Second generation bridges!

A new range of Anybus .NET Bridges for PROFIBUS, PROFINET, EtherCAT and EtherNet/IP has been introduced by HMS Industrial Networks. Bridging the gap between Operational Technology (OT) and IT, the .NET bridge family enables data from industrial machinery to be presented to .NET-based IT applications. The result is that .NET programmers can build a PC program which exchanges live data with a PLC system — for statistics, analysis or maintenance.
“This is the second generation of our .NET bridges,” says James Kime, Product Manager for Anybus gateways. “The existing versions for PROFINET and PROFIBUS have been updated with new functionality, and we can now also offer connectivity to EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT. The .NET Bridges are truly ‘edge gateways’ in the sense that they establish a bridge between IT and OT. IT programmers get access to data from industrial machinery, while PLC programmers can rest assured that the data access does not interfere with their critical industrial applications and systems.”

The basic prerequisite for Industrial IoT is that IT systems get access to data from industrial applications. However, the fieldbus and industrial Ethernet networks of the factory floor are designed for real-time communication – by default separated from the IT-infrastructure. The Anybus .NET Bridges address this situation by acting as translators between OT and IT — sending and receiving data between the factory networks and IT platforms using .NET as a framework.

The communication is set up in a couple of minutes and the .NET Bridges are therefore a very fast way to realize IIoT.

Thanks to the data bridging capabilities of the Anybus .NET Bridges, IT systems get unprecedented access to real-time data from the factory floor which enables predictive maintenance, KPI-follow-up, machine analytics, data mining, big data processing, production statistics and much more – without interfering with the industrial processes.

The solution can be used for a wide range of use cases, from simple transfer of KPI values, advanced messages with structured data types, or ultra-fast transfer of I/O data for “big data.”

The information exchange between the OT and IT is defined in a spreadsheet template which defines how the data is mapped, tagged and presented to IT-applications. The spreadsheet is uploaded to the HMS code generator which automatically creates a customized high- level C# API (events and Post methods) that is easy to integrate directly into a .NET application. It also generates a customized GSDML or XML file for the PLC.

Updated precision bridge

An updated version of the LCR400 precision RCL bridge is now available from TTi (Thurlby Thandar Instruments). The instrument, which features a built-in 4-terminal test fixture and a full limits comparator for component sorting, now incorporates new analogue circuitry to improve the performance in terms of both accuracy and resolution.

The bridge has a basic accuracy of 0.1% for R, L and C measurements. Three measurement frequencies are available between 100 Hz and 10 kHz. The instrument is fully autoranging (with range hold) and can also automatically select the function based on the component inserted. It has dual 5-digit displays using large and bright LEDs. The second display is used for the secondary parameter of Q or D and is also used with the limits comparator for showing binning information.

It has a built-in high-quality 4-terminal test fixture that will accept most wire-ended components directly. A pair of plug-in pillar adapters enables axial components, such as bandoliered resistors, to be measured directly without bending the wires. The position of the test fixture on the instrument ensures that component bandoliers can be handled without interfering with the display or keyboard.

An external test fixture can also be used, and a capacitance null function allows up to 100 pF to be nulled out. A switchable bias voltage is provided for polarising electrolytic capacitors. The instrument incorporates a full limits comparator with binning. Up to eight pass bins can be defined along with two fail bins, and binning can be used to sort different tolerances of the same value or multiple different values. A numeric keyboard allows rapid setting up of binning values. Non-volatile memory is provided for the storage of up to nine complete instrument set-ups.

For surface-mount components, high-quality 4-terminal tweezers are available. The tweezers connect directly into the built-in test fixture of the LCR400. Four-terminal connection is made at the base of the gold-plated jaws only a few millimetres from the tip.

An RS232 interface is incorporated which allows connection to a PC and can be used to set up all measurement and sorting functions as well as store readings. PC software is supplied which allows both set-up and results logging.
