Radar level.

Non-contact measuring method for challenging media and mounting situations.

WIKA has expanded its level measurement portfolio with the addition of the ILT radar sensor. This free-beam sensor enables non-contact level measurement – even through the walls of plastic containers.

Its compact design makes the ILT particularly suitable for applications where space is limited. Manufacturers can, for example, install the sensor in mobile working machines or heating systems. Furthermore, non-contact technology enables high-precision measurement of the level of particle-containing, highly viscous or solid materials. Possible applications range from wastewater plants to all types of raw material containers and fuels.

The ILT-C01 version is designed for a temperature range of -40 ... +100 °C [-40 ... +212 °F], while the ILT-C05 version also covers high temperatures up to 150 °C [302 °F]. Metal shielding protects the sensor from interference caused by electrical fields in the environment. The instrument operates reliably even under adverse conditions such as dust, moisture and heat, and can tolerate vibrations and shocks of up to 100g. With up to two additional switch points, further switching outputs can be integrated, for example for overflow or dry run protection. Last but not least, the radar sensor ensures low operating costs, as it is maintenance-free thanks to its non-contact measuring principle and wear-free design.

Customised versions of the ILT, tailored precisely to specific requirements, are also available.

Easy-to-operate level measuring devices.

A new generation of Micropilot 80 GHz radar sensors: FMR60B, FMR62B, FMR63B, FMR66B and FMR67B has been launched by Endress+Hauser. The new generation provides solutions across all industries and applications. The sensors are suited for challenges when measuring points aren’t easily accessible, located in dusty areas and harsh environments with extreme process temperatures and process conditions.

The new generation of sensors come equipped with wizards which operate via multiple HMI formats, including the SmartBlue app, and make the sensors easier to use. Besides tried-and-tested digital communication protocols like HART, other digital protocols such as Profibus and Ethernet/APL will be included in the near future. The exceptional measurement performance of the new radar chip combined with the smart Heartbeat Technology monitoring function helps to increase productivity. The new Micropilot generation offers solutions that make individual customer processes simpler, safer and more productive.

Simple in every respect.
The range of new-generation 80 GHz radar sensors for level measurement provides solutions for virtually any radar application. Thanks to the compact device design, it can be used in confined installation situations. Suitable versions are also available for challenging process conditions such as aggressive media or extreme temperatures.

Commissioning and operation of the radar devices are straightforward and intuitive. Users are guided through the process by integrated assistants (wizards), thus preventing errors and enabling the devices to be successfully commissioned with limited experience or training. Thanks to a Bluetooth interface, the devices can be conveniently controlled remotely via the SmartBlue app from Endress+Hauser. In conjunction with Heartbeat Technology, processes can thus be monitored continuously, and verifications performed in less than three minutes while the process is running.

The HistoROM mobile data memory transfers measuring point parameters without error when the electronics are replaced. The device is repaired quickly and smoothly without requiring specialized user knowledge.

Maximum safety for staff, plants and processes.
Systematic errors, unintentional operating errors and process anomalies all pose risks to plant safety. The new Micropilot radar family meets all safety requirements. It has been developed following IEC 61508 using Endress+Hauser's 20 years of SIL expertise and can be used in SIL2 or SIL3 applications with homogeneous redundancy.

Instrument-led sequences also guide the user step by step through commissioning, parameter configuration or SIL proof testing, thus preventing systematic errors and increasing safety. As a result of the existing Buetooth interface, function checks or changes to settings can always be performed remotely from outside the danger zone via the SmartBlue app. The innovative communication option, Ethernet-APL, also allows the device to be monitored and operated for the first time via an integrated web server. The new color display also ensures safety at a glance by changing from green to red in the event of an error, thus providing a quick status overview.

Another function that eliminates systematic errors is the automatically generated checksum (CRC), generated from all the safety-related parameters and noted in the test report. Changes to an individual parameter can thus be identified from the checksum, making it possible to see immediately if a parameter has been changed and thus significantly speeding up inspections.

Increased efficiency and exceptional measurement performance.
The new 80 GHz electronics utilized in the FMR6xB was developed in-house and provides exceptional measurement performance. In addition to the measurement performance, Heartbeat Technology developed by Endress+Hauser enables productivity gains. It provides reliable diagnostic and monitoring data and enables predictive maintenance thanks to its constant monitoring of anomalies such as foam or buildup.

Device verifications can be performed in less than three minutes without removing the device or interrupting the process. The patented radar accuracy index (RAI) combined with Heartbeat Verification now enables traceable verification according to DIN ISO 9001 for the first time, resulting in a considerable reduction in the effort and costs associated with calibration and documentation and significantly extending calibration cycles.

Thanks to easy integration into asset management systems and smart self-diagnostics, unplanned plant shutdowns are largely avoided and production output increases.

Radar system detects filling levels.

The radar experts at InnoSenT GmbH have developed a new system for focused distance measurement. The iSYS-6030 is the new edition of the successful iSYS-6003 filling-level radar. The product update is more economical, faster, and more accurate than its predecessor. The sensor’s features are adapted to the application of filling-level measurement and collision avoidance. The technical enhancements also extend the scope of applications.

Using contactless radar detection, the product accurately detects the filling level of a manufacturing or storage container. The iSYS-6030 radar system sporadically determines the distance between the sensor and an object’s surface. Thanks to its narrow antenna orientation, the product has a focused radar beam for high-precision measurements.

The iSYS-6030 detects a wide variety of materials regardless of their properties and reflection characteristics: Whether cohesive or coarse bulk materials, fine powder, granulate, slow-flowing liquids, or viscous pastes, the system detects any of these materials precisely thanks to its 60 GHz radar technology.

The new product handles the measurement of filling levels even in challenging indoor and outdoor measuring environments. Extreme temperatures, dust, fog, steam, formation of foam, vibrations, or pressure do not impede radar detection. Due to its focused field of view of 6° in azimuth and elevation, the system is also suitable for use in narrow vessels, asymmetrical special structures, or containers with internal mixing systems installed. The iSYS-6030 also provides reliable measurement results in this area by means of sporadic radar detection.

The robust technology is not susceptible to interference due to aggressive filling materials, harsh work environments, or dirt. No regular maintenance is necessary. This makes the product well-suited for use in many different sectors, such as the water, energy, construction materials, food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and environmental technology industries.

While the predecessor product was primarily focused on determining filling levels, the iSYS-6030 boasts a further area of application: thanks to its continuous and reliable distance monitoring, the system is ideally suited for collision protection.

Thanks to technical optimisation, the new product enables faster measuring cycles. The system is booted up and ready to collect data within 90 ms. The update rate in single-target mode is only 20 ms. This enables intervals to be monitored in real time and timely warnings in the event of an impending collision.

In another application, the radar helps to initiate safety measures such as speed reduction when a predefined zone is reached. The user defines the zone individually using the distance information. The iSYS-6030 radar system provides information on when the safety distance is neared or the zone is reached.

Integrating such a system proves beneficial not only with semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles, but also for controlling complex systems. The radar system continuously collects accurate measurement data. These are useful in maintaining minimum distances and precise positioning. At port facilities, this enables a distance between cranes, transport units, buildings, or containers to thus be determined on site with millimetre precision.

The iSYS-6030 radar system operates in the frequency band from 57 to 64 GHz. The sensor is compact and equipped with a signal-processing unit and a dome-shaped radome. The radar component can thus be easily integrated into end products or customer housings. The measurement data (signal strength and distance) are provided as a target list via a UART interface. The maximum range is 40 metres.

Customers choose between two detection variants, depending on the application: single-target and multi-target mode. This way, the system measures the distance to the object surface either at a single point or at different points within the detection area. The radar distinguishes between two targets with the same radar cross-section with a resolution of 12 cm.

The low deviation rate of ±0.1% ensures outstanding precision even with increasing distance between the object and the sensor. The system can be operated in a temperature range of -40 to +85° C.

Since the new system has the same structural design, it can directly replace the old iSYS-6003 product version and offers useful enhancements to existing customers.

‘We have made significant progress in radar development in recent years. In addition, we have learned quite a bit about our customers’ needs through the practical use of our filling-level radar. We thus decided to optimise the system’, explains Product Manager Dr Eva Buchkremer regarding the product update, and she adds:

‘Compared to its predecessor, the iSYS-6030 is more energy-efficient and accurate, longer-range and faster. We thus provide our customers with greater flexibility in using the product. We also offer more customisation options. Its technical features make the new system the ideal radar solution in industry for avoiding collisions and measuring filling levels.’

Using the user manual and the API software protocol, the customer adapts the radar detection to their intended purpose. For example, they can limit the range or use the signal strength setting as a filter. In addition, customers have the option of configuring the effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) in 1 dBm increments, for example in order to comply with technical limits required for approval purposes.

The system also has four digitally, freely assignable and programmable outputs. These enable simple control tasks and can be used as targeted signal triggers. For easy integration and configuration of the sensor, InnoSenT also provides an evaluation kit with a GUI.

Simple radar level set-up.

Emerson has added the Radar Master app for the AMS Trex™ Device Communicator, making it easier for field technicians to safely and efficiently configure Rosemount™ radar level transmitters. Radar level devices are critical to help deliver accurate, reliable measurements on both liquid and solid materials. The new app allows users to easily bring the radar configuration tools of Radar Master software to the field.

“Now, Radar Master users can leave their laptops behind when they go to the field and more easily achieve accurate, reliable configuration even in hazardous locations by using the AMS Trex,” said Anna Olander, general manager for process radar at Emerson.

Radar level devices in the field are typically mounted in high, hard-to-reach locations that sometimes do not have onsite power. Technicians hoping to configure these devices typically carry cumbersome laptops and device power sources into the field to perform configuration. The AMS Trex Device Communicator solves these problems by enabling technicians to carry a handheld communicator that is capable of both configuring and powering radar devices via the Radar Master app.

Dynamic graphics and an intuitive touchscreen interface in the Radar Master app help ensure that users can more quickly configure tank measurement devices with the correct settings. Tank geometry is drawn to match the physical parameters of the actual tank, allowing technicians to more easily tune measurement settings to prevent false echoes from static objects in the tank such as ladder rungs, agitator blades, and baffles, which can delay the process of obtaining accurate measurements.

The compact design of the AMS Trex communicator is ideal for working in the small, and often hazardous, environment of a tank. One-handed operation, NFC-enabled user security, and intrinsic safety ratings enable technicians to work safely and effectively in these difficult areas.

Users can track, view, and trend tank level and alert information to identify issues and aid troubleshooting by using the new built-in historian. Technicians can also view and compare snapshots of past configuration data in a timeline, giving better insight to operational impact of changes.

Every configuration change made in the field is automatically recorded and time-stamped, providing an automated audit trail. Changes are updated to the AMS Device Manager database whenever the AMS Trex device detects a Wi-Fi signal or USB connection to ensure database accuracy and measurement data integrity.

A first in wireless radar level transmitters!

High-performance version of Rosemount™ 3308 GWR Wireless Level Transmitter delivers enhanced accuracy that can be verified without opening the thief hatch, thereby increasing safety

A high-performance version of the Rosemount™ 3308 Guided Wave Radar (GWR) Wireless Level Transmitter has been introduced by Emerson.  It the first standalone wireless radar level device to comply with the API 18.2 standard that provides guidance for crude oil custody transfer from small lease tanks. The transmitter – part of Emerson’s Plantweb™ digital ecosystem portfolio of transformational technologies, software and services – delivers enhanced accuracy which can be verified without having to open a tank’s thief hatch, thereby increasing safety.

“The API 18.2 standard places strict accuracy demands on level measurement instrumentation because high levels of uncertainty during custody transfer can have significant financial implications,” said Christoffer Widahl, product management lead with Emerson’s measurement and analytical business. “Measurement precision is therefore essential in these applications, and the enhanced performance of the Rosemount 3308 delivers the high accuracy required to reduce uncertainty and comply with API 18.2.”

An upgraded microwave module has made the Rosemount 3308 more tolerant to difficult process conditions and therefore able to deliver a more sensitive and repeatable measurement and higher accuracy. API 18.2 requires level transmitters to operate with 1/8” (3mm) resolution and 3/16” (4.7mm) measurement accuracy, which the Rosemount 3308 achieves when set up in high-performance mode. This then enables it to achieve the installed accuracy of 1/4” (6.3mm) required to comply with API 18.2. In standard mode, the accuracy of the device has been improved to 1/5” (5mm).

Accuracy can be easily verified in just a few minutes using the Rosemount VeriCase mobile verification tool. This straightforward procedure does not require a tank’s thief hatch to be opened or any product to be transferred. Opening the thief hatch can cause high concentrations of hydrocarbon gases and vapours to be released, putting worker health at risk, so eliminating this requirement is an important safety improvement.

In addition to providing the accuracy required for custody transfer applications, the Rosemount 3308 also delivers reliability in continuous level and interface monitoring applications in refineries, oil fields, offshore platforms and chemical plants, thereby providing a cost-effective standardised solution across an entire facility. The Rosemount 3308 is a top-mounted device that is virtually unaffected by changing process conditions such as density, conductivity, temperature and pressure, and because it does not have moving parts, no calibration is required, and maintenance is minimised. A wide range of process connections, probe styles and accessories ensure application flexibility.

For applications involving interfaces, the high accuracy of the Rosemount 3308 helps to maintain product separation by issuing an early warning if an interface is identified where there should be only one liquid. By reducing uncertainty and optimising product quality it helps to produce significant savings for end users.

Wireless technology significantly reduces installation and configuration time for level measurement applications and can typically reduce costs by at least 30 percent compared with a wired solution. The Rosemount 3308 can be installed and operating in less than an hour – reliably transmitting data via a wireless gateway to a control system or data historian. Status information and device diagnostics are easily accessible from the control room, reducing maintenance requirements and enhancing operator safety by eliminating unnecessary field trips.

Non-contact level of bulk solids!

A dedicated version of the Rosemount™ 5408 Non-Contacting Radar Level Transmitter to meet the specific demands of bulk solids level measurement has been launched by Emerson. Through advanced technology and Human Centered Design principles, the SIL 3-capable device delivers enhanced accuracy, reliability and ease-of-use, supporting improved process optimisation and plant safety across a wide range of industries.

“Improving bulk solids process optimisation requires greater level measurement accuracy and reliability,” explained Margit Rastas, product manager, Emerson Automation Solutions. “The Rosemount 5408 non-contacting radar delivers this performance, while simplifying installation and operation within the toughest applications.”

Measuring solids level in vessels, bins and silos presents various challenges, the most fundamental of which is the inclining or sloping nature of the material surface. The peaks and troughs of uneven surfaces deflect energy away from a radar signal and can generate false signal reflections which affect measurement accuracy. By using a signal processing algorithm that merges surface peaks, the Rosemount 5408 provides a high level of accuracy. The device’s two-wire Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology produces a continuous echo to maximise radar signal strength and produce a more robust and reliable measurement.

The considerable amount of dust created during the fill cycle in solids applications creates a further challenge for measurement technology. Non-contacting transmitters usually handle dust in the vapour space well, but a heavy layer of dust on the antenna could block the signal. The Rosemount 5408 overcomes this with an integrated air purging system for cleaning the antenna.

Advanced surface tracking and a condensation-resistant cone or parabolic antenna enable the Rosemount 5408 to provide reliable measurements in very demanding applications. In addition, radar-on-chip technology replaces a circuit board, removing sources of EMC noise which cause signal disturbance, and leading to improved measurement accuracy and reliability. To further enhance device reliability, a unique embedded power back-up removes vulnerability to intermittent power losses.

Two-wire technology enables simple installation - using the plant’s existing cable infrastructure rather than having to lay additional cabling - while still providing the same high amount of data and diagnostics that would normally require four-wire connections. ATEX and IECEx approvals allow installation in hazardous locations and the device’s SIL 3 capability enables seamless integration into safety instrumented systems, supporting efforts to increase plant safety.

The Rosemount 5408 employs Human Centered Design principles to enhance ease-of-use. Pictorial instructions and a highly intuitive software interface guide the operator through installation, commissioning, proof-testing, operation and maintenance. Advanced on-board diagnostics support preventative maintenance and provide actionable information, streamlining the troubleshooting process. The ability to perform proof-testing and site acceptance tests remotely saves time and increases worker efficiency and safety by keeping them out of hazardous areas.

The new 24 GHz and 80 GHz transmitters complement the two existing 6 and 10 GHz devices of the OPTIWAVE series: OPTIWAVE 1010 is a 6 GHz FMCW radar suited for clean liquids in bypass chambers and Magnetic Level Indicators (MLI). It is welded to the bypass chamber or MLI and measures the position of the float or the liquid level. OPTIWAVE 5200 is a 10 GHz FMCW radar for liquids in storage and simple process applications with a wide range of options, SIL2 approval and a choice of fieldbus communication options.

Breathing life into level transmitters!

Heartbeat Technology has been added to the Endress+Hauser Micropilot FMR5X free-space radar and FMP5X Levelflex guided radar level transmitters.

Heartbeat Technology is an on-board diagnostics and instrument verification system that continuously monitors the status of mechanical, electromechanical and electronic components in the sensor, and sends alerts when it detects a problem. Alerts are sent in accordance with NAMUR recommendation NE 107 and are displayed at the device. Alerts include “Out of specification,” “Maintenance required,” “Device failure” and “Device OK.” The built-in diagnostics can detect process problems, such as build-up or foam before failure occurs.

Heartbeat Technology is also able to perform device verification in accordance with requirements of the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, oil & gas, chemical and other industries. Such requirements call for level instruments to be removed and calibrated unless in-situ verification proves the device is operating properly.

During verification, Heartbeat Technology compares internal components with their reference values, thereby determining the device status. Verification produces a pass or fail statement, depending on whether the assessment is positive or negative, and generates a verification report in compliance with quality, safety and regulatory requirements, and meeting the needs of agency auditors.

Verification information, reports, diagnostics alerts and instrument data can be viewed at the control and monitoring system, or via a web browser running on a PC, tablet or smartphone.

Heartbeat Technology reduces the need for calibrations requiring the removal of instruments from the process; reduces the need for maintenance personnel to perform on-site instrument checks; immediately alerts operators when an instrument requires service; and provides diagnostics functions to describe problems so technicians know what they are dealing with before they go to the field.

FMR5X and FMPX Level Transmitters
The Micropilot FMR5X series of free-space radar level transmitters provide accuracy up to ±2mm for level measurement of liquids and ±4mm for bulk solids products in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, oil & gas, chemical and other industries. Multiple FMR5X transmitters can be installed in the same tank without interference among them because the transmitter pulses are statistically coded.

FMR5X instruments can be used to measure level or volume with a built-in 32-point strapping table. The liquids can be measured in metal or plastic tanks, stilling wells, bypass chambers or other vessels up to 131 feet high with standard units, or 197 feet with an enhanced dynamics option. The instrument can also be used to detect minimum or maximum levels to prevent overfilling or empty tanks, in addition to continuous monitoring of the level.

Levelflex guided radar level transmitters are used for continuous level measurement of liquids, pastes and slurries but also for interface measurement. The measurement is not affected by changing media, temperature changes, gas blankets or vapors.

Micropilot FMR5X and Levelflex FMP5X transmitters can be loop powered by 4-20mA in a two-wire arrangement, or separately powered in a four-wire configuration. Digital communication options include HART, Profibus PA and Foundation Fieldbus. Optionally, the transmitters are available with two independent, configurable 4-20mA outputs.

Non-contact level measurement.

Easy-to-use SIL 3 device provides enhanced diagnostics and remote proof-testing capability, supporting critical overfill prevention applications

At a time when experienced personnel are retiring and processes are being run closer to their capacity, Emerson Automation Solutions has launched a new non-contacting radar transmitter that helps operators increase reliability and safety. The SIL 3-capable Rosemount™ 5408 Non-Contacting Radar Level Transmitter uses enhanced technology and Human Centered Design to deliver accurate, reliable measurement and ease-of-use, supporting greater worker efficiency and plant safety.

To reduce complexity and enable less experienced workers to easily manage their level measurements for tank monitoring, process control and overfill prevention, the Rosemount 5408 has been designed to simplify operator tasks. Pictorial instructions and a highly intuitive software interface guide the operator through installation, commissioning, proof-testing, operation and maintenance. Enhanced on-board diagnostics support preventative maintenance, and provide actionable information, streamlining the troubleshooting process. The ability to perform proof-testing and site acceptance tests remotely saves time, increases worker efficiency and reduces the reliance on highly experienced staff.

“With a changing workforce demographic and increasing pressure to improve plant efficiency, companies require instrumentation that is extremely reliable and easy to implement and operate,” said Andreas Hessel, Rosemount strategic product manager, Emerson Automation Solutions. “The Rosemount 5408 takes level measurement a big step forward in both areas, offering the most advanced and simple-to-use radar available.”

With the need to run plants closer to capacity it is essential that instrumentation provides greater measurement accuracy and reliability, especially in critical overfill prevention applications. To support this, the Rosemount 5408 uses two-wire Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology that uses a continuous echo to maximize radar signal strength and produce a more robust and reliable measurement. In addition, radar-on-chip technology replaces a circuit board, thereby removing sources of EMC noise which cause signal disturbance, improving measurement accuracy and reliability.

To further enhance measurement reliability, a unique embedded power back-up removes vulnerability to intermittent power losses.

Supporting efforts to increase plant safety, the Rosemount 5408’s SIL 3 capability enables it to be seamlessly integrated into a safety instrumented system. ATEX and IECEx approvals allow installation in hazardous locations.

Radar level transmitter.

The FMR10 and FMR20 free space radar level transmitters  from Endress+Hauser measure liquid levels in storage tanks, open basins, open channels, weirs and canal systems. The FMR10 measures liquid levels at ranges up to 16 feet with 0.2 inch accuracy, while the FMR20 measures levels up to 66 feet with 0.08 inch accuracy.

The FMR10 has a 4-20mA output and comes standard with Bluetooth for configuration. The SmartBlue App that runs on any Apple or Android smartphone or tablet will provide secure communications with the transmitter in order to configure or view envelope curves. The encrypted and password-protected Bluetooth wireless connection allows operators to monitor the sensor’s output and perform configurations in hazardous or unsafe locations without exposing personnel to dangerous conditions.

The FMR20 features a 4-20mA HART smart output which will allow for configuration from an optional remote display. It also offers the option of Bluetooth configuration just like the FMR10.

Protection to IP66/68 / NEMA 4X/6P, hermetically sealed wiring and fully potted electronics eliminate water ingress and allow operation under harsh environmental conditions. Both sensors are available with a flooding tube that allows a maximum output signal to be generated even if an overflow condition causes the sensor to be completely immersed.

The level sensors work in process temperatures of–40 to 176°F (–40 to 80°C) and process pressures of –14 to 43 psi (–1 to 3 bar), are vibration resistant, and have CSA/UL approvals.

Micropilot FMR10 and FMR20 provide the best price-performance ratio. For the first time, radar technology is available in the price range of typical water and wastewater level devices. Especially for the W&WW industry and utilities in all industries, the transmitters fit the application requirements. Easy setup with just three main parameters and a remote indicator solution result in time savings and enhanced safety.

A first in radar level measurement.

Standards in level measurement instrumentation are regularly set by Endress+Hauser.

NMR81-a world first
Their new 79 GHz radar is the newest innovation, solving even the most sophisticated level measurement applications in liquids. Micropilot NMR81 utilizes 79 GHz technology to generate a narrow beam angle of 3° or 4°. Measurements are substantially more reliable even in narrow tanks because the radar beam avoids obstacles such as baffles on the tank walls, and is thus unhindered by interfering signals.

Furthermore, measurements right to the bottom in very tall tanks are easier because the beam does not hit the tank walls prematurely. Installation relatively close to the tank wall is possible with the narrow beam angle. The technology permits very long measuring ranges of up to 70 meters. In custody transfer, the instrument measures up to 30 meters with an accuracy of ±0.5mm.

Custody transfer applications require the highest measurement performance. The American Petroleum Institute (API) and International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) recommend an accuracy of 1mm (1/16”) for the level instrument under factory calibration conditions, and within 4mm (3/16”) for the entire measurement system after installation on the tank. Micropilot NMR81 easily fulfills all API and OIML requirements.

Additionally, the antenna is equipped with a gas-tight feed-through.  This “second line of defense” is particularly important for handling highly toxic or diffusive products.
