounted cooling products have multiple supply air spigots to offer a great degree of flexibility when air distribution is being considered. Rittal’s air duct systems, duct extensions, angled deflectors and stoppers provide the ability to target those areas in the enclosure in which cooled air is required. This particular range of accessories has recently been extended to include an adaptor that allows the shallow air duct system to be used with Rittal’s smallest roof-mounted cooling units.

Fan and filter units

Rittal’s range of TopTherm fan and filter units has been extended with electronically commutated (EC) variants now available in all but the smallest unit.

With a combination of fan and dust filters and a particularly economical means of dissipating heat loads from enclosures using ambient air, Rittal’s EC fan-and-filter units employ the same diagonal fan technology as the standard version. Improved performance against static pressure offers advanced energy efficiency and a more constant air throughput to effectively minimise the occurrence of hot spots in the enclosure.

By using EC motors, an innovation that utilises DC (direct current) motors, which are more energy efficient than the conventional AC (alternating current) shaded-pole equivalent, Rittal’s new TopTherm series of fan-and-filter units offer energy savings in excess of 60 percent over previous models and also provide intelligent control and fan status monitoring for larger units.

Infinitely variable speed control enhances a means of conserving energy further by operating the fan at a speed determined by the demand for cooling. A programmable logic controller (PLC) may be used to control the fan motor, via a 0-10V DC or pulse width modulated (PWM) signal.

A tacho-signal output allows direct monitoring of the fan speed and a malfunction or failure is signalled immediately for action, minimising the risk of component failure in the enclosure and reducing system downtime.

New fixings for housings

New fixing elements for full metal housings extend flexibility of DIN 41612 connector family

Harting has added a range of new fixing elements to extend the flexibility of the D20 full metal housings used with the company’s DIN 41612 connector family.

In developing the Harting D20 full metal housing for DIN 41612 connectors, the company has concentrated on flexibility and handling convenience. For example, where components are installed in difficult-to-reach or confined spaces, internal hexagonal screws are used as fixing elements for the D20 housing to ensure that they can be screwed in easily. Even if the angle is less than 25°, a ball-head screwdriver can still be used.

These new fixing elements not only extend the range of housings available: they also offer further locking options. The new fixing elements create a robust mechanical connection thanks to their established screwing technology combined with a recently developed alternative screwless locking option. The D20 full metal housings can be secured manually with an audible click – no additional tool is needed. This makes locking and unlocking more convenient and faster.

The locking levers simplify operation significantly, and can also be used to aid insertion or removal of daughter cards in a 19-inch rack. When a large number of tightly packed daughter cards are used, this easily accessible removal aid is a great help because less force is needed.

The permanent electrical connection provided by the fixing element ensures that the housing and the racking system are always in contact, giving enhanced screening properties with attenuation of over 30 dB via the D20 housing.

The robust and vibration-proof D20 housing range is the system of choice for railway applications. The new fixing element is designed to be vibration-proof, and the plastic used for the ejection lever has the fire classification and smoke index suitable for railway applications: I2/F1 under NFF 16-101.
