Power quality analyser breaks new ground!

First power quality analyser simultaneously to record all harmonics up to 100th
Outram Research has announced that their PM7000 has an improved “Interharmonics” option making it the first power quality analyser to record simultaneously all harmonics up to the 100th, on all three phases and the neutral, on either current or voltage. This new functionality makes it possible for engineers to analyse quickly and then eliminate power quality problems found due to high-frequency harmonics generated by uninterruptable power supplies (UPSs), drives or inverters.

By simultaneously recording all current or voltage harmonics to the 100th and many other electrical parameters, the PM7000I significantly reduces testing time, pinpointing potentially problematic higher-order harmonics and removing the need for a trial and error approach. For a 3-phase 4 wire wye configuration, the General Parameters function records over 70 power quality parameters in addition to the 400 streams of harmonic data. Because this is automatic, users find they have all the information they need without having to configure individual recording channels. Users can also choose one of thirteen different averaging intervals, from one second to two hours.

In addition to the General Parameter data, every PM7000 offers 32 detailed recording channels using Outram’s renowned Single Cycle Adaptive Store™ that intelligently records power quality parameters such as voltage, current (including inrush current), harmonics, flicker, unbalance and power factor down to a single cycle without the need to set triggers or levels. In the PM7000I these channels can also be used to extend harmonic recordings up to the 127th order.

“Because legislation focusses on lower frequencies, manufacturers often concentrate on reducing the presence of the first 50 harmonics,” said John Outram, Managing Director of Outram Research. “However, users of drives, UPSs or inverters, such as data centres, power critical manufacturing facilities and solar power plants, may be affected by higher-order harmonics generated by these machines. These harmonics therefore need to be monitored and controlled to avoid problems such as overheating machinery or premature equipment replacement.”

Another concern is that higher-order harmonics, created by renewable generation connected at the transmission level, may be emerging on the HV networks. These can then percolate right down to the end user so need to be managed.”

Power quality analysis via Bluetooth

Outram Research has announced that Bluetooth® is available across its entire power quality range, becoming the first manufacturer to enable Bluetooth remote control on all its products. This means that power engineers can control the entire range of Outram’s power quality analysers with one application running on a PDA.

Power quality analysers are often deployed in electrical cabinets or other difficult to reach locations, making it hard for engineers to read integrated displays. Outram’s software, PmScreens provides configuration and power quality data on a convenient PDA display eliminating problems due to the location of the analyser whilst allowing a more rugged solution by eliminating the need for large fragile displays to be integrated into the equipment.

In addition to displaying configuration data such as phasor diagram information to validate correct operation, engineers can access real time power quality information using a wireless Bluetooth connection between the PDA and the analyser. As well as for example current, voltage, power, power factor and flicker, engineers can access harmonic data, and, in the PM7000 this capability extends to over 500 parameters, detailed information about events such as sags (dips), surges and interruptions in power, and to waveforms, transients and interharmonics.

“The Bluetooth technology is ideal to enable remote control of power quality equipment without disturbing or gaining access to the installation. This means eliminating the need to take safety precautions; no locking and unlocking of cabinets, no need to turn off the power and no need to take time consuming precautions like putting on protective equipment,” said John Outram, Managing Director of Outram Research. “The connection is almost always reliable even if the cabinet in which the analyser is deployed is metal and closed. And with the processing power of the wide variety of PDAs and mobile phones available, PmScreens can provide enhanced colour graphics to help speed the process of troubleshooting power quality problems.”

Bluetooth technology is provided as standard on the market-leading Ranger PM7000 power quality analyser, the industry’s Cat IV 600V Phase A-powered analyser, and is available as an option on all other Outram analysers, including the 3-phase PM3000, single-phase PM1000 and the split-phase PM2000 that is designed specifically to troubleshoot power quality problems at residential premises in the USA.
