Automation sustainability progress at COP29.

Innovations accelerating energy management, emissions reduction and decarbonisation

Emerson is attending COP29 in Baku, (AZ), participating in Climate Action’s Sustainable Innovation Forum and Hydrogen Transition Summit. Chief sustainability officer Mike Train will share his insights on how automation technologies are helping accelerate the energy transition and the collaboration and investment required to scale breakthrough innovations across emerging clean energy sectors.

Emerson partners with both established industrial companies and new-to-the-world start-ups to advance their commercialisation and sustainability roadmaps. The company’s technologies and services support four key areas: energy source decarbonisation, energy and emissions management, electrification and grid system, and circularity and waste reduction.

“Achieving a sustainable transformation of the global economy by 2050 demands an unprecedented level of collective determination and cooperation among companies, governments and non-profits,” said Train. “We must maintain the resolve to work through challenges and make progress, navigating the policy and economics of the transition, and attracting the next generation of talent to the field.”

Train will speak during COP29 at the below panels:

  • Sustainable Innovation Forum – Powering the Future: Rapid scaling of clean energy for stability and resilience, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 11:25 a.m. (local time).
  • Hydrogen Transition Summit – Informed Policy Frameworks: The role of the private sector in supporting informed and ambitious policy, Friday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m. (local time).

COP29 attendees can explore Emerson’s latest innovations at Stand 102 in the Climate Action Innovation Zone, Baku Marriott Hotel Boulevard. The exhibit will showcase examples of how Emerson’s Boundless Automation™ enables its customers to deploy their decarbonisation strategies faster and more efficiently.

Environmental sustainability is a business imperative for Emerson and its value chain partners – from suppliers and customers to employees and communities. In 2023, with a continued focus on energy efficiency and Scope 1 emission abatement strategies, Emerson achieved a Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity reduction of 52% since 2021. For its locations worldwide, the company has also procured 49% of electricity from renewable sources, progressing toward its goal to source 100% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Contract for Caspian oilfield automation awarded.

A $14 million contract to provide automation technologies for the new Azeri Central East offshore platform in the Caspian Sea has been awarded to Emerson, the latest development in the Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli oilfield.  Emerson will serve as the main automation contractor, providing its Project Certainty methodologies and digital technologies that transform capital project execution to help BP bring this fast-track project onstream in 2023.

“This latest project builds on the successful collaboration between BP and Emerson on the West Chirag and Shah Deniz Stage 2 developments,” said Jim Nyquist, group president for Emerson’s systems and software business. “Our extensive experience helping organisations achieve capital project success has enabled us to become a trusted partner to digitally transform mega projects such as Azeri Central East.”

Digital twin solutions and cloud engineering services, part of Emerson’s Project Certainty methodologies, will help accelerate project execution. Emerson’s digital twin solution enables virtual testing and system integration while the platform is being built and provides a simulated environment for platform operators to train, helping ensure a safe, smooth start-up and ongoing operational excellence. Cloud engineering reduces engineering costs and time by enabling global teams to collaborate and engineer in parallel, regardless of location.

Emerson will apply its portfolio of automation software and services to help BP achieve greater production and safe operations. This includes Emerson’s DeltaV™ automation system that controls critical safety functions in addition to wellhead production, drilling and the transfer of oil and gas to the onshore Sangachal Terminal.

Automation technologies also anticipate safety risks and enable remote monitoring, which reduces exposure of people and extends intervals between major maintenance turnarounds. Wired and wireless networks will connect more than 1,000 Emerson measurement instruments to monitor pressure, flow, temperature and pipework corrosion. Emerson will also provide all critical control, emergency shutdown and isolation valves, connected by its digital positioning technology.
