Petrochem event in new venue!

PEFTEC 2019 is a specialist event focusing on the testing, analysis and monitoring of gas, downstream oil products, chemicals and petrochemicals. With a comprehensive programme of conferences, seminars and an international exhibition, it will provide the latest guidance on regulations, methods, standards and technologies for analytical chemists, process scientists, researchers, academics, process operators, regulators, consultants, laboratory personnel and environmental managers.

This year the event, the 3rd international conference and exhibition on testing and monitoring in oil, petrochemical, refining and environmental applications, will take place on 22nd and 23rd May at the Rotterdam Ahoy exhibition centre (NL).

It has been expanded to include a full Process Analysis Conference, as well as the hugely popular Analytical Conference, and a full programme of technical Seminars.

The PEFTEC Analytical Conference will address the latest analytical techniques with a plenary on the first day by one of the fathers of Petroleomics and Director of the Future Fuels Institute at Florida State University, Ryan P. Rodgers. The plenary on the second day by Eric Little, the Chief Data Officer of Osthus, will address the hot topic of ‘Big Data and Big Analysis’.

The Process Monitoring Conference will include a plenary lecture on the latest developments in process monitoring by Alison Nordon from the Centre for Process Analysis and Control Technology (CPACT). This will be followed by sessions featuring a wide variety of the latest monitoring techniques

The new larger PEFTEC Exhibition will provide access to innovation from over 250 world-leading companies, many of which will be providing technical seminars during the event.

The exhibition will offer a fantastic opportunity to not just see the latest technologies, but to discuss them with experts and meet with potential suppliers. This is vitally important because face to face meetings provide an opportunity to build trust, and people that visit exhibitions often remark that they found something they didn’t know they were looking for. The Industrial Methane Measurement (IMM) Conference will run alongside the PEFTEC event, with delegates from both events sharing the ability to peruse the PEFTEC exhibition.

Methane is an important Greenhouse Gas (GHG), absorbing significantly more energy than carbon dioxide for example, so it performs a major role in global warming. Furthermore, atmospheric methane concentrations rose during the decade from 2006 to 2016, so there is major concern about the sources of this increase and also with the monitoring methods. The methane measurement conference was therefore created to provide an opportunity for experts from around the world to share their experiences in the detection, monitoring and mitigation/prevention of methane emissions.

Process analysis added to event!

PEFTEC 2019 has been expanded to include a full Process Analysis Conference, as well as the hugely popular Analytical Conference. In addition, both conferences will merge for a joint session on ‘Big Data/Big Analysis’.

Taking place on 22nd & 23rd May in Rotterdam (NL) PEFTEC 2019 will be the 3rd international conference and exhibition on testing and monitoring in oil, petrochemical, refining and environmental applications. The Process Analysis Conference will include sessions on process gas analysis using online techniques such as GC, Optical Feedback Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy, VUV Spectroscopy and Open Path FTIR. Presentations will address the re-emergence of Supercritical Fluid Chromatography as well as the application of both molecular and atomic spectroscopic techniques. There will also be presentations on process liquid analysis applications using a range of spectrometric, chromatographic and sensor based technologies.

PEFTEC will also incorporate an Industrial Methane Measurement Conference featuring a wide variety of speakers reporting on projects and technologies involved with initiatives to measure and mitigate global methane emissions.

Methane emissions to be studied!

High profile speakers from 13 different countries will present at this year’s Industrial Methane Emissions Conference, which will take place alongside PEFTEC 2017 in Antwerp (B) on 29th and 30th November 2017. Running over 2 days, the Conference will address themes such as anthropogenic methane emission sources; the assessment of uncontrolled and controlled emissions; current measurement methods; relevant international regulations and drivers; industry needs; quality assurance and validation; the interpretation of measurements, and emerging technologies.

The keynote speaker on the first day will be Baroness Worthington from the Environmental Defense Fund, who will provide a global perspective on methane monitoring needs and drivers. On the second day Adam Brandt from Stanford University will deliver the keynote presentation, describing the current and future state of knowledge on emissions.

Abstracts for all 30 oral and 12 poster present presentations are now available from the event website, as is registration which costs €125/day. Registered delegates will be able to access any of the Conferences, the PEFTEC Exhibition and over 60 free seminars, without incurring any further cost.

Highlighting the importance of methane emissions monitoring, Scientific Committee Chair Rod Robinson from NPL, says: “International treaties to combat climate change rely on the quality of emissions data, and amendments to prior estimates can have enormous ramifications for industries such as oil, gas, waste management and agriculture. It is therefore essential that methane emissions are measured accurately and reliably.”

The organisers of PEFTEC 2017 (Antwerp, 29-30th November) (B) have published details of a comprehensive series of seminars that will follow the event’s themes of testing, analysis and monitoring in the petrochemical sectors.

Running throughout both days of the event, a program of over 60 seminars will operate from 8 different seminar rooms within the Exhibition hall. The seminars will operate on a walk-in, walk-out basis, offering visitors the opportunity to select the subject matter of greatest interest. The seminars will address an enormous variety of subjects, covering techniques, methods, standards and cases studies in laboratory analysis, process monitoring and environmental monitoring. PEFTEC Analytical Conference (29th & 30th November)
This 2 day conference is divided into 4 half-day themed sessions which are planned to allow delegates with particular technique interests to cover their topic of interest in the conference whilst also consulting the wide range of relevant instrument manufacturers and providers in the exhibition. The Analytical Techniques sessions will discuss the latest developments and trends in analysis in the petrochemical industries through presentations from leading academic and industry experts.

Day 1
The morning session on Day 1 will cover Elemental Analysis and Speciation including trace metal analysis and the speciation of mercury, phosphorus, arsenic and oxygen compounds in a range of petrochemical samples. The afternoon session of day 1 will be dedicated to the latest developments in Mass Spectrometry.

The increased availability of affordable, reliable and easy to operate high resolution mass spectrometers when combined with sample ionisation techniques which offer a degree of chemical selectivity has led to a recent dramatic rise in the use of these techniques. In this session, leading researchers in this field from academia and industry will cover all of the main techniques and their application.

Day 2
The morning session on Day 2 will address Separation Science techniques including GC, HPLC and SFC with a focus on multidimensional and hyphenated systems. GC continues to be the most commonly used chromatographic technique in the industry and the application of multidimensional GC techniques will be covered in the first 2 presentations, followed by a talk on the application of in silico modelling of GC separations. The remainder of the session will cover the application of SFC and HPLC and their combinations to achieve improved separations.

The final afternoon session will cover spectroscopic techniques and on-line analysis, focusing on the rapid rise of Vacuum Ultra-Violet Spectroscopy (VUV) in the industry. VUV is a selective and sensitive detector for hydrocarbon analysis which in a relatively brief time has been widely accepted by the industry and in combination with GC has recently been approved as an ASTM method for the analysis of finished gasoline (ASTM D8071). The application of thermo-gravimetric analysis coupled with infra-red spectroscopy (TGA-IR) for fouling deposit analysis and the application of comprehensive two dimensional GC for on-line analysis will complete the session and the analytical technique conference.

PEFTEC Environmental Monitoring Conference (Wednesday 29th November)
Prof Alastair Lewis from the University of York (GB) will introduce this one day conference focusing on the management of gaseous and particulate emissions to the atmosphere - a vital component of environmental sustainability in the petrochemical and refining industries. The presentations will examine the latest theoretical, observational and modeling approaches that are available for quantifying both greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2 and short-lived air pollutants including NOx, mercury and hydrocarbons. The presentations will cover the latest techniques that can be used to better quantify emissions from existing industrial activities and that provide insight into the future impacts of new industry practices and regulations.

A programme of international speakers from Britain, Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Austria has been assembled from academic and industry sectors. The speakers will cover issues ranging from measurement science, emissions quantification, regulation and future environmental priorities for the industry.

Petrochemical industry embraces new testing event!

The inaugural PEFTEC event took place in Antwerp (B) in mid-November 2015, and reported feedback from conference speakers, exhibitors and delegates has been extremely positive.

PEFTEC 2015 was created to provide the petrochemical industry with an opportunity to discover the latest information on testing and monitoring, in the laboratory, in the field and on-site. A packed conference programme ran over both days and over 80 seminars took place in 8 seminar rooms that were located within the exhibition hall.

In response to demand, the organisers had to increase the floor space of the Exhibition. However, the majority of the booths were small and informative rather than promotional. Nevertheless, there were over 120 international laboratory and process monitoring equipment suppliers and analytical service providers on show, representing more than 220 organisations worldwide. As part of the PEFTEC Technical Programme, there were also 40 poster presentations – all of which were located within the exhibition hall. PEFTEC therefore represented a truly unique opportunity to see the entire market sector under one roof at the same time. Dr Oliver Sauer from Grabner Instruments agreed: “The show was a great place for networking with other suppliers in the market, with partners and customers – a sort of family reunion.”

Summarising her thoughts on the event, Elizabeth Wilkinson from Lovibond Tintometer said: “The inaugural PEFTEC event proved to be extremely successful – bringing in a great many industry experts throughout the supply chain. The organisers must be complimented on such a successful event for its first year and we certainly look forward to joining them again in 2017.”

Prof. Ralf Zimmermann, one of the Conference speakers added: “I found the meeting interesting; the scientific programme was very well organised and the show was focused, which made it very efficient, so it's a very worthwhile event to visit. Also the location was well chosen and I recommend that the event should continue in the same format.”

As PEFTEC organiser, Marcus Pattison was obviously delighted with the success of the event and with the highly positive feedback that it generated. “These are challenging times for the oil and gas sector, so it was very encouraging that PEFTEC 2015 was such a success, and we are greatly looking forward to PEFTEC 2017 which will take place 29th to 30th November, again in Antwerp."

The organisers of PEFTEC 2015, the petrochemical industry’s testing and monitoring event, have unveiled details of the event’s Conference and Seminar Programme, featuring speakers from the oil and chemicals industries, technology manufacturers, standards organisations, research and academia. Speaker and abstract details are available for all of the Conference and Seminar presentations.

Taking place at the Antwerp Expo from 18th-19th November, PEFTEC 2015 was created to provide the petrochemical industry with an opportunity to discover the latest information on testing and monitoring, in the laboratory, in the field and on-site. Visitors will be able to choose from a wide variety of presentations covering key topics such as Analytical Standards, Quality Assurance, Regulation, Analytical Techniques, Process and Environmental Monitoring.

On Wednesday 18th November, the Conference will focus on Environmental Monitoring, Process Monitoring and Regulation in and around petroleum and petrochemical plants. Then on the following day, the conference will have an analytical theme, addressing issues such as the latest developments in Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography, and in hybrid or hyphenated techniques, and novel detection technologies.
