Variable capacitance accelerometers

Meggitt Sensing Systems Introduces TEDS Capabilities into

Meggitt Sensing Systems has introduced Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) capabilities into its industry best-selling Endevco® model 7290D series, allowing it to be used within larger channel count applications. The model 7290D series is a high-accuracy, variable capacitance (VC) accelerometer family, offering exceptional thermal stability, reliability and performance within flight test, engine testing and other extreme temperature testing environments.

Offered in five different models with available measurement ranges from 2 g to 100 g, the patented design of the Endevco® model 7290D series (U.S. patents 4,574,327; 4,609,968; and 4,999,735) incorporates a VC sensing element with gas damping and internal over-range stops, allowing the sensor to survive significant shock and acceleration loads of up to 10,000 g, with 2.5% total dynamic accuracy.  Units feature excellent non-linearity, including hysteresis, of typically 0.2% for ranges of 2 g to 50 g.

Integral to each accelerometer is a custom signal conditioner, enabling the device to accept input voltages from 8V to 30V with a high level, low impedance output. The ±2.25 V differential output (single-ended output optional) is DC coupled at a bias of approximately 2.5V. In order to maintain stringent thermal characteristics and high accuracy, a custom ASIC provides factory programmable temperature compensation, achieved via five-point linear fit algorithm, for both thermal sensitivity and thermal zero shifts. Units are integrally temperature compensated from -55° to +125°C, to ensure temperature accuracy over the full military range.  TEDS capabilities (conforming to IEEE 1451.4) allow for onboard storage of serial number and calibration data, for simplified test setups with reduced errors.

All Endevco® model 7290D series units are shipped standard with an integral cable of customizable length. Models are also available with an optional triaxial mounting block, the Endevco® model 7990. Recommended accessories for use with the Endevco® model 7290D series include the model 136 three- channel signal conditioner; the model 4430A bridge transducer signal conditioner; or the model 4990A (Oasis) multi-rack based signal conditioning system.

Ultra low-noise remote charge converter

Meggitt Sensing Systems has announced the re-launch of Endevco® model 2771C-XX, an ultra-low noise remote charge converter (RCC), designed to facilitate even more precise measurements from piezoelectric transducers within mechanical system health monitoring, nuclear power plant/regenerative energy and environmental testing applications. This highly popular model is now being offered at a lower price and as a lower noise drop-in replacement for legacy Endevco® 2771B models or other industry equivalents.

Offered with three individually fixed gains of 0.1 mV/pC; 1.0 mV/pC; and 10 mV/pC, the model 2771C-XX offers a rugged two-wire (IEPE), single ended design operating from constant current power (4-20 mA), with a broadband noise range down to 5µ Vrms and frequency response of 0.4 to 50 kHz. Both RCC signal output and input current are carried along the same wire. Housed in a rugged, small package, units are designed to withstand shock loads of up to 100 g peak and are radiation tested to 1.0 MRads.

Because of its low impedance voltage, signal output from this unit is less susceptible to noise pick-up. Also, shunt capacitance of the cable connecting model 2771C-XX to the main signal conditioner does not significantly affect system noise or sensitivity. It can also support TEDS (per IEEE P1451.4) for smart sensor and larger channel count applications, and includes an available M1 Version with male BNC to facilitate easy panel mounting. The RCC is designed for direct compatibility with both Endevco® and other industry piezoelectric charge output accelerometers.

Acoustic measurements

New Endevco® Low-Profile Surface Microphone with Integral ISOTRON® Amplifier and TEDS

Meggitt Sensing Systems has announced the new market introduction of the Endevco® model EM40PS, a low-profile surface microphone with integral ISOTRON® (IEPE-type) amplifier and TEDS, designed to facilitate simplified larger channel count acoustic measurements on typical planar and curved surfaces exposed to air slipstreams.

The robust design of model EM40PS requires no microphone holders or stands, and incorporates a dust-free, water-repellant grid cap and a lightweight, detachable silicon rubber fairing, allowing for near-flush mounting on curvilinear surfaces and mounting pads. Models also include an integral 3.3 ft (1 m) coaxial cable with microdot connector. Units offer a nominal sensitivity of 5 mV/Pa (@ 250 Hz), wide audio frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and large dynamic range from <30 dBA to 136 dB over an operating temperature range of -20ºC to +80ºC (-4ºF to +176ºF) with low sensitivity to base bending. Because of its lightness, the EM40PS contributes very little mass to thin plates, and can be laid flat on its 2” (51mm) diameter rubber pad, or surface mounted using a double-sided adhesive pad for automotive, aeronautical, general acoustics and sound pressure level testing requirements. Pressure equalization is via a vent placed at the front of the microphone by the side of its diaphragm, important for both aircraft usage and on-road vehicle measurements in mountainous country. Close manufacturing tolerances and the advantages of TEDS enable the microphone to offer a high degree of interchangeability, precluding the need for accounting of individual characteristics.

Meggitt Sensing Systems has announced the global market launch of Endevco® model 7290E, a high-precision variable capacitance accelerometer with integral digital temperature compensation, designed for accurate measurement of low-frequency events and offering best-in-class thermal zero shift and sensitivity shift performance.

Available in seven different models, ranging from 2 to 150 g, the model 7290E incorporates a patented variable capacitive sensing element (US patent numbers 4,574,327; 4,609,968; and 4,999,735), with gas damping and internal over-range stops, which enable the transducer to withstand high shock and acceleration loads. Available in a wide range of excitation voltages and choice of either differential or single ended output, as well as cable length, Endevco® model 7290E offers +0.2% FSO typical non-linearity and hysteresis for most ranges, with superior frequency response, enabling the sensor to provide the highest level of measurement accuracy available on the market today, In addition, the Endevco® model 7290E is covered by a five-year comprehensive product warranty.

With its exceptional bandwidth, precision accuracy and high shock survivability, the Endevco® model 7290E is ideal for use in aircraft flight and flutter testing, automotive rough road body motion studies, suspension systems tests, railroad testing and train tilt control, centrifugal force, launch loading and acceleration, and short-term navigation. Recommended accessories for use with model 7290E include Endevco® model 136 signal conditioner and the model 7990 triaxial mounting block.

Endevco are exhibiting at Britain's leading instrumentation event Advanced Manufacturing UK in April.
