Subminiature photoelectric sensors.

Advanced design features and can be installed in tight spaces, overcoming the limitations of more costly technologies.

IDEC Corporation is expanding its already extensive photoelectric (PE) sensor portfolio with the new SA1N series of space-saving subminiature PE sensors. The SA1N series provides high accuracy and performance, and it is available in compact barrel and block form factors.

(not to scale)
Smaller and superior sensing.
For industrial equipment, the intersecting trends of increasing automation and reduced installation space mean that designers need compact and high-performance technologies for discrete sensing applications. General-purpose sensors simply don’t fit, and other technologies such as fiber optic devices are more costly and require separate amplifiers which complicate installation requirements. Even as acceptable form factors shrink, there remains an escalating need for better accuracy, detection distances, and response times.

To meet these needs, IDEC has added the SA1N series of subminiature PE sensors to its product lineup. The SA1N sensors are available in two versions:

  • A barrel-mount fiber-type diffuse-reflective infrared LED style, secured with M6 nuts through a mounting hole
  • A block-type convergent-reflective red LED style, secured with two mounting holes located at a 14mm pitch

Both versions are all-in-one devices with built-in amplifiers and sensitivity adjustment control. The barrel-mount version has a 3 to 50mm sensing range, while the block-type can detect over a 5 to 30mm sensing range. Both models are available in NPN or PNP light-on configurations, and both provide a rapid 0.5msec maximum response time.

The sensors each come with flexible 2-meter pigtail wiring, functioning at standard 24VDC with minimal current draw. They operate over a wide -25 to +55DegC temperature range. The barrel-mount version uses a stainless-steel housing and plastic encapsulation to achieve an IP67 rating, while the block-type is rated at IP64.

Effective detection for more applications.
Many types of production line equipment and manufacturing machinery—ranging across industries as varied as medical, food & beverage, and more—require positive presence detection of machine components and positioning/counting of products. The SA1N series of subminiature PE sensors will fit into the limited space available for these types of applications, and it offers a favorable price/performance ratio compared with other more esoteric technology options. The IDEC SA1N series of subminiature PE sensors are part of a much larger sensing solutions portfolio, providing flexible design options for a wide variety of applications. As with all its products, IDEC offers free tech support for the SA1N, with no service or support contract required.

Miniature photoelectric sensor family.

Improvment on current models with a standardized ASIC design, delivering faster responses and better detection.

The SA2E general-purpose photoelectric (PE) sensor family, in five major models, each which improve on or replace proven SA1E products has been introduced by IDC Corporation. A new ASIC, common to the entire offering, provides a significantly improved price/performance ratio, while delivering better response times and more capable detection.

SA2E PE sensors are offered in five major variations:

  • T: Through-beam, for detecting objects passing between emitter/receiver pairs.
  • P: Polarized retro-reflective, for detecting objects passing between the receiver and a reflector, even in difficult lighting conditions.
  • D: Diffused-reflective, for detecting targets by the light reflected from the target.
  • B: Background suppression reflective, for improved and reliable detection of a wide variety of targets by the light reflected by the target.
  • N: Small beam reflective, for close detection of small targets.

The SA2E sensors generally improve response times to 0.5ms, compared with 1.0ms for previous generation models, for better detection of smaller and faster moving objects. Sensors are switchable between “light-on” and “dark-on” operating modes, and applicable models have an on-board sensitivity or range adjustment potentiometer. Depending on the model, sensing distances can range up to 20m for through-beam, up to 5m for retro-reflective, and between 10mm and 1000mm for other reflective models. Tighter beams and more adjustability help designers deploy the sensors in a greater variety of applications.

Electrically, the control output is connectable as NPN/PNP open collector with output reverse-polarity protection. The devices consume very low current on the order of 20mA to 35mA, at supply voltages of 12VDC to 24VDC, with the ability to switch up to 100mA maximum. Designers can choose models with cables, or on-board M8 connectors for use with straight and right-angle cables.

The sensors are extremely compact at 10.8x19.5x31.5mm, and various mounting brackets are available. Sensors are built to operate in a wide range of temperatures from -30 to +55DegC, and an optional air blower allows stable detection, even in dusty or misty environments.

They provide a superior price/performance detection option for OEM machinery, material handling equipment, freight elevators, automated guided vehicles, robotics, pick-and-place systems, packaging machines, and many other types of applications.

Photoelectric sensor.

The new LS25CI throughbeam photoelectric sensor from Leuze is powerful and flexible and can transilluminate even metalised and dark films - meets the stringent requirements of the packaging industry.

The films used in the packaging industry vary greatly: they are more or less transparent and sometimes even dark or metallized. This makes it challenging for photoelectric sensors to reliably detect the position of the objects in the packaging. With the LS25CI, Leuze is introducing a throughbeam photoelectric sensor that is up to the job: The LS25CI is very powerful and can transilluminate any type of film. This enables the reliable separation of products and sealing of the film in the right places. The infrared light used is harmless and poses no danger to the eyes.

System operators can pick from two models: The LS25CI.XR1 high power can transilluminate dark films as well as identify individual transparent films. The performance of the photoelectric sensor can be conveniently configured via a potentiometer. For even tougher requirements, customers may want to opt for the LS25CI.XX superpower: It transilluminates metallized and dark colored films, even if they are multi-layered. The receiver works with both transmitter models. The sensitivity of the receiver can also be quickly and intuitively adjusted via potentiometers.

The housings of the transmitter and receiver meet protection classes IP67 and IP69K. They are also ECOLAB certified for use in harsh environments that require frequent cleaning. The devices are wired with M8 or M12 connectors and can thus be easily integrated into systems.

Installing photoelectric sensors a breeze!

The new generation of photoelectric sensors in the BOS 6K series from Balluff is absolutely ideal for setting new benchmarks in the compact class. Its small 31.5 x 19.5 x 10.8 mm dimensions not only make it the perfect response to tight spaces in compact machines, but also a series that leaves nothing to be desired. Its 70 variants provide a functional product range from start to finish with red light and laser versions (class 1) for very demanding jobs. The range features impressive precision, range and function reserves. Diffuse sensors, through-beam sensors, reflection light sensors with and without background suppression and analog distance sensors, each with the flexibility to be configured for light/dark switching, are just a few examples from the BOS 6K family.

All of the sensors have an exceptionally tough and durable plastic housing with abrasion-resistant laser inscription. A special design element protects the optics from the side. Thanks to its particularly high IP 67 & IP 69K degrees of protection, a lens surface of PMMA and Ecolab approval, the BOS 6K is also a prime choice for use in the food industry.

All of the variants feature high-quality teach buttons with exceptional tactile feedback. If the installed sensor is difficult to access, they can also be taught whatever the interesting aspect is using a remote connection. Exceptionally convenient: The sensor functions can also be configured during ongoing operation. Two LEDs easily visible from any direction properly provide information at a glance. They indicate the operating state, the function reserves and the switching state. Extremely durable metal plugs ensure there are no outages under high mechanical loads.

Switching from an earlier model to the new BOS 6K generation is a breeze for the user. The size, installation, operating concept and even the price are absolutely identical. This means that the user gets even more performance for the same price.

The retroreflective light sensor with autocollimation is a particular highlight. Thanks to its extremely low hysteresis, it easily detects transparent objects made of glass, such as bottles, ampules or test tubes, or transparent plastic films. As analog distance sensors, BOS 6 sensors open up new possibilities, such as for positioning clamping jaws on a machine for producing ball bearings.

Installing the BOS 6K is a breeze: Two integrated dovetail guides on the housing as well as two normal drilled holes and two elongated mounting holes offer the highest level of freedom for mounting.

Photoelectric sensor with longer sensing distance & high-speed detection

New cost-reduced PA-18 series delivers longer sensing distance, high-speed detection and improved LED diagnostics, in space saving and easy-to-clean housings

Carlo Gavazzi has introduced its third generation of M18 compact photoelectric sensors, bringing superior performance and higher functionality alongside lower cost and reduced sizes. Available in diffuse reflective, retro-reflective, polarised and through-beam variants, with axial or radial housing options, the new PA18 range of M18 photo sensors offer twice the performance of previous generations at 25percent lower cost. The new sensors are ECOLAB certified as resistant to high temperatures, high-pressure cleaning, and strong cleaning agents and disinfectants, to ensure reliable detection in the harshest environments.

The PA18 series features an optimised aspherical lens design that provides a wide sensing angle and significantly longer sensing range. Thanks to a built-in microprocessor that guarantees advanced filtering and detection and also allows flexible customized solutions, sensing distances are more than doubled. Maximum range is extended to 1m for diffuse reflective types, 6.5m for retro-reflective and 20m for through-beam models. Polarised reflective version can detect up to 5m, representing a 150percent improvement over existing sensors.

From close distances to full range, the sensors' highly precise and linear sensitivity adjustment together with a manual potentiometer provides accurate and easy setting. A new green signal quality/power indicator supplements the familiar yellow target-detection LED, making it easier to set up and adjust the system.

Electrical performance is also enhanced throughout the family. Detection speed is 500 impulse/s - a 400percent improvement on previous sensors. Plus, supply voltage has been reduced to 10- 30 VDC, whilst load current is halved to 100mA. Available as PNP or NPN versions, the PA18 sensors offer the freedom to choose between a normally open and normally closed output in the same sensor, dramatically easing the demands on inventory, storage capacity and stock control.

The PA18 sensors offer high immunity to light and electromagnetic disturbances, with an early warning LED to indicate dust accumulation. Together these features reduce the need for system maintenance and promise higher uptime throughout a longer operational life.

In addition, the PA18 series comes with a new mounting accessory to facilitate quick and easy mounting. The smart and simple mounting accessory, along with robust design of the sensors, makes cleaning easier and more efficient. The detectors are built to withstand cleaning with water at 80°C, high-pressure washing up to 100bar and resist alkaline and acidic cleaning agents, exceeding the requirements of IP69K tests according to DIN 40050-9 as tested by their ECOLAB certification.

Furthermore, the PA18 series sensors carry CE and UL marks, and meet the Low-Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC as well as EMC Directive 2004/108/EC.

Mini photoelectric sensors!

The ML100 series from Pepperl & Fuchs, comprises a complete family of user friendly miniature photoelectric sensors which are ideally suited for applications where long ranges and a high level of reliability are required. Due to their miniature design, the ML100 series sensors are also suitable for use in extremely confined areas, where optimum performance has to be ensured in the tightest spaces.

These photoelectric sensors feature the highest optical performance and long-term stability, which makes them the best on the market. They also feature a powerful lens and PowerBeam LEDs. PowerBeam guarantees excellent visibility of the red light spot and enables trouble-free alignment with no central bond spot, even on the smallest reflectors. The high power density and quality of the light spot significantly improve the reliability of the sensors. Also, a longer service life and lack of degradation will make additional teach-in processes unnecessary.

The size of the light spot from sensors with PowerBeam is carefully adapted to the particular application and operating principle. The ML 100-8-H diffuse mode photoelectric sensors with background suppression for short ranges provide a very bright, small and sharp light spot for simple setup, best switching accuracy, and reliable detection of dark black objects. The ML100-55 photoelectric sensors provide a highly visible and larger light spot for easy alignment, greater detection range, and stability control. Secure mounting is ensured by the threaded metal bushing. This means that the threading is more durable and enables maximum tightening torque.

During operation, the ML 100 miniature sensors are characterized by extremely low power consumption, insensitivity to ambient lighting, and protection from cross-talk. Bright, clearly visible indicator LEDs provide detailed information on the operating and switching status. The status LEDs, which are highly visible from all sides, provide clear information regarding reliable operation. The green LED indicates Power On, while the yellow LED shows the sensor’s operating status.

The high degree of protection (IP67), resistance to reflection and vibrations, and a reliable operating temperature range of -30 to 60 °C open up a wide variety of applications in factory automation.
