Handheld temperature and pressure.

RS Components (RS) stocks the new DPI 705E family of handheld pressure and temperature indicators from Druck, a world leader in piezo-resistive sensors and test and calibration instruments.

The range comprises two versions – the DPI 705E for use in safe areas and the DPI 705E-IS (Intrinsically Safe) for use in hazardous areas. These models combine a tough, durable design and build on and replace the highly regarded DPI 705 family. The instruments are designed for single-handed use and introduce new and improved features to ensure even greater accuracy and reliable pressure or temperature monitoring during commissioning, fault finding, and system testing, including leak testing.

A key advantage of the DPI 705E family is its enhanced accuracy, providing 12-month uncertainty up to 0.05% full scale (FS) over a temperature range of -10°C to +50°C. An extensive pressure range is covered – from 25mbar to 1400bar in Absolute, Gauge or Differential configurations.

The DPI 705E and DPI 705E-IS both have integrated pressure sensors and are designed to interface directly with external remote pressure or optional remote plug-and-play Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) sensors, providing even more flexibility whilst out in the field. Each pressure sensor holds integral calibration data, meaning a single DPI 705E can be used with multiple remote sensors, allowing various ranges to be measured in seconds. The sensors hold a record of the calibration date, which is relayed to the operator through the ‘calibration due’ countdown shown on the pressure indicator's display.

The leak test function is rapidly configurable between one, three or five minutes. The power-efficient design means that the indicators can be used for eight hours per day, six days per week for one year using a single set of batteries.

DPI 705E products are rugged, simple to use and suitable for widespread applications in industries such as utilities, HVAC, medical equipment, metrological laboratories and clean rooms, as well as for service and maintenance.

Barometric pressure sensors for portable applications.

Two new MEMS-based barometric pressure sensors from Omron Electronic Components Europe are specifically designed to support height and pressure measurement in drones, smartphones, pedometers and other battery powered mobile systems.

The new Omron 2SMPB-02B and 2SMPB-02E sensors provide stable and reliable height and pressure measurements, allowing changes in elevation of as little as 2m to be reliably recorded.

Developed as an evolution of the successful blood pressure gauge, the new sensors have been specifically remodelled for mobile applications and are smaller at just 2.0 x 2.5 x 0.85mm in size. Due to innovations in the production process and Omron MEMS technology, the devices are very competitively priced.

The new barometric sensors measures pressure with high accuracy based on the built-in low noise 24bit ADC and feature digital control and output via I2C / SPI interfaces. Both automatically power down non-working circuits to minimise the power consumption. Individual calibration parameters are stored in One Time Programmable-ROM (OTP), and are retained when the system is powered down. An integrated temperature compensation circuit helps ensure accurate absolute pressure measurements.

Commenting, Gabriele Fulco, Omron Sensors Product Manager for Europe, said “These easy to use sensors are perfect for the growing variety of wearable, handheld and mobile battery powered applications and have low power consumption making them optimal for smart phones, tablets, pedometers and drones. Usually MEMS sensors are affected by assembly stress, but because these sensors have a ceramic substrate and a metal lid, there is much lower parameter shift during assembly.”

Both sensors are configured to measure the pressure of air between 30kPa and 110kPa. Maximum pressure is 800kPa and the sensors can be used at temperatures of -40 up to 85 Celsius without condensation or icing. The sensors have a pin layout that is compatible with alternative solutions on the market, simplifying integration.

2SMPB-02E matches the features and performance of the 2SMPB-02B but offers a better level of accuracy down to +/-50Pa. The -02B version is +/-100Pa.

Applications are extensive and include wearables, tablets, smart phones, drones, altitude meters, car navigation and floor detection.

Gas detection instrumentation for German agency!

Ion Science has recently supplied 300 Tiger volatile organic compound (VOC) monitors to Germany’s Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) where they are part of the vital chemical measurement system on board CRBN ‘first responder’ reconnaissance vehicles. The hand-held photoionsation detector (PID) was chosen for its industry-beating anti-contamination design and ability to provide continuous, real-time measurements reflecting the potentially hazardous situation.

In response to new threats such as 911 and the flood catastrophe of 2002, the BBK was established on 1 May 2004 as part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The interdisciplinary approach of this office includes all services of civil safety prevention and links them to an efficient protection system for the country’s population and its basic survival needs.

Each of the 300 CRBN reconnaissance vehicles in operation across Germany will have a Tiger instrument on board. The 4x4s are used to measure, trace and report chemical contamination, find debris and to mark and monitor contaminated areas. The crew consists of four people; two qualified teams per vehicle can operate in turns.

Clemens Verley from Ion Science Messetechnik (ISM) comments: “CRBN disasters require immediate and proper intervention. Rapid survey of large areas with the help of on board systems and simultaneous reception of GPS data allows immediate formulation of contamination profiles for population protective measures. Each vehicle’s chemical measurement system includes a VOC monitor and ion mobility spectrometer.

“In Germany, the Tiger is becoming increasingly recognised as the best performing PID on the market and widely used by the fire department, for example. We worked closely with BBK to fully understand their application and unique monitoring requirements. They subsequently chose a bespoke version of the Tiger for its well-proven, anti-contamination design and other key features, including the latest probe with leak proof seal that offers increased sideways impact resistance and reliability.”

ISM developed an innovative in vehicle docking station that charges the Tiger whilst in transit, ensuring continuous real-time measurements that provide an accurate reflection of the potentially hazardous situation.

“The measurement data is immediately downloaded in graph and table format with the results plotted on maps to show potential evacuation areas,” Clemens concludes.

Providing market-leading accuracy and run time, the Tiger’s PID sensor capabilities utilise advanced patented Fence Electrode technology, a three-electrode format with increased resistance to humidity (up to 99% RH non-condensing) and contamination. Combined with 24-hour battery life, these features maximise usage by minimising erroneous readings in high humidity and drift in harsh environments. The anti-contamination design also reduces calibration frequency.

Independently verified as the industry’s best performing PID for its speed of response, accuracy and linearity, the Tiger provided the most stable, repeatable readings when tested against competitor instruments in humid and contaminated environments.

The instrument’s well proven MiniPID 2 is a simple plug and play sensor that has been specially developed by Ion Science to deliver a dynamic and reliable response to a vast number of VOCs.
Designed for rapid detection, with an unrivalled response time of just two seconds, and the widest measurement range of one part per billion (ppb) up to 20,000 parts per million (ppm)*, the robust Tiger is ready to use, straight out of the box, and if required, extremely simple to configure.

It offers worldwide Intrinsic Safety (IS) certification, making it suitable for use in potentially explosive, hazardous environments, and also meets ATEX, IECEx, North American and Canadian standards.

Inexpensive disposable parts such as filters and lamps are easy to change, minimising downtime. Simple connectivity to a PC via the USB allows data to be downloaded quickly.

Validate humidity probes quickly and simply.

Michell Instruments has introduced a new portable verification system for humidity probes – the HygroCal100 humidity validator. Weighing just 3.2 kg, it is less than a ¼ of the weight of its closest competitor and with a battery life of up to 8 hours the unit is designed with portability in mind.

The humidity test chamber is highly stable and allows the evaluation of relative humidity sensors in the range of 5 to 95% RH. Up to seven probes, with different diameters and output signals, can be validated simultaneously. The HygroCal100’s innovative design allows the probes to be integrated with the chamber and user interface enabling the operator to easily monitor the readings of each probe during the calibration cycle. In addition, all the calibration data can be downloaded from the unit on to a USB drive for later use.

An external reference hygrometer, such as Michell’s fundamental, chilled mirror Optidew Vision, can be integrated into the system. If this reference has a traceable calibration, it allows users to incorporate this traceability into their verifications.

The unit is easily programmable through its touch-screen interface enabling calibration routines to be completely automated. The operator defines the humidity points, and time to remain at each of them, inserts the probes and the reference (if used), then leaves the unit to work through the cycle.

The HygroCal100 contains an internal polymer reference – Michell’s latest generation HS3 sensor, giving class-leading ±0.8%rh accuracy. For long term reliability, the HygroCal100 can be calibrated against an external reference. This is an automatic function: once the reference is connected and the calibration initiated, the HygroCal100 automatically runs through the steps and prompts the user for actions.

New compact portable hygrometer with fast response!

The new MDM50 portable hygrometer from Michell Instruments gives rapid dew-point measurements in compressed air – T95 to -35°C from ambient typically in less than 5 minutes. It has been designed to make spot checks of dew point in air and gases as simple and fast as possible.

The key to the MDM50’s measurement speed is the new generation of sensing element, which also provides long-term stability and resistance to chemical contamination, making the MDM50 suitable for use in industrial settings where contamination could be an issue. As well as the chemically-resistant sensor and integrated particulate filter, the enclosure is rated to NEMA 6 (IP68) when the lid is closed.

To ensure simple operation, the MDM50 is fully self-contained with an integrated sampling system within the compact case. Taking a measurement involves connecting to the sample gas with a Quick Connect or optional Swagelok tube fitting and turning on the instrument: the MDM50 automatically starts to measure the dew point of the sample gas.

As well as its simplicity, the MDM50 is a practical instrument, offering a wide measurement range of ‑50 to +20°C dew point. It is light (4kg) and fully portable. The long battery life of 16 hours operation enables users to work in locations where there is no access to charging points with no need to worry their work will be cut short. The tough, durable case protects the sensor and sampling system from damage in demanding industrial conditions.

As well as dew point in compressed air dryers, typical applications for the MDM50 include moisture measurements in medical gases, polymer chip dryers and instrument air.

High-end Visual IR thermometer

Fluke has introduced the high-end Fluke® VT04 Visual Infrared Thermometer, a troubleshooting tool with an infrared heat map which offers higher resolution as well as temperature alarms and time-lapse features. Fluke Visual IR Thermometers fill the gap for when a single-spot temperature reading is not enough and a high-resolution thermal image is more than users need: the one tool combines the visual insight of a thermal imager, the visual images of a digital camera, and the point-and-shoot convenience of an IR thermometer.

Compared to the VT02, the Fluke VT04 offers a wider 28°x28° field of view for improved scanning and up-close evaluation and four times sharper images. It also features a Hi/Lo temperature alarm which enables hot spots to be found in seconds, and time-lapse functionality which automatically monitors equipment over time or automatically captures images after an alarm has been triggered. Images are saved to a micro-SD card, eliminating the need to write down single or multiple measurements: analysis and reporting software is included.
Using the new Fluke VT04 is far faster for conducting inspections of electrical, industrial, HVAC/R and automotive applications than an infrared thermometer, which requires multiple readings and manually recorded results.

The Fluke VT04, like the VT02, instantly detects problems using blended thermal and digital imagery. It will display and save images as full visual, full infrared, or in three blended modes (25, 50, and 75 percent). Markers pinpoint hot and cold spots indicating the hottest temperature with a red box and the coldest with a blue box. A temperature reading is provided at the centre point.

Affordable, compact, and intuitive, the Fluke Visual Infrared Thermometers operate with focus-free simplicity, expanding the user base from senior to junior technicians and broadening the applications for in-house staff as well as creating new business opportunities for service contractors. Images can be imported into SmartView® analysis and reporting software, included with the VT04 and VT02, to produce professional reports that document problems detected, or repairs made, for management and customer review.
