Distributed acoustic sensing.

Continuous, seamless real-time monitoring over long distances.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) keeps critical infrastructure safe. High-resolution monitoring systems, known as fibre test heads (FTH), transform existing fibre optic networks into highly sensitive sensors for real-time detection of vibrations, movements, and acoustic events along the fibre. The devices from Laser Components cover distances of up to 100 kilometers.

The underlying technology is both elegant and effective: a laser interrogator sends short pulses of light into the fibre optic cable and analyses the backscatter. Even the slightest movement or vibration changes the scattering pattern of the light, making it measurable for the system. AI-supported software separates harmless events from actual threats. This allows for immediate detection and precise localisation of activities such as excavations, tampering attempts, or structural changes.

DAS is increasingly being deployed in areas that are essential for public safety and utilities—such as along pipelines, railway lines, power lines, and communication networks. The technology also enables continuous status monitoring in the perimeter protection of sensitive facilities, data centres, and industrial plants. It thus makes a decisive contribution to the implementation of KRITIS requirements in accordance with the NIS2 Directive and the IT Security Act.

Energy storage breakthrough.

Described as a milestone for lithium-free battery technology, a complete battery system demonstrator based on aluminum-graphite-dual-ion batteries (AGDIB) has been realised. This proves the stability of the new battery cell chemistry not only in a laboratory environment, but also in a more realistic scenario. The rechargeable AGDIB battery cells are a safe low-cost energy storage technology and follow the design-for-recycling approach, making them a future-proof lithium alternative for high power applications like dynamic grid stabilisation.

From cell to recycling: integrated value chain for an innovative battery system.
The rising demand for electrical energy – driven, for example, by the need to store and balance renewable energy – calls for suitable storage solutions. The rechargeable aluminum-graphite-ion battery (AGDIB) meets this need with its low-cost and easily available active materials aluminum and graphite. As a high-power storage device, the AGDIB can be charged and discharged in a very short time at high rates. This makes the AGDIB ideal for applications such as dynamic grid stabilisation, where batteries are used to balance frequency fluctuations with many low-energy micro cycles that favor high power performance over high energy density.

Aluminum-graphite-dual-ion battery system consisting of pouch cells, battery module, battery management system and quantum sensor.

While many new Li-free battery technologies are examined on lab-size cell level, battery system demonstrators employing new cell chemistries remain rare. However, such a battery system demonstrator based on AGDIB has now been set up within the INNOBATT project after scaling the technology to small-size pouch cells in previous research projects first. The development of this innovative battery system focuses on the whole value chain, from a sustainable Li-free cell chemistry over integration of wireless battery management system (BMS) and bidirectional quantum-based current sensor technologies to recyclability considerations.

Demonstrator validates stability of new Al-ion battery cells.
In a realistic test case, the INNOBATT demonstrator proves the stability of the new type battery cells. Integrating eight AGDIB pouch cells with a wireless BMS based on the open source BMS platform foxBMS® from Fraunhofer IISB* with secure radio frequency based (RF) communication, the prototype also features a novel diamond-based quantum sensor for high-resolution current measurement.

AGDIB active materials and cell design were improved to increase stability and reliability of the cells and ensure reproducible performance metrics. This allowed for a proper cell matching despite the manual manufacturing technology. The battery module was assembled in 4s2p configuration, employing a BMS-Slave with a safe wireless RF communication to the BMS-Master. The quantum sensor is based on NV-centers in diamond. In comparison to conventional current sensors, the measuring range covers five orders of magnitudes. Consequently, both small and large dynamical currents can be measured with a very high resolution.

This battery system successfully validates the Al-ion based cell chemistry and its high-power capabilities for grid stabilisation applications. Previously obtained results on cell level could be verified within the whole battery module by emulating instantaneous reserve applications based on real frequency data. The system proves stable performance with dynamic high current loads at 10C over long time periods and therefore demonstrates AGDIB’s ability for upscaling via successful cell manufacturing, cell interconnection and system integration. A major advantage of AGDIB is that it allows for very high discharge rates and, unlike many established battery systems, also high charging rates, as required for grid applications (e.g. providing virtual inertia).

The recyclability of the cells and modules was carefully considered during development. Cell recyclability was assessed through a physical separation process that eliminates the use of toxic chemicals, thereby facilitating the establishment of closed material cycles. The module design followed a design-for-recycling strategy, surpassing current EU regulatory requirements for battery recycling efficiencies and leading to the advancement and demonstration of this sustainable energy storage system.

Shorter technology transfer helps life sciences and patients.

Emerson collaborated with Roche, one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies, to deliver a digital library of modalities for faster deployment and utilisation of DeltaV™ Process Knowledge Management (PKM) software, minimising the time it takes to develop a process specification through its lifecycle to full commercial scale.

The DeltaV PKM Modality Library provides a set of software building blocks to help organisations quickly establish a modular approach to characterising process definitions. By further standardising process specification elements and relationships, life sciences innovators can more rapidly deliver lifesaving and life-improving treatments to patients in need.

“Today’s life sciences innovators love PKM’s ability to shorten technology transfer but are continually searching for ways to improve alignment between process development and manufacturing recipe development,” said Nathan Pettus, president of Emerson’s process systems and solutions business. “The DeltaV PKM Modality Library enables a fully digital path to technology transfer, making the entire process faster, easier and more repeatable and reliable.”

Today it can take months to establish an organisation’s standards and then create the associated validatable building blocks using the PKM collaboration environment. Users must align on an ontology, equipment classes and capabilities, use of materials and formulations, quality testing plans, etc., before they can begin creating process specification recipes. All of this must also be aligned with the submission and licensing process and within the global supply chain.

Technology transfer is a major obstacle in delivering new medical breakthroughs to patients globally. This specialised library can allow companies to overcome this hurdle by streamlining and accelerating the move from research to commercial launch.

PKM software is designed to dramatically improve and shorten the technology transfer process. It replaces manual methods with a structured repository to define the process specification and a collaborative digital platform to manage changes as that specification evolves during the process development lifecycle.

The DeltaV PKM Modality Library provides a prebuilt, proven, customisable set of specification elements where the framework for the elements is already established for a given modality. This includes examples of underlying process steps, activities, key process parameters and critical quality attributes.

Prebuilt software frameworks cut months off development and organisational alignment efforts and establish digital foundations for faster future innovation. The modality library then facilitates seamless integration into execution systems to digitally transfer specification information into working recipes.

Multi-protocol connectivity at the field level.

LAPP is launching its own remote I/O devices, the UNITRONIC® ACCESS product range, now for the first time. They expand the existing Industrial Communication offering of the global market leader for integrated solutions and brand products in the field of cable and connection technology and offer new possibilities for decentralised sensor-actuator communication. All this is achieved without time-consuming cabling or complex integration. But why is decentralisation becoming increasingly important in factory automation and what makes LAPP’s solution so special?

Rob van der Sluis
Rob van der Sluis, Head of Product & Business Development Cluster West, explains. IO-Link is playing an increasingly important role in industrial automation.

• What makes this communication standard so attractive?

“IO-Link is a communication standard that is increasingly replacing classic digital and analogue signal transmission in many areas. IO-Link transmits structured data up to 32 bytes per communication cycle. This enables diagnostic functions, recording process values and remote control by using inexpensive unshielded standard cables. IO-Link is therefore the ideal solution for the field level, the lowest level of the automation pyramid.”

• LAPP is a specialist in connection technology but is now offering for the first time active components. Why this step?

“With the new UNITRONIC® ACCESS remote I/O components, i.e. the IO-Link masters and hubs, we are now bringing active components to the field level. This means we now can offer from a single source to our customers the complete infrastructure for industrial- e networks: active and passive components including end-to-end connectivity from the sensor to the controller or even to the cloud.”

• What distinguishes LAPP’s remote I/O devices from others on the market?

“The key difference lies in their versatility: our UNITRONIC® ACCESS devices are available as multi-protocol and single-protocol versions. The multi-protocol devices support five common Industrial Ethernet protocols (PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, CC-Link IE) as well as four IoT protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, REST API and CoAP. In addition, robust metal housings and a wide temperature range from -40 to +70°C ensure reliability under harsh conditions.”

• What advantages do remote I/O devices offer for machine and plant engineering?

“Decentralisation, flexibility and cost savings. In many applications, such as intralogistics, it is inefficient to wire each sensor individually in the control cabinet. Thanks to protection classes IP67 and IP69K, our UNITRONIC® ACCESS modules can be installed directly in the plant. This saves space, significantly reduces wiring effort and thus lowers the susceptibility to errors. Another advantage is the simple plug-and-play commissioning and automatic parameterisation when replacing a sensor. This not only reduces installation costs, but also maintenance costs.”

• And what developments can we expect from LAPP in the future?

“Our remote I/O devices are not a one-off project, but part of a comprehensive strategy. We are continuously working to expand our portfolio, for example with complementary diagnostic and visualization solutions. This can be experienced live in our LAPP Exploration Centre in Stuttgart (D).”

Event camera.

Process monitoring through event-driven image and video sequences as well as live streams.

The VOC event camera, from Pepperl+Fuchs, enables event-driven recordings with up to 900s before and after the event via various trigger options such as software, hardware, or motion inputs. This allows problems and their triggers to be identified and documented.

Due to the integrated circular buffer, videos are continuously buffered and stored in the integrated memory for a definable length when a trigger signal is received. The live stream and the option of recording with a timestamp and individual additional text ensure transparency and simplify analysis. A high level of data protection is ensured by various functions such as blanking out defined image areas, deactivating the circular buffer for maintenance work, and face softening. Encrypted data transmission using the HTTPS protocol ensures comprehensive cybersecurity.

Thanks to the high temperature range of -30 ... +50 °C and the degree of protection of IP65, the event camera is suitable for a wide range of applications. The camera can be easily integrated into IT systems via REST API. Live streams can be called up for web interfaces via WebRTC or for standard HMI displays via RTSP streams.

Ethernet-APL in process control.

From safe commissioning to seamless documentation and proactive maintenance.

The Ethernet-APL Field Switch from FieldConnex gives users a complete overview from commissioning to plant management. Pepperl+Fuchs presented the switch recently. Even during commissioning, Ethernet-APL allows the installer to save time. Each switch and all connected field devices appear immediately in the system. The quality of the installation can be checked and documented immediately with a commissioning report. This ensures reliable communication right from the start.

All settings on field devices and switches are configured remotely and fully documented in the asset management system. This minimizes errors, especially when replacing devices, and simplifies collaboration between all parties involved.

The asset management system can record the switch's self-monitoring and the quality of the installation online. The switch provides real-time information about changes to the installation quality. As a result, the maintenance team can generally intervene in a targeted manner without jeopardizing production.

Ethernet-APL field switches form the bridge between control technology and the field. The associated seamless integration of IT and OT enables an unprecedented wealth of data. This enables a change from the often reactive to a proactive approach to plant maintenance. Plant downtimes are significantly reduced and productivity increases accordingly.

Advanced remote monitoring for natural gas infrastructure.

Enhances safety, increasing reliability and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The Fisher™ ARMOR™ solution for improving the operation of natural gas utility grid systems has been introduced. This digital field monitoring device features advanced measurement and communication capabilities designed specifically to enhance safety, streamline data collection and ensure regulatory compliance — all while supporting a digitally native workforce.

Natural gas utilities often need to monitor and analyze key variables at multiple points throughout their distribution systems, with data and information available locally or remotely. These capabilities are needed to improve safety and compliance, as regulatory bodies increasingly push for mandated monitoring at all natural gas district stations.

Enhanced monitoring can also improve efficiency by reducing the need for frequent field visits and excessive maintenance. Existing solutions are either too limited regarding the number of variables measured and communication options, such as with chart recorders and meter sets, or too complex, typically using remote terminal units based on programmable logic controller (PLC) technology.

ARMOR addresses these and other issues as the only natural gas monitoring device of its type that can monitor pressure, travel and discrete input. Pressure measurement includes up to three values for monitoring at various points in the network to provide system status and equipment operational performance.

Its templated and configurable dashboards and reports, along with its mobile app, simplify data gathering and analysis. It can serve as a regulator or station monitoring solution, and it can be used for end-of-line monitoring.

The new Fisher device leverages the trend of SCADA systems evolving to include cloud capabilities by providing additional monitoring capabilities through a cloud-based platform, making data accessible anytime, anywhere.

The DeltaV™ SaaS SCADA platform complements ARMOR, providing a proven monitoring platform with analytics capabilities. This allows for data-driven decision-making with predictive analytics, a feature not available with most competitive products. It has an intrinsically safe battery with up to a 5-year life span. It's built to withstand harsh environments with an IP66 water and dust resistance rating, a CSA Class 1 Division 2 certification, and an operating temperature range of -40 degrees Fahrenheit to +160 degrees F.

Drive electronics.

“For us, drives are more than just their power.”

Since the 1980s, frequency inverters have been an integral part of the modular products offered by the specialist for drive solutions from Bargteheide (D). NORD’s drive electronics portfolio meets the requirements of numerous industry applications and always stays close to the market with its developments.

During the configuration and design of a drive system, NORD takes more into account than just motion. The focus is on energy consumption, increased operational reliability, reduced total cost of ownership or similar issues. “For us, drives are more than just their power”, says Jörg Niermann, Head of Marketing at NORD DRIVESYSTEMS. “We develop drive solutions that are precisely tailored to applications and associated customer requirements.”

Compatible and multi-functional.
The company maintains a wide range of products from which it can precisely develop system solutions for applications. Since the mid-1980s, an extensive portfolio of centralised and decentralised drive electronics supplement the manufacturer’s motors and gear units to create complete solutions. The range of services and functions reflects the diverse needs of the more than 100 industries supplied by NORD.

The frequency inverters are therefore characterised by high compatibility with all system designs and numerous integrated functions that make the integration of additional components superfluous.

  • NORDAC PRO is the control cabinet inverter with multi-protocol Ethernet interface and multi-encoder interface for multi-axis control.
  • NORDAC LINK for installation close to the motor provides full plug-in capability, therefore facilitating the installation and maintenance.
  • NORDAC FLEX is installed directly on the motor and has a modular structure as well as scalable functions.
  • NORDAC ON for motor mounting controls the high-efficiency motors from NORD and provides easy commissioning thanks to its multi-protocol Ethernet interface and plug-and-play capability.

The programme is constantly being developed further to meet the changing market requirements. Among others, the functional safety of the NORDAC frequency inverters is extended step by step to include additional communication protocols. In a next step, the NORDAC ON will feature new safety functions: In addition to STO and SS1, it will also be available with SLS, SMS and SSM in the future. Based on the Profisafe and FSoE interfaces, integration into existing Ethernet environments and operation as a stand-alone solution will then be possible.

The NORDAC ON will soon also be available for the wash-down area. As NORDAC ON PURE, it will feature the food-safe NXD tupH® surface treatment, a smooth, rounded housing design and a reduced number of plugs. Then, NORD will be able to supply complete drive solutions with aluminium housings and particularly resistant surfaces from a single source.
