New high speed torque sensor

The new type 4503A torque sensor from Kistler Instruments is designed to meet the demands of testing at high speeds in both production quality control and development. Typical applications include testing of electric motors, generators, drive performance, measurement of transmission or spindle drive friction, at a manual worksta¬tion or in networked, automated production cells.

Available in fourteen measuring ranges from 0.2 to 20 Nm with a rated speed of 50,000 rpm and 50 to 5,000 Nm at 30,000 rpm, all with an integrated speed sensor output of up to 360 pulses per revolution. Both analogue and digital outputs are provided by the integral, digital signal conditioning system making the new sensors ideal for use in laboratory, development, production or quality assurance applications.

The option of two, switchable ranges, with the second range being either 1:10 or 1:5 of the rated torque, allows very precise measurement of both peak and operating torque with the one sensor. In applications with a high peak but moderate operating torque, a sensor with only one measuring range would have to be chosen to withstand the peak torque. As a result, it would be oversized for accurately measuring the lower operating torque.

The contactless power and signal transmission between the rotating shaft and the stator, combined with precision manufacturing, low production tolerances and high grade shaft balancing, essential for reliable, high speed operation, ensure that the sensors maintain calibration over a long life.
