Sturdy portable printer.

Inelco Hunter has announced the availability of a new Fujitsu 3” mobile printer for use in environments where a regular mobile printer just doesn’t cut it. With a rugged design, the FTP-638WSL201 printer is exceptionally strong, durable, hard-wearing and shock-resistant, making it suitable for use in harsh environments, inside or outdoor.

Warehouse, maintenance and logistic areas are not the best environments for delicate equipment. The same goes for hospitality areas. Fujitsu’s FTP-638WSL201 printer has been designed for mobile use in locations like these where knocks and drops are liable to happen.

The rugged Fujitsu printer is able to withstand a drop from a height of 2.1 meters, and has a water resistance rating of IP54. This means it will be protected against contamination from limited amounts of dust and other particles and as well as remaining operational when exposed to splashes of water.

The printer is designed from a user and programmer point-of-view, making the printer easy to operate and also easy to integrate. The FTP-638WSL201 offers ESCPOS, CPCL and ZPL emulation. This will enable setting-up for any application with minimum effort.

Featuring a built-in LCD screen, the FTP-638WSL201 printer provides a high level of information and potential customisation, enabling direct control of the communications interface and set-gap or blackmark positions while allowing closer monitoring of the printer status and battery levels.

Using an innovative design, the printer can accommodate a larger than commonly-used paper roll, providing a paper width of 50-80mm on non-fixed positions. This helps to reduce downtime for the user when it comes to replacing the paper roll as well adding flexibility in the field.

The FTP-638WSL201 offers a variety of different connectivity options, including USB, Bluetooth, WLAN, and NFC. Battery life of the printer will depend on the communication protocol used. However, users can expect the standard battery to print a paper length per battery charge of 200m, which equals 4170 tickets of 48mm length depending on several variables.

It comes with a range of industry-standard accessories, including a carrying belt, AC adapter, USB cable, and battery.

Microcontrollers for industrial applications

At the embedded world 2011 conference in Nuremberg (D), Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe presented its complete range of new FM3 microcontrollers to a varied and interested audience under the umbrella term ‘Right-Sized Solutions’. FM3 is the name given to a family of microcontrollers that use the same architecture based on the ARM Cortex-M3 standard processor core, which are available in two versions. The high-performance MB9Bxxx series has a variety of peripheral functions and is suitable for demanding applications in industrial automation, while the basic MB9A100 line is oriented towards applications in areas such as home appliances, consumer products and office automation. The FM3 microcontroller range is also ideally suited for use in medical technology and healthcare applications. The family benefits from Fujitsu's vast experience in implementing ASICs with ARM cores in conjunction with the peripheral functions of its well-known FR microcontrollers, providing developers with exactly those components required for their solutions.

The core of the high-performance series is designed in such a way that it combines outstanding performance with low power consumption. In addition to the peripheral functions of the FR microcontroller family, which have already proven themselves in motor control applications, Fujitsu has implemented a number of further improvements in its peripheral macros in order to satisfy the exacting demands of drive technology. For example, the FM3 family has dedicated encoder inputs for determining rotor position, which reduces the load on the CPU.

In particular, the three independent high precision and very fast 12-bit A/D converters (1.0 µs conversion) with 16 input channels allow accurate sampling, and demonstrate their full potential in high-speed precision motors and other components in automation applications. This means that the FM3 MCUs can control two motors independently of one another. This was shown using an impressive demo application at the Fujitsu stand at the 'embedded world 2011' exhibition.

Together with the USB 2.0 host function of the FM3 microcontrollers, Fujitsu also presented a complete solution for embedded USB, based on the newly developed USB Assistant software. In the case of this tool, special emphasis was placed on ease of use in order to provide developers of embedded systems with a reliable software package, including firmware and configuration tools.

Most of the microcontrollers on the market with the Cortex-M3 core work with 3.6 volts or less, and cannot be used in 5 V systems. With its wide operating voltage range (2.7 to 5.5 V), the FM3 family therefore meets the considerable market demand for microcontrollers operating with 5 V, and should be ideal for applications in manufacturing automation and white goods.

The FM3 microcontrollers have an integrated and very reliable high-speed NOR flash memory (up to 1 MB), which has proven itself over many years and has been continuously improved. The memory is designed for 100,000 write cycles and data storage for up to 20 years. With the fastest write access in its class, zero wait states are possible at up to 60 MHz. The high-speed CPU with flash memory, USB 2.0 host function, CAN, multiple timers and special peripheral macros therefore makes the series of high-performance FM3 microcontrollers the perfect solution for applications such as motor control in automation technology.

The FM3 portfolio will be expanded in future. In addition to other members of the high-performance series, such as derivatives with Ethernet functionality, the first products of the low-power series are expected by the end of the year. These power-saving microcontrollers are optimised especially for use in battery-powered devices. Like all Fujitsu products, FM3 microcontrollers are characterised by their proven reliability and quality. The security of the client's investment is guaranteed by long-term availability of the components and local technical support.

IO starter kit at SPS/IPC/Drives

Fujitsu’s IO-Link starter kit simplifies the development of automation solutions

Fujitsu Semiconductor Europe has launched an IO-Link starter kit, which is designed to provide developers of automation solutions with a quick and easy introduction to all aspects of IO-Link as well as support IO-Link communication in both master and slave mode. The board was developed in collaboration with Technology Management Group (TMG) and Zentrum Mikroelektronik Dresden AG (ZMDI).

IO-Link is an open communication protocol used in automation technology to connect sensors and actuators to a master system (PLC) in accordance with IEC 61131. The IO-Link standard addresses the growing need for greater functionality, such as identification, parameterisation and diagnostics, even for miniature sensors and actuators.  This highly flexible, field-bus-independent solution is extremely easy to install and can be quickly integrated in existing automation solutions.

The starter kit from Fujitsu comprises a microcontroller-based board, the IO-Link adapter board and an evaluation version of the IO-Link protocol stack developed by TMG.

Microcontroller baseboard
The SK-16FX-EUROSCOPE microcontroller baseboard is based on Fujitsu’s scalable 16-bit microcontroller platform 16FX and is used for evaluating the microcontroller properties. In addition to the MB96F348H-MCU, the board features a UART, USB and high-speed CAN interface, pin contact strips that make all the pins on the microcontroller easily accessible, segment displays and buttons. The complete development environment with the compiler, linker, flash programmer, GUI and the Euroscope Lite on-chip debugger are also included in the scope of delivery.

Adapter board
The ADA-16FX-IOLINK-ZDMI adapter board is a cost-effective solution providing an IO-Link interface for the microcontroller baseboard. The core of the adapter board is the ZIOL2401 IO-Link high-voltage transceiver developed by ZMDI, which is the only IO-Link IC on the market today that supports not only IO-Link master ports and IO-Link device ports but also standard I/O applications. This is possible thanks to the ZIOL2401 chip, which features an innovative two-channel IO-Link driver and a DC/DC converter for up to 15V. The IO-Link drivers can be fully programmed – including the slew rate – and feature comprehensive diagnostic functions as well as a temperature sensor. The board is also equipped with a 24V converter and jumpers for a wide range of configuration settings.

IO-Link stack and IODD interpreter
TMG Karlsruhe is responsible for the software package (IO-Link master, device protocol stacks and IO-Link device tool), which forms a central element of the overall solution. The protocol stacks, which are written entirely in ANSI-C, support all the IO-Link functions (in accordance with specifications 1.0 and 1.1) and, accordingly, are modular in structure. Particular importance has been attached to the strict separation of the protocol stack, application and hardware in order to ensure that the software can be easily adapted in line with the respective customer application. The IO-Link device tool enables IO-Link devices to be operated by means of the XML device description (IODD). The software is included with the starter kit as a demo version or as an evaluation library.

Thanks to Fujitsu’s collaboration with ZMDI and TMG, users can rely on the famously high standard of support offered by these companies.

The IO-Link starter kit from Fujitsu will be showcased at SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010 on the PNO joint stand (hall 6, stand 210). The boards can be ordered immediately (mid-November 2010). More IO-Link tools from Fujitsu, such as an IO-Link/CAN gateway, are currently under development and will be available in the near future.
