Source-to-rack direct current portfolio for Ai data centres.

Helps maximise energy efficiency and reduce physical footprint, alongside DC power distribution and protection technologies to enhance overall system performance.

Infinitus is a portfolio of direct current (DC) solutions designed to manage the increasing power demands of Ai data centres from ABB. The portfolio accelerates the adoption of DC architectures in data centers improving energy efficiency and reducing power infrastructure footprint, while increasing available computing capacity. ABB expects other energy-intensive industries to make the same transition.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects global data center electricity demand to more than double by 2030 and ABB estimates that approximately 25-40% of new capacity installed in 2030 could be using DC distribution. Next-generation Ai chips are expected to draw 1 MW per rack and beyond, an increase from today’s almost 200 kW, requiring a shift to DC architecture that can support performance while driving energy efficiency. With 800 VDC distribution, the footprint is more compact while eliminating redundant conversion steps and cutting heat losses of conventional alternating current (AC) systems. A recent BCG / ABB report calculated that DC distribution delivers energy efficiency gains of more than 5% and increases available space for compute racks. For a 500MW data center, a 5% efficiency gain can mean 25 MW more power for revenue-generating IT loads and more than US $300 million (€232m) in potential additional revenue per year. With 5% efficiency gains for a 500 MW data center campus, the energy savings over one year would be equivalent to powering Washington D.C. for almost a full week.

Giampiero Frisio, President of ABB’s Electrification business area, said: “ABB has pioneered DC technology for more than 25 years across several segments. We are working closely with chipmakers, hyperscale customers, supply partners and industry bodies to set the standards and the pace for the roll-out of high-efficiency DC architectures. Infinitus is the first portfolio providing the building blocks for any data center architecture - either DC native or hybrid AC/ DC - to power next-generation Ai chips efficiently. This technology will bring similar energy efficiency gains to other energy-intensive industries such as large scale manufacturing, renewables and marine operations.”

Infinitus is the industry's first integrated source-to-rack DC portfolio. At its core is ABB’s breakthrough Infinitus solid-state transformer technology, enabling sites to operate with a smaller footprint and greater energy efficiency. As the only major electrification supplier with both the world's first fully IEC-certified solid-state circuit breaker and an industry-first static medium-voltage UPS in production, ABB delivers a breadth of technology unmatched in the market.

ABB’s Infinitus DC portfolio includes five key building blocks:

  • Medium Voltage Powertrains deliver stable resilient power from the grid or on-site generation;
  • DC Sources and Power Quality converts AC to DC removing conversion from white space;
  • DC Power Distribution delivers power safely and reliably, enabling higher power density in a smaller footprint;
  • DC Power Protection provides protection for operators, iI servers and hardware from DC overcurrents;
  • Cooling Optimisation reduces energy consumption across grey and white space with DC connected variable speed drives and motors.

ABB works with customers to design solutions tailored to their specific power demands, facility layout, and energy mix. This partnership approach ensures each deployment is optimised for maximum efficiency and reliability. The Infinitus portfolio complements traditional AC systems with DC flexibility that supports customers across all power architectures while also enabling unprecedented efficiency, reliability, and scalability for AI-era data centers.

For next-generation data centers, this integrated architecture enables the high-density, high-efficiency power delivery that future Ai chips demand. With a number of main components produced in the next twelve months, the first DC-native facilities using the complete Infinitus portfolio are expected to be installed and operational within two to three years.

The portfolio launch extends support for ABB's continued collaboration with NVIDIA, first announced in October 2025, to develop 800 VDC power architectures for gigawatt-scale Ai facilities. ABB brings more than 25 years of DC experience and over 700 patents spanning renewables, power generation, energy storage, motors and drives.

Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) connector.

Advances ultra-dense, eye-safe optical interconnects for next-generation Ai data Centres.

The VersaBeam Mini, an ultra-compact, 16-fiber Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) connector that solves critical space, thermal and maintenance challenges in high-density Ai and hyperscale networks has been introduced by Molex. Building on the award-winning Molex VersaBeam EBO interconnect family, VersaBeam Mini combines expanded beam performance with a Very Small Form Factor (VSFF) to deliver the density required for next-generation Ai data centres and networking without compromising serviceability, safety or network uptime.

“As optical densities per rack grow exponentially, network architects are hitting hard physical walls in both scale-up GPU clusters and scale-out network fabrics,” said Trevor Smith, general manager, Optical Connectivity, Molex. “With VersaBeam Mini, we are providing a ‘less is more’ solution that pairs a VSFF footprint with zero-touch EBO technology, delivering less contamination risk, reduced downtime and a smaller blast radius without needing specialised technical expertise.”

Architectural agility and operational flexibility.
Designed for space-constrained co-packaged optics (CPO), optical backbones and front-panel switch applications, VersaBeam Mini packs 16 fibers into an ultra-compact 3.5 x 9 mm footprint. This precise form factor delivers a 3x density improvement over VersaBeam 16 connectivity, letting network architects scale up to 3,456 fibers in a standard 1RU panel. By maximising front-panel real estate while simplifying internal routing, VersaBeam Mini effectively addresses the ultimate bottlenecks in Ai data centre hardware—physical space on the panel and inside the chassis. In addition, support for 16-fiber granularity results in a 9x reduction in blast radius. This empowers technicians to isolate, re-route or hot-swap specific 16-channel lanes.

Additionally, an optional mass-insertion capability allows technicians to engage up to 9 VersaBeam Mini connectors (144 fibers total) with a single push. This unique feature accelerates turn-up speed during initial rack deployment, while preserving granular 16-channel serviceability later on. Molex maintains full 1RU packing density, enabling a modular approach to scaling and servicing ports without operational trade-offs.

VersaBeam Mini streamlines optical assembly for switch OEMs while removing operational hazards for field technicians. Leveraging the groove-based design of the 3M™ EBO Ferrule, VersaBeam Mini eliminates the need for guide pins and holes. This facilitates the use of high-speed robotic pick-and-place equipment to boost factory throughput during cable assembly. The need for fewer parts also translates into streamlined supply chain management and an overall reduction in bill of materials (BOM) costs.

Since its launch in 2025, the Molex VersaBeam EBO portfolio has been recognised for zero-touch EBO reliability, which expands the beam between connectors to reduce sensitivity to dust and debris. This dramatically lowers requirements for frequent cleaning and inspection, slashing deployment and maintenance overhead by up to 85% while enabling general technicians to service links without specialised optical equipment. Inherent laser eye safety helps protect field personnel from hazards during routine maintenance and system upgrades.

First drives then motors.

Originally planned as an addition to its gear unit portfolio, NORD now supplies motors in standard and special versions for more than 100 industries. Each year, more than 1 million stand-alone motors leave the NORD Drivesystems production halls worldwide. Originally planned as an addition to its gear unit portfolio, NORD now supplies electric motors in standard and special versions to users in more than 100 industries.

In 1983, NORD Drivesystems started the production of its own motors. Today, quantities top the million mark each year. In three factories, the solution provider for drive technology manufactures asynchronous motors from 0.12 kW to 55 kW, and synchronous motors from 0.5 kW to 11 kW. With standard motors and customer-specific configurations, NORD serves a wide range of industrial requirements. The focus is on two aspects: flexibility and availability.

From continuous operation to explosion protection.
NORD motors can be found in various applications. This includes energy-intensive motors for continuous operation in intralogistics or NXD tupH®-treated smooth motors in wash-down areas in the food industry. Explosion-protected versions according to ATEX, IECEx and HazLoc for conveyor systems in dust or gas atmospheres are also part of the range.

Popular efficiency portfolio.
The efficiency portfolio with motors of efficiency classes IE3 to IE5 is one of the most popular NORD developments. It meets all efficiency regulations of the international target markets. With its IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motor, NORD even surpasses the efficiency specified by the highest defined IE class. For customers who aim to achieve a higher efficiency class in retrofitting, the manufacturer makes it easy: Identical motor dimensions allow users to perform such a change without fundamental mechanical modifications.

Quickly and internationally available.
With factories in Italy, Poland and China, NORD manufactures the standard and special versions at international hubs. Further motor assembly facilities are located in North and South America, India and Australia. This way, the company achieves short delivery times for national and international customer projects. NORD motors are thereby not only quickly available but immediately ready for use. The portfolio comprises motors with international approvals and acceptances. This allows for the worldwide integration of, for example, the asynchronous UNIVERSAL motor and the IE5+ synchronous motor without any significant changes in system and machinery design. This simplifies and speeds up system commissioning.

Quality.
NORD manufactures its motors with great production depth. By using modern production facilities and a quality management certified according to DIN ISO 9001, the company meets its self-imposed quality standards at all locations. They apply to the motors as well as any other drive component from NORD. Whether standard or special solution – they must have a long service life and work reliably.

Data centre reliability.

System-level framework and uptime diagnostic tool.

Hottinger Brüel & Kjær (HBK) has launched Data Center Availability Intelligence - a system to protect users uptime - to help owners, developers and operators secure uptime in the high-density AI era,

As traditional component-level analysis is no longer enough to support complex modern facilities, HBK’s new offer moves the focus to system-level outcomes, helping teams engineer availability during early design phases and actively protect it, post-launch, across the three critical stages of planning, validation and operation.

During planning, users can model power, cooling and network architectures before major capital choices are locked in. Next they can virtually test redundancy, dependencies and maintenance strategies before the go-live date. And in the final stage, they can leverage real-world equipment and monitor data to identify emerging risks, before these cause downtime.

HBK has also introduced Uptime Diagnostic - a targeted, low-barrier evaluation of a single critical system, such as power, cooling or design architecture. This focused engagement provides several advantages including quantified baseline of availability and downtime risk. It provides direct proof on the outcome of planned redundancy strategies – and removes trade-offs between availability, capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating efficiency.

"Understanding individual component reliability is no longer enough; we must look at how the entire system performs together," said Adi Dhora, Principal Consultant at HBK. "Our system-level approach moves teams away from reactive troubleshooting, enabling them to optimise capital costs and target maintenance precisely where it prevents downtime."

HBK’s model, established by the initial diagnostic, easily scales into a live RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability) Digital Twin. Powered by the ReliaSoft Asset Performance Framework, the solution connects real-time operational data with engineering models to guide ongoing investment, spares, and maintenance decisions.
