Water quality service extended.

Thames Water Utilities has extended the term of Meteor Communications' Framework Agreement for the supply of water quality monitoring equipment and services for Final Effluent Monitoring.

The Framework extension will run until September 2027, and covers the provision of ESNET monitoring systems with associated calibration, maintenance and data services via the MeteorCloud® platform.

Commenting on the contract extension, Meteor’s MD Matt Dibbs said: “These systems are primarily used to monitor final effluent water quality at wastewater treatment plants. ESNET provides instant, real time, high resolution Final Effluent Water Quality data to enable Thames Water to gain enhanced visibility of their works’ operations, and effectively manage treatment processes.”

ESNET systems can be deployed in minutes and are carbon neutral in operation, with the majority solar powered. As such they represent an extremely cost-effective approach to providing high quality, real-time water quality data from any location.

In response to demand from the water industry, regulators and environmental consultants, Meteor Communications is investing heavily in the resources that deliver remote water quality data. Matt says: “These commitments from Thames Water and others, reflect the confidence that customers have in our ability to deliver real-time data to enhance process efficiency and environmental protection.”

Sniffing the way to environmental conformity

Thames Water uses analysers to meet stringent environmental standards

Mogden Sewage Treatment Works is one of five in the London (GB) area being upgraded by Thames Water, to ensure the stricter treatment standards to be introduced by its regulator, the Environment Agency, in 2013 are met. As Mogden is situated in a densely populated area and part of the upgrade project includes modifying the digesters, Thames Water has added new odour monitors around this area, which all use industry-leading Jerome hydrogen sulphide analysers and are linked to the SCADA network. ABLE supplied the eight Jerome 631-XE analysers used to expand the number of monitors from the five existing boundary monitors to 13, all of which are located in strategic positions around the site.

Exclusively available in Britain and Ireland from specialist supplier of process control solutions and analytical instrumentation, ABLE Instruments & Controls Ltd., the Jerome range of hydrogen sulphide analysers reliably offer the resolution, accuracy and range to measure the concentration of hydrogen sulphide to meet the stringent trigger levels set out in the site’s odour management plan.

All 13 odour monitoring systems consist of an IP67 enclosure housing a Jerome hydrogen sulphide analyser, with an air sampling inlet pipe, a thermostatically controlled enclosure heater to maintain the temperature in cold weather, and a power supply designed, built and supplied by ABLE Instruments & Controls Ltd. Each analyser samples the ambient air every 5 minutes and transmits a 4-20mA analogue signal to the site’s SCADA system. Should any measurement exceed the very strict 15ppb (parts per billion) limit, this is displayed in the central control room indicating which analyser has created the alarm. Thus investigations can be carried out quickly in targeted locations.

While some hydrogen sulphide analysers suffer from cross interference induced errors relating to the presence of sulphur dioxide, water, carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, the rugged Jerome with its patented gold film sensor, offers a very high specificity to hydrogen sulphide enabling accurate readings down to 3ppb with a resolution of 1ppb. Designed originally with an integral rechargeable battery pack as a portable unit for immediate detection and measurement, the Jerome 631-XE offers an optional data logging module for unattended sampling as well as 4-20mA or 0-2V analogue outputs.
The latest Jerome Hydrogen Sulphide analyser is the J605 which features a longer life battery, on-board data logging and USB communication, as well as being easier to use and maintain.

DO2 in Thames waste!

Analytical Technology  has been awarded a new three-year framework agreement by Thames Water, seeing off eight competitors during the bid process. The new agreement will see Analytical Technology installing its optical dissolved oxygen monitors across multiple Thames Water wastewater treatment works in order to improve process control. This new framework builds on the existing relationship between the organisations and demonstrates Analytical Technology’s commitment to servicing the British water industry.

During the bid, which involved nine competitive instrumentation providers, Thames Water was impressed by Analytical Technology’s Q45D-ODO monitor’s capability as well as the commercial services offered by the vendor. Analytical Technology was required to meet a rigorous vendor assessment standard which showed that the company had provided excellent customer support for their disinfection monitors already installed within Thames Water. Analytical Technology also demonstrated capital cost savings as well as project and whole-life savings, which will be achieved through lower maintenance and reduced cost for spares.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most critical parameters in the activated sludge process and tighter consent targets now mean that utility companies including Thames Water need to review instrumentation to ensure that all wastewater treatment works are fully compliant. Analytical Technology’s optical dissolved oxygen monitor has been designed to provide reliable DO control while keeping maintenance to a minimum. The monitor is based on fluorescence quenching technology and provides continuous monitoring with virtually no servicing required.

Conventional oxygen sensors are often affected by process coating and any material that slows the diffusion of oxygen into the reaction cell will cause an error in the oxygen reading. Unlike traditional dissolved oxygen monitors, Analytical Technology’s Q45D-ODO contains an Auto-Clean function which generates a series of high pressure air blasts to remove contaminants from the face of the sensor and eliminate errors caused by fouling. The Q45D-ODO’s Auto-Clean capability will enable Thames Water to achieve continuous and reliable DO measurement without the risk of sensor fouling.

Garry Tabor, Sales Director at Analytical Technology, comments: “Dissolved oxygen monitoring is an essential process for water utility companies such as Thames Water. Analytical Technology supplies all Thames Water disinfection monitors, and its proven supply record over the years of the successful partnership means this new agreement reinforces our strong position as leading instrumentation providers within the UK water industry.”
