IS communication standards
CAN in Automation (CiA) has released the CiA 102 and 103 CAN physical layer specifications for industrial automation respectively intrinsically safe capable communication as Draft Standards. The free downloadable CiA 102 specifies eight bit-rates for CAN high-speed networks (from 1 Mbit/s to 10 kbit/s) compliant with ISO 11898-2 or ISO 11898-5 (with low-power capability). The specification also includes some guidelines for the physical medium attachment (PMA) sub-layer, and the medium dependent interface (MDI) sub-layer. This covers device and system design hints. The updated specification is also the base for CANopen networks using high-speed transceiver chips.
The CiA 103 specification describes a framework for CAN high-speed networks used in explosive environments. It has been developed in cooperation with CPAC (Center for Process Analytical Technology) at the University of Washington, Seattle (USA). The intrinsically safe CAN physical layer specification requires 3,3-V transceiver chips and micro-controllers with on-chip CAN modules. Sensor manufacturers supplying for gas chromatographs have implemented the framework firstly. Devices compliant to CiA 103 received already approvals for hazardous area class 1 by North American and other authorities.
The specifications are downloadable from CiA’s website.
