Photonics award.

Recognised for revolutionising multi-photon microscopy with automated femtosecond fibre coupling.

The prestigious 2025 Laser World of Photonics Innovation Award in the Biophotonics and Medical Engineering category for its revolutionary Femtofibre ultra FD laser system has been awarded to Toptica. Developed to simplify multi-photon microscopy, this compact platform offers turnkey femtosecond beam delivery via optical fibre – enhancing safety and operational ease in modern bioimaging labs.

The Femtofibre ultra FD provides robust, hands-free femtosecond laser delivery using hollow-core fibre technology combined with Topticas proprietary COOLAC auto-alignment system. Originally developed for the iChrome fluorescence microscopy platform, COOLAC now brings automated fibre coupling to the ultrafast regime – making multi-photon imaging faster, safer, and more accessible.

“Our goal was to remove complexity from high-performance imaging,” said Luisa Hofmann, Product Manager Biophotonics & Materials at Toptica. “With the Femtofibre ultra FD, users can focus on their science – not on beam paths.”

The award was presented by Europa Science Ltd and the Laser World of Photonics jury, recognising the system’s impact on both clinical and research imaging environments. With support for popular wavelengths (780/920/1050 nm), the Femtofibre ultra FD is compatible with common fluorophores and optimised for deep-tissue imaging and nonlinear excitation techniques.
