Tape extension sensor

ASM Sensor Specialists has launched the NEW WB61 Tape Extension Sensor providing up to 4000mm measuring length in a compact housing. All ASM Tape Extension Sensors have been designed to operate in harsh conditions which make them a perfect choice for the Mobile Working Machine Market as well as other harsh demanding applications.

Due to the design of the sensor and the inherent strength of the stainless steel tape they can be found in environments and areas where other sensors struggle to survive such as hard to reach areas where directional changing pulleys are used or where temperature extremes cause problems such as icing. The life of our range of Tape Extension Sensors is totally unaffected by the use of pulleys which makes them the perfect choice for safety critical areas often found in crane operation or the Mobile Working Market in general.

The NEW Model WB61 is made from a quality moulded housing which enables lower construction costs for a rugged sensor that meets a high sealing level of IP67/69K (operational) making it an affordable choice for today’s demanding markets. The WB61 is also available with a choice of three analogue and three digital outputs (SSI, CANopen or CAN J1939) a linearity of +/- 0.10% with the option of redundant outputs. The WB61 is perfectly suited for installation on cranes, excavators, forklift trucks, hoists and access platforms.

Angle sensor

The PRDS1 is an extremely compact magnetic angle sensor in M12 housing from ASM, which sets new standards. The angle is measured without contact and wear-free over the entire measuring range up to 360° via a separate magnet.

From the POSIROT® family of magnetic angle sensors ASM presents an especially compact sensor. Only 12 mm in diameter and 50 mm depth the PRDS1 is suited to particularly compact applications where access is difficult. The complete measurement range of 0° to 360° is totally non contact utilising an independent magnet with an air gap between the sensor. This overcomes any connection or alignment problems often experienced if sensors have output shafts.

The PRDS1 has a range of incremental digital outputs RS5V, RS24V and HT24V with other alternatives being continuously developed. The sensor is manufactured from stainless steel with an integral M12 thread incorporated into the M12 body giving sealing options from IP67 to IP69K.

The extremely compact designed PRDS1 angle sensor can be used for all applications where angle detection and angle monitoring is required, such as assembly lines, valve flap settings, packaging machines, medical equipment, etc.

Position sensors offshore!

Measuring tape principle ensures long operating life

Oil Platforms, shipyards, construction and offshore engineering companies all have special requirements for sensors that can meet the tough and harsh environments that they have to work in. Sensor specialists ASM have engineered the WB100M Tape sensor for such applications. It is highly resistant to shock and operational to IP68/69K in sea water.

The POSITAPE® series of sensors exceeds all expectations when used in areas of difficult access and pulley wheels are used to change the direction of the tape route. On conventional wire draw sensors the use of these pulleys can considerably affect the life of the draw wire but with the POSITAPE® range they will have no effect on the life of the sensor.

Developed primarily for Offshore and outdoor applications the WB100M is well suited to wet, harsh applications often found in dock sites such as cranes and ramp positions or even sluice gates found on inland waterway systems.

The fully encapsulated electronics ensure that no moisture can penetrate the critical areas where as water is allowed to freely flow through the mechanical areas with no effect due to the use of materials specifically selected to work well in a salt water environment, resulting in the IP68/69K capabilities.

The WB100M is available in a range of measuring lengths from 2000mm up to 10000mm and a wide range of analogue or digital outputs including CAN-Bus.

Positioners underwater!

ASM extends the magnetostrictive POSICHRON® range by the PCST27 rod-profile sensor for underwater use up to 15 bar

The successful range of magnetostrictive position sensors POSICHRON® by ASM is being extended by the new PCST27 series. The robust probe sensors allow for precise positioning of hydraulic cylinders or the measurement of fluid levels. The models in the PCST27 series have proven their superior reliability, even after years of use under the most extreme conditions.

Magnetostrictive position sensors of the POSICHRON® product line are extremely durable and therefore suitable even for applications where other measurement principles fail. The newly presented PCST27 models by ASM were designed specifically for the integration inside of large hydraulic cylinders that are used in harsh environments such as offshore or in the shipping industry. The rod-profile design allows them to be easily installed in the cylinder and detect piston positions with high precision even under difficult conditions.

As with all models in the POSICHRON® PCST27 series, the sensors consist of a magnetostrictive waveguide and a movable position magnet. Based on magnetically generated density waves and the measurement of time pulses this measurement principle is ideal for applications that demand extreme precision, repeatability and resistance against environmental factors such as vibration, humidity or shock. The sea water resistant stainless steel housing allows the sensor to be used in off-shore locations. Based upon non-contact measurement technology, this position sensor ensures years of trouble-free operation.

These rod-profile PCST27 sensors are available up to protection class IP68 and are pressure resistant up to 15 bar. The absolute output offers linearity up to +/- 0.02% full scale. Measurement lengths from 0 to 100 or from 0 to 5,750 mm are available.

For easy integration into various systems, there is either an analog (with 0,5-10V or 4-20mA), a pulse (start/stop) or SSI output available. Longitudinal cable water tightness is a first in these sensors.

Tape extension position sensors

ASM Sensors has expanded its newest product line of tape extension position sensors, POSITAPE® with the introduction of the WB25 series. The POSITAPE® family was developed for applications that require the use of cable pulleys due space limitations. The measurement ranges of the WB25 series are 12m, 15m, 20m and 25m all in very compact housings.

The highly flexible measurement tape is constructed out of a high-tech stainless steel material that is 10 mm wide with only a 0.08 mm thickness. Due to its very smooth surface, the risk of icing is reduced. An integral tape dust wiper automatically cleans the tape each time that it is being retracted into the housing.

The WB25 series has a standard IP64 enclosure rating with an option for an IP67 rating and is available with the typical analog outputs: 0.5-10V, 0.5-4.5 and 4-20 mA. For the digital output versions, CANopen, CAN SAE J1939 and SSI protocols are available. The linearity of WB25 series sensor is +/- 0.05% of full scale.

The angular sensing element consists of a magnetic encoder which translates the linear motion into an electrical signal. This highly reliable magnetic encoder is very shock and vibration resistant which allows it to function in demanding environmental conditions. The rugged construction of the WB25 series provides for a long-life even under harsh operating conditions such as those found in off-highway vehicles and construction equipment. The space saving stainless tape design provides a small housing foot print with long measurement ranges.

Protection against combustible dust

ASM has expanded its POSIWIRE® family of rugged cable extension position sensors with the WS12EX series that has a measurement range up to 118 inches.

In locations where combustible dust is present, the maximum allowable surface temperature of installed devices is limited to only 2/3 of the minimum ignition temperature of the surrounding combustible dust. If there is a risk of dust accumulation, further considerations such as the smoldering point of the dust and additional temperature safety distances must be evaluated. The WS12EX series was developed to meet these safety requirements related to combustible dust.

The position sensor housing is rated IP67 and is available with the industry standard analog outputs: 0-10VDC and 4-20mA. The linearity is +/- 0.10 % of full scale with an optional +/- 0.05 % full scale. A precision potentiometer is utilized for the rotary sensing element. The WS12EX series achieves the requirements of EX Dust Explosion-Proof Category 3, Zone 22 for non-conductive dust.

The WS12EX series was designed for numerous industries where combustible dust is present: saw mills (saw dust), food processing (flour dust) and other harsh application (carbon dust).

Stainless steel tape position sensor

ASM has launched the POSITAPE® family of stainless steel tape position sensors with the WB10ZG series that offers a 6.5 ft. (2000 mm) measurement range in a compact 2 x 2 x 3.3 in. housing.

The WB10ZG sensor consists of a specially produced stainless steel tape that is taken up onto a precision machined drum. With its high degree of flexibility, the steel tape offers a very high lifetime and is well suited in applications where pulleys are required due to space constraints that prevent the direct inline measurement. In areas where icing can occur, the flat, smooth surface of the tape also allows for the quick removal of ice accumulation. The standard tape brush continuously wipes the tape surface to remove debris.

This position transducer offers an enclosure rating of IP65 (IP67 with mating connector) and is available with 0.5-4.5V, 0.5-10V and 4-20 mA analog outputs or SSI, CANopen, CAN SAE J1939 digital outputs.

The output linearity is +/- 0.05% full scale over the 6.5 ft. measurement range.

At the heart of this position sensor is a magnetic encoder that translates the linear motion in an electrical signal. A M12 connector provides for a quick electrical connection to be made during installation. The WB10ZG is resistant to 100g/11ms, 100 shocks and 20g 10Hz-2kHz, 10 cycles vibration. The compact, rugged housing and long-life stainless steel tape makes this sensor suitable for use in a wide range of applications with harsh environments and tight locations typically associated with off-highway vehicles and machinery.

Incremental magnetic ring encoder

ASM has announced the addition of new magnetic encoder rings, PMIR7 series, to the POSIROT® family. These incremental encoder magnetic rings are available in three sizes to accommodate different shaft sizes and yield up to 184,320 pulses per revolution in conjunction with the quadrature encoder read head, PMIS4 series. Both units were designed to operate in harsh environments.

This non-contact incremental encoder system consists of a magnetoresistive read head, PMIS4, and a dual channel magnetic ring, PMIR7. The sensor head is completely enclosed in a metal housing and generates the industry standard A, B, Z output pulses for quadrature detection with reference mark. The PMIR7 magnetic rings come in three sizes that can be quickly press-fitted onto 27, 35 or 50 mm shaft diameters. This precise and robust encoder system can generate up to 184,320 pulses per revolution. The side tracking tolerance of this magnetic encoder is +/- 1 mm.

The shielded metal housing of the compact PMIS4 sensor read head offers a high level of protection against EMC interference and thermal overload. The enclosure has an IP67 rating to protect against dirty environments. Since this encoder operates magnetically, the read head still functions even when the magnetic scale is operated in dirty industrial environments with contamination such as oil and dust.

The available ring sizes offer either decade, binary or degree division that produce up to 102,400 pulses per revolution, 131,072 pulses per revolution or 184,320 pulses per revolution, respectively. The operating temperature range spans -40 to +85 C. The available outputs are HTL, TTL and TTL24V with a maximum output frequency of 480 kHz.
