Sockets with push-in technology.

Safe, simple, and smart push-in wiring provides high reliability and saves installation time to improve operation efficiency.

IDEC Corporation has enhanced their popular HW series of 22mm switches and pilot lights, as well as the SJ/SU series of relay sockets, with new options for push-in wiring technology, continuing the company’s goal of delivering safe, simple, and smart solutions.

The IDEC HW series of panel-mount pilot devices already features innovations such as the industry-first ability to illuminate six different colors with a single high-visibility LED. Similarly, IDEC SJ/SU relay sockets work with IDEC and other relays, and are available with convenient accessories and many form factors. Adding push-in wiring connections gives users extra design options, provides even safer and more reliable installation, and minimizes labor costs.

Ferrules and stripped solid wires can be connected by simply pushing them in, without the need for any tools. Some other vendors may offer variations of push-in connections which require tools, but the IDEC HW and SJ/SU series uses true tool-less push-in technology. There are no screws to torque or tighten. Wires can be removed by pushing down a small orange release pin with a screwdriver. Wiring can be performed by workers of any skill level, and wiring time is reduced by about 55% compared with conventional screw terminal connections.

Constant spring-loaded tension on the wire maintains a reliable connection and improves vibration resistance. The entire push-in structure is designed as finger-safe so workers never touch the conductors.

Push-in contact blocks are compact, taking less depth than traditional versions. This improves working space inside a panel and potentially enables enclosures to be downsized. Connections are angled to facilitate wire entry, and the contact blocks feature a handy test point for insertion of a multimeter probe. Both switch contact block and relay socket electrical connections are rated IP20 finger-safe. All other panel design considerations, product functions, features, and ratings remain at the same high level of quality and performance.

For control panel fabricators, machine OEMs, end users, and maintenance personnel, the push-in technology in the IDEC HW series of switches and lights and SJ/SU relay sockets provides a safer, simpler, and smarter approach for making connections.

Light guide/light pipe systems.

Foremost Electronics is now offering its British customers flexible light guide/light pipe systems from the long established manufacturer Mentor.

Alan Vincent, Sales Director of Foremost, comments, “Many applications require LED illumination for control and HMI purposes on ergonomically designed products which require complex assembly. Flexible light guides allow designers to illuminate control panels or surfaces without a fixed connection to host PCBs. Flexible light guides are also growing in popularity for aesthetic illumination of control panels, POS, signs, architectural features and public displays for which a flexible light pipe is an elegant solution.”

These flexible light guide / light pipe systems offer an elegant and cost-efficient solution for many opto-electronic design challenges - not least for a minor design change during a product mid-life-cycle face-lift. The most popular versions are designed for use with SMD TOP LEDS. These light guides push-fit into a Polycarbonate housing that is mounted on the PCB with two press-in lugs. As standard, a transparent lens is supplied for use at the visible end. Alternative coloured lenses are available, as are custom lengths. Mentor offers other flexible solutions for SMD and THT LEDs with 1000 μm, 2000 μm and 3000 μm fibres.

They also offers a range of flexible "M-Tube" light guides / light pipes. Unlike conventional light guides, these are designed to emit homogenous light along their entire length (up to 2M). They are ideal for cosmetic illumination of large control panels and have a myriad of other uses limited only by imagination!

Ex illumination.

R.Stahl now offers energy-efficient LED linear luminaires for zone 1 in hazardous areas with gases and vapours of all types – even in environments with highly combustible substances of gas group IIC.

The latest generation EXLUX 6002 luminaires protect the LED component from an ingress of the ambient atmosphere through a particularly reliable encapsulation, without compromising its high luminosity. The new devices produce a luminous flux on par with two conventional 36 W fluorescent tubes, but using 30% less power. Their optimised electronics also offers a wide-range input, which allows users to operate them with various supply voltages around the world. In addition to the IEC Ex certification, local certifications for Russia, India and Brazil have been obtained. All electronic components are mounted on the reflector plate, which can be very quickly replaced for maintenance if required.

This enables a compact design that ensures a highly robust product: the slim, low-profile GRP housings are impact-resistant according to IK10 and feature IP66/67 ingress protection. Furthermore, with a weight of less than 6.6 kg, an EXLUX 6002 is at least one third lighter than comparable competitive products of the same class. These LED lighting products are also suitable for retrofitting conventional linear luminaires with fluorescent tubes.

The new series is fully compatible with the EXLUX 6001 and its mounting accessories. The next-generation EXLUX 6002 is available in two performance classes and can be used at environmental temperatures ranging from -30 °C to +60 °C. In addition to ceiling installation, the lights are suitable for use as pendant lights or for pole mounting within buildings as well as outside. As a standard, the lamps come with five-wire through-wiring and a 5 x 4 mm² terminal block to enable easy connection with commonly available installation cables.

Last ray of light in the dark!

Lightweight, compact, robust emergency light fittings for hazardous areas!
When the lights suddenly go out, they remain to light the way: linear luminaires of the R. STAHL 6009 series, which now provides new emergency lighting solutions for fluorescent lamps with 2 x 18 W or 2 x 36 W power. The new EXLUX 6009 products provide 10% higher luminaire efficiency than the preceding models, which were already among the most successful emergency lights on the market. Moreover, they are lighter as well as more compact while featuring enhanced torsion resistance.

The standardised enclosure design with a sealing system based on silicone foam meets the increased service life requirements stipulated by IEC 60079. In addition to the gaskets, which are insensitive to chemicals and UV radiation, the luminaires are equipped with a robust hinge and innovative, user-friendly central lock. The enclosure ensures IP66/67 ingress protection. EXLUX 6009 luminaires are approved for use in hazardous zones 1, 21 and 2, 22. They withstand even outdoor conditions with icy weather and temperatures as low as -30 °C.

To check their operational readiness, the devices automatically perform a weekly self-test and an annual emergency light duration test. Very safe maintenance access to the luminaires is ensured with a full-phase safety shutdown via N/C switches. The battery and battery cover can only be replaced together, which means the gasket cannot be accidentally compromised.

Components that are swapped out (electronic ballast, lamp holder) are directly installed on the easy-to-remove reflector plate, making servicing the light fitting even easier. R. STAHL offers EXLUX 6009 luminaires in a standard version with 4 mm2 spring-cage terminals and 5-wire through wiring. Versions with screw terminals for cable cross-sections of 6 mm2 and without through-wiring or other custom modifications are available on request. The luminaires can be mounted on walls, ceilings or masts or installed as pendant lights.

Miniature, half-pitch light-guides!

Multitron has announced the availability of a new range of MENTOR miniature light-guides with radiating surfaces of 2mm diameter and a grid dimension of 2.54mm. Compared with conventional 5.08mm grid light-guides, these new miniaturised versions allow twice the number of display elements within the same physical width. This offers design engineers a whole new range of possibilities, particularly when space is restricted.

These new miniature light-guide modules are available in 150 standard variants including both horizontal and vertical radiating types, and single or multi-row modules. A number of different lengths are available as standard and special lengths can be provided at low MOQs due to clever tool inserts. Some versions are panel-mounted thus avoiding the need to drill holes in the PCB. Diffused and clear light-guide options are offered and customised, coloured modules are also available; these show the LED display colour when the LED is switched off.

Despite their small radiating surface diameter of 2mm, with a relatively close side-by-side design, the miniature light-guides have been specially developed to prevent glare affecting neighbouring guide elements. This has been achieved by an in-house product creation process which starts with virtual development, and continues via simulation and prototype manufacture, all the way through to the final production stage.

This new range of light-guides extends MENTOR’S multi-category portfolio by adding over 150 new miniature light-guides. In total, MENTOR offers 452 variations of standard light guides, 209 of which are immediately available from stock with low MOQs. Other product categories in which MENTOR excel include diverse opto components, capacitive keypads, knobs, handles and illuminated switching.

As well as standard products, MENTOR has highly advanced and innovative competencies in the design and in-house manufacture of custom light guides and optics for a wide variety of applications. They are first-tier suppliers to many major automotive and lighting companies.
