VA meters for low flow!

New options for low flow measurement with variable area flowmeters have been introduced by Krohne: the H250 M40 with its extensive range of features and options is now available for very low flow rates, and the purgemeters DK32, DK34 and DK37/M8M have been re-assessed as SIL2 compliant.

The new H250 M40 low flow option combines the small measuring cones of the purgemeter DK37 with the extensive range of process connections, communication options and Ex-approvals of H250 M40. The new option is suitable for liquid flows starting at 0.16 l/h / 0.04 GPH and gas flows starting at 1.6 l/h / 0.06 SCFH.

Formerly rated SIL1, the purgemeters DK32, DK34 and DK37/M8M have been re-assessed as SIL2 compliant according to IEC 61508-2:2010 for the versions with NAMUR safety switches as well as for the NAMUR standard switches. Optional mechanical flow controllers or flange adapters are included in the SIL compliance. The SIL declarations of conformity and SIL safety manuals are available in the download center on their website.

4…20mA output for VA flowmeters!

With the new option "WIM", a 4...20mA electrical output signal is now available for the Krohne variable area flowmeter VA40. While the flow rate with these glass devices could previously be read only locally, the 4...20mA output option allows for transmission of the measured value for control or evaluation purposes.

With VA40 WIM version, the height of the float is converted into an electrical signal via a Hall sensor chain. This signal can be used for a PLC/DCS, or to record the measured value over a certain period with a data logger. Along with each VA40 WIM, KROHNE supplies the calibration curve, allowing the customer to assign the exact flow value to any current value.

VA40 variable area flowmeters are used for the volume flow measurement of liquids or gases. The glass measuring tube enables visual inspection of the medium to evaluate properties such as gas entrainments or colouring. Typical applications include measurement of flushing, purging or inerting gases, heating and cooling circuits, gas measurement in industrial furnaces, or other basic applications in machine building and process industries, where this purely mechanical measuring principle has proven itself for almost 100 years.

All connection variants of the VA40 are also available with the WIM option. With the robust stainless steel taps, the maintenance-free device is mounted directly into the pipeline using flange, screw, clamp or hose connections. An installation in hazardous areas according to ATEX II2G Ex ia IIC T6 Gb and ATEX II2D Ex ia IIIC T85°C Db is possible. Retrofitting the WIM option to existing devices is not possible.

VA meter approved for hazardous areas!

With the north american FM approvals for the ignition protection types „intrinsically safe“ (IS) and "non-incendive" (NI), Krohne has now received the last pending approvals for hazardous areas for the H250 M40 variable area flowmeter. Since its introduction in 2011, the H250 M40 has achieved more than 30 approvals worldwide for hazardous gas and dust areas, including ATEX, IECEx, usFMc, NEPSI, INMETRO, KGS, GOST-R and PESO/CCOE.

H250 M40 combines the main types of explosion protection in one device: it can be used in any suitable application that requires intrinsically safe or non-incendive wiring strategies or as well for dust-ignition or explosion proof installations. Together with the worldwide approvals, the flowmeter is therefore the first choice for large international companies that have a stringent explosion protection strategy for all plants but also need the respective local approvals. The same goes for OEMs that can fulfill requirements of different customers with just one device.

All available indicator variants can be supplied with all available approvals: starting with pure mechanical flow indicators, the devices can easily be upgraded with 1 or 2 limit switches (NAMUR, Transistor or Reed), a 4...20mA signal output with HART, a graphical LCD with totalizer and pulse output or finally with a digital, bus-powered communication interface according to FOUNDATION Fieldbus or PROFIBUS PA standard – all onsite, without interrupting the process. H250 M40 is also the first variable area flowmeter to offer a stainless steel housing with explosion proof (Ex d/XP) enclosure, dedicated for the oil&gas industry.

All approvals can be publicly accessed via the Krohne download centre.

Flow measurement in safety-critical applications

The new RAGN Glass Rotameter® from Yokogawa is designed for the continuous flow measurement of liquids and gases in safety-critical applications where extended operating life and virtually maintenance-free operation are required.

With an FMEDA (Failure Modes, Effects & Diagnostics Analysis) report available for SIL (Safety Integrity Level) loop applications, the new unit has been assessed to SIL 1 according to the reworked IEC 61508:2010 standard and also complies with the Machinery Directive ISO 13849-1 standard.
The RAGN Glass Rotameter® resists highly corrosive media, comes in an all-stainless-steel housing, and offers measuring ranges from 2 ml/h to 10 m³/h of water and 0.1 l/h to 160 m³/h of air. The measuring glass tube is equipped with an easy-to-read scale highlighted by a yellow background and protected by a rotating splinter shield preventing glass splinters or aggressive media from escaping to the front in the event of glass breakage.

The modular design allows limit switches to be easily retrofitted to initiate minimum or maximum flow alarms when the magnetic float has reached or exceeded the limit switch position. Ease of wiring is ensured by an optional cable connection box which accommodates different process connections and sizes.

The mechanical design of the Rotameter® offers a number of benefits in terms of optimum productivity and reduced energy consumption. The relatively low pressure loss results in low pumping costs and energy savings. Moreover, Rotameters work without power, and under normal operating conditions they are maintenance free and have a virtually unlimited lifetime.

Yokogawa has placed great significance on the future sustainability of this product at every stage of the product lifecycle. The new RAGN can be completely disassembled and uses only recyclable materials only. The design also uses a large number of standard components from other Yokogawa flow products, leading to synergy in production and to resource and energy conservation.

Liquid & gas flowmeter

Yokogawa, "the home of the original Rotameter," has introduced the new Glass Rotameter RAGN, designed to offer an unlimited lifetime combined with safe and virtually maintenance-free operation. The RAGN resists highly corrosive media and is used for the continuous flow measurement of liquids and gases.

Yokogawa is the first supplier to completely provide safety excellence to all applications for glass and metal Rotameters based on FMEDA. The RAGN with reed switches has been assessed to SIL 1 acc. to the reworked IEC 61508:2010 and complies with the Machinery Directive ISO 13849-1 standard.

When the original Rotameter (or variable area flowmeter) was developed in 1909 by Karl Küppers, the importance of the variable area meter was quickly recognized. Due to the Rotameter mechanical principle, continuous flow measurement was possible for the first time. The simple principle, that a float rises inside a conically glass tube and its position on a scale can be read as the flow rate, has not changed. Rotameters have been continuously developed and optimized to meet the requirements of the modern process industry. They are still popular in all industries and customers value its reliability and trouble-free operation.

The RAGN comes in an all stainless steel design and offers the widest measuring ranges from 2
ml/h – 10 m³/h water and 0.1 l/h – 160 m³/h air. The measuring glass tube is equipped with an
easy-to-read-scale highlighted by a yellow background and protected by a splinter shield. The
modular design limit switches can be easily retrofitted and are used to indicate minimum or
maximum flow alarms, by outputting a signal when the magnetic float has reached or exceeded
the limit switch position. An optional cable connection box is available for simple wiring. The
Yokogawa RAGN lineup combines multiple process connections and sizes in a modern design.

In these days when environmental management has finally found its way into our minds and
corporations, the pure mechanical principle of the Rotameter regains even more momentum.
For manufacturers it is important to optimize productivity, consume less energy and reduce
energy costs. Rotameters generally have a very low pressure loss compared to many other flow
measuring principles, and therefore consume less energy. This helps achieve sustainability by
being a key aspect of environmental management. With common applications and normal
operating conditions, they are maintenance free and have an unlimited lifetime.
