Yokogawa's WEBFREX3ES online thickness gauge is included with Faustel’s battery electrode coating lines. The gauge is used to monitor the thickness of the coatings on the electrodes that are main components of lithium-ion batteries.
“As the performance of lithium-ion batteries improves and their production volumes increase, the specifications for measuring the thickness of electrode materials also change,” said Jay Totten, Technology Center Manager at Faustel. “Thickness gauges must now operate faster than ever as electrode manufacturers strive to speed up production lines and improve production efficiency to meet growing demand.”
Modern lithium-ion batteries contain metal foil bases for the anode and cathode, which are thinly and uniformly coated with an electrode coating. The WEBFREX3ES gauge specifications are optimized to measure the thickness of electrode coatings directly on the coating line. Gauges can be installed wherever required, such as between coating machines. The WEBREX3ES’s compact frame allows it to be installed in tight spaces often found in battery electrode production facilities.
System Configuration
WEBFREX3ES consists of up to five frames, which accommodate a Beta-ray type sensor, a measurement manager station to generate coat weight profiles, operator stations, and a profile stack server. The system is equipped with various functions provided for the battery electrode process, including high-speed and high-precision synchronization scanning, automatic identification of coated or non-coated parts, zone trend panel, profile data tracking and a material coefficient window. All major components are originally developed and manufactured at Yokogawa factories under the high quality control policy proven by their highly reliable DCS and field instruments.
