Sustainable biofuels production.

Emerging renewable fuels leader to implement advanced technologies to help meet global demand for sustainable aviation and diesel fuels.

DG Fuels has chosen Emerson to provide comprehensive automation and project engineering to help transportation sector decarbonisation efforts through the production of advanced biofuels.

To help address the more than 25% of global emissions caused by transportation, DG Fuels’ mission is to provide ‘drop-in’ cellulosic sustainable aviation fuels at scale, then expand into renewable or green diesel fuels. Its advanced conversion process creates fuels that can be used in existing aviation and vehicle engines, achieving three times greater yield from biomass feedstock when compared to traditional biofuels production processes.

“Technology and innovation are the foundation of bringing our innovative fuels conversion process to scale,” said Michael Darcy, DG Fuels CEO. “Partnering with Emerson for its project expertise and automation portfolio gives us confidence in achieving our bold vision of being a global leader in synthetic jet and diesel fuel production.”

Chosen for its deep automation project engineering and execution, backed by the industry’s most comprehensive automation portfolio, Emerson will provide DG Fuels with a suite of advanced sensing, control, systems, equipment monitoring and production optimisation technologies and software that enable safe, reliable and sustainable production.

“Sustainable aviation fuel is a critical step in the energy transition of the transportation sector,” said Mike Train, Emerson’s chief sustainability officer. “Meaningful progress will require innovative solutions across multiple sources of energy. We look forward to supporting DG Fuels’ mission of creating high-yield, high-quality biomass-derived fuels at scale.”

DG Fuels’ previously announced agreements with aviation leaders for sustainable aviation fuels development and supply include Air France KLM, Delta, Airbus and GE Aviation.

Rapidly increase for biofuels.

Global renewable fuels leader will implement advanced technologies to accelerate its digital transformation and meet global demand

Emerson has been selected to support Neste’s digital transformation of its expanded refinery in Tuas (SG).  Emerson’s automation systems and software will help Neste deliver high-performance, efficient operations, supporting Neste’s plans to increase production by up to 1.3 million tons per annum by 2023.

“By incorporating a digital foundation, advanced analytics and mobile collaboration capabilities into its expanded refinery’s operations starting from its construction phase, Neste is well positioned for long-term operational excellence,” said Ron Martin, president for Emerson’s process systems and solutions business.

Neste is the world’s largest producer for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel produced from renewable waste and residue raw materials. At the end of 2018, Neste made a strategic decision to expand its production facility in Singapore via the Singapore Expansion Project. On top of its existing 1.3 million tons annual production capacity of renewable diesel, the expanded refinery will have additional capacity to produce up to 1 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable raw materials for polymers and chemicals, supporting the company’s goal to reduce customers’ greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons annually by 2030.

To ensure the construction of the Neste Singapore Expansion Project is on time and on budget, Emerson is working with Neste to incorporate its Project Certainty methodology, the company’s approach to ensuring successful capital project execution. Emerson will help Neste complete automation system implementation smoothly to bring Neste’s expanded refinery on-line by 2023. Cloud engineering capabilities enable global engineering teams to collaborate remotely to optimise project designs and accelerate project schedules. Smart Commissioning software automates device commissioning, enabling faster, smoother start-up of the production.

Neste will apply Emerson’s DeltaV™ automation system and software to control production for efficient performance and to deliver on-demand remote access to data and analytics. Emerson’s advanced systems, software, analytics and mobility tools – part of its Plantweb™ digital ecosystem – establish the foundation to digitally transform operations by turning relevant data into new operational insights and actionable information that empower better decision-making.

Automation concept for paddle mixers cuts electricity costs.

The biogas plant operated by AgriGen Limited in Britain supplies around 5000 households with power and heat. Technology from Siemens used to control and automate the plant has enabled a 50 percent reduction in the plant’s electrical energy consumption.
Ingenious twist!
To implement the new plant operated by AgriGen, a consortium comprising large-scale agricultural businesses based in Suffolk (GB), Siemens joined forces with Thöni, an Austrian industrial group specializing in the generation of bioenergy. Designed to generate biogas, the plant uses a special method developed by Thöni. This involves continuously filling fluid and solid matter into a wet fermenter, which is at the heart of natural gas production technology, with the aid of a special feeding technique. The liquid substrate is fed into the fermenter by a pump and renewable resources are added by means of a solids loading device. To enable precise monitoring and simple automation of the plant, Siemens supplied the Simatic S7-300 controller, Simatic ET200S distributed I/O and visualization software WinCC V7.0. The I/O and Sinamics frequency converter are linked via Profibus. Precise height, pressure and temperature measurements are performed using the radar level transmitters Sitrans LR200, Pointek CLS300/500, Sitrans P DSIII and Sitrans T from Siemens.

The plant’s ingenious twist
The unusual feature of this plant are the specially designed paddles used to keep the material moving and well homogenized. This prevents sediment settling on the floor of the fermenter and stops any potential suspended particles forming floating layers, so creating the optimum conditions for biological decomposition of the materials. The paddle mixers are driven by a planetary gear and Sinamics G120 frequency converter. The smaller propeller mixers are also fitted with Sirius 3EW40 soft starters. The optimum automation concept in combination with the patented paddle mixer has reduced the plant’s electricity consumption by 50 percent.

Control system order for large 2nd generation bioethanol plant

Yokogawa América do Sul has received an order to supply the control system and field instruments for the São Miguel dos Campos second-generation bioethanol plant.

This plant will have a production capacity of 82 million litres per year and is being constructed by GranBio in São Miguel dos Campos, Alagoas state (BR). As opposed to first-generation facilities that produce bioethanol from food products such as corn and sugarcane, this plant will rely on second-generation non-food sources such as woodchips and straw. São Miguel dos Campos is the first plant of its type to be constructed in the southern hemisphere, and it will be one of the world’s largest such facilities, in terms of production capacity. It is scheduled to start commercial operation in early 2014.

As the main automation contractor Yokogawa has been involved in this project from the FEED stage, performing the basic design for a control system and field instrumentation solution that will reduce costs and improve production efficiency throughout the lifecycle of the plant. Yokogawa will supply the CENTUM® VP integrated production control system to control plant facilities such as reaction tanks and distillation units, and a variety of field instrumentation and equipment including FOUNDATION™ fieldbus enabled ADMAG AXF magnetic flowmeters, DPharp EJA series pressure/differential pressure transmitters, and control valves. Yokogawa América do Sul will be responsible for delivery, engineering, and operator training.

Satoshi Yoshida, the President of Yokogawa America do Sul, comments as follows: “Brazil is a dominant player in the bioethanol market, second only to the United States. The biofuel market is steadily growing, and second-generation biofuel is attracting attention as an environmentally friendly energy source. Utilizing its accumulated control and instrumentation experience and know-how, Yokogawa will capitalize on the vast opportunities for growth in the renewable energy sector, a key target industry. In its role as a main automation contractor, Yokogawa will provide the latest plant control solutions and project execution services to the renewable energy sector in Brazil and other markets, and thereby work for a more sustainable future.”
