UV keeps Nirvana pure.

Nirvana Spa in Berkshire is one of Britain's most prestigious spa facilities, frequented by elite athletes and celebrities. The facility has a reputation for using crystal clear natural mineral water drawn from the same pristine source 700 feet beneath the spa. To maintain the purity of the water within each of its nine pools, the spa is using the latest ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems from Hanovia.

The spa has a broad range of pools, including Roman and surf rooms, a plunge pool, fitness pool, outside pool and hydrotherapy pool. Each has a specifically-sized Hanovia UV system installed to treat the water, ensuring the high level of quality and disinfection required.

“The Celestial Floatation Pool, which is the UK’s largest hydrotherapy pool, is unusual because it contains salt imported from the Dead Sea,” commented Neil Phelps, Nirvana’s Maintenance Manager. “We match the specific gravity of the Dead Sea. The high salt concentration makes objects very buoyant in the water and floating in the pool is perfect for spinal alignment. Bathers in the warm, mineral-rich waters are removed from most external stimuli and a gentle current gives the sensation of floating in space. This provides both mental and physical benefits and many sports men and women, including international rugby players, skiers and rowers, use the pool to enhance performance and reduce injury time.”

“UV disinfection systems allow us to run the chlorine at the right levels and there is no way we would be able to achieve the level of water purity without them. As the water temperature is kept at a constant 35°C, which is higher than in leisure pools, there is an increased risk of infection from microorganisms such as bacteria and moulds which thrive in warm water. Microbiological control is a key aspect of the water quality. UV plays an important part in that control and bacteriological checks are carried out regularly.

“Hanovia’s UV systems enable us to achieve exemplary water quality in all of our pools. This, coupled with Hanovia’s outstanding aftersales service, gives us, the maintenance team, the reassurance to maintain the high level of water quality and disinfection required,” concluded Neil.

UV is highly effective at killing any bacteria, viruses or moulds in the water, including Cryptosporidium and its spores, which are chlorine-resistant. This reduces problems associated with chlorine by-products such as chloramines, which are formed when free chlorine reacts with sweat or urine in pool water. Trichloramines in particular are powerful irritants which are responsible for eye and respiratory complaints and the unpleasant ‘chlorine smell’ commonly associated with indoor pools. It also means the water is much clearer than that found in traditionally chlorinated pools.

Each Hanovia UV system installed at Nirvana Spa consists of a stainless steel chamber containing a medium pressure UV lamp housed in a special quartz sleeve to protect it from the pool water. The chambers are carefully designed by Hanovia engineers using advanced flow calculation methods. This ensures maximum performance by making sure all the water flowing through the chambers receives the correct UV dose. UV technology provides a cost-effective and low-maintenance alternative to other water treatment systems such as ozone.

UV disinfection simplifies water treatment.

Berson and Hanovia have jointly launched a new low-pressure UV disinfection system for the treatment of municipal, re-use and waste water. The easy-to-install AmaLine R UV range has been third-party validated, in line with US EPA and NWRI guidelines. It provides effective treatment, while reducing lifecycle costs through being simple to maintain and extremely energy efficient. Unlike other similar systems, the AmaLine has been designed to simplify maintenance, which can be performed by a single operator rather than a crew, and without requiring external lifting equipment.
The AmaLine range is application-optimised in terms of its design and operation, with a flow range of 1-30 MGD (millions of gallons per day). The AmaLine R has a U-shaped chamber that optimises flow to cater for low UV light transmittance (UVT) water quality. This makes it ideal for re-use and waste water applications.

Also available is the AmaLine D range, designed specifically for municipal drinking water, which has a coaxial flow L-shaped chamber, and optimises flow to deliver the most effective disinfection for drinking water applications.

AmaLine has been designed using the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling. A highly efficient chamber and optimised lamp positioning ensure maximum energy efficiency. Optimum distribution of UV intensity throughout the chamber provides effective water treatment.

AmaLine uses LPHO (low pressure high output) amalgam lamp technology that provides variable output ballasts (50 to 100%). This helps to reduce energy consumption further, but also provides greater UV intensity. Shorter physical lengths compared with conventional low-pressure lamps reduces the overall footprint of the system. The ability to leave LPHO lamps on, even when there is no flow, helps to minimise potential disruption to the process. The longer life amalgam lamp helps to extend the periods between servicing.

AmaLine is also much easier to service and maintain. In contrast with alternative solutions, the AmaLine system has been designed to enable a single operator to change lamps, quartz sleeve and wiper blades easily and safely without the need of cranes, hoists or other external lifting equipment. A unique lamp connector, with self-aligning functionality, enables simple and fast lamp replacement, helping to minimise downtime, protect an operator from harm during servicing, and provide assurance of optimal system operation.

Where Berson has been focused on the municipal market and Hanovia on industrial, both companies now will focus on all markets with joint resources. This will now increase the capability to develop products for various applications quicker, and provide extensive support globally. The AmaLine is a platform that has been designed for the municipal market but has been engineered so it can be adapted for specific industrial applications.

Reducing chloramines in swimming pools.

Wycombe Leisure Centre in Buckinghamshire (GB) is using Hanovia’s SwimLine UV disinfection technology to keep chloramines at bay in its three indoor swimming pools. This ensures effective control of these unpleasant by-products of chlorine dosing in indoor pools, which are responsible for the typical ‘chlorine smell’, red, stinging eyes and skin irritations.

Installation at Wycombe Leisure Centre
Three SwimLine systems are installed in total to support the competition pool, community pool and splash pad. The systems utilise Hanovia’s Photon single or multi-lamp medium pressure chamber and automatic wiper technology to provide robust and effective UV disinfection. The wavelength output of the SwimLine’s lamp is optimised specifically for the removal of chloramines.

By better controlling chloramines, the UV systems also produce high quality pool water, reduce corrosion of metal structures and create a healthier environment for bathers. The systems provide effective disinfection from threats like cryptosporidium or Giardia, which are resistant to chlorine, thus giving bathers and operators safe and crystal-clear waters.

Commenting on the Hanovia SwimLine system, Kimberley Jaggard, Operations Manager at Wycombe Leisure Centre said: “Since installing the Hanovia UV systems we have noticed a dramatic improvement in air and water quality in the centre. We have none of the unpleasant smells or irritations associated with traditional chlorination systems. Controlling chloramines has also delivered high quality pool water, no corrosion of metal structures and a healthier environment for bathers.

“The performance of the UV system is impressive and it is very easy to use and maintain. In addition, we have been impressed by Hanovia’s professional after-sales service.”

Hanovia SwimLine systems are available in a range of sizes and treatment capacities to meet different pool sizes. They are designed for easy installation into existing pipework, matching pipe velocities and turnover rates in all pools. UV lamp replacement is also quick and easy, with the system designed to allow easy access, even in small plant rooms.

Keeping your swimming pool clear!

Langley Leisure Centre in Berkshire (GB) is the first leisure centre in that country to use an optimised low energy UV system to treat water for its 25-metre indoor heated pool. The Hanovia SwimLine Ultraviolet Energy Optimised (UVEO) system is helping to provide high quality water that reduces corrosion and creates a healthier environment for bathers, whilst reducing overall energy consumption.

Langley Leisure Centre in Berkshire, England
The new SwimLine UVEO uses up to 60% less power than conventional UV systems, with just a single UV lamp. This means reduced running costs for 24/7 applications such as swimming pools, without compromising on bio-security or chloramine control. The system is optimised specifically for pool bio-safety to ensure chlorine-resistant organisms such as cryptosporidium and giardia are controlled with the optimum UV dose.

Hanovia SwimLine UVEO system
Commenting on the Hanovia UVEO system, a spokesperson from Langley Leisure Centre said: “Since we installed the Hanovia SwimLine system there have been noticeable energy savings. The performance of the system excellent and it is also very easy to use and maintain. Added to that, we have been impressed by the company’s professional after-sales service.

“The optimised medium pressure UV lamp provides excellent chloramine reduction, ensuring the effective control of these unpleasant by-products of chlorine dosing which are responsible for the typical ‘chlorine smell’, red, stinging eyes and skin irritations. Controlling chloramines has also delivered high quality pool water, reduced corrosion of metal structures and a healthier environment for bathers.”

The SwimLine UVEO is available in a range of sizes and treatment capacities to meet the needs of different pool sizes. The system is designed for easy installation into existing pipework, matching pipe velocities and turnover rates for any pool. It is also fitted with an internal auto-wiper which maintains UV output efficiency by regularly cleaning the quartz sleeve housing the UV lamp. Lamp replacement is also quick and easy, with the system designed to allow easy access, even in small plant rooms.

UV is highly effective at killing any bacteria, viruses or moulds in the water, including cryptosporidium and its spores, which are chlorine-resistant. Another major advantage of UV is that it considerably reduces the amount of chlorine required to maintain hygiene levels. It also means the water is much clear than that in traditionally chlorinated pools.

Ensuring bottled beverage safety!

In an increasingly regulated and safety-conscious market, legislation such as the EU Directive for Bottled Water 98/88/EC (1998) drives the beverage industry to meet ever more stringent standards of quality. Microbial growth due to contaminated water or ingredients can cause discolouration, off flavours and shortened shelf-life. The threat of contamination is further increased as manufacturers respond to demands for less chemical additives and preservatives. Effective microbial disinfection of the whole process is therefore essential.
To meet this requirement, Cott Beverages has been using Hanovia UV disinfection technology to treat process water used in the production process. The company decided to use UV technology to ensure final product security prior to mixing and bottling and has been very satisfied with the performance of the UV systems.

“The Hanovia UV systems have been easy to integrate, maintain and operate,” said Chris Prentice, site service engineer at Cott Beverages. “They provide us with absolute insurance before bottling by making sure that we are producing and maintaining a high-quality product, which is essential for our brand.”

Hanovia’s PureLine UV is an intelligent system that is optimised for the beverage industry to simplify the treatment of water, sugar syrup, brine and even reducing chlorine and ozone. Critically, there are no microorganisms known to be resistant to UV – this includes pathogenic bacteria such as listeria, legionella and cryptosporidium (and its spores, which are resistant to chlorination). Unlike chemical treatment, UV does not introduce toxins or residues into process water and does not alter the chemical composition, taste, odour or pH of the fluid being disinfected.

UV is used for both primary disinfection or as a back-up for other purification methods such as carbon filtration, reverse osmosis or pasteurisation. Because UV has no residual effect, the best position for a treatment system is immediately prior to the point of use. This ensures incoming microbiological contaminants are destroyed and there is a minimal chance of post-treatment contamination.

UV disinfection systems are easy to install, with minimum disruption to the plant. They need very little maintenance, the only requirement being the replacement of the UV lamps every 9-12 months, depending on use. This is a simple operation that takes only a few minutes and can be carried out by trained general maintenance staff. Hanovia’s UVCare™ training programme supports businesses like Cott Beverages to make sure servicing is carried out by certified engineers.

UV disinfection in industry.

Hanovia* is to host a webinar aimed at helping manufacturers optimise the removal of chlorine within their water treatment operations. The 60-minute interactive presentation by Tim McDougle, Hanovia’s Sales & Marketing Director and James Hadley Hanovia’s Western European Sales Manager, takes place on the 23rd May 2017 and will outline how UV dechlorination can reduce water treatment maintenance and lifecycle costs while providing enhanced protection against bio-contamination.

Hygienic applications such as pharmaceutical and food and beverage manufacturing desire clean water treatment technologies with minimal bacteria build-up and downtime. Combining pre-treatment with Reverse Osmosis is common practice for removing a broad range of inorganic and organic impurities and the addition of Electro-deionisation (EDI) in Pharmaceutical Purified Water systems guarantees sub-ppm levels of salts.

Although these stable technologies require minimal maintenance, they must be protected from oxidising species that affect performance and lifespan. Removal of free and total chlorine in process lines prior to RO and EDI is essential. To achieve this, two traditional methods exist: Activated Carbon Filtration (ACF) and Sodium Meta-Bisulphite dosing (SMB). Although well proven, these methods demonstrate certain limitations, principally that they are prone to microbial contamination that increases the bio-burden on EDI and RO membranes, leads to increased cleaning frequency and creates higher operating costs.

To help explain how to overcome these issues, the webinar will outline how UV light can be used as a dechlorination technology, replacing the need for ACF and SMB. This helps to deliver optimum dechlorination performance without the problems associated with these traditional technologies. Tim McDougle will begin by looking at the need to remove chlorine, the current technologies used and the issues surrounding them. James Hadley will then provide an overview of UV light, how it dechlorinates, and the advantages it provides over alternative methods.

The webinar will begins at 3pm BST 23rd May 2017. Register here to learn how UV dechlorination can optimise your water treatment process.
