Titanium-housed for US flow meters.

The Daniel™ T-200 is a titanium-housed transducer, for Emerson's gas ultrasonic flow meter product line, marking the first use of metal 3D printing to enhance the acoustic performance of ultrasonic flow meters in custody transfer applications. The T-200’s robust design provides increased reliability, uptime and safety while achieving the highest accuracy class attainable in gas measurement.

In an ultrasonic flow meter, transducers generate acoustic signals that are sent back and forth across the fluid stream. The difference in the transit times of these signals is used to determine the fluid flow velocity. Signal quality and strength are critical to measurement accuracy, which is paramount in custody transfer applications. An error of only 0.1% can equate to hundreds of thousands of euros annually in a large diameter high pressure pipeline.

“The T200’s mini-horn array could not be made without metal 3D printing technology, making it transformational to the sound quality and performance achievable through a titanium barrier,” said Kerry Groeschel, director of ultrasonic technology, Emerson. “Emerson is committed to developing innovative solutions that help our customers achieve safer, more efficient operations.”

The meter’s all-metal housing provides a barrier from corrosive hydrocarbon fluids and wet gas, thereby extending the life of transducer components and ensuring stable performance. This unique design allows the meter to be hydrotested with transducers in place, steam cleaned while in the operating line and blown down with no limits on the rate at which the meter can be depressurised.

The T-200 can also be safely extracted while the meter is under pressure without special high-pressure extraction tools, which reduces the possibility of greenhouse gas emissions during extraction. The capsule which contains the piezoelectric crystal used to produce ultrasonic sound waves is retractable as a single piece for simplicity and ease of use.

The new design is rated for a wide range of operating conditions, including pressures from 1 bar gauge (barg)/103 Kilopascal (kPa) to 255 barg/25,855 kPa and temperatures from -50 to 125 degrees Celsius.

Enhancing truck and railcar loading.

New Turnkey Flow Measurement Solution Enhances Truck and Railcar Loading Operations

Emerson now offers a MID-certified, turnkey flow measurement solution in Europe that enhances truck and railcar loading operations by improving measurement accuracy and traceability, increasing loading bay availability, and reducing operating costs. The new solution addresses custody transfer applications for downstream terminals, refineries, LNG plants and chemical plants, where accurate and reliable measurement of all product transfers is essential. It is also intended to help these operations achieve Top Quartile performance, or performance metrics within the top 25 percent of peer companies.

The solution features accurate and reliable technologies that not only assure measurement accuracy but also help operators increase availability by minimising downtime. The assembly’s compact and modular design also significantly reduces engineering complexity as well as commissioning and installation time for new loading platforms and simplifies upgrades to existing loading installations.

The Emerson module uses Micro Motion™ Coriolis flow meters to provide highly accurate, stable and repeatable measurement of mass and volume flow and density. Rosemount™ transmitters measure pressure and temperature, and an Emerson preset batch controller manages the loading of hydrocarbon liquids into the trucks and railcars, and automatically controls a Daniel™ control valve for low flow start-up, high flow rate control, low flow shutdown and final shut-off. A loading arm, an air separator, grounding and overfill protection can be provided to meet application requirements.

“Using Emerson’s flow module to improve loading operations contributes to greater operational efficiency and can help companies achieve Top Quartile performance,” said Thomas Sautier, flow solutions product manager for Emerson’s Automation Solutions business. “At a typical bay where 20 trucks per day are loaded, the accuracy improvement of flow measurements with Coriolis technology compared with mechanical meters can help to save more than €50,000 in financial imbalance risk per year.”

With a volume flow rate accuracy of up to 0.05% for liquids, the Micro Motion ELITE® CMF-Series Coriolis meters reduce measurement uncertainty and can improve the accuracy of the truck load by up to 150 litres.

The assembly supports implementation of Industrial Internet of Things strategies with digital intelligence and powerful analytical software embedded in the Coriolis flow meters. The flow meters offer smart diagnostics, accessible via a range of digital communications, providing an online health status of the device and process that is available on demand, either on-site or remotely, without interrupting loading operations.

The assembly has been developed in compliance with the requirements of both the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).

Accurate Flow Measurement for Natural Gas Custody Transfer.

Reduce installation costs by accommodating compact piping designs while providing superior measurement accuracy in custody transfer applications.

Emerson has introduced the Daniel 3418 Eight-Path Gas Ultrasonic Flow Meter, which delivers highly accurate flow measurement in natural gas custody transfer applications with reduced upstream piping requirements and without flow conditioning. The Daniel 3418 compensates for flow distortions that result from pipe bends, shorter straight runs or smaller design footprints, allowing it to operate in more design configurations without sacrificing accuracy and long-term performance.

“The addition of this new model further supports our customers with the most technologically advanced fiscal measurement ultrasonic portfolio in the marketplace, yielding the highest level of measurement confidence available,” said Lonna Dickenson, director of product marketing for Daniel ultrasonic flow meter products at Emerson.

It is the first ultrasonic flow meter to pass all perturbation tests for OIML R-137 Accuracy Class 0.5 with only five pipe diameters in front of the meter and without a flow conditioner.  It features eight interlocked direct chordal paths, positioned as two British Gas path layouts where the second is the mirror image of the first, allowing the meter to cancel out asymmetrical velocity effects. This design enables the meter to measure flow with greater resolution and accurately calculate swirl, reducing the need for flow conditioning and long upstream piping configurations.

As a part of the Daniel Gas Ultrasonic product line, the 3418 features the ability to calculate standard flow and directly integrate with temperature and pressure transmitters, gas chromatographs and flow computers while providing real-time meter and process diagnostics. The 3418 uses Emerson’s proprietary MeterLink diagnostic software with specific enhancements designed to mimic the look and feel of the original Daniel four-path gas ultrasonic meter interface.

Available in sizes DN250 to DN1050 (10 in to 42 in), the Daniel 3418 offers bidirectional flow capabilities, increased flow capacity and no incremental pressure drop, therefore reducing measurement risk and minimising operating cost.

Industry’s first Technology Qualification certificate for fiscal metering.

Emerson’s Daniel 3415 and 3416 Dual-Configuration Gas Ultrasonic Meters have received the industry’s first Technology Qualification (TQ) from DNV GL for fiscal gas meters, a risk-based assessment that evaluates meter performance in real-life operational environments to ensure the technology meets the highest fiscal measurement standards.

“Current international gas measurement standards for fiscal flow meters focus only on the design and installation of the meters and don’t cover meter performance under field conditions,” said DNV GL’s oil and gas senior vice president, Liv Hovem“DNV GL’s TQ puts meter performance claims to the test and provides evidence of the impact of actual operating conditions on meter health and measurement accuracy of gas sales. This evidence helps metering system operators mitigate financial risk and improve the reliability of their metering stations in satisfying fiscal and custody transfer contractual agreements.”

The TQ verifies the meter’s ability to meet the industry’s fiscal and contractual requirements when operating under field conditions where dust, liquids, build-up, drift and pulsations are common. It also authenticates the ability of the meter’s advanced diagnostics to detect and compensate for process disturbances and provide early warning of fouling to ensure greater meter integrity and measurement accuracy. Furthermore, the TQ confirms the robustness and reliability of the new Daniel Ultrasonic Meters in minimising financial risk and provides evidence to support extending calibration intervals to reduce operating costs.

The Daniel Dual-Configuration 3415 and 3416 Gas Ultrasonic Meters, which are already certified to the stringent OIML R137 1&2 Accuracy Class 0.5, are the only ultrasonic meters on the market today that have undergone DNV GL’s rigorous field testing and demonstrated field robustness. The DNV GL assessment process is built upon scientific research and is recognised by regulators, insurers, and major clients throughout the world. The process is widely accepted and applied to new fit-for-purpose technologies.

Gas ultrasonic flow meters.

A new Daniel gas ultrasonic flow meter platform has been released by Emerson. It elevates its well-proven British Gas design by providing two meters and transmitters in a single body to help natural gas operators and pipelines improve reliability and efficiency.

Designed to maximise capital budgets by permitting two completely independent measurements with the installation of just a single flowmeter, the new 3415 (four-path + one-path) and 3416 (four-path + two-path) gas ultrasonic flow meters combine a four-path fiscal meter with an additional check meter, while the new 3417 (four-path + four-path) meter provides two fiscal meters for full redundancy and equal accuracy within one meter body. This two-in-one redundant design delivers continuous on-line verification of custody transfer measurement integrity, device health and process conditions, and improves fiscal metering confidence while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Both Daniel 3415 and 3416 gas ultrasonic meters measure flow using four horizontal chordal paths in addition to a reflective path dedicated to verification of the primary measurement, enabling improved metering insight, more informed decision making and simplified flow meter verification. For enhanced immunity to pipe wall contamination, the 3416 meter is equipped with an additional vertical reflective path to detect liquid or very thin layers of contamination at the bottom of the meter that otherwise remain completely hidden in a direct-path meter design. This allows reliable monitoring of process changes before they affect measurement, thus reducing calibration frequency and enabling maintenance to be condition-based instead of calendar-based.

To further improve reliability and uptime in particularly demanding custody transfer applications, users can leverage the Daniel 3417 gas ultrasonic meter with its unique dual-plane configuration that combines two independent four-path British Gas fiscal meters into one meter body. The configuration ensures complete measurement redundancy with two meters of equal accuracy and the ability for each meter to operate independently of the other. This design significantly reduces cost for measurement stations that traditionally utilise two separate meters with their associated piping, calibrations and installations. The 3417 meter is ideal for border stations that are becoming bi-directional, storage applications, remote locations such as offshore platforms or for use on large compressor stations or lines without a bypass.

“Knowing if and when a gas ultrasonic meter has drifted and who is paying for the measurement shift is critically important to our customers’ business,” said Kerry Groeschel, director of engineering of Emerson’s Daniel ultrasonic meters. “Our 3417 meter addresses these needs because it can be used as a shared meter between two contracting parties for a tremendous capital savings or for complete custody transfer backup measurement should maintenance be needed. The 3415 and 3416 also deliver significant advantages, particularly in shale plays, by giving operators greater visibility into gas quality.”

All meters are approved to the more stringent class 0.5 of OIML R137 MID Accuracy. In addition, they feature redundant electronics with a patented transducer synchronisation function that is unique to Daniel gas ultrasonic technology. This function coordinates the acoustic firing of both meters to avoid interference between the two meters, allowing the highest sampling rate possible and providing stable ultrasonic signals and optimal low flow response for a more accurate and reliable measurement.

Furthermore, all meters are equipped with MeterLink™, a fully automated diagnostics software package. MeterLink allows operators access to easy-to-interpret diagnostic information, providing greater visibility to meter performance and product quality as well as alerts that are generated when abnormal operating conditions are detected. Daniel multi-path redundant gas ultrasonic meters provide additional measurement confidence by calculating corrected volume rates, mass and energy rates and real time AGA 10 speed of sound. This ensures a repeatable and accurate flow measurement, even when process conditions vary or differ from calibrated conditions.

Emerson’s Daniel DanPac Express process acquisition control solution deploys rapidly at oil and gas flow metering installations and offers a user-friendly interface to simplify operation

The Daniel Process Acquisition Controller (DanPac) family has been expanded by Emerson to provide a cost-effective measurement and control solution for both fiscal and non-fiscal oil and gas metering applications. With its simplified yet scalable architecture, the new DanPac Express system reduces complexity and initial investment while streamlining future expansions. A complete set of high performance software tools provide visibility to skid systems to reduce measurement uncertainty and facilitate local and remote monitoring.

A robust and easy-to-use software platform maximises uptime and system reliability by giving operators real-time access to critical metering information. Key software features include a powerful fiscal reporting package that combines all key metering parameters to streamline audit trail requirements, a user-friendly operator interface that provides visibility to alarms and events and facilitates access to system data, and an integrated historical trending capability that simplifies customisation of report content and layouts.

Next generation US flowmeters.

The new Daniel™ multi-path gas and liquid ultrasonic meters from Emerson, feature a next-generation electronics platform. The accuracy, line size breadth, and flexibility make the new JuniorSonic™ one-path (3411) or two-path (3412), and SeniorSonic™ four-path (3414) gas ultrasonic meters ideal for a number of flow measurement applications. In addition, the new four-path (3814) liquid ultrasonic meter expands on the functionality and performance of its predecessor, the 3804 liquid ultrasonic meter, to offer improved reliability for custody transfer applications.

Designed for speed, reliability, ease-of-use, and measurement integrity, the new ultrasonic flow meters provide exceptional measurement accuracy and repeatability. With faster flow sampling rates, the new electronics platform significantly increases the data set used to calculate average velocity, allowing rapid recognition of changing flow dynamics. Users will have access to high-volume data capture as well as detailed flow parameters, including pressure, temperature, and gas composition, allowing the meter to act as a redundant flow computer. Improved calculations for auditing or invoice resolution are enabled by the electronics’ ultra-fast delivery of key data from the meter’s audit trail. The audit trail complies with American Petroleum Institute Standard 21.1, and is supported by a standard 128 MB non-volatile memory. Access to alarms, events and configuration changes is provided in a matter of seconds.

Additionally, the meters’ electronics feature a compact circuit board for increased reliability and maintainability, simplifying field removal and reinstallation. The electronics retrofit Daniel legacy ultrasonic meters and are expandable, enabling future upgrades to help meet changing customer needs. The electronics support remote access as well as true 100BaseT Fast Ethernet connectivity to facilitate enterprise-wide communication and integration.

The transducers facilitate troubleshooting by enabling operators to quickly detect and isolate problems, preventing unnecessary depressurisation of the meter.

The new Daniel gas and liquid ultrasonic meters are also equipped with an updated version of MeterLink (v1.20), a configuration and diagnostic software that utilises an intuitive interface to improve overall functionality and ease of use. MeterLink displays abnormal flow profiles, upstream blockage, deposit build-up within the meter, and the existence of liquid hydrocarbon in gas – an invaluable benefit for shale gas applications and new pipelines where remains of hydro test water may still exist. In addition, a guided wizard tool helps configure the meter in the field, decreasing commissioning time and minimising start-up costs and operator error.

US meter for high-accuracy flow measurement for LNG

The new Daniel™ 3818 Liquid Ultrasonic Flow Meter for liquefied natural gas applications is specifically designed for reducing flow measurement uncertainty throughout the LNG value chain. This meter is ideal for many marine and offshore applications, including custody transfer, fiscal metering, line balancing, check metering, allocation measurement and tanker loading and unloading.

Measuring LNG volume dynamically using the 3818 Ultrasonic Meter delivers higher accuracy than static measurement methods and can result in real savings. The 3818 provides a factory-proven linearity within ± 0.15% and a meter factor uncertainty of ± 0.027% due to its sophisticated multi-plane British Gas design, fast signal processing, and advanced transducer technology. Improvements in measurement uncertainty equate to a reduction in risk of the financial transaction. Additional metering points on rundown lines can also improve process control.

Industry forecasts anticipate increasing amounts of LNG will be traded in short-term (spot) contracts. This implies dynamic measurement of delivered product will be required, as is currently the case for custody transfer of oil shipments. In addition, LNG facilities are using shared or commingled storage tanks which require dynamic measurement to quantify and allocate ownership among multiple parties.

With a completely redundant 4-path, multi-plane configuration that is the equivalent of two 4-path meters in a single body, the Daniel 3818 Ultrasonic Meter utilises two independent transmitters - one for each set of four chordal paths. This ensures complete measurement redundancy and the ability to poll each 4-path meter separately. Acoustic processing is performed by specialised electronics designed to achieve high sampling rates, provide stable ultrasonic signals and optimal low flow response, delivering accurate, stable and reliable measurement.

Each Daniel 3818 Ultrasonic Meter is calibrated at Daniel’s ISO/IEC 17025 certified flow calibration facility using a static zero flow test on liquid nitrogen and a full dynamic test on water. The 3818 is designed to withstand product temperatures ranging from -196°C to +60°C (-385°F to +140°F), making it an ideal choice for a wide variety of challenging cryogenic LNG applications.

The 3818 offers all the advantages of transit time and inline ultrasonic flow meters. They are full-bore meters with no internal moving parts to wear or drift, providing for low pressure drop and minimising the risk of LNG flashing. Also available in large sizes, ultrasonic meters are well suited for high volume LNG transfers which equates to faster tanker loading and offloading.

Gold standard calibration

Emerson Process Management has received certification of accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 from the Laboratory Accreditation Bureau (L-A-B) for its Daniel™ Measurement and Control calibration laboratory located in Houston (TX USA).

This internationally recognised accreditation by L-A-B certifies Emerson’s Houston production facility for calibration on Daniel liquid ultrasonic flow meters and liquid turbine flow meters. Certified meter proving is critical, since metering performance directly affects process manufacturers’ profits in processing and custody transfer metering and acceptance.

The ISO/IEC certification complements Emerson’s established worldwide network of facilities, which are triple certified by ISO standards, including Stirling, UK; Sorocaba, Brazil; and Singapore. The facilities are internationally certified by ISO standards for quality, occupational health and safety, and environmental management systems.

L-A-B is recognised by the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), the Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (APLAC), and the National Cooperation of Laboratory Accreditation (NACLA).

ISO/IEC 17025:2005 is considered the gold standard for calibration activities in accordance with international standards. The accreditation focuses not only on the laboratory's calibration uncertainties, but also on its management system, processes and procedures.

"Most importantly, it helps streamline the customer experience by assuring product performance and integrity."

Ultrasonic meters are frequently used for critical hydrocarbon applications and the turbine meters are used as master meters to calibrate other hydrocarbon meters in the field. The prover is the reference standard against which the meter is calibrated under actual operating conditions. Direct proving allows the meter to be calibrated for any flow changes that affect meter performance and linearity while verifying repeatability, thus satisfying liquid hydrocarbon custody transfer contractual requirements including API or international standards.

Multi-year framework agreement for fiscal metering systems

Emerson to supply Daniel® fiscal metering systems for Statoil’s Valemon (N) platform

Emerson Process Management has been awarded a five year Framework Agreement by Statoil to provide a range of its Daniel® fiscal metering systems, as well as related products and support services. The agreement also covers on-going maintenance of existing systems, plus the supply of new systems for all current and future developments.

“Since opening our Larbert facility in Scotland in 1974, we have supplied a significant number of systems for major North Sea projects such as Troll, Heidrun and Draupner,” said Mark Dutton, Vice President & General Manager for Emerson Process Management’s Daniel Measurement and Control in Europe. “This framework agreement recognises the excellent relationship we have with Statoil, and offers Emerson an exciting opportunity to provide Statoil with fiscal measurement systems and solutions for many years to come.”

In one of the first projects covered by the framework agreement, Emerson will provide a range of integrated fiscal metering systems for Statoil’s new Valemon gas and condensate platform. Located in the North Sea at the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the Valemon development will include ultrasonic metering systems with fully automated controls for the condensate, gas, and HP and LP flare gas. The unmanned platform, which is controlled from the neighbouring Kvitebjørn platform, will begin production in 2014.

To enhance its support for North Sea customers, Emerson is currently renovating its Daniel facility in Stirling, Scotland. Enhancements include a new state-of-the-art training facility, a design development and control panel facility, a service area and a UKAS calibration laboratory for its fiscal metering products. Emerson will also be investing in local resources, which includes hiring local service engineers to improve the range of its Daniel fiscal measurement services available to the Norwegian market.

US meter for high-accuracy liquid measurement for non-costody transfer

High performance Daniel™ 3812 Liquid Ultrasonic Flow Meter with integrated diagnostics package provides accurate flow measurement for a wide spectrum of applications

The new Daniel™ 3812 Liquid Ultrasonic Flow Meter has just been announced by Emerson Process Management.  Designed for reliable measurement, minimal maintenance and ease of operation, this meter is ideal for many applications in the petrochemical, oil, water and wastewater industries.

Innovative electronics combined with advanced digital signal processing make the Daniel 3812 Ultrasonic Flow Meter less sensitive to changes in the flow profile, solids or entrained air, which results in accurate, stable and reliable measurement. This meter can be used to measure liquid products with a high accuracy of ±0.3 per cent and repeatability of ± 0.1 per cent due to sophisticated algorithms and the configuration of its measuring ultrasonic paths. 

The 3812 utilises two mid-radius, parallel-plane measurement paths to reduce the influence of flow disturbances and offers all the advantages of transit time and inline ultrasonic flow meters. Ultrasonic flow measurement is independent of conductivity, temperature, density and pressure.

Within the meter body are four non-wetted, intrinsically safe transducers that allow the meter to maintain high accuracy over widely varying flow conditions.  These transducers are field replaceable without the need to empty or depressurise the meter, reducing maintenance costs and increasing uptime. The unobstructed ultrasonic flow tube with smooth surface finish inhibits material build-up. This combined with no internal moving parts to wear or drift provides for low pressure drop, increased energy savings, and many years of maintenance-free service.

This full bore ultrasonic meter is easy to install and operate. Additional arrangements such as filters, flow strainers, supports, grounding or isolation against vibrations are not necessary. The results are minimal maintenance and substantial savings in the cost of ownership.

An integrated, predictive diagnostics package provides an intuitive view of meter health and status, allows operators access to real-time process conditions and address maintenance alarms before they lead to failure. Advanced diagnostics continuously perform measurement reliability checks and calibrate the time measurement. The meter’s Ethernet compatibility enables multiple users to remotely monitor and verify process information. The Smart Wireless THUM adapter allows wireless access to flow meter diagnostics without the need for any additional wiring. Approval streamlines certification process for measuring system suppliers

European MID approval streamlines certification process for measuring system suppliers

Emerson Process Management's  Daniel® Gas Ultrasonic meter, Liquid Ultrasonic Meter and Liquid Turbine Meters are now certified as meeting the requirements of the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) 2004/22/EC. The MID is a European directive that covers a range of different measuring instruments. The certificate is valid throughout the whole of Europe.

For the measurement of liquids, the MID certification applies to complete measuring systems. Daniel liquid products have evaluation certificates which simplify the process of obtaining a system approval, so suppliers of these systems that have responsibility for MID compliance of a system can save time at the evaluation and certification stage. In addition, Daniel also has the capabilities and experience to take responsibility for overall MID system certification.

For gas measurement products, MID certification applies to individual products and Emerson can provide Daniel CE marked meters to address any customer concerns about MID compliance.

OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety certification

Emerson Process has recently achieved certification to OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety for its Daniel® Europe facility in Stirling, (GB). This complements its existing certification to ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Standard. 

“With some of our customers sub-contracting up to 90 per cent of their labour, they rely on supplier companies to support their environmental and safety standards,” said Mark Dutton, Vice President of Emerson’s Daniel Measurement and Control, Europe. “The OHSAS 18001 accreditation, together with the ISO 14001 environment accreditation, will give confidence that working with us will ensure that these companies achieve their OHSE and environmental goals.”

OHSAS 18001 defines the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system that will enable an organisation to identify and control its OH&S risks and to continually improve its performance in that area. Achieving OHSAS 18001 certification recognises the strengths of Emerson as a supplier that shares the same health and safety standards as its customers.
