Analysis sensors future-proofed and IIoT ready!

Process plants typically use a multitude of sensors, each of which is normally connected to a transmitter. Older sensor technologies use analog signals to communicate with transmitters, but more modern models employ digital technology to improve accuracy, ease calibration, simplify troubleshooting, and reduce required maintenance.

Endress+Hauser Memosens technology converts the measured value to a digital signal and transfers it inductively to the transmitter, offering safe data transfer for increased availability of the measuring point and trouble-free operation. With Memosens 2.0, liquid analysis measuring points now become completely future-proofed and ready for IIoT. This new technology is available for pH/ORP, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen sensors—and it will be extended to the complete sensor portfolio for liquid analysis.

Unlocking the potential of measurement data
Memosens 2.0 sensors store numerous relevant data points, such as operating hours, minimum and maximum temperatures, measured values, calibration histories, and load matrices. All this data can be used and processed for comprehensive analysis and more precise process management. The sensors also provide a sound basis for predictive maintenance strategies when used in conjunction with Endress+Hauser’s Heartbeat Technology, along with enhanced IIoT services via the Netilion ecosystem.

Simplifying liquid analysis
The unit combines cutting-edge technology with maximum practicability. Because the Memosens sensors are equipped with highly integrated electronics, they can be calibrated and adjusted under lab conditions that are favorable for the operator, and stable for precise results. Replacing sensors in the field is a simple process and can be performed in a timely manner thanks to the lockable bayonet connector and automatic sensor identification by the transmitter.

Increasing process safety
Non-contact digital data transmission eliminates the effects of moisture, corrosion, and salt bridges—with alert messaging if the signal transmission is disturbed by other factors. Galvanic isolation ensures accurate measurement in the presence of electromagnetic interference and other electrical noise. Memobase Plus software provides full traceability of all sensors used, supporting operation according to the strict guidelines applicable to various regulated industries. Memosens 2.0 offers error-free flexibility for measuring points in hazardous areas because all explosion proof sensors can be connected to all Endress+Hauser transmitters with the same ratings.

Field replacement is simple and quick because Memosens 2.0 sensors are pre-calibrated in the lab, reducing process downtime. Unlike conventional analog sensors, these digital models store calibration data internally, and regular regeneration extends sensor lifetime.

Analytical transmitter.

The Liquiline compact CM82 transmitter has been announced by Endress + Hauser.

This transmitter accepts pH, ORP, pH/ORP, conductivity, oxygen and chlorine sensor signals from their Memosens® sensor platform. Its housing measures only 11 cm long and 2 cm wide, so even combined with the sensor, it fits into almost every assembly. Although small, it is a fully developed multiparameter transmitter, with access available via 4-20mA HART, or Bluetooth from any iOS or Android device.

Connectable to the CM82 are pH, ORP, pH/ORP, conductivity, oxygen and chlorine sensors with the blue Memosens inductively-coupled plug-in head. The Memosens technology ensures 100% reliable data transmission, with true plug-and-play and pre-calibrated sensors.

When a CM82 measuring point is configured, all settings are saved in the compact CM82 transmitter. In the case of a sensor exchange, the transmitter - and thus the measuring point configuration – can remain in place, with reconfiguration not necessary. In addition, the CM82 reads all sensor and calibration data stored in the head of a Memosens sensor. As a result, the sensor is automatically detected within seconds, and the measurement is immediately ready for use after a sensor change.

As a loop-powered two-wire device, the CM82 can be connected directly to a control component, such as a programmable logic controller (PLC), which also serves as the power supply, thus eliminating the need for a power cable. A cable for the sensor connection is also not necessary because the sensor plugs directly into the transmitter. The measuring point’s required space and wiring effort are thus minimal.

As with all other Endress+Hauser Bluetooth devices, the Liquiline compact CM82 can be operated and configured via the free SmartBlue app, which is available on Google’s Play Store or Apple’s App Store. Using the app, users can see all the measuring points on their tablet or smartphone. Special attention was paid to security: The Bluetooth connection is protected with the same technology that guards identity cards against unauthorized access by third parties. This high security level was confirmed by the German Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC).

Retractable sensor assemblies ensure continuity in process.

The Cleanfit CPA875 and CPA871 sensor assemblies from Endress+Hauser allow pH, ORP, oxygen and NIR sensors to be installed or removed during operation. By moving the sensor from the measuring position to a service position, these retractable assemblies allow the sensor to be cleaned, calibrated or replaced without interrupting the process.

The Cleanfit CPA875 is ideal in applications in the pharmaceutical and food and beverage industry where sensors must be removed for cleaning, calibration or maintenance on a regular basis, while the CPA871 sensor is ideal for applications in the water and wastewater and chemical industries. The retractable assemblies permit removal and installation, while protecting both the process and operating personnel.

In hygienic or sterile processes, the CPA875 assemblies are protected against contamination in accordance with international standards including EHEDG, ASME BPE, FDA, ATEX Directive 94/9/EC, CE/PED, EC VO 1935/2004 and Biological Reactivity (USP Class VI). In pneumatic operating mode, the CPA871 meets ATEX and CE/PED standards.

The CPA875 assemblies, along with their service chambers and process adapters, are certified by EHEDG for cleanability and sterilizability. This certifies that residual media is not only destroyed, but is also removed completely from the service chamber and the sealing surface. The service chamber and sealing surface thus remain free from product residue and microorganisms.

The design of the service chamber allows liquid media to drain freely and completely. The alignment of the inlet and outlet, as well as the flow configuration, ensures that solid built-up deposits are loosened and removed when cleaning. It is also possible to clean and sterilize the seals' contact surfaces. This ensures the sensor is free from contamination when it is reinserted into the process.
The CPA875 assemblies are available with single or dual service chambers. The front chamber in the double-chamber system can also be used as a protective barrier to the process. This chamber can be continually rinsed with water for injection, which ensures the cleaning solution cannot enter the process, even if the process seal is damaged. At the same time, this front chamber can be used to isolate the service chamber temperature from the process. The sensor can therefore be checked, replaced, calibrated, adjusted and cleaned with hot water or sterilized, all without influencing the process.

The Cleanfit CPA875 assembly has seals, process connections and couplings that make it suitable for use in food, pharmaceutical, life sciences and specialty chemical applications, while the CPA871 has similar options for the water/wastewater and general chemical industries. Materials in contact with the process medium are all stainless steel, while seals can be EDPM/FMP or Viton/FFKM, depending on the application. The immersion tube, process connection and service chamber can be stainless steel, titanium, Alloy C22, PEEK or PVDF, again depending on the application.

Both sensor assemblies are available with a manual or an automatic drive. The manual drive has a self-retaining thread to hold the sensor in any intermediate position, and can be used for process pressures up to 116 psi. The pneumatic drive can be used for process pressures up to 232 psi. In assemblies with a pneumatic drive, the service and measuring positions of the sensor are detected and reported to connected monitoring and control systems.

Digital pH/ORP sensor & PC software products for enhanced maintenance efficiency

Yokogawa has just released the new SENCOM* platform product series for the digital measurement of pH and ORP. This will join an existing lineup of quality pH/ORP solutions that includes the FLXA21 two-wire pH/ORP-transmitter. With the release of the SENCOM platform products, they bring pH and ORP measurement into the digital era.

The SENCOM platform initially consists of a SENCOM module, the FU20F pH/ORP SENCOM sensor, a SENCOM cable, and the SPS24 SENCOM PC software. The installation of a SENCOM module in an FLXA21 transmitter will give it the powerful digital signal processing capabilities required to work together with the new SENCOM sensors.
Configuration

Like its predecessor, the FU20F pH/ORP SENCOM sensor is a general purpose sensor that is suitable for a wide range of applications. The FU20F can store digital data and be calibrated using the SPS24 SENCOM PC software and/or the FLXA21. With these SENCOM platform products, our customers will be able to reduce the amount of maintenance work that needs to be performed on-site, thereby improving efficiency and reducing costs.

The target market is the process industries such as oil, petrochemicals, iron and steel, electric power, and water supply and wastewater treatment. with applications such as Monitoring the quality of treated wastewater and neutralised water and controlling the concentrations of liquid infusion systems

Development Background
Liquid analysers are used in the oil, petrochemical, iron and steel, electric power, and water supply and wastewater treatment industries to control the quality of raw materials and products, monitor reactions, and manage the wastewater treatment process. The properties of certain solutions may cause damage to or foul the sensors in these analysers and thus adversely affect measurement accuracy, so sensor calibration is required on a regular basis. However, conditions vary and it is not always safe or convenient to perform the calibration work on-site, which usually requires a converter to store data and the use of standard calibration solutions. There is a need to move this work to a safer location and also reduce measurement downtime.

Masatoshi Nakahara, Senior Vice President of the Industrial Automation Platform Business Headquarters, said, “To improve quality and production efficiency at our customers’ plants, it is crucial not only to improve plant facilities but also to keep measuring instruments in optimal condition for long-term stable operation. The newly developed digital SENCOM sensor will help customers improve maintenance efficiency and reduce costs. As part of our VigilantPlant initiative, Yokogawa will continue to develop and offer solutions that help its customers achieve the ideal plant.”

Product Features
1. Better working conditions / reduced measurement downtime
The FU20F pH/ORP SENCOM sensor is able to process digital signals and store digital information, including calibration data. Using either the SPS24 PC software or an FLXA21 transmitter, it can do offline calibration of these sensors in a laboratory, where working conditions are optimal. In addition, the ability to swap out the FU20F and replace it with a calibrated sensor on site will significantly reduce measurement downtime.

2. Quick and efficient calibration
With the SPS24 software, it will be possible to simultaneously calibrate up to four SENCOM sensors, significantly shortening calibration time.

3. Efficient data management
The SPS24 software features an integrated database capable of storing data for up to 100 SENCOM sensors. This enables predictive maintenance, allowing service staff to identify when sensor maintenance and/or replacement is required. In addition, there is no longer the need to go on-site to obtain the data stored on a converter.

*“SENCOM” comes from the phrase “SENsors with COMmunication,” which emphasises the data storage capability of these sensors. Yokogawa Electric Corporation and its subsidiary Yokogawa Europe B.V. (headquartered in the Netherlands), have jointly developed the SENCOM platform for their customers to increase maintenance efficiency and reduce cost of ownership.
Following the introduction of the FU20F, which is the first sensor to be offered based on the SENCOM platform, Yokogawa will expand the SENCOM series lineup by adding products that support four-wire liquid analysers and thereby widen the scope of measurement.

Self-contained digital pH and ORP measurement!

Yokogawa has combined its expertise in pH and ORP sensor technology with integrated digital communications and signal-processing circuitry to produce the SENCOM (SENsor COMmunication) range of self-contained smart sensing solutions.

The SENCOM smart sensor design enables improved maintenance management and diagnostics, further enhancing the simplicity and reliability that Yokogawa is renowned for. In addition, SENCOM has its own permanent calibration memory, allowing it to be calibrated in the laboratory before returning it to the field, resulting in improved accuracy with reduced operating costs, shorter downtime, and improved safety.

These sensors maintain specific measurement and calibration data and this information can be exchanged between the sensor and a transmitter such as Yokogawa’s FLEXA family. Dedicated SENCOM SPS24 management software is also available for use with a Windows PC. Utilising historical measurement, calibration and diagnostic data from the sensor, the SPS24 data management system provides users with the tools necessary to predict maintenance and calibration frequency and estimate sensor life. The calibration information can be managed, analysed and conveniently documented by the SENCOM SPS24 software.

This new sensing approach enables simplified maintenance by the replacement of “pre-calibrated” sensors. Furthermore, it is possible to monitor sensor aging in real time using a sensor “wellness” feature, as well as carrying out reference impedance measurements for the early detection of diaphragm clogging.

The new software makes it possible to optimise the performance of pH/ORP sensors for enhanced reliability and process safety. The software allows the operator to continuously monitor pH/ORP sensor measurements, perform calibrations and configure the various parameters, keeping track of up to 100 different SENCOM sensors.

The first SENCOM sensor to be introduced in Yokogawa’s new family is a pH/ORP sensor, targeting applications requiring easy, accurate and reliable measurements. Future sensors will target the full spectrum of pH and ORP applications in the power, utilities, petro-chemical, chemical and pulp & paper industries. The new SENCOM sensors are designed to deliver new levels of accuracy and reliability even in the harshest of industrial environments.

New portable water quality profilers

Xylem Analytics has announced the launch of a new range of portable multiparameter water quality meters that have been designed for spot measurements and profiling of pH, ORP, conductivity, temperature, depth and optical dissolved oxygen, in both marine and freshwater applications.

The new WTW MPP 900 IDS Multiparameter Sondes are able to take measurements at depths of up to 100m because of the IDS (intelligent digital sensors) technology which means that sensor output is converted to a digital signal within the sensors, so that data can be transmitted for longer distances without interference.

A further advantage of the IDS technology is that each sensor has its own identity which is recognised immediately by the meter when connected. In addition, calibration history is stored in the sensor which helps to further reduce any potential for error, and enables users to quickly switch sensors when necessary. Reinforced cables are available in lengths between 1.5m and 100m.

There are two versions of the new meter, both with a built-in depth sensor. The MPP 910 IDS has a single sensor port and the MPP 930 IDS has three sensor ports. All sensors also measure temperature and are used with the rugged Multi 3430 handheld meter.

Sales and Marketing Director Darren Hanson says: “The MPP900 instruments are an exciting addition to the range of portable water quality monitors offered by Xylem Analytics; with a built-in depth monitor and digital sensors the MPP900 is ideal for limnology and represents a lower cost alternative to the EXO multiparameter water quality logging sondes.”
