Variable capacitance accelerometers

Meggitt Sensing Systems Introduces TEDS Capabilities into

Meggitt Sensing Systems has introduced Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) capabilities into its industry best-selling Endevco® model 7290D series, allowing it to be used within larger channel count applications. The model 7290D series is a high-accuracy, variable capacitance (VC) accelerometer family, offering exceptional thermal stability, reliability and performance within flight test, engine testing and other extreme temperature testing environments.

Offered in five different models with available measurement ranges from 2 g to 100 g, the patented design of the Endevco® model 7290D series (U.S. patents 4,574,327; 4,609,968; and 4,999,735) incorporates a VC sensing element with gas damping and internal over-range stops, allowing the sensor to survive significant shock and acceleration loads of up to 10,000 g, with 2.5% total dynamic accuracy.  Units feature excellent non-linearity, including hysteresis, of typically 0.2% for ranges of 2 g to 50 g.

Integral to each accelerometer is a custom signal conditioner, enabling the device to accept input voltages from 8V to 30V with a high level, low impedance output. The ±2.25 V differential output (single-ended output optional) is DC coupled at a bias of approximately 2.5V. In order to maintain stringent thermal characteristics and high accuracy, a custom ASIC provides factory programmable temperature compensation, achieved via five-point linear fit algorithm, for both thermal sensitivity and thermal zero shifts. Units are integrally temperature compensated from -55° to +125°C, to ensure temperature accuracy over the full military range.  TEDS capabilities (conforming to IEEE 1451.4) allow for onboard storage of serial number and calibration data, for simplified test setups with reduced errors.

All Endevco® model 7290D series units are shipped standard with an integral cable of customizable length. Models are also available with an optional triaxial mounting block, the Endevco® model 7990. Recommended accessories for use with the Endevco® model 7290D series include the model 136 three- channel signal conditioner; the model 4430A bridge transducer signal conditioner; or the model 4990A (Oasis) multi-rack based signal conditioning system.

Ultra low-noise remote charge converter

Meggitt Sensing Systems has announced the re-launch of Endevco® model 2771C-XX, an ultra-low noise remote charge converter (RCC), designed to facilitate even more precise measurements from piezoelectric transducers within mechanical system health monitoring, nuclear power plant/regenerative energy and environmental testing applications. This highly popular model is now being offered at a lower price and as a lower noise drop-in replacement for legacy Endevco® 2771B models or other industry equivalents.

Offered with three individually fixed gains of 0.1 mV/pC; 1.0 mV/pC; and 10 mV/pC, the model 2771C-XX offers a rugged two-wire (IEPE), single ended design operating from constant current power (4-20 mA), with a broadband noise range down to 5µ Vrms and frequency response of 0.4 to 50 kHz. Both RCC signal output and input current are carried along the same wire. Housed in a rugged, small package, units are designed to withstand shock loads of up to 100 g peak and are radiation tested to 1.0 MRads.

Because of its low impedance voltage, signal output from this unit is less susceptible to noise pick-up. Also, shunt capacitance of the cable connecting model 2771C-XX to the main signal conditioner does not significantly affect system noise or sensitivity. It can also support TEDS (per IEEE P1451.4) for smart sensor and larger channel count applications, and includes an available M1 Version with male BNC to facilitate easy panel mounting. The RCC is designed for direct compatibility with both Endevco® and other industry piezoelectric charge output accelerometers.

Dual electromagnetic/piezoelectric structural excitation system

Meggitt Sensing Systems has announced the new market introduction of the Wilcoxon Research model F4/F7, a dual piezoelectric and electromagnetic vibration system, or “shaker”, designed to provide wide frequency range structural excitation; simulate external forces; determine structural resonance frequencies; and provide structural characterizations under excitation within aerospace, automotive and general research and testing applications.

The unique design of the Wilcoxon Research model F4/F7 combines a high-frequency piezoelectric vibration exciter (model F7) encircled by a low-frequency electromagnetic vibration exciter (model F4). Units incorporate a transducer base, containing a force gauge for test structure force monitoring; and an accelerometer, for measuring resultant motion. Transducer signals can be fed into either read-out equipment or signal conditioners. The model F4 electromagnetic vibration generator provides low frequency excitation from 10 Hz to 7,500 Hz, whereas the model F7 piezoelectric vibration generator produces vibrational forces over a high frequency range of 500 Hz to more than 20 kHz, resulting in the net capability to provide high force-to-weight output and a continuous sweep from low to high frequencies of 10 Hz to more than 20k Hz, with excitation capabilities across the entire audio range.

The model F7 contains a stack of piezoelectric plates which requires a voltage step-up (impedance matching via matching network) for high force output levels. The model F4 includes an air-cooling feature, allowing it to be run at higher output levels for extended periods without overheating. Its lightweight coil and bobbin are rigidly attached to the F7 generator, and incorporate use of heavy cylindrical magnets, which are suspended by two rubber diaphragms. The added dynamic weight is relatively low, since the rubber suspended weight does not affect axial or rotational inertia of the vibration generator core above its 30 Hz system resonance frequency. In addition, the compact, lightweight model F4/F7 shaker can easily be attached directly to a test structure in any position without external supports. Two power amplifiers are required to provide a continuous sweep. Input and output cables are provided.

Available in three models, with sensitivities of 20, 50 and 100 pC/g and choice of three ruggedized connector styles, the Endevco® model 6222S series offers high sensitivity and reliability in a low-profile package. Models feature the company's own proprietary Isoshear® construction, which significantly reduces transient temperature and base strain outputs, while maintaining a high mounted resonance and continuous operation in temperatures of up to +260°C (+500°F) with long Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF). The Endevco® model 6222S series comes with a standard ARINC three-point mounting configuration, three mounting bolts and is designed with a rugged two-pin 7/16-27 UNS-2A threaded receptacle with an available three-pin option. As a self-generating device, the sensors require no external power for operation.

The model 6222S series provides a balanced differential output, allowing them to be used with any industry differential charge amplifier. This unit is designed to be compatible with the Endevco® 6917B and 6917D series of shielded, softline cable assemblies.

This product family has proven industry pedigree, with more than 13,900 units shipped to date.
