The conductor channel reinvented for low voltage bolted connectors
The unique heart shape of the new. LV bolted connector from Pfisterer offers advantages when it comes to installation. It is suitable for all conductor shapes and types – including 120° sector. At the same time, the electrical and mechanical properties of the connectors have been significantly improved. The result is a new generation of bolted connectors that sets new standards.
With an innovative heart shaped conductor channel, the new low voltage bolted connectors up to 1 kV from Pfisterer solve several installation challenges at once: The special design is suitable for all kinds of conductor materials and types, including 120° sector conductors. It is often difficult to achieve a secure bolted connection with these conductors in connectors with round conductor channel, and they have to be laboriously crimped round prior to installation. The large heart shaped conductor channel from Pfisterer solves this problem, as it is perfectly suited to all conductor shapes. The installation bolts end flush with the straight top edge of the conductor channel. This also makes it easier to insert crushed or protruding conductor ends and prevents the individual wires from catching or snagging. Even under difficult installation conditions, the connector fits well over the conductor and ensures reliable positioning of the conductor under the bolts.
“With our new low voltage connectors, we have developed a practical and intelligent solution. Reliable and easy handling was our top priority,” explains Jens Keller, product manager at Pfisterer. “Along with that, we have implemented mechanical and electrical improvements.”
Besides the new conductor channel shape, numerous technical details from Pfisterer’s tried-and-tested SICON connector series have been adapted for the new low voltage solution. For example, integrated conductor channel grooves in the connector penetrate the oxidation layer on aluminum cables, ensure linear contact, and simultaneously increase the conductor pull-out force. In addition, a two-stage shear bolt with hexagon head ensures minimal bolt protrusion and also prevents the bolt head getting stuck in the tool when it shears off. A rotating friction disc at the end of the bolt avoids damaging individual wires during installation and ensures optimum contact forces over the entire service life of the connection, regardless of the conductor material. Alternatively, the connectors are also available with grub screws that can be undone.
The new low voltage connectors with heart shaped conductor channel are available in six sizes from 10 to 35 mm diameter and four variants – optionally with a large inspection hole or oil stop, as well as shear bolts or grub screws. The inspection hole makes it easier to position the conductor ends in the connector, and also enables preassembly in a parking position for later completion of the connection.
The oil stop variant provides a liquid and gas barrier – for use of cables with oilsoaked insulation, for example – as well as a secure stop for the conductor ends.
All low voltage connectors of the new generation are suitable for heat-shrinkable joints in accordance with DIN SPEC 47640 and meet the corresponding bolt protrusion requirements. No rework is necessary to shrink over the connectors. In addition, the new low voltage connectors from Pfisterer are mechanically and electrically tested to IEC 61238-1-1 class A.
