Electronic components market upswing in Ireland & Britain but problems between Britain & EU need attention.

The latest audited Britain & Ireland authorised distributor (afdec) statistical data has been released.

Adam Fletcher, Chairman of the Electronic Components Supply Network (ecsn) welcomed the uptake in Bookings and Billings activity reported by his members in March ’21, as customers realign their order book in-line with extending manufacturer lead-times. Total Monthly Billings (Net Sales Invoiced less Credits) in March ’21 increased by 35% when compared to the previous month and by 11% when compared to the same month 2020.  Overall Bookings (Net Sales Entered) increasing by 38% when compared to February ‘21 and by 59% over the same month last year. The Sales by Month “three month moving average” for all electronic components suggests modest growth into the first half of the year, albeit lower than historical norms due to the current economic situation.

At 1.47:1 the Book-to-Bill (B2B) ratio in March ‘21 remained elevated over the preceding month, driven by the very strong Bookings growth (see graphic) but Fletcher believes that that Q1’21 figures are being skewed by customer order placement activity. He cautioned that “probably around 80% of the growth is merely a reflection of extending manufacturer lead-times and customers’ response to tighter supply”.

Aubrey Dunford, an ecsn Market Analyst comments: “The Book-to-Bill data is very much in line with our expectations given the well-publicised capacity issues in the global electronic components supply network, especially in semiconductors. However, history has taught us that more important is the underlying demand which is more difficult to see.”

The association’s members have seen little improvement in the “vague” forecasting their customers in the combined region (Britain & Ireland) have been able to deliver in the last few years, but in the meantime they continue to manage their inventory investment carefully based on their best estimates of the real underlying customer demand: “Anecdotal indications do point to real underlying growth of circa 10% in the current year but I think it’s unlikely that 2021 will see our members’ performance return to the historical trend of strong Billings growth in the first half of the year”,  said Fletcher .

In conclusion Fletcher added that “Country of Origin” rules continue to pose problems for British companies exporting components from the Britain into the European Union: “Governments must get a grip on this issue or risk seriously disadvantaging authorised distributors who do not have EU based operations to support their customers based outside the UK and vice versa”.

Simplify the mounting of sensors.

Harting has developed a component carrier that can be mounted directly with electronic components allowing previous manual assembly processes to be automated. Flexible circuit boards can also be replaced, increasing precision and reducing assembly costs.

The component carrier serves as a connecting element between a printed circuit board (PCB) and electronic components (such as LEDs, ICs, photo–diodes or sensors).

In electrical drives, Hall sensors are used to determine the exact position of the rotor and the electronic components are normally attached manually as wired THT components. A mechanical bracket is also mounted which aligns the sensors at an angle of precisely 90 degrees.

Such manual assemblies are no longer necessary when Harting's component carriers are used because the sensors are automatically mounted onto the component carrier, making an additional component for arranging and aligning the sensors unnecessary.

The component carrier with the position sensors is delivered by Harting in a blister belt packaging (tape & reel) for the automatic SMD assembly process. This component carrier replaces the manual processing steps – thus increasing the reproducibility and reducing the processing costs.

2000 smart device macros stem from partnership!

2,000 Festo devices macros developed for EPLAN users

Partners Festo and EPLAN are each pushing forwards with the aim of connecting the worlds of configuration in electrical and pneumatic engineering. A data package developed by Festo specially for EPLAN users with over 2,000 smart devices macros now gives extra strength to the mechatronic orbit of the CPX terminal. Users of the EPLAN Platform can use this to simply and easily create overview drawings, electrical and pneumatic circuit diagrams, and PLC overviews.
The new exclusive macro collection of over 2,000 device macros for valve terminals with Festo's CPX electric terminal brings together configurations in electrical and fluid project engineering. The device data is available in six languages and comprises intelligent module configurations that already contain their electrical and fluid engineering connection logic, including function templates. The final type code of the configured Festo valve terminal is the link. It comprises two ID codes, one for the electrical and one for the pneumatic section. The designer can use this ID code to select the most appropriate of the predefined device modules and place it by Drag & Drop, into the electrical or fluid engineering documentation. Users of EPLAN Electric P8 and EPLAN Fluid can use this to quickly create 2D overview drawings, electrical and pneumatic circuit diagrams and PLC overviews. The data can be downloaded from Festo's website at no charge with ease.

Versatile for any field of application
The benefits of guided configuration using Festo's tools are combined with logic-based documentation in EPLAN. Thanks to an individual combination of different functions, the valve terminal's configuration can be matched to the application precisely – wide ranges of application are guaranteed. The Festo CPX terminal is perfect here: electrical and open to all current field bus standards and all customer-specific installation standards. Customers benefit from ease of handling: out of the control cabinet into the plant, network electrics and pneumatics, saving installation effort.

Free download
The macros, available for all CPX terminals (electrical peripheral equipment and field bus nodes) and some MPA valve terminals, contain the following functions and can be used as parts master data in the creation of the parts lists:
• Structural overview with individual module feeds and ordering code
• Circuit diagrams in all-pole representation, terminal diagram and PLC overview
• Overview of control cabinet with type codes and in a scale of 1:1

The data is available for download at no charge as a complete package from www.festo.de/EPLAN and can also be downloaded from the Festo online product catalogue under 2D/3D CAD. Availability through the EPLAN Data Portal is also in preparation.

Common target: user benefit
For some years, Festo and EPLAN have worked together to develop solutions with the aim of making engineering easier for their common customers. For instance, Festo's mechatronic components can be designed and documented simply thanks to the direct connection between EPLAN Fluid and Festo's product catalogue. In addition, the subsidiary Festo Didactic has been distributing the EPLAN Education software for industrial foundation and further training for some years.
