Valve diagnostic system for nuclear utilities.

Emerson Process Management and Teledyne Test Services (TTS) jointly developed and introduced the QUIKLOOK 3-FS diagnostic system, a new platform for testing air-operated (AOV) and motor-operated (MOV) control valves used in the nuclear industry. The dual platform minimises the cost, time, and complexity of testing safety-significant valves and helps nuclear utility managers improve the safety and efficiency of their operations.

Before this collaboration between Emerson and TTS began, many valve maintenance teams at nuclear facilities were buying separate test solutions for the two different kinds of valves. Teledyne’s QUIKLOOK platform, for example, was supporting MOV testing, and Emerson’s Fisher™ FlowScanner™ software was primarily used for AOV testing.

Now, Emerson and TTS have simplified the process by providing one AOV/MOV test platform. The QUIKLOOK 3-FS system combines FlowScanner circuitry and software into the TTS QUIKLOOK platform and provides capabilities not available in either previous product. Its features include plug-and-play measurement sensor recognition and data-conversion utilities. The QUIKLOOK 3-FS system’s updated user-interface software supports strain gauge measurement devices, supports up to 16 sensor channels, and enables interfaces to popular design-basis calculation and margin-analysis software utilities.

“The QUIKLOOK 3-FS system captures and documents fast-occurring phenomenon ─ up to 50,000 Hz ─ and reports measurements with extreme accuracy,” said Jeff VonAhnen, FlowScanner platform product manager for Emerson. “It enables nuclear-utility managers to diagnose control valves and meet regulatory testing requirements including the upcoming provisions of ASME Appendix 4.”

In an enclosure the size of a small suitcase, the QUIKLOOK 3-FS system is portable. Emerson and TTS will combine forces to sell and support the new QUIKLOOK 3-FS system.

Development, test and maintenance of CAN networks!

CanAnalyser 3 – now even more powerful

The IXXAT canAnalyser is a powerful analysis tool for development, test and maintenance of CAN networks, suitable for both, industrial and automotive systems. HMS Industrial Networks has released canAnalyser Version 3 with improved functionality and user interface.

This tool now supports up to 64 CAN channels simultaneously with the new "Multi-Board Support", and displays information by means of a uniform time base.
For modules using simultaneous access to multiple CAN channels, Multi-Board Support brings additional benefits – with the trace module for example, the canAnalyser becomes an extremely powerful datalogger solution. A particularly impressive feature is the new signal transmit module with which network devices can be stimulated very quickly and easily – on process level without underlying CAN communication having to be known in detail.

Also new in Version 3 is the extended level of portability, with which measurement configurations can be copied to different measurement computers with no loss of function.

Database support provided by the canAnalyser has been extended considerably, now allowing the import of different databases into the configuration. For data interpretation, the databases are merged into one overall network database by the canAnalyser.

The newly added statistics scripts, for analysis of frequency distributions, repeat times, response/run-times for example, are in the source code (C#) and can be adapted to user-specific requirements very quickly.

Moreover, new examples for the integrated programming interface and canAnalyser Scripting Host means it is now even easier to adapt the canAnalyser to different applications.

Improved signal interpretation means quicker error detection
The completely revised signal interpretation enables statistical information to be analysed at a glance together with process parameters – such as in the new graphics/signal module. This is particularly helpful when errors occur or service is required because the grouping of specific process parameters and network quality indicators (such as fault telegrams per time unit or bus load) means problems can be identified quickly.

Improved user interface
Other news include the new, advanced user interface with an array of different functions for laying out analysis windows perfectly on the screen, and switchover between different user configurations using a hotkey.

Intuitive window synchronisation, in which all information windows jump to the same message with a double click, provides the user a quick overview of the events at a defined point in time.

Discounted price until end of July
canAnalyser 3 is available now – HMS is offering canAnalyser 3 (standard version) with 30% off for orders placed by 31/7/2014.

Customers already using canAnalyser Standard/Lite Version 2.5 or higher receive a 30% discount off the regular update/upgrade price for the canAnalyser 3 (standard version) before 31/7/2014.

Static motor analysers

The new Baker DX series of static motor analysis equipment from SKF replaces older-generation Baker D-series and ST series surge test analysers. The DX is ideal as an entry level instrument for performing motor and generator analysis in areas such as industrial motor test/maintenance, motor servicing and OEM manufacturing.

The SKF Static Motor Analyser, Baker DX offers wide capabilities to analyse all insulation and motor circuits in AC and DC motors, gen¬erators and coils.

The lightweight, portable instruments can carry out low-voltage inductance, impedance, phase angle and capacitance, coil, DC step voltage, winding resistance, Megohm, DC Hipot, surge and DC bar-to-bar armature tests.

They feature an easy-to-use touch screen graphical user interface, are offered with a range of configuration options and accessories and can include the test functions required by the user. Options include coil test, resistance-inductance-capacitance test, DC armature test, simple meg-ohm test and either single- or three-lead configurations.

The low voltage testing capability allows for a more complete testing solution for predictive maintenance or quality management. The low voltage tests can supply up to 600 mA and frequencies from 50 to 4 000 Hz. The Baker DX also offers a modular design that allows for configuration with only the test capabilities needed for the specific application. For example, it can be only a high voltage or a low volt¬age tester or used as a unit that has both high voltage and low voltage testing.

The optional desktop software package - ‘Surveyor DX’ enables data from the tester to be moved to a PC via a USB stick. The software will allow storage of data and report generation.

Toolkit for functional safety verification

NI and CertTech LLC offer NI TestStand Qualification Toolkit for functional safety verification

National Instruments has announced the Tool Qualification Kit for NI TestStand to help meet functional safety standards, such as RTCA DO-178B/C, IEC 62304 and ISO 26262, in numerous industries that need qualified tools to verify safety requirements for electronic systems. The kit, developed by CertTech LLC, an NI Alliance Partner, defines the functional requirements NI TestStand meets, creates a set of tests to demonstrate compliance with the requirements and provides extensive documentation to show compliance in accordance with functional safety standards.

An FAA representative formally reviewed the kit to verify compliance with the DO-178B/C guidelines and concluded: “Findings in the FAA Designated Engineering Representative’s (DER) report confirmed that all objectives of DO-178B Section 12.2, FAA Order 8110.49 Section 9, and DO-330 Annex A have been successfully achieved and in many cases exceeded.”

Rather than developing and maintaining a custom test executive, engineers can use NI TestStand, a ready-to-run COTS test management software solution, to quickly develop automated test and validation systems. The Tool Qualification Kit for NI TestStand, available on the LabVIEW Tools Network, drastically reduces the time it takes to certify each project by introducing a testing methodology that allows engineers to use qualified COTS tools instead of performing a manual qualification on custom tools.

Interoperability test kit

Latest enhancements focus on control-in-the-field and ease of replacement with fieldbus devices

The Fieldbus Foundation has released its H1 Interoperability Test Kit (ITK) 6.1.0. This powerful tool tests the functionality of an H1 (31.25 kbit/s) fieldbus device and its conformity with the FOUNDATION™ function block and transducer block specifications. Version 6.1.0 includes new features to enhance device intelligence, improve consistency in instrument configuration, and simplify replacement of field devices from different automation suppliers.

The H1 ITK consists of a test engine, communication stack and function block interface card. An excellent tool for troubleshooting and debugging FOUNDATION fieldbus instruments, it includes all hardware and software required to ensure complete device interoperability. By using the H1 ITK, suppliers can run tests identical to those used by the Fieldbus Foundation before submitting their product for registration.

H1 ITK 6.1.0 builds on the extensive library of FOUNDATION fieldbus block test cases, offering a series of standardized function blocks and transducer blocks that enable increased test coverage for device developers. This includes test cases for new blocks that were previously unavailable, such as flow totalizer, analog alarm, control selector and output splitter, which support expanded device applications for control-in-the-field (CIF). A new flow transducer block is intended to simplify device integration within FOUNDATION fieldbus networks. In addition, the release provides updated test cases for existing blocks, including flow, pressure, temperature, analog positioner, and discrete positioner.

New H1 ITK test cases are focused on backwards compatibility among FOUNDATION fieldbus devices. This enhancement supports device replacement automation and enables the test kit to verify consistent behavior between device and host implementations in fieldbus-based control systems. Automation of device replacement allows the configuration in an existing field device to be restored in a newer version of that instrument without manual intervention. This "plug and play" solution ensures features are consistent between different generations of devices without reengineering the host configuration or changing any other element of the H1 network other than the new instrument.

The use of common transducer blocks also improves interoperability and simplifies device replacement by enabling a minimum level of configuration across all types of instruments. This results in greater predictability in fieldbus implementation, while reducing integration risks.

The technology enhancements with H1 ITK 6.1.0 will help increase the intelligence of smart field devices, unlocking complex control logic functionality that previously resided at the Distributed Control System (DCS) level and allowing it to be moved to more-capable field instruments. This functionality makes it easier to implement CIF strategies, enabling plants to become smarter and more autonomous. Embedded control functionality in FOUNDATION devices is one of the key enablers for achieving high availability control and a stepping-stone towards single-loop integrity.

With control at the device level, process automation functions are truly distributed and there is no single point of failure in the control system above the H1 (field device) level. If there is a malfunction in the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and a loss of visibility into the process, controllers, or any other component in the system and the control loop, including intelligent field devices, actuators and positioners, and the network, remain unaffected.

The H1 ITK 6.1.0 is available to members holding active maintenance agreements and for new purchases.
