Top-selling generators extend to two channels!

Aim-TTi have now launched two channel versions of their best-selling TG2511 and TG5011 function/arbitrary/pulse generators.
The new TG2512A and TG5012A have a maximum frequency of 25MHz and 50MHz respectively and represent excellent value for money when compared to purchasing two generators.

Unlike some other two channel generators, both channels provide the full performance and specification, along with entirely independent operation when required.

The graphic LCD can be switched between the two outputs or can be set to show the parameters or waveforms for both channels simultaneously.

The two channels can be operated completely independently as if they were two separate generators. Alternatively the frequencies of the two channels can be coupled such that if frequency of one channel is changed the frequency of the other channel also changes either by a fixed ratio or fixed offset.

Amplitudes (and DC offsets) of the two channels can be coupled such that changing the amplitude and offset on one channel changes the amplitude and offset of both channels.
Outputs of the two channels can be coupled such that switching the output on/off on one channel switches the output on/off of both channels.

When in tracking mode both channels behave as one channel. If inverse tracking is selected, both channel still behave as one channel except that the output of channel 2 is inverted.

The relative phase can be set from -360 degrees to +360 degrees with 0.1 degree resolution. Pressing the ‘align’ key phase synchronises the two channels with the specified phase offset. Either channel can be triggered by the other channel to set up a complex and versatile inter channel trigger scheme.

Triple output linear PSU provides up to 8 amps

Aim-TTi has extended its PL series of linear regulated laboratory power supplies to include a triple output model, the PL303QMT.

Unlike most triple output PSUs, all three outputs are full performance with CV/CI modes, simultaneous voltage/current metering, and switchable remote sense. Total power is 228 watts.

The PL303QMT has two identical 30V/3A outputs with quad-mode switching which provides independent, tracking and true parallel modes, the latter providing 30V/6A from a single output.

The third output offers 0 to 6V at 0 to 8A, an unusually high current for a linear regulated unit. The resolution for this output is increased from 10mV to 1mV and current resolution of 1mA is maintained up to 8A with a selectable low-current range with 0.1mA resolution.

The unit is compact being 3/4 rack width (320mm) by 3U high (130mm). A rack mount kit is available which can accommodate the PL303QMT alone or in combination with any single output PL or PLH model.

The PL303QMT-P has identical front panel control but adds a full range of digital remote control interfaces including USB, RS232, GPIB and LAN, the latter being LXI compliant.

USB control for bench power supply!

Aim-TTi have updated their EX355P bench power supply to include USB control. It offers a low-cost solution for a basic programmable PSU that is sufficient for many applications where the sophistication and complexity of GPIB is not needed.

Total power is 175 watts with settings of 0 to 35 volts and 0 to 5 amps. Voltage and current levels are set digitally using either the bus interface or the local controls. Setting resolution is 10mV and 10mA. The mixed-mode regulation design, which includes linear final regulation, provides a very low output noise and fast recovery from transients.

A simple command set allows remote control of voltage, current and output enable along with read -back of metering values and operational status. Local control is via three rotary encoders providing rapid and accurate setting of voltage and current during bench use.

The front panel controls can be locked out when required, making the unit particularly useful in

Truly handheld RF spectrum analysers!

Aim-TTi have launched a new series of handheld RF spectrum analysers, the PSA Series II. Available in 1.3GHz and 2.7GHz versions, the new instruments are smaller, lighter and have longer battery life than other handheld RF products.

Whereas a typical “handheld” spectrum analyser weighs over 2kg (4.4lb) and is considerable wider than a hand width, the PSA Series II weighs only 560 grms (20oz) and is just 9.2cm (3.6”) wide, fitting perfectly into the hand.

Despite their small size, the analysers incorporate a 4.3” (11cm) backlit TFT colour display with touch screen. A high capacity rechargeable Li-ion battery gives more than 8 hours operation from a charge.

The PSA1302 has a frequency range of 1MHz to 1300MHz whilst the PSA2702 operates up to 2700MHz. Dynamic range is 80dB with a noise floor approaching -100dBm. Resolution bandwidth is selectable down to 15kHz. Sweep modes include continuous, single, peak hold and sweep average. Sweep parameters can be set in terms of centre plus span or start plus stop to 1kHz resolution. A zero span mode with AM or FM audio demodulation is also provided using a built-in speaker.

Dual markers are incorporated with simultaneous readout of absolute amplitude and frequency plus difference values. Markers can be scrolled manually, or set to automatically find or track peaks. Up to three traces can be displayed (Live, View and Reference) clearly differentiated by colour. Traces or complete screen images can be saved to files.

Advanced features include data logging for traces, data points or screen images. Up to 10,000 entries per file can be stored with triggering from a manual key press, internal timer, external trigger, or the limits comparator. The 1.8GB of internal memory enables many large files to be stored.

Limit lines and limit patterns can be displayed with a full limits comparator enabling audible warnings, output pulses, halting of the trace, or entries into logging files. Compensation tables for antennae or other external transducers can be created and loaded.

The instruments have a full filing system capable of storing up to 1,000 each of traces, screen images, set-ups, logging files, limit patterns or compensation tables under auto incrementing names or user-defined names. USB host and device connectors allow the connection of USB Flash drives or direct connection to a PC.

Control of the analyser is provided by finger operated soft keys created on the touch screen. These form a hierarchical menu system that gives rapid access to the menu functions. Alternatively, all functions can be operated using the hard keys alone.

The ruggedised casing incorporates rubber protection buffer and includes a bench stand and screen protector. For bench-top use, the instrument can be operated continuously from its AC charger. For portable use, the long battery life of eight hours can be further extended by selecting auto-off which turns the instrument off after a delay of 5 to 60 mins. from the last key press whilst retaining all data.

The PSA Series II will offer RF service engineers a cost effective and highly portable tool that will make it practical to a carry a spectrum analyser to areas that have traditionally been difficult to access with bench top instruments and not cost effective when using existing portable products offered by other manufacturers. This can reduce the need for a return visit when it is suspected that a spectrum analyzer is required.

Other engineers working on the bench will appreciate the low cost of the products enabling them to justify the purchase of an RF spectrum analyzer for tasks where the cost would have been previously been difficult to justify.

Frequency counter

Low-cost Frequency Counter extends to 6GHz

Aim-TTi has added a 6GHz version of their best selling TF900 series of bench/portable frequency counters. The TF960 has a TCXO timebase, can measure and count between 0.001Hz and 6000MHz, and incorporates a USB control interface.

The TF960 can measure frequency, period, pulse width, duty cycle and frequency ratio, as well as event counting (totalise). For frequency, period and ratio functions the instrument uses a reciprocal counting technique to provide high resolution at all frequencies. Eight significant digits of answer are produced in a 1 second measurement time, nine digits in 10s and ten digits in 100s with a granularity of less than 2 counts in the least significant digit.

The new counter has a frequency range from 0.001Hz to over 6000MHz with high sensitivity across the range. The high quality TCXO timebase is stable to within ±1ppm over the full temperature range and provides a low ageing rate. Its short warm-up time allows accurate measurements to be made even under portable battery powered conditions.

For frequencies up to 125MHz the input is configurable as 1M Ohm or 50 Ohm impedance, AC or DC coupling, and 1:1 or 5:1 attenuation. The threshold is fully variable and the active edge can be positive or negative. Two high frequency inputs cover a range of 80MHz to >3GHz and 2GHz to >6GHz, the latter input being via an N connector.

The counter incorporates a USB interface which allows it to be remotely controlled via a computer’s USB port as well as providing readback.

The TF960 operates from internal rechargeable NiMH batteries which give typically 24 hours operating life. The universal AC charger supplied will recharge the batteries in less than 4 hours and can be used for continuous AC operation. The instrument can also be powered from a standard USB port.

Basic analog function generator offers high waveform quality

Aim-TTi has extended their TG300 series of low cost analog function generators by adding a model with vernier-dial setting of frequency. The TG310 is the most basic generator in the range and lacks the digital display of frequency and level that is included on other models.

The generator can produce sine, square, triangle, pulse and ramp waveforms from 0.03Hz up to 3MHz. Variable bi-directional symmetry with constant frequency is provided over a ten to one range. An external sweep input allows the frequency on each range to be varied by at least 1000:1.

The TG310 provides a main output with a maximum emf of 20V pk-pk from a 50 Ohms or 600 Ohms source. An amplitude vernier with a range of 20dB is combined with two switched attenuators of -20dB and -40dB to provide levels down to 2mV pk-pk un-terminated.
Unlike some other lower cost function generators, high waveform quality is maintained down to very low levels with minimal noise and waveform aberrations.

Variable DC offset of +/-10V is available via a centre detent control. An auxiliary output provides a fixed 0V to +5V level suitable for driving both TTL and CMOS loads

Precision power supplies offer wider programmability

Aim-TTi has revised their QL series high precision laboratory power supplies to add new features and extra models. The QL Series II incorporates new functions, higher output power, and enhanced bus interfacing.

The new PSUs retain the true linear regulation of their predecessors and offer extremely low noise of less than 350 microvolts. Output power is up to 112 watts per output and includes a dual range capability which provides higher current capability at lower voltages.

Setting memories have been extended enabling quicker recall of stored sequences, and operating security has been enhanced by adding keypad locking. All QL-P models now incorporate a LAN (Ethernet) interface in addition to USB, RS232 and GPIB. The interface is fully conformant with LXI (LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation).

Triple output models now have fully variable voltage on the auxiliary output with an increased current capability of 3 amps. Voltage can be set between 1V and 6V with a resolution of 0.01V and voltage and current can be viewed at the touch of a button. QL-TP models have extended bus control of the auxiliary output including programmable voltage and read-back of voltage and current.

The QL Series II incorporates eight models with one or three outputs and power ranging from 105 watts up to 242 watts.

New RF signal generator

The new TGR6000 RF signal generator from Aim-TTi is capable of sweeping from 10 MHz to 6000 MHz in a single range.

The generator has several sweep modes including step sweep and list sweep. In step sweep, the frequency and/or amplitude are stepped between two fixed points using up to 1000 steps which can have a fixed time period or a triggered interval. Sweeps can be linear or logarithmic, up or down.

In list sweep, frequency and amplitude points are defined within a table enabling any sweep pattern to be used. Dwell times are fully adjustable down to 10 ms.

The TGR6000 covers a frequency range of 10 MHz to 6000 MHz at an output level of between -110 dBm and +7 dBm, adjustable in 0.1 dB steps. The frequency resolution is 10 Hz, and the internal timebase stability is better than one part in 10^6. An external reference can be used for higher accuracy.

It is is intended for CW signal applications and has no built-in modulations.

Full digital remote control facilities are provided through the GPIB, RS232, USB, and LAN (Ethernet) interfaces.

Laboratory PSU

Aim-TTi has introduced a lower-cost version of the company’s best-selling QPX1200 series laboratory power supply. The new model is designated QPX1200S and is intended for applications where digital remote control is not needed.

The QPX1200S has a maximum power of 1200 W and features PowerFlex regulation. This enables it to offer voltage and current combinations between 60 V / 20 A and 20 V / 50 A, making it suitable for a very wide range of applications.

A linear output stage is included within the PowerFlex regulator. This gives it a low output noise of less than 3 mV RMS and a transient recovery time typically ten times better than that of conventional switch-mode units.

Setting of voltage and current is fully digitally controlled via keypad or “spin wheel” controls using instrumentation-quality 16-bit digital/analogue converters. A quasi-analogue interface is also included which provides zero to full-scale voltage or current from 0 to 5 V or 0 to 10 V inputs.

An unusual feature of the QPX1200S is its ability to directly measure low resistance by calculating the voltage/current ratio. This enables very low impedances to be measured at high currents, eliminating the potential thermal EMF errors inherent in low-current measurements.

Unlike many higher-power laboratory power supplies, the QPX1200S is suited to bench or rack-mount applications. Output and sense terminals are provided on both the front and rear panels. The case has integral tilt feet, and a 3U rack mount is available as an option.

New type of probe measures current in PCB tracks directly

Aim-TTi has launched an entirely new type of current probe which is cable of measuring currents in PCB tracks.

The Aim I-prober 520 positional current probe uses a patented technology to observe and measure current without the need to break or surround the conductor.

Measurement of current normally requires either the insertion of a shunt resistor, or for the conductor to be passed through a closed magnetic loop. Typically this is done using some form of split clamp device. Whereas this is suitable for individual wires, it is of no use for measuring current in PCB tracks.

The I-prober 520 is a compact hand-held probe which is used with an oscilloscope. By placing the insulated tip of the probe onto a PCB track, the current flowing in the track can be observed and measured.

The probe has a bandwidth of DC to 5 MHz and a dynamic range of 10 mA to 20 A peak to peak. It is safety rated to 300 V Cat II (600 V Cat I) and is suitable for connection to any oscilloscope.

The Aim I-prober 520 operates by sensing the field in very close proximity to the track. To achieve a calibrated measurement, the field sensor must be capable of maintaining a precise distance from the track. To achieve good sensitivity this distance must be very small because field reduces with the square of distance (to a first-order approximation).

To create a practical current measurement probe, a very special type of miniaturised sensor was needed. The requirements included very small size with precision dimensions, DC sensing capability, wide AC bandwidth, and low noise. None of the existing sensor technologies used within field and current probes was suitable for this.

Instead, the I-prober 520 uses a patented miniaturised version of a fluxgate magnetometer, developed in conjunction with Cambridge University. It is the patented miniaturisation that enables it to measure the field at a precise point in space. In addition, the miniature sensor has much lower noise and much wider bandwidth than a conventional fluxgate magnetometer.

As well as measuring currents in PCB tracks, the probe can be used on component leads or any other current-carrying conductor. An interesting example occurs in ground planes, where it can be used to observe circulating currents, interference injection points and “hot spots” in order to optimise design.

The Aim I-prober 520 is supplied with a control box and calibrator, power supply, and a clip-on toroid assembly which can convert it into a convention closed magnetic loop current probe.

Power supply series extended

Aim-TTi has extended its best-selling CPX400 series of PowerFlex regulated laboratory power supplies to include single-output models.

The CPX400S is a 420 W power-supply unit with extremely compact dimensions, being only 107 mm wide (quarter rack width). Maximum output voltage is 60 V and maximum current 20 A subject to the 420 W power limit envelope. Range control buttons allow it to be configured as full PowerFlex, fixed range 60 V/7 A or 20 V/20 A, or any user-selected voltage/current combination.

The power supply uses true analogue controls, but incorporates an S-Lock function which transfers control of voltage and current from the analogue controls to internal digital circuitry for stability and safety.

The CPX400SP adds a full range of digital control interfaces for remote-control applications, along with duplicate power and sense terminals on the rear panel. RS-232, USB, GPIB and LAN (Ethernet) interfaces are all provided as standard. The LAN interface is compliant with LXI (LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation).

As well as using minimum space in bench-top applications, these units offer high density for rack-mount use. Up to four single- or two dual-output units, or a combination of both, can be fitted into a single rack width.

Signal generator

Aim-TTi has launched a new 6 GHz RF signal generator which is priced at less than half that of the lowest cost 6 GHz generators available previously.

The TGR6000 covers a frequency range from 10 MHz to 6000 MHz at an output level of between -110 dBm and +7 dBm adjustable in 0.1 dB steps. The frequency resolution is 10 Hz and the internal timebase stability is better than 1 ppm.

The generator offers low phase noise, residual FM and spurious signal responses. An external reference can be used where higher accuracy is required. User level compensation tables can be loaded in order to calibrate an entire test setup.

The TGR6000 is intended for CW signal applications and has no built-in modulation capability. However, a sweep generation system is included that covers the full frequency range and incorporates a sophisticated step or list sweep covering both frequency and amplitude.

In step sweep, the frequency and/or amplitude are stepped between two fixed points using up to 1000 steps which can have a fixed time period or a triggered interval. Sweeps can be linear or logarithmic, up or down. In list sweep, frequency and amplitude points are defined within a table, enabling any sweep pattern to be used.

Full digital remote-control facilities are available through the RS232, USB and LAN (Ethernet) interfaces. An additional GPIB interface is optionally available.

Frequency counter

Low-cost 3 GHz frequency counter has TCXO timebase
The TF930 3 GHz low-cost universal frequency counter from Aim-TTi now incorporates a TCXO (temperature-controlled crystal oscillator) timebase, giving it a stability within ±1 ppm over its full operating temperature range, combined with a low aging rate.

The counter can measure frequency, period, pulse width, duty cycle and frequency ratio, as well as event counting (totalise). For frequency, period and ratio functions, the instrument uses a reciprocal counting technique to provide high resolution at all frequencies. Eight significant digits of reading are produced in a one-second measurement time, nine digits in 10 sec and ten digits in 100 sec, with a granularity of less than two counts in the least significant digit.

The overall frequency range is from 0.001 Hz to over 3000 MHz, with high sensitivity across the range. For frequencies up to 125 MHz the input is configurable as 1 megohm or 50 ohm impedance, AC or DC coupling, and 1:1 or 5:1 attenuation. The threshold is fully variable, and the active edge can be positive or negative.

The TF930 incorporates a USB interface which allows it to be remotely controlled via a computer’s USB port. It operates from internal rechargeable NiMH batteries, which give typically 24 hours operating life. The universal AC charger supplied will recharge the batteries in less than 4 hours, and can be used for continuous AC operation. The instrument can also be powered from a standard USB port.
