Programmable DC PSUs.

Powerstax can now supply the upgraded range of Magna-Power SL Series 1U programmable DC power supplies.


Now offering up to 95% efficiency and carrying a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) safety listing the SL Series is comprised of 99 different models, combining the latest power semiconductor technology with Magna-Power’s signature robust current-fed power processing topology to deliver unmatched 1U programmable power levels from 1.5 kW up to 8 kW.

With its advanced microprocessor control and feature set, the SL Series provides the performance and functionality necessary to address cutting-edge applications, including aerospace test and measurement, automotive component testing, particle acceleration, semiconductor fabrication and component test, industrial and renewable energy, as well as general laboratory research and development.

The upgraded SL Series now boasts among the industry’s highest efficiency in its class, up to 95% efficient across a wide range of models, providing significant energy savings for automated test equipment (ATE) product validation and burn-in, as well as reduced enclosure cooling requirements. With its carefully planned internal cooling layout, air flows only across heatsinks via side air intakes with rear exhaust, not across sensitive electronics. This layout, along with the SL Series efficiency gains, have allowed the product line to be expanded to higher power levels than is conventionally offered in a 1U package, while still maintaining its continuous full power operation at 50°C maximum ambient operating temperature.

The Magna-Power SL Series was introduced in 2015, and subsequent expansions in power range has now established it as their most popular product line. “The SL Series is proof that power density is king for rack-mount programmable power supplies,” comments Phil James, Sales Director of Powerstax. “The SL Series efficiency gains and NRTL listing directly support our strong OEM customer-base, providing significant savings in energy costs and regulatory approvals for our customer’s products.”

In addition to the CE Mark the product line has carried since its introduction, the SL Series now carries an NRTL safety listing, meeting the relevant electrical safety standards testing requirements set forth by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The SL Series is now rated by Intertek to conform to UL61010-1:2012 Ed.3+R:29Apr2016 and certified to meet CSA C22.2#61010-1-12:2012 Ed.3. The SL Series Gen 2 is also released with all new HTML-based user documentation.

High voltage PSU & chargers.

Powerstax has been appointed as distributor for the Technix range of high voltage DC power supplies and capacitor chargers in Great Britain. Technix products are in use worldwide by major OEMs and leading research laboratories.

Established in 2000, Technix designs and manufactures a wide range of high voltage DC power supplies, capacitor chargers and electron beam power systems covering voltages from 1kV to 350kV and with power ratings from 300W to beyond 500kW. The latest designs include a 4½ digit display and a voltage limitation function while parallel operation allows maximum output power to be increased if required.

Employing high efficiency zero current switching (ZCS) resonance technology, the modular design and wide range of options allows Technix to provide flexible and customized power solutions while maintaining high-reliability and fast delivery times. Outputs are available as positive, negative, reversible or floating and digital interfaces including RS232, Ethernet, Profibus or Optical Fibre may be specified. Customized analogue interfaces including 24V relay, isolated interface or user custom interface may be requested.

Programmable power supplies.

Powerstax has been appointed as a distributor for Magna-Power’s market leading range of Programable Power Supplies. This extensive product range complements the existing Powerstax portfolio of DC power supplies and Transformer Rectifiers.

Magna-Power provide versatile high power density DC power solutions from 1.5kW to in excess of 2000kW. With fully variable output voltage ratings from 0-5Vdc through to 0-10kVdc Magna-Power can satisfy most test and measurement, research and bulk power requirements in many different applications. Up to 8kW of output power is available from the 1U SL series and all models are available with analogue and digital serial interfaces, together with the option for IEEE-488 GPIB control.

Power appointment!

Powerstax has appointed Phil James as Sales Director.

“I’m really pleased that Phil has joined our team to head up the Sales organisation,” said Chief Executive Officer Tim Worley in announcing the appointment. “He brings a wealth of power sector experience and many industry contacts which will underpin the ambitious sales growth plans we have for Powerstax. Phil’s specific knowledge of the high voltage power sector will also allow us to broaden our product lines and reach and will result in an increased number of cross selling opportunities”.

Having served a classic M.O.D apprenticeship in Military Aircraft Avionics, Phil completed an HNC in Industrial Measurement and Control Systems and following three further years with the M.O.D, began his career in the Power Electronics industry eventually joining Glassman Europe Ltd in 1994. During more than 24 years’ service at Glassman Europe he progressed from Sales Engineer to European Sales Manager and finally to General Manager, gaining invaluable knowledge and experience in markets and applications for high voltage and programmable dc power supplies.

 “Following the acquisition and subsequent changes to the Glassman business, I seized the opportunity to join Powerstax Ltd. as Sales Director. Having known its CEO Tim Worley for many years, I was convinced of the conviction, quality and drive of this principled Power Conversion company and its highly skilled and flexible workforce. Obsolete PSUs?

Powerstax offers users of legacy equipment and those involved with repair or refurbishment of critical or capital systems form-fit-and-function replacement power supplies incorporating the latest technology and providing major increases in reliability and efficiency.

Offering this expertise to users of legacy systems by providing form-fit-and-function replacement power supplies ensures critical and capital equipment can continue in service for many more years improving ROI and avoiding unnecessary replacement costs.”

A recent example involved the recommissioning of an ion implant system used in semiconductor device fabrication. Replacing the over 20-year-old power supplies without the need to modify the system chassis or control systems required a custom designed power supply.

The replacement product supplied made use of a modern high efficiency AC-DC “brick” module with an additional current limit circuit and an external output voltage adjustment circuit via a 10-turn potentiometer fitted to the front plate to allow it to function exactly as the original power supply. The new power supply has a 90-253 VAC universal input allowing the original input voltage select link to be removed and provides an output of 48VDC @ 7.5A.

Design engineer for power electronics.

Powerstax has recruited a new Design Engineer, Harit Pokharel, at their research and development and manufacturing facility in Wickford, Essex (GB), where he will work on switched mode and transformer rectifier products.

Harit recently completed his Masters in Electrical Power Engineering from University of Greenwich (GB) with Distinction.

“I really appreciated the warm welcome I received from everyone at Powerstax,” Harit comments “I am proud to be starting my career at a company where I can be involved in the complete design cycle from concept through design, manufacture and test.”

Harit has special interest in renewable energy and heat dissipation management, he continues “If we can reduce the heat dissipation from power units further through better design then higher efficiency products result which is vital for the future.”

In his spare time he practices photography, loves swimming, camping and, trekking. Having attended the highly regarded Budhanilkantha School in Nepal, where English has been the official language of instruction since 1983, he has recently been chosen as President of SEBS-UK (Society of Ex-Budhanilkantha Students), a volunteer organization, to support school alumni living in Europe for the next 2 years.

Legacy PSUs.

Replacements and alternatives for legacy Kingshill linear power supplies are available from Powerstax. For many years Kingshill made a very large number of a wide variety of their very popular linear power supplies commonly used in high reliability industrial, test and measurement, instrumentation systems and offshore platforms.

These products are now supported by Powerstax who, in addition to a repair service, can offer direct replacement units in the event of repairs being uneconomic. Powerstax can also provide form-fit-and function replacements for discontinued items from Kingshill and other manufacturers. This practical, cost-effective alternative enables a quick and simple solution for replacement of existing Kingshill and other installations. Use of Powerstax replacement products helps to speed the selection process, minimise engineering disruption and reduce the large investment traditionally associated with a power supply re-design.

Power solutions manufacturers appoint sales engineer fro Britain.

Powerstax has appointed Martin Langmead as their new Sales Engineer. Martin has had a long and distinguished career designing-in and selling power supplies and has worked for well-known companies including Powerline, XP, Nu Horizons, UR and Xcel Power. He joins Powerstax to focus on growing their British business, focusing particularly on the switched mode ranges of power conversion products.

Quality with power!

Powerstax has been awarded ISO 9001 on its recently combined manufacturing facility in Wickford, Essex (GB).

The long-term home to the ‘Drake’ brand of power conversion products now also houses production of the Powerstax range of ultra-high efficiency DC:DC converters and front-ends and value-added system assembly. After due process the complete facility is now ISO 9001 approved.

Powerstax acquired Drake power products and their manufacturing facility in in 2012 and the recent relocation of the Powerstax manufacturing completes the planned restructuring of the company to manufacture and support all Powerstax products from this one facility.

High power industrial power supplies!

The Unistax® range of power supplies from Powerstax offer high levels of ruggedness and is designed for use in stringent industrial applications. Available with single and three phase inputs Unistax® power supplies offer output voltages up to 200V and output power up to 10kW. To simplify system integration there are multiple mechanical options available including chassis and 19” rack mount versions.

Powerstax Unistax® models can exceed 95% efficiency and are fully thermally protected. Standard features include constant voltage or constant current operational modes, overvoltage and over current protection and a number of status indicators and remote control functions are available. Nominal output voltages are 8 to 200VDC with output adjustable from 50-100% voltage or current, with 0-100% available as an option. Operating temperature range is 0° to 40°C and output remote sense and current sharing is available to special order.

Power products for North America

Intelligent Power has been appointed as a value added reseller for the North American market by Powerstax. Based in Austin (TX USA), Intelligent Power will be able to provide Powerstax customers with locally based design and engineering support for power conversion systems employing the wide range of high efficiency, highly configurable Powerstax full brick converters and power shelves.

Established since 2005 Intelligent Power has a customer base which includes MIL, aerospace, RF and IT equipment manufacturers, all markets where Powerstax products are widely used. With over 60 employees and 25,000 sq. feet of production space Intelligent Power offers their customers full outsourced engineering and manufacturing services.

Rack mounted PSU

The A3600 series of power supplies from Powerstax (formerly APC), offers system builders a convenient and compact power source for applications including communications, industrial, instrumentation and test and measurement. Offering up to 3600 watts of output power in a 1U high and 350mm deep 19“ rack mount package the Powerstax A3600 can provide single and very flexible multiple output solutions.
All outputs are isolated and may be connected in series or parallel to provide many thousands of possible output configurations or up to 36 individually adjustable single outputs. Input voltage range is nominal 115VAC or 230VAC

The design and topology of the Powerstax A3600 makes it possible to individually adjust, enable, parallel or stack the outputs to provide literally thousands of power solutions and allows rapid mainstream production turnaround of CE marked configured units in a matter of weeks.

Power solutions specialist appoints new EMEA director

Powerstax has appointed a new Director of Sales, EMEA. Rob Hill is returning to Britain from the USA, where for the last six years he has held a number of senior posts in the power industry, to take up this new role.

Tim Worley, CEO of Powerstax, comments; "Powerstax has continued to grow  its export business throughout the global downturn and we are making this strategic appointment to ensure that we find new opportunities in EMEA, while continuing to support our existing customers and sales channels. Our success in the USA is due to our philosophy of becoming an extension to our customer’s design process and offering a full and fast response in every area of our business. As our business continues to grow Rob will ensure EMEA customers have a senior voice within our company”

In his last three career moves Hill has been at senior management or director level and has overseen product marketing, product and business development, global marketing communications, strategic and major OEM sales, sales management and distribution channel management. He has first-hand experience of the rapidly changing high technology environments of North America, Asia, and Europe. Before leaving for the USA Hill held various positions with power conversion, networking and data acquisition companies and holds a BEng. in Electronic Engineering (BSEE).

Worley continues; “We have been looking for the right person for this senior role in Powerstax for some time and Rob brings a great deal of relevant experience with him from which both Powerstax and our customers will benefit”.

Environmentally friendly waste water treatment

Powerstax and their high-energy partners DP Energy have provided a power solution for an electrochemical water-treatment system (electro-coagulation) used for removal of dissolved and suspended contaminants from waste-water streams. The development system has successfully completed a commercial-scale pilot trial at the British wastewater treatment works of a multinational manufacturer.

The system has been developed to treat effluent from the manufacturer’s paintwork department, specifically reducing phosphate concentration in the waste water. Electro-coagulation technology is used to remove phosphates and reduce landfill more effectively than traditional chemical treatment.  By removing the requirement for chemical dosing, and producing a smaller quantity of sludge for disposal, the technology offers major environmental and economic benefits.

Minimising the energy consumption required by the system was a major design criteria and Powerstax developed a highly efficient bespoke power solution for the application. The custom designed 20VDC/ 500A 19” rack mounted HF Power Source provided the end user with the key feature of reversible current flow. The power supply offers external control of output voltage and current and output monitoring using 0-10V isolated analogue signals.

Requiring a three phase, three wire supply (Public Low Voltage Network) input voltage of 400VAC, the power supply has a power factor typically >0.94 at full load and efficiency >88% (after Power Factor). Full protection features as standard include output current protection with internal electronic control of current limit and short circuit protection. Front panel LED’s indicate power on, unit on, over-temperature, low current alarm, under Voltage and over voltage. External control is provided for enable/run (stop/start), reverse output and alarm (trip) reset. A full range of alarm signals are available to provide information to central control systems including low current, on/standby, mains on and enable, over voltage, over current, high temperature, polarity normal, polarity reverse. The rack mountable unit has dimensions of 482.6mm x 394.1mm x 212.7mm and an ambient operating temperature range of 0 to +40ºC.

Outstanding results were achieved at the waste water treatment plant with up to 95% phosphate removal and up to 70% landfill reduction due to lower sludge volumes.  Other benefits of the technology include reliability of materials supply and improved control of the process.

Power factor correction

New Power Factor Correction Converters from Powerstax

Powerstax has launched its new FP Series, AC to DC, 1000W and 600W power factor correction (PFC) modules.

The Powerstax FP Series are “full brick” (116.8x61x12.7mm) sized modules providing high performance AC-DC Power Factor Correction offering end users a typical system power factor of 0.99. The converters have been developed to provide front-end power conditioning for systems using high input voltage DC-DC Modules. The Powerstax PFC Modules offer a cost effective alternative to designing power supplies with discrete components in many applications.

The Powerstax FP Series of PFC modules incorporate surface mount technology to achieve high power density and reliability. The converters are available with either a universal input voltage range, (85V - 264VAC), for worldwide applications or high-line (230VAC) only, both types provide an output voltage of 380VDC.

The FP PFC series offer system builders many control options and protection features. The ENABLE output can be used to control the load DC-DC converters. DCOK and VAUX outputs are available to provide monitoring of the system if required and early warning of mains failure. A SYNC input pin allows modules to be synchronized to an external system clock for particularly noise sensitive applications. The modules have inrush current limiting, thermal shut down, output over-voltage and input under-voltage protection.

The Powerstax FP series are in the industry standard “full brick” package (116.8 x 61 x 12.7mm), offer high efficiency of greater than 95% and conform to IEC-1000-3-2. The modules have an operating temperature range of -25°C to +100°C (base plate), thermal protection and carry a two year warranty.

Director of Sales - North America

Powerstax has appointed Lonnie Friend to the post of Director of Sales for North America. This strategic appointment is in response to continued strong sales growth in the USA which now accounts for over 50% of Powerstax worldwide sales.

Lonnie has worked in the OEM electronics industry since graduating from Ohio State University. The majority of Lonnie’s experience has been in the power supply industry serving as the principal staff member at Director or Vice President level for five US power conversion companies over a period of some 30 years. Lonnie has a wide range of relevant experience including establishing, managing and motivating strong and disciplined sales organisations, building strategic relationships with tier-one key accounts, devising and implementing tactical plans that meet corporate strategic goals and developing technology roadmaps that support corporate business needs.

Lonnie has been married for over 40 years and has one Son and a Granddaughter. He has authored numerous technical articles and served on Board of Directors for the Power Supply Manufacturers Association.

Powerstax has supplied an AC power source to the famous Brooklands museum as part of an ongoing project to restore the original flight simulator used to train pilots for Concorde.

Brooklands was the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, constructed at Weybridge, Surrey (GB) in 1907. More than a great sporting arena, Brooklands was the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation, home of Concorde and the site of many engineering and technological achievements throughout eight decades of the 20th century.

The Concorde simulator has been donated to the museum and is gradually being restored to the point where all of its major flight-deck instrumentation, including the legendry MACH meter will function. Aircraft control systems require 26VDC @ 400Hz and initially a number of small, second hand power supplies had been bought at auction to get the project off the ground. As more of the flight deck has been brought to life a single, more reliable power solution which could provide enough power for the current level of activity and planned future needs was required.

Gordon Roxburgh, the volunteer in charge of this project (see his website on "Concorde: Celebrating an aviation icon"), comments; "We needed a more powerful AC power supply that could meet the aircraft power specifications and provide enough output for our existing and future needs. As a charity the cost was also an important factor and the Behlman AC power source and special price offered by Powerstax met all of our needs".

The Concorde flight simulator now at Brooklands was decommissioned in 2004 and the volunteers are being assisted by the University of Surrey to replace the original control systems. Visitors to the museum can “take a flight” in the simulator and eventually be able to experience a functioning Concorde flight-deck
