Shows & conference cancelled.

For the past 35 years, Sensors Expo & Conference has established itself as the engineering community dedicated to sensors, connectivity, and IoT. Together with co-located events Embedded Technologies Expo & Conference, Autonomous Technologies Conference, and IoT Implementation Forum, Sensors Expo & Conference provides a focus on design, implementation, and disruption, bringing together engineers, technology influencers, investors, analysts, and more to share ideas, learn, network, and keep the industry moving forward.
Questex, the parent company of Sensors Expo & Conference, Embedded Technologies Expo & Conference, Autonomous Technologies Conference, and the IoT Implementation Forum, has announced that due to the COVID-19 circumstances, they have been forced to cancel the events.

The state of California has prohibited all professional, social and community gatherings until further notice, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The events were scheduled to run November 16-18 in San Jose, CA.

They are planning to resume these events at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, CA, on June 28-30, 2021.

Sensor solutions for the Internet of Things & M2M

Hoffman+Krippner's unique SensoInk and SensoFoil intelligent sensing technologies can be used for Internet of Things applications such as process automation, position tracking and real time supply chain support.  They plan to show these at the Sensors Expo next week.

SensoInk is an innovative, reliable and highly accurate sensing solution based on printed polymer pastes. SensoInk is a 5V analog solution with low power requirements and operates at 5V.
By using polymer thick film technology, SensoInk is extremely flexible, and can be printed as potentiometers, resistors, switches or keyboard contacts on circuit boards or electronic components.

It enables device developers to quickly and easily implement individual specifications without sacrificing quality. By using SensoInk, there are no negative electromagnetic effects (Electromagnetic compatibility). Only two components are required for signal transformation: a printed potentiometer track on a carrier material (e.g. FR4 or PET foil) and a conductive wiper.
Sensofoil® thin-film membrane potentiometers are the world's most reliable membrane position sensors. SensoFoil offers a flat design of 0.5 mm to 1 mm, repeat accuracy of 1mm to 10µm,  easy to achieve redundancy and problem-free device integration. The standard linear Sensofoil is available in lengths of 50 mm up to 500 mm, 40mm wide rotary, and custom sizes and shapes. Sensofoil is available in PET (ultra-thin), Magnet (contactless – long lifetime) or Hybrid technology (extended lifetime and temperature range).

“To detect how the state of the internet-connected "thing" changes, an electronic evaluation of the initial state must be conducted,” says Jens Kautzor, CEO of Hoffman + Krippner, Inc. “With our sensors you can very affordably and accurately measure changes, detect positions, or count objects.”

Is there enough milk in the fridge? Is there enough coffee in the coffee maker? Has a hotel guest taken anything from the minibar? For example, a drink gets removed from the minibar. This condition is detected (the missing bottle) by a Sensofoil sensor. The web connected sensor, combined with the intelligent software, guarantee that the correct products and quantities will be reflected on the hotel bill. This is just one of hundreds of smart IoT and Machine to Machine applications made possible using SensoInk and SensoFoil.

New sensor technologies on show!

Hoffmann-Krippner will be at the upcoming Sensors Expo event in Long Beach (CA USA 9-11 June 2015). In addition to demoing and launching their  SensoFoil and SensoInk sensing technologies, they will be demonstrating high performance sensor technologies from three of their German partners.

This includes Altmann GmbH for advanced and high-quality potentiometers used for a variety of industrial equipment controls, steering and engine control for shipping, engine control for heavy equipment, and high precision wind detection.

At Sensors expo, Hoffmann-Krippner will also be showing sensor solutions from Inelta GmbH that include highly sensitive yet robust LVDT sensors and load cells used for a variety of industrial, welding and testing equipment.

Hoffmann-Krippner will also be demonstrating sensor solutions from Pil GmbH – a leading supplier of highly accurate and robust ultrasonic sensors used for industrial automation.

According to Jens Kautzor, CEO of Hoffman + Krippner, Inc., “We provide midsize German companies who have products with a synergy to ours a channel in the US. These are high quality products that are engineered exceptionally well, all made in Germany. In some cases these companies are actually the real manufacturers behind some very well-known industry brands. So in a sense we cut the middleman - and with recent exchange rate developments - we bring very competitive priced, highest quality products to the US“.

    Epic gold!

Plessey Semiconductors wins Best of Sensors Expo award for its EPIC sensor technology
Sensor technology detects changes in electric field, in contact, at a distance, through clothing and even through walls

Plessey Semiconductors was awarded a Gold Award at the “Best of Sensors Expo” ceremony at Sensors Expo for its Electric Potential Integrated Circuit (EPIC) sensor technology.  The entries were judged on the basis of potential impact, application, distinctiveness, timeliness and availability.

"The nominations demonstrated exceptional innovation, integration and ease of use," said Melanie Martella, Executive Editor of Sensors Magazine, who presented the awards.

    16 element array for EPIC
The EPIC sensor is a completely new area of sensor technology that measures changes in an electric field in a similar way to a magnetometer detecting changes in a magnetic field.  The EPIC sensor, which requires no physical or resistive contact to make measurements, will enable innovative new products to be made such as medical scanners that are simply held close to a patient’s chest to obtain a detailed ECG reading or devices that can ‘see’ through walls.  The sensor can be integrated on a chip with other features such as data converters, digital signal processing and wireless communications capability.

Michael LeGoff, Plessey Semiconductors’ MD, said, “We are delighted that EPIC technology is being recognised as a truly innovative technology that can be used to create genuinely novel and ingenious products.”

The technology works at normal room temperatures and functions as an ultra high, input impedance sensor that acts as a highly stable, extremely sensitive, contactless digital voltmeter to measure tiny changes in the electric field down to milliVolts.  Most places on Earth have a vertical electric field of about 100 Volts per metre.  The human body is mostly water and this interacts with the electric field.  EPIC technology is so sensitive that it can detect these changes at a distance and even through a solid wall.  Thus, for example, in a fire situation, it could be possible to determine if there any people in a smoke filled room before opening the door.

The first EPIC product, the PS25150, is an ultra high impedance, solid state ECG (electrocardiograph) sensor for applications such as non-critical patient monitoring, emergency response diagnostics, sports and health products and will be sampling in September 2011.  It can be used as a dry contact ECG sensor without the need for potentially dangerous low impedance circuits across the heart.  Key to this is that EPIC detects the voltage change in muscles and nerves without electrical contact so there is no need to have electrodes on or in the body to detect current changes. The resolution available is as good as or better than conventional wet electrodes.  The device uses active feedback techniques to both lower the effective input capacitance of the sensing element (Cin) and boost the input resistance (Rin).  These techniques are used to realise a sensor with a frequency response suitable for both diagnostic and monitoring ECG applications.  The total voltage gain of the system is a function of both the input coupling capacitance (variable) and the internal sensor configuration.
