Statements from Exhibitors
Dr. Sandra Engle, speaker, German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association Productronic:- “Member companies of EMINT were pleased with productronica, even under the restrictions that applied to it. During the wide-ranging talks given at the Innovation Forum, visitors had an opportunity to learn about the topics that are moving the industry, including quantum technology, electromobility and innovative handling solutions for electronics production.”
Klaus Gross, Managing Director, FUJI EUROPE CORPORATION GmbH:- “Fuji was very satisfied with productronica 2021. First, we were quite pleased about the number of visitors we had. We had about 30 percent to 40 percent fewer visitors than in 2019. But this was still much higher than we expected. Second, the conversations we had were very high quality. In many cases, they were even paired with a specific investment project. We are also very happy about the opportunity the trade fair gave us to meet in person with customers after a two-year period of abstinence. It was quite a refreshing feeling after spending so much time with TEAMS, Webex, Zoom and co.”
Günter Lauber, the CEO of SMT Solutions Segment & EVPc, ASMPT:- “We are very satisfied. The atmosphere at our booth was really great. I believe one thing in particular: Now is the right time for hybrid trade fairs and events. We must also bring together the best of both worlds here, just as we have all learned to do in the past two years. This is also the case for productronica. Messe München created an exceptional platform here and applied an excellent safety concept as well!”
Ajit Manocha, President and CEO, SEMI:- “The return of SEMICON Europa, co-located with productronica, to an in-person gathering with the necessary health and safety protocols is a vital step forward for the microelectronics industry in Europe. SEMI is excited to again be gathering leaders with the brightest minds from across the electronics design and manufactur-ing supply chain to collaborate in addressing the many shared opportunities and challenges we face.”
Jürgen Ries, Managing Director, ASYS Automatisierungssysteme GmbH:- “We have seen in general that topics can be addressed well with digital formats – but these formats cannot completely replace in-person events. Following the long lockdown, we were extremely happy about the decision to hold productronica once again. productronica is definitely the leading trade fair for the electronics industry, and it means the world to us. Of course, we were a little worried about the number of visitors who would attend due to the worsening coronavirus situation. We were more than pleasantly surprised by the number of visitors, and the quality of our conversations was excellent.”
Christoph Stoppok, Managing Director, the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association’s ELECTRONIC trade association:- “productronica was one of the few in-person trade fairs to be held this year. It was very positively received by exhibitors and visitors alike. Exhibitors and visitors really enjoyed their encounters with other people, their interesting conversations and the chance to really develop and cultivate business relationships. The pandemic has certainly given digitalization a tremendous boost. But digitalization will never be able to replace personal encounters. It can only complement them. In this regard, exhibitors and visitors are looking forward to other trade fairs in Munich.”

Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy CEO of Messe München, expressed his satisfaction with the trade fair: “We are really very happy that we could hold productronica as an in-person event. As you might expect, this year’s exhibition turned out to basically be Europe’s leading trade fair. But its appeal extended well beyond the region of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as the large number of visitors from Italy, France, Israel and Turkey demonstrated.” Barbara Müller, the Exhibition Director of productronica, added: “productronica underscored its position as a leading trade fair for the industry.”

Attendance more important than ever
Rainer Kurtz, the Chairman of the Advisory Board for productronica and the CEO of Kurtz Holding, agreed with Barbara Müller: “productronica demonstrated once again that it is actually something more than the leading trade fair for electronics production.” Elaborating on his experience with the in-person event, he added: “For our customers and business partners, there is no alternative to personal contact. The industry lives from this showcase of innovation. Considering the current pandemic situation, we think the trade fair was a complete success.” Thilo Brückner, the CEO of EMINT productronic, a trade association of the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association, expressed his satisfaction with the event: “productronica was a very successful trade fair for EMINT and its members. Visitors, many of whom came from European countries outside Germany, had specific projects in mind and showed just how important in-person trade fairs are.” Volker Pape, a co-founder and member of the Supervisory Board at Viscom AG, stressed one other point: “We are happy that we could meet face to face with our customers once again and make live presentations of Viscom technology, even amid all of the restrictions. productronica proved its importance as a leading trade fair even in these times. The number of visitors was certainly below the levels seen during ‘normal’ times, but it was still much higher than expected.”

productronica Innovation Award
For the fourth time, Messe München joined with the publishing company Hüthig Verlag to present the productronica Innovation Award. The 60 nominations for the award, the winners of which are traditionally honored on the first day of the trade fair, demonstrated that the industry possesses an immense amount of ingenuity even amid today’s unsettled times. Cluster “Cables, Coils & Hybrids”: Schleuniger AG
Cluster “Future Markets”: Koh Young Europe GmbH
Cluster “Inspection & Quality”: Alfamation S.p.A.
Cluster “PCB & EMS”: IO Tech
Cluster “Semiconductor”: AP&S International GmbH
Much tradition, a premiere: “productronica online”
“productronica online,” an addition that helps exhibitors and visitors digitally connect to one another, celebrated its premiere. The platform went online for the first time on November 8 and will remain online until November 26. All individuals taking part in the in-person event in Munich automatically had access to it. About 5,000 participants had used this new service by the final trade fair day.

• The next productronica will be held from November 14—17, 2023, at the fairgrounds in Munich.

The beating heart of Industry 4.0.

As a digital image of machines, components and production simulations from engineering, the digital twin combines live data from production and optimization analyzes. From November 16 to 19, productronica 2021 in Munich (D) will show what opportunities this will create for the electronics production industry.

Exhibitors at productronica

16-19 November 2021
Munich, Germany.

The purpose of the digital twin has expanded to include the manufacturing industry and, in particular, mechanical and plant engineering with Industrie 4.0. The possibilities include, for example, verifying real machines, and predicting the service life and condition of the system (condition monitoring and predictive maintenance).

The simulation models of virtual commissioning used to verify and validate a machine or system can be used as a partial model of a digital twin. The digital twin will be taken into account for new business models in order to enable the likes of individual trainings and illustrating data-driven optimizations. Because of this, the digital twin will be an important component of machine distribution in future. A fully integrated virtual commissioning can lead to the following service capacity: improved competitiveness due to shorter delivery times, cost savings and time reduction by doing away with physical test setups.

They do so by mapping processes, machines, systems, products or services over the entire life cycle—from design to decommissioning—in a virtual environment. A continual flow of real-time sensor data is aggregated in the digital twin. This way, product developers receive information about how the machine behaves in real operation and are able to incorporate the findings into new designs.

Service technicians are able to minimize costly downtimes and failures through predictive maintenance using sensor data (temperature, torque, vibration, etc.) and artificial intelligence algorithms.

In addition, as an “after-market service” as well as “pay-per-use” or “machine as a service,” predictive maintenance is among the new data-driven business models that could open up new sources of revenue.

Virtual test runs
In combination with AI technologies, digital twins can simulate complete production lines or specific customer requirements before implementation. Mechanical and plant engineering in particular benefits from this, as mechatronic systems with an increasing proportion of software pose ever greater challenges for developers. Here, virtual test runs shorten the time to commissioning, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction. These also allow development processes to be continued in times of restricted hardware supply chains. And last but not least, precise predictions of energy consumption reduce the ecological footprint.

Digital twins for Industry 4.0
Digital twins contain all the information that characterizes the features and behavior of an asset (object). The asset administration shell (AAS) designed by the IDTA (Industrial Digital Twin Association) implements the digital twin for Industry 4.0.

In order to establish this interoperable digital twin on the market and ensure international distribution, VDMA and ZVEI founded the Industrial Digital Twin Association e.V. in 2020. By setting up an international community, the association is focusing on an open approach (open source), which enables small and medium-sized companies to access the technology and thus to participate in the data-driven economy. VDMA Productronic is an ideal, specialist sponsor of productronica.

Digital twin and data protection Last but not least, the installation of a digital twin requires willingness to make data from machines and systems available to suppliers and customers. This cannot be done without reservations, because ultimately one’s added value depends primarily on the machinery. Therefore, when exchanging data, the question of data sovereignty and intended use always arises, but as does the matters of IT security, sabotage and espionage.

A study by msg systems ag and Fraunhofer IPK, which examined the degree of maturity of digital twins in the manufacturing industry, came to the conclusion that European companies that want to be competitive and future-oriented with their digital twins need to break up their internal data silos and allow the flow of information between users and suppliers.

productronica 2021 and the “digital twin”
The two trend topics of productronica 2019 were Smart Maintenance and Smart Factory. Even then it was clear that the use of digital twins is central to the implementation of these concepts. Both topics will play an important role at the world’s leading trade fair for electronics development and production this year as well. This applies to the exhibition area as well as to the three forums: “productronica Forum” (Hall A1), “PCB & EMS Speakers Corner” (Hall B3) and “Innovation Forum” (Hall B2).

Electric mobility explored.

Currently, and in the years to come, the provisions for reducing CO2 emissions will lead to an increase in electric mobility of 10% by 2025. A key player in this technological transition is the electronics manufacturing industry. From November 16 to 19, 2021 in Munich (D), productronica will show what opportunities the electrification of the automotive industry offers the electronics manufacturing industry. VDMA Productronic is an ideal, specialist sponsor of the trade fair.

Electric Mobility Exhibitors

    • Manz (Hall B2, Booth 416)
    • KOMAX (Hall B4, Booth 263)
    • Festo (Hall A3, Booth 263)
    • LPKF (Hall B2, Booth 303)
    • Viscom (Hall A2, Booth 177)
    • Hesse Mechatronics (Hall B2, Booth 221)
The coronavirus pandemic is also leaving its mark on automotive markets. The trend toward electric mobility, meanwhile, has once again picked up significant speed. Especially in Germany, a larger selection of electric mobility solutions together with government subsidies are leading to dynamic growth.

Roland Berger’s “E-Mobility Index 2021” showed that nearly 400,000 electric vehicles received registration approval in 2020 – three times as many as in the previous year. Their share of the total market rose to 12.6% (2019: 2.9%). The German market for electric mobility ranks second in the world behind China.

According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, it was also possible to achieve the goal of one million electric vehicles (54% purely electric / 46% plug-in-hybrids) on German roads that had in fact been envisaged for 2020. Now the current German transport minister Andreas Scheuer  says the number is to increase to 14 million by 2030.

Private and public charging
In order to keep pace with the registration approvals of electric vehicles, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) claims that the country needs more than a million freely accessible charging points by that time. This is also the case in the “Climate Protection Program 2030” and in the “Charging Infrastructure Masterplan.” In the same period, consulting firm PwC only expects a demand for “more than 700,000 charging points in public spaces. This is the case even if a lot of charging processes will take place at home (60-70%) and at work (15-25%).” However a current listing from the German Federal Network Agency shows that, as of August 1, only 40,000 slow charging points and 6,750 rapid charging points are in operation.

In order to change this quickly, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) is making an additional 500 million euros available by the end of 2025 with the reissued “Publicly available charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Germany” support program. There are grants for normal charging points with a charging performance up to 22 kW and for rapid charging points with a performance greater than 22 kW, at which it is only possible to charge with direct current (DC). This should result in at least 50,000 charging points (of which at least 20,000 rapid charging points) by the end of 2025.

In order to at least partly solve the problem of private charging, the German government has put an additional €300 million aside for the funding of wallboxes. Applications can be made under the following conditions: The charging station must be supplied with 100% green electricity, have a performance of 11 kW and be controllable in order to avoid overloading the local power grid.

Solid-state battery provides hope
However, a complete charging infrastructure alone won’t help against the limited ranges that exist today. High-performance batteries with longer service lives are at least as important. In Germany, they are also currently enjoying the spotlight. Car manufacturers and investors are regularly announcing new battery cell factories. According to the European Transport & Environment (T&E) association, there are plans for 38 battery factories across Europe with an investment volume of around €40 billion.

Nearly all of them are relying on established lithium-ion technology. But there is hope for the future in the form of solid-state batteries such as those being developed by Daimler, Volkswagen and Toyota. Compared to the current technologies, they promise twice the range at the same size. The first vehicles, including test vehicles from Toyota and Volkswagen, are already on the way. However, it will be some time before this new type of battery hits the road on a large scale. The analyst firm Yole Developpement expects the technology to hit the market in 2025 and reach an overall performance of 2.36 GWh by 2027. That’s just enough for almost 50,000 electric cars with a 50 kWh battery.

Increased range with silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN)
But batteries aren’t the only lever for increasing the range of electric vehicles. In fact, it is a matter of optimizing the entire powertrain. To that end the Fraunhofer IZM, together with Bosch and Porsche, are developing converters with lower-loss semiconductors made of silicon carbide (SiC) in the “SiCeffizent” project. This makes it possible to achieve an up to 6% larger range. The first mass-produced vehicles are already using the SiC and GaN transition semiconductors, which are superior in terms of power density, longer service life and reliability.

IoT and 5G—The perfect combination opened up.

The IoT (Internet of Things) has been around in business for a long time. But now, thanks to the new 5G mobile communications standard, it is able to tap into its full potential. You can find out what Opportunities for this for the electronics manufacturing industry will be opened up “live” at productronica 2021 from November 16–19, 2019 in Munich (D).

The Internet of Things (IoT) can’t be slowed down—not even by the coronavirus pandemic. IoT remains one of the fastest growing technology sectors. The market research firm Statista therefore expects that there will be nearly 31 billion IoT devices online by 2025. Other estimates predict more than double that amount.

productronica 2021
Exhibitors on the topic of IoT/5G/6G

iTAC (Hall A3, Booth 161) -iTAC offers MES and IIoT solutions for transparent, automated production processes, and provides various services for the networking, automatization and analysis of manufacturing processes.
Cimetrix (Hall A3, Booth 437) - With the industrial IoT platform Sapience, manufacturers, software developers and OEMs gain access to devices that were previously difficult to connect.
Segger Microcontroller (Hall A1, Booth 174) - Segger delivers complete end-to-end solutions for every IoT scenario that cover all areas from development tools up to standard firmware components.
Orbotech (Hall B3, Booth 320) - The Israeli company distributes new technologies and solutions for manufacturing processes in the field of 5G.
Rohde & Schwarz (Hall A1, Booth 375) - A new family of test devices is tailored to 5G applications in development, type testing and production.
Fraunhofer IZM (Hall B1, Booth 228) - A new generation of thick film paste makes it possible to manufacture extremely high-resolution structures necessary for 5G applications.
Aurel (Hall A2, Booth 481) - The Italian company Aurel develops production systems that are precisely matched to the PI pastes from the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems.

According to Market Research Future, the global market for IoT in manufacturing alone is to grow to USD 751.3 billion by 2023, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24%. Grand View Research predicts a global market volume of US$ 1.11 trillion in the sector by 2028. The reasons for the analysts’ optimistic outlook include advancing automation, predictive maintenance and supply chain management.

The IoT study from Computerwoche and CIO highlights this trend: 44 percent of the industrial businesses surveyed stated that they had increased their IoT budget during the pandemic. The funds primarily went toward quality control and logistics, followed by networked production systems and intelligent products.

More IoT thanks to 5G and 6G
Thanks to the new 5G mobile communications standard, there is now a significant expansion to the range of applications, not just in the industrial setting, but also in the areas of energy, health, science and consumers. With high bandwidth, strong transmission performance and low latency, in many areas 5G represents the technical foundation for the next stage in the development of IoT.

However, this basis is not perfect. Researchers and companies are already beginning to prepare the next 6G mobile communications standard. This appears to achieve the things that were promised by 5G, according to an interview by Ivan Ndip from the Fraunhofer Institut IZM. 6G is to once again significantly increase the performance of mobile communications in terms of peak throughput, users’ data rates, reliability, latency, as well as energy efficiency and precision of localization. The use of terahertz frequencies from 100 GHz therefore allows for data rates up to a terabit per second and latencies of around 100 microseconds – fifty times the data rates of 5G and a tenth of the latency. All with a much higher concentration of connections (devices per square kilometer). Here, 5G can “only” support up to one million networked IoT devices in an area of one square kilometer. 6G increases this tenfold.

Semiconductor market benefits from IoT and 5G
The rapid growth of networked IoT devices therefore demands not only more and more semiconductors, but also increasingly high-quality components for them. This applies to all industry segments and IoT relatives (IIoT, IoMT, AIoT, etc.).

As such, IoT analytics expects the IoT semiconductor market to increase from USD 33 billion (2020) to USD 80 billion by 2025. The focus is on IoT microcontrollers (MCUs), as well as chipsets for IoT connectivity, IoT AI and IoT security.

However, the lion’s share goes to IoT connectivity chipsets, with 35 percent. Here, cellular IoT chipsets are now playing a leading role. For this segment, IoT analytics expects a CAGR of 37.5 percent between 2020 and 2025, driven by 5G and “Low Power Wide Area” (LPWA).

Yet, according to analysts, the IoT semiconductor market is still in its infancy. This is expected to change in the years to come. The share of IoT-specific semiconductors will increase from 7 to 12 percent between 2019 and 2025. The Internet of Things is starting to establish itself as a driving force for the semiconductor industry. However, this means that chip manufacturers also increasingly need to meet the typical requirements of IoT, such as ultra-low power, small form factors and integrated security.

Positive trade show news.

It is arguable that Germany is the best country at organising and holding exhibitions or trade fairs in Europe and perhaps the world. This industry is on of the most effected by the global pandemics and our mail box has been pepperd with notices of cancellations or alternative (and less satisfactory or fulfilling?) web events. So this is a good new story.
On the way back!
Trade fair events will once again be possible in Bavaria (D) as of September 1, 2021. This was announced last week by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs together with Messe München. As a result, the world’s leading trade fair for electronics development and production can take place as planned from November 16 to 19 in Munich. Companies still have the possibility to take part in productronica 2021 as exhibitors.

The in-person event next fall will also feature a digital supplement in the form of online offerings. Industry representatives will have the opportunity to take part in productronica in person or virtually, regardless of the conditions in place. Falk Senger, CEO of Messe München, is optimistic about the industry meeting in November: “In the past few months we have been working hard on the safety standards and are now excellently prepared for the new start with an optimal safety and hygiene concept. We are looking forward to once again welcoming lots of exhibitors and visitors to productronica in person.”

Comprehensive safety and hygiene concept
Messe München has developed a comprehensive safety and hygiene concept in close cooperation with the relevant authorities: This includes important new elements in addition to basic provisions, such as maintaining the minimum distance, the wearing of FFP-2 masks and the traceability of all participants. This includes the VCR concept: Access to the exhibition grounds is only granted to people who have been proven to have been vaccinated, checked or recovered. These data can already be entered at the online registration stage. In addition, Messe München is making test capacities available on site. Modern ventilation systems that guarantee a regular and reliable supply of fresh air provide additional protection for exhibitors and visitors in the exhibition halls.

Positive signals from the industry
The current development in the area of electronics development and production gives hope for a successful event in fall, as Reinhard Kurtz, CEO of the Kurtz Ersa Group and Chairman of the Advisory Board of productronica explains: “In the first half of 2021 incoming orders in the industry developed very well for the most part. As the pandemic slows down, exhibitors expect a continued positive business trend for this year and the next. In this respect, productronica 2021 has every chance of being a wonderful reunion for the entire global electronics production industry.”

Thilo Brückner, CEO of the trade association Electronics, Micro and New Energy Production Technologies (EMINT), shared a similar comment at VDMA: “As an ideal sponsor of productronica we are counting on a successful trade fair in November. Personal contact with customers and networking are the key ingredient for a successful trade fair business. This only works with an in-person event.”

More than 500 exhibitors registered
Nearly five months until the start of the event, more than 500 companies have already confirmed their participation: leading key players such as ASM Assembly Systems, F&K Delvotec, Komax, as well as Kurtz Ersa and Rohde & Schwarz will be represented at productronica 2021. Interested companies still have the possibility to register for this trade fair in November.

“Colleague robot" conquers electronics production.

productronica adds robotics to exhibition portfolio

Already today, many companies and branches of industry are automating—and now robotics is taking over new areas in electronics production. That is why, for the first time ever, this year's productronica, the world’s leading trade fair for electronics development and production, has added the topic of robotics to its exhibition portfolio.

The reason for this development is obvious: Mass production and constantly increasing competition are forcing companies to produce their products faster, better and cost efficient, also in electronics production. Certainly, a case for robots. After all, they work with maximum accuracy and precision and can mass-produce products while maintaining a high level of quality. Flexible lightweight robots can be used multipurpose for a high number of tasks. Thanks to enormous progress during the past years, under certain conditions they can even collaborate with their human colleagues.
