Encyclopedia explores temperature measurements and nanomeasurements!

The 'Handbook of Thermometry and Nanothermometry' presents and explains of main catchwords in the field of temperature measurements and nanomeasurements. This the first, well illustrated in full color, encyclopedia contains more than 800 articles (vocabulary entries) in thermometry and nanothermometry, and covers nearly every type of temperature measurement device and principles. This makes this book unique!

Written by experts, the book at the first place is destined for all who are not acquainted enough with specificity of temperature measurement but are interested in it and study literary sources in this realm. The authors tried to enter maximally on catchwords list the issues, which refer directly or indirectly to thermometry as well as to nanothermometry. The last one is the most modern chapter of thermometry and simultaneously of nanometrology.

The Handbook of Thermometry and Nanothermometry is a probably a 'must have' guide for both beginners and experienced practitioners who want to learn more about temperature measurements in various applications: engineers, students, researchers, physicists and chemists of all disciplines. In addition, this book will influence the next decade or more of road design in the nanothermometry.

MEMS pressure sensors

This is a quick heads-up on International Frequency Sensor Association's (IFSA) newly published book titled, "MEMS Pressure Sensors: Fabrication and Process Optimization," from the pen of Parvej Ahmad Alvi Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, School of Physical Sciences, Banasthali University, India.

So far, no book has described the step by step fabrication process sequence along with flow chart for fabrication of micro pressure sensors, and therefore, the book has been written taking into account various aspects of fabrication and designing of the pressure sensors as well as fabrication process optimization. A complete experimental detail before and after each step of fabrication of the sensor has also been discussed. Thus this may be said to be an unique book.

It will greatly benefit undergraduate and postgraduate students of MEMS and NEMS course, process engineers and technologists in the microelectronics industry as well as MEMS-based sensors manufacturers.

Digital sensors & sensor systems: practical design

Professor Sergey Y. Yurish has published his first book with the IFSA Publishing. It's titled "Digital Sensors and Sensor Systems: Practical Design" and is about how quickly to design high performance, low cost digital sensors and sensor systems (including smart sensors and intelligent sensor systems) for different physical and chemical, electrical and non-electrical quantities.

Semiconductor and integrated sensor design are heavily driven by technology scaling. Rapid advances in microelectronics and nano-technologies have brought new challenges to the digital, smart, intelligent sensors and sensor systems design.

Because such design approach based on the frequency (time)-to-digital conversion has not been adequately covered in the literature before, this unique book aims to fill a significant gap and presents new knowledge in this emerging area of modern sensors.

The goal of this book is to help the practicians achieve the best metrological and technical performances of digital sensors and sensor systems at low cost, and significantly to reduce time-to-market. It should be also useful for students, lectures and professors to provide a solid background of the novel concepts and design approach because of till now such topics have been covered adequately only in a few European and American universities.

Practical lab measurements & instrumentation

Critique by Dr. Sergey Y. Yurish, International Frequency Sensor Association (IFSA)

The Handbook of Laboratory Measurements and Instrumentation is a practical oriented book which presents to readers experimental and laboratory activities with an approach as close as possible to reality, even offering remote access to experiments, providing to the reader an excellent guide and tool for learning laboratory techniques, instruments and methodologies including methods of measurements, results analysis and errors evaluation.

The authors are internationally recognized scientists from the University of Porto (P), Maria Teresa Restivo, Fernando Gomes de Almeida, Maria de Fátima Chouzal, Joaquim Gabriel Mendes and António Mendes Lopes. They confirm that instrumentation is vital for the design and implementation of measuring, monitoring and actuation systems and in data acquisition systems and processing, playing nowadays a fundamental role in many technological areas, as well as in those of certification, control and information. The increasing demand of experimental accuracy in all scientific areas makes instrumentation for measurement a crucial component, particularly in higher education curricula with a strong technological element, being also essential at research and development level.

The publication of this handbook, by the International Frequency Sensor Association, is well-timed because when dealing nowadays with large classes it is very difficult for universities’ teachers and professors to provide to the students direct contact with well-structured hands-on experimental measurements in real measuring laboratory. This well organised book presents to higher education students in engineering, physics, bioengineering and other related areas, a first overview of some of the most common measurement techniques, offering a close approximation to the real laboratory environments, which they may encounter at a later stage in their studies.

The handbook is organised in a logical and methodical way. The introduction is following by thirteen well-illustrated chapters on various aspects of measurement and instrumentation such as generic laboratory equipment, temperature, dimensional, force, strain, displacement, proximity and angular velocity measurements, data acquisition systems, web monitoring and control, bridge circuits for resistance, inductance and capacitance measurements, etc.

Each chapter is independent, self-contained and followed by useful references collected at the end of the book including basic books, articles and carefully selected web links. Each one presents a clearly defined learning objective, the essential concepts and a step-by-step guide for performing the experimental activity, various complementary multimedia contents and a final synthesis. The set of open questions that closes each chapter is intended to provide formative assessment. This unique book includes dozens simulations, animations and videos (see examples in the full-page [pdf]  review in Sensors & Transducers). It makes this title a very valued and different volume from existing books on measurements and instrumentation.

The Handbook of Laboratory Measurements and Instrumentation not only fills the existing gaps in the available literature on measurements but also simultaneously opening the excellent prospects for the dissemination of know-how, technologies and techniques among students, researchers and engineers.

The newly published book significantly contributes to the dissemination of experimental activity in engineering education and to facilitate the conception, tuning and exploration of experimental systems for laboratory training. The full technical description of the equipment is provided to make the setups easily reproducible. Engineers, researchers, technicians and students who are working in measuring laboratories will find plenty of practical information here for solving daily problems.
