Chain hoist Testing.

Testing of electrical overload protection systems and friction clutches.

The FRKPS chain hoist test set from WIKA, enables measurement of force on friction clutches and electrical overload protection systems in industrial environments. It includes a force transducer with chain adapters and an easy-to-use indication unit in a new, modern design. To test a chain hoist, users hook the force transducer with the appropriate adapters into the chain. The transducer is then pulled upwards with the chain against the bottom of the chain hoist, where it blocks the chain and triggers the friction clutch or overload protection. Users can read the force at which the chain was blocked directly on the indication instrument.

If required, the measured values can also be stored and transmitted to the WIKA software included in the scope of delivery. Users can then create an automatically generated test log on the PC. Thereby the annual inspection required by the EU Machinery Directive (to be replaced by the EU Machinery Regulation from January 2027) can be carried out easily and without the need for test weights.

The FRKPS can be used for load ranges of 40 ... 3,500 kg and measures with a high accuracy of < ±0.5 %. The force transducer is designed as a shear load cell providing the greatest possible insensitivity to parasitic forces and moments. It transmits the course of the measured values to the battery-operated hand-held indicator via a cable. The indicator is characterised by intuitive operation, a high sampling rate, 13 hours of battery runtime and a memory of 30 x 1,000,000 measuring points.

Thanks to centring sleeves in several sizes and chain adapters for chain sizes ranging from 3 x 9 … 11 x 31 mm per DIN ISO 606, the FRKPS is highly versatile. The set is delivered in a modern transport case.

Controlling mine hoists!

ABB Ability™ NGX Hoist Control, just launched, is a global control system enabling mining companies to achieve maximum performance and safety of hoist operations. Building on ABB’s reliable and proven past generations of hoist control systems, it brings new levels of reliability, flexibility and ease of use to smaller companies on greenfield projects or upgrades. It can also help larger companies reduce costs and improve efficiencies through standardization of control systems.

ABB Ability NGX Hoist Control, which is set to be unveiled at Euro Mine Expo 2022* in Sweden next month, is adaptable to any type of hoist and can be used in upgrade projects replacing third-party control systems. The NGX Hoist Operating Station was designed with the latest ergonomic and human factors engineering guidelines and is based on the latest human machine interface (HMI) insights, offering the most modern and intuitive operator interface.

It can be easily integrated with other market leading ABB technologies including ABB Ability™ Safety Plus for hoists – the first fully SIL 3 certified hoist solutions which ensure the highest level of safety – which was first commissioned in 2019 on the world’s largest friction hoists. It is also compatible with advanced digital monitoring service ABB Ability™ Performance Optimization for hoists which continuously tracks the status of a mine hoist and improves uptime, availability, performance and productivity by providing actionable information on key performance indicators (KPIs) and provides remote access to ABB experts at all times.

Optimising hoists in mines.

A new version of ABB Ability Performance Optimization for hoists has been launched by global technology company ABB to meet the need for increased digitalization in the mining industry. The upgraded digital service enables condition based maintenance and a higher level of performance optimization through more sophisticated predictive analytics.

“ABB Ability Performance Optimization for hoists is a key solution and service for harnessing digitalization for optimum condition health, safety, productivity and to support the remote operation of mine hoists. This latest version creates an even more cyber secure bridge between information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) for mine hoist customers. It is an improved product, offering better insights with more KPIs and enables faster response to failure detection through mail notifications,” 
said Bengt Hedlund, Global Service Manager Hoisting at ABB. “As the industry looks to make operations more environmentally sustainable, digital services which support remote operation, such ABB Ability Performance Optimization for hoists, can also play a major role in reducing CO₂ emissions and removing the need for on-site service maintenance visits.”
 

ABB Ability Performance Optimization for hoists 3.1 ensures early detection of hoist abnormality in operations and builds on previous versions to improve uptime, availability, performance and productivity of mine hoists by providing actionable information on key performance indicators (KPIs). Hosted on the ABB Ability™ Edgenius dashboard application, ABB Ability Performance Optimization for hoists enables quick analysis and insights into any plant operation.

The new version offers new KPI settings based on customer and ABB experts’ inputs. New KPIs can be set for service hoist availability, hoist cycle statistics, EMS statistics, brake caliper spring operation times, accumulator pre-charge pressure, deceleration variation, guide rope tension, creep distance and clutching time. Cyber security assessments and solutions for protecting customer data are included.

Predictive analysis of a mine hoist’s condition prevents operations from unexpected, time-consuming and costly shutdowns. Data is automatically collected, segregated and managed, then securely monitored and analyzed to generate actionable insights that can help increase production performance, identify safety hazards and provide optimized maintenance scheduling. ABB experts can analyze the data so that potential problems are identified before they occur, and necessary actions can be made at the right time.
