Moisture in waste-heat-to-power conversion.

Sensors provide the humidity and dew point measurements needed to protect critical components, simplify control and build customer trust.

A novel technology that converts waste heat into electrical power at higher efficiency and at lower temperatures than many competing waste-heat recovery approaches has been developed by JTEC Energy. Its system uses hydrogen as the working fluid, pairing a heat-driven compression technology with electrochemical stacks that convert hydrogen pressure into electrical potential. Vaisala sensors provide the humidity and dew point measurements needed to protect critical components, simplify control and build customer trust.

Tight moisture control is essential to this process. The electrochemical stack needs humidified hydrogen to keep its membranes functioning optimally, while the metal hydride reactors used in the waste-heat conversion subsystem must be protected from excessive moisture exposure. To manage that balance, JTEC developed a closed-loop gas management system that removes and recirculates more than 99.99 percent of the moisture introduced into the system.

For this system to operate reliably, JTEC requires highly accurate moisture measurement across conditions ranging from high humidity at the electrochemical stack to the very low dew point levels required before hydrogen can be safely returned to the reactors. These critical measurements also need to be performed with industrial-ready sensors that can operate in hydrogen, support dynamic pressure and flow conditions, integrate with control systems and meet hazardous area requirements.

Protecting a critical system in a demanding Hydrogen environment.
JTEC’s waste-heat-to-power conversion system brings together two subsystems with different moisture requirements: an electrochemical stack that requires moisture to operate efficiently and metal hydride reactors that must be protected from excess moisture.

In this system, waste heat is delivered to one of the metal hydride reactors in the waste-heat conversion subsystem. Metal hydrides act much like a sponge for hydrogen. When cooled, they absorb hydrogen. When heated, they release hydrogen at a pressure linked to temperature. JTEC’s system uses that ability to generate hydrogen pressure as part of the process for converting waste heat into electrical power.

From the metal hydride reactors, the high-pressure hydrogen is then sent to the stack module, where expansion across JTEC’s novel electrochemical stacks produces electrical power. After this expansion, the low-pressure hydrogen leaves the stack and can be absorbed back into a separate metal hydride reactor in the waste-heat conversion module, where it can later be heated, pressurized and used to generate power again. Through this process, JTEC has developed a waste-heat-to-power conversion technology that circulates a single charge of hydrogen in a fully closed loop: No hydrogen is consumed by the system, and waste heat is the only “fuel” JTEC needs to operate.

During passage through the stacks, the hydrogen gas is humidified to keep the membranes in the stacks operating at peak performance. However, excess water exposure can damage metal hydrides by contributing to the development of oxide layers that limit hydrogen absorption and reduce reactor performance. As a result, JTEC must maintain enough moisture to support stack performance, then dry the hydrogen stream before it reaches the reactors.

“At its core, humidity measurement is so important to JTEC because we have two parts of our system that work really well, but for them to work well together, we have to ensure that we can control humidity passing back and forth between them really tightly,” said Julian Bell, Vice President of Engineering at JTEC Energy.

Before standardising on Vaisala, JTEC used conventional relative humidity and dew point sensors in lab and R&D work. These sensors were not always robust enough for the application, especially when exposed to condensation or saturation events.

In R&D applications, a saturated humidity probe could force engineers to stop an experiment, dry down equipment, clean the system and begin again. In one case, an engineer spent three days trying to complete a six-hour experiment because the sensor saturated partway through the test and the system had to be reset.

The risks posed by inaccurate or unreliable moisture measurements are even greater in a production system, where the waste-heat conversion subsystem can represent more than a third of total system cost and is continuously in operation while the system is running. Moisture overexposures can degrade reactor system performance and require offline maintenance for recovery, adding unacceptable downtime to power production infrastructure.

“The honest truth is that we had not found a good sensor option before we came to Vaisala,” Bell said.

Standardising on Vaisala for humidity and dew point measurement.
JTEC first piloted a Vaisala dew point sensor in an internal R&D project in 2023. As the company worked toward its first production system and field pilot, Vaisala became the preferred option based on low dew point performance, calibration stability, availability, integration flexibility and technical support.

In JTEC's production system architecture, Vaisala sensors support three critical moisture measurement points.

• The first is a high-humidity measurement after the initial stage of the dehumidification system. At that point, hydrogen has left the electrochemical stack and much of its moisture has already been removed. JTEC uses a Vaisala HMP7 relative humidity and temperature probe to confirm system performance and help avoid condensation in the line.

• The second is a low dew point measurement after the later stages of moisture management. At this stage, hydrogen must be dried back to specification before returning to the metal hydride reactors. JTEC is using a Vaisala DMP370 Ex-rated sensor in this location. Beyond the stability and accuracy of the DMP370, working with Vaisala to explore a transition to sensors rated for hazardous environment operation has helped JTEC prepare for future customer requirements in demanding end-use environments.

•The third measurement point is in JTEC's maintenance manifold, which adjusts gas pressures in different parts of the system during startup, shutdown and maintenance operations. A Vaisala DMT143 dew point transmitter is used to confirm that moisture is not moved from the wet side of the system into dry sections that supply hydrogen to critical components.

Implementation was straightforward. The sensors were installed as part of the larger system assembly and integrated with JTEC's control system. For a dynamic batch process where pressure, temperature and flow can vary significantly through a cycle, measurement performance, data accessibility and technical support were especially important.

“Vaisala’s auto-calibration is a key feature that improves confidence in the number coming back to us, which has been a huge benefit,” Bell said. “At the same time, we have been able to integrate pressure compensation routines into our dew point measurements with support from Vaisala engineers, and that expertise really shines through.”

Vaisala support extends beyond product selection. The company provides access to Vaisala’s doctoral-level scientists who are global experts in humidity metrology. Their continued guidance helps the team evaluate moisture measurement in hydrogen at varying pressures and low dew point levels.

This was especially important because moisture measurement in hydrogen at pressures substantially different from atmospheric conditions is not fully understood across the scientific community or industry. Vaisala's technical expertise helped JTEC make informed decisions about how to approach pressure compensation and measurement confidence in those conditions.

“Vaisala helped educate us about what is known, what we can confidently say and where confidence drops off," Bell said. “It is because Vaisala has experts like that and is willing to make them accessible to customers that we were able to make intelligent decisions about how to perform these measurements."

Measurement confidence for field deployment As JTEC prepares its first production system for deployment in a field pilot, Vaisala measurement technology gives the company confidence that it can monitor moisture closely enough to protect critical reactor components. For example, JTEC must tightly control moisture content in the hydrogen gas as it returns to the reactors, making measurement accuracy, repeatability and robustness central to field readiness.

“I would have to have the highest level of certainty in my moisture measurements in order to feel comfortable running a reactor system of this scale in a field pilot, and Vaisala provides this certainty,” Bell said. “The investment in the reactor system is too great to justify running it if you are not 100 percent confident that you know what kind of moisture content you are putting back into the reactors.”

The Vaisala sensors help JTEC:

  • Protect metal hydride reactors from damaging moisture exposure.
  • Confidently measure very low dew points accurately.
  • Simplify control through stable, reliable measurement.
  • Support future hazardous-area installations through Ex-rated measurement.
  • Use consistent sensor technology across R&D and production environments.

Vaisala DMT143 transmitters are now standard dew point sensors in JTEC's R&D operations, and the DMT143, HMP7 and DMP370 are standard components in the company's production system architecture.

For low-dew-point measurements, the Vaisala DMP370 offers a control advantage by delivering stable readings without the calibration interruptions that must be managed in some other measurement architectures.

“When we are deciding when to switch from one dehumidification column to another, knowing there is never a time period where we do not have direct eyes on the moisture content of the exiting gas makes it even easier for us,” Bell said.

Vaisala's technical partnership has also influenced how JTEC evaluates sensor vendors. Bell said moisture measurement is one of only a few areas where JTEC specifically names the sensor provider when discussing the system with customers, distributors and technical partners.

“Vaisala provides one of the three most important sensors in our entire system, with the moisture sensor being the most important sensor for the longevity of our system,” Bell said. “This is the one place where we could not be happier and are not looking for new sensors.”

Enabling the next stage of Waste-Heat-to-Power Conversion.
As JTEC moves from the lab to the field, moisture measurement will be central to demonstrating the performance of its closed-loop gas management approach. Vaisala sensors provide the real-time visibility needed to validate performance by quantifying both the high humidity levels entering the moisture management process and the low dew point levels at the outlet.

That visibility helps JTEC protect reactor health, simplify control and build confidence that the system can support field operation. Looking ahead, JTEC expects to continue using Vaisala sensors as its production systems scale and as additional monitoring requirements emerge.

By standardising on Vaisala, JTEC has established a moisture measurement foundation that supports field deployment, system reliability and future growth. In an application where moisture can determine reactor health, control reliability and customer confidence, accurate measurement is a core enabler of bringing a new waste-heat-to-power conversion technology into the field.

Reducing the impact of chemical contamination of sensors.

Dust, humidity, corrosive media and chemical contamination can impair the measurement performance of industrial sensors. Depending on the application, these stresses affect different sensor areas and can cause measurement drift or increase maintenance requirements. E+E Elektronik addresses these challenges with application-specific protection concepts for sensor elements, connections and other sensitive areas. With ChemShield, E+E Elektronik is now adding a protective barrier specifically developed for chemically demanding applications.

E+E Shield Technologies
The protection concepts from E+E Elektronik act where environmental conditions can affect sensor performance. Each technology fulfils a different function.

SensShield is a protective coating for the sensor element as well as its connections and solder joints. It reduces the impact of dust, dirt, oily contamination, salts, humidity and corrosive exposure. At the same time, the coating helps prevent stray impedances caused by deposits on the sensor surface or connection leads.

LeadsShield protects particularly sensitive sensor connections and solder joints through targeted encapsulation. Only the sensor element itself comes into contact with the medium being measured. This protects critical connection areas from corrosion and contamination without unnecessarily affecting the sensor's response characteristics.

ChemShield adds a barrier against chemical contamination to these protection concepts. The coating is applied to defined areas such as the sensor element and solder joints. It reduces the impact of harmful chemical substances and supports long-term stable measurement performance in chemically demanding environments.

Contaminated Sensor
For chemically demanding processes.
Chemical exposure places particularly high demands on the sensor element in humidity measurement. Process media can change, oils age or oxidise, and residues from production and cleaning processes can affect sensitive sensor areas. This can lead to measurement drift and reduced long-term stability.

ChemShield forms an additional barrier against these influences. This extends the application range of selected E+E Elektronik humidity and moisture in oil sensors to environments with increased chemical exposure.

Long-term stable moisture measurement in oil.
One key area of application is moisture measurement in oil. Ageing, oxidation and contamination can change the chemical properties of an oil and place additional stress on the sensor element. ChemShield reduces the impact of these changes and supports long-term stable moisture measurement.

The technology is used, among other products, in the EE360 and EE364 moisture in oil sensors. Depending on the application and product configuration, this also makes them suitable for demanding lubricating, hydraulic and insulating oils as well as selected natural ester oils. ChemShield also provides additional protection against chemical exposure in contaminated turbine, compressor and hydraulic oils.

Enhanced protection for industrial humidity applications.
In industrial humidity measurement, chemical contaminants can also affect sensor performance. Typical applications include test and climate chambers, fume cupboards, pharmaceutical environments with intensive cleaning, biofilters, fertiliser environments, and specialised drying and fermentation processes.

For selected applications, E+E Elektronik combines ChemShield with SensShield. In the EE310 humidity and temperature sensor, this combination supports long-term stable measurement performance even under increased chemical exposure. The specific configuration is matched to the respective process conditions.

Protection matched to the measurement task.
E+E Elektronik does not take a one-size-fits-all approach to sensor protection. What matters is which components are exposed to which stresses in the respective application. SensShield, LeadsShield and ChemShield can therefore be used selectively and combined as required.

This allows the level of protection, measurement performance, response characteristics and serviceability to be matched to the specific application. The goal is reliable, long-term stable measurements even under demanding industrial conditions.

Determining moisture in Oil.

The E+E humidity sensing elements used in the MOP301 are characterised by their long-term stability and resistance to contamination. They form the basis for high-precision and reliable humidity and temperature measurement.

The immersion probe is impressive mechanically with a rugged stainless steel enclosure with protection class IP66, an oil-resistant cable and a moulded M12 connector. It can be used in a temperature range of -40 to 120 °C (-40...248 °F) and at up to 20 bar pressure.

Various probe and cable lengths and the lean design enable particularly flexible installation of the MOP301. Thanks to the practical slide fitting, the immersion depth can be precisely set, and changed if needed. Using an optional ball valve, the probe can be installed and removed without interrupting the process and under pressure.

The MOP301 delivers the oil moisture content as an absolute or relative value. The water activity (aw) states the relative moisture content of an oil and describes the relationship between the actual and maximum possible amount of dissolved water. The aw value reveals how close the oil is to the saturation point at a specific temperature.

The water content (x) expresses the moisture content in absolute figures. It is stated in ppm or mg water / kg oil. The MOP301 calculates the water content based on the measured water activity and temperature. The oil-specific parameters required for calculation can be factory pre-configured, written via Modbus RTU, or set retroactively with the aid of the PCS10 Product Configuration Software. The measured values are provided via the RS485 interface using the Modbus RTU protocol.

The MOP301 is compatible with the Sigma 05 sensor hub by E+E Elektronik. The probe can be plugged into the host device based on the plug-and-play principle and thus extended to a sensor unit with analogue outputs and an optional display.

• E+E products are marketed in Ireland through Instrument Technology.

Moisture meter and thermal imager.

Designed to visually scan large areas for moisture issues, air leaks, electrical problems, and more, the FLIR MR265 Moisture Meter and Thermal Imager with MSX empowers professionals to quickly identify and locate water leaks and other moisture issues at the source. This dual thermal imager and measurement tool combines a 160 × 120 resolution Lepton® thermal camera, visual camera, laser pointer, and both pin and pinless moisture detection for faster leak identification and measurement, plus offers easy reporting through the FLIR Thermal Studio Suite™.

“Using the MR265 is great because it can read moisture levels in a couple different ways and using the onboard thermal camera with the laser, I can find temperature anomalies in circuit breaker boxes faster than ever. It’s not too big, so it is easy to carry in my satchel. It’s a tool that has more than one function, so I don’t have to carry as many different tools with me. This is a great addition to my inspection tools. I like this tool very much.”
-Terry Meyer, Home Inspector, Metro Home Inspections

Home inspectors, contractors, and other professionals who want to consolidate tools without jeopardizing function will appreciate the multiple ways to read and report moisture levels with the MR265, as well as identify temperature anomalies that could denote issues from leaking pipes, to overheating circuits, to inefficient windows and doors.

The Power of MSX: Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging Enhancement
When compared to traditional non-thermal imaging moisture meters, inspection time is significantly decreased with the MR265. Its ability to emboss edge detail from a two-megapixel visible camera onto the thermal image, via MSX, provides the user significantly more detail and context on screen and in saved images to identify issues quickly and efficiently.

Pin and Pinless Moisture Measurement
The MR265 also offers flexibility in identifying moisture issues—providing both pin and pinless capabilities. The pinless option can provide qualitative measurements through an integrated sensor for situations where a more invasive method either isn’t possible or would cause unwanted damage. Conversely, pin measurements produce quantifiable measurements using a resistive sensor that can pierce cavities and other suspected moisture spots within walls, ceilings, and floors. When used with the thermal imager, operators can scan an entire interior wall to narrow down the moisture location, use the integrated sensor to pinpoint the source of water intrusion, and then measure the exact amount of moisture without requiring unnecessary demolition. Functionality can be further expanded through six compatible accessory probes and sensors available for the MR265, such as the FLIR MR08 hammer and wall cavity probe combo and the FLIR MR05 impact pin moisture probe.

Gain Insight and Peace of Mind with FLIR Thermal Studio Suite
Streamlined reporting capabilities available through FLIR Thermal Studio Suite can also decrease diagnostic and reporting time. Users can directly upload thermal JPEGs with the included USB cable to either FLIR Thermal Studio or to a compatible reporting solution. They can also produce thermal, MSX, visual image reports, or before-and-after reports containing all three types of images through the FLIR software. This can help users more easily communicate pre- and post-repair activity, ultimately providing peace of mind that issues relating to rot, mold, electrical, or energy inefficiencies have been identified and remedied.

Natural gas analyser.

Proven measurement technology for monitoring moisture content in natural gas pipelines benefits from improved user interface, data handling and network connectivity, along with enhanced modularity for optimal field serviceability.

The J22 TDLAS Gas Analyzer has been launched by SpectraSensors, An Endress+Hauser company. . This new product addresses multiple issues with traditional technologies used for the measurement of moisture content in natural gas, while providing additional benefits.

Today’s natural gas market is more complex than ever, with an unprecedented range of supply sources and overall gas composition variability. Gas suppliers, pipeline operators, and industrial users must accommodate unexpected changes in heating value and contaminant levels by using analyzers to verify characteristics throughout the supply chain. One very critical contaminant must be monitored continuously: H2O. The presence of water content in liquid or gas can cause corrosion in a pipeline or other assets. Moisture and other acids can combine to cause severe asset degradation.

The J22 moisture analyzer combines Endress+Hauser’s and SpectraSensors’ more than two decades of experience producing tunable diode laser analyzers with the latest advancements in data analysis, internal diagnostics, multi-functional enclosures, and web server connectivity. The combination of these features creates a comprehensive moisture monitoring solution with unique capabilities.

The analyzer can replace traditional electrochemical sensors, such as aluminum oxide, phosphorus pentoxide, quartz crystal microbalance, and chilled mirror. These technologies often lose accuracy due to contamination issues, require frequent maintenance, and can’t reliably distinguish between water and other liquids frequently found in gas streams, such as glycol and methanol.

TDLAS technology can identify the water molecules specifically, while being unaffected by a wide variety of other common contaminants. However, some traditional TDLAS analyzers are difficult to maintain and not suited to installation in the harsh environments that are often encountered with these types of measurement applications.

To address these and other issues, the J22 TDLAS Gas Analyzer is designed for almost zero maintenance. When service is required, its components are easily accessible and field-serviceable, allowing for quick replacements and upgrades. The gas sample cell is simple to remove and designed for convenient cleaning and servicing. The available IP66 and Type 4X enclosures for housing the analyzer system are suitable for installation in typical natural gas application locations.

Field operability is made all the easier thanks to Endress+Hauser’s Heartbeat Technology™, with diagnostic capabilities built into the J22 TDLAS Gas Analyzer. Alerts and verification reports advise operators on how the unit is performing and will inform the operator if the health of the analyzer is degrading. When severe enough, the system triggers alarms to call for maintenance attention. Operators can quickly interpret alerts, thanks to NAMUR 107 compliant alarm categories and diagnostic graphics.

The analyzer has a built-in web server, with connectivity provided to a laptop or other device via an Ethernet cable. This functionality allows operators to find further detail through information screens and verification reports, the latter provided in PDF format.

Moisture in ethylene!

Michell Instruments’ QMA601 process moisture analyzer has been selected by a major European manufacturer to monitor trace moisture in ethylene at point of entry from the supply pipeline.

After a year-long trial at the plant, Michell’s QMA601 quartz crystal microbalance moisture analyzer was shown to be measuring within specification throughout with no adjustments needed. The QMA601 with its QCM moisture sensor is a good choice for this application because it offers several advantages:

  • Ethylene will not polymerize on the quartz crystal sensor.
  • The sensor does not suffer from the interferences as its response is specific to the water molecules in the ethylene.
  • Unlike all other moisture analysis techniques, quartz crystal microbalance technology operates on a non-equilibrium basis which provides some of the fastest response speeds possible.

There is approximately 495 km of ethylene pipeline in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. This pipeline connects ethylene producers and consumers, providing an infrastructure for the petrochemical industry in these countries. Because of its highly flammable nature, Ethylene needs a special permit if it is to be transported in any other way.

Ethylene is an important chemical used for many petrochemical processes, such as the manufacture of polythene – so important that it is supplied by the producers to some European users via a pipeline. As with many other chemical processes, moisture must be kept to a minimum – in this case less than 10 ppmV. Quartz crystal technology has been proven to be fast, accurate and reliable in applications far dryer than the 0 to 10 ppmV range required for ethylene purity monitoring.

The QMA601 has global hazardous area certifications and is available with a full range of sample conditioning options.

Moisture in compressed air dryers.

Michell have issued a new paper on Critical moisture measurements for compressed air dryers.

Compressed air supplies are a necessity for industrial applications around the globe. In Europe alone, it is estimated 10 percent of all industrial electricity consumed is used to produce compressed air. Compressed air can also be used as a safe alternative power source in hazardous locations where there is a risk of fire or explosion, such as mines and oil rigs.

When warm compressed air leaves the compressor, it contains a high level of water vapour, and drying is a necessary part of the process. Any water vapour in the system will condense on cold surfaces and create the risk of corrosion or blockages.

Drying is a crucial part of the compressed air system and there are three options to choose from:
• After coolers (usually combined with another form of dryer)
• Refrigerant dryers
• Desiccant dryers

Dew-point measurements increase the efficiency and economy of drying – read the full article here to find out how dew-point dependent switching (DDS) saves money and ensures the quality of compressed air supplies.

Moisture in gas application in US.

Michell Instruments has won a bid to supply three OptiPEAK TDL600 moisture analysers to a gas processing plant in the United States.

Working closely with the plant operator, Michell’s system engineering department designed a customised sampling system to meet the specific requirements of the application. These include extra filtration to avoid dust carryover from the molecular sieve beds as well as additional safety features to protect the analyzers in the event of high process temperatures.

Taking advantage of the latest developments in laser spectroscopy, the OptiPEAK TDL600 has an unrivalled accuracy for any process moisture analyzer of ±1% of the reading or 1ppmV verified by calibration traceable to NPL (GB) and NIST (USA). Its lower detection limit of 1ppmV makes it the most sensitive instrument in its class on the market, as well as being one of the most reliable. Michell has developed a unique laser lock system to ensure the laser remains locked to the correct water absorption signal, maintaining a high integrity measurement at all times. In some earlier TDLAS moisture analyzer designs, drift in laser wavelength over time may cause gradual deterioration in measurement performance.

The high-end EE310 and EE360 industrial transmitters from E+E Elektronik are now available with stainless steel or with polycarbonate enclosure. The EE310 humidity and temperature transmitter is dedicated for demanding industrial processes control. The EE360 measures the moisture content of industrial oils and thus enables predictive maintenance of machines and plants.

Both devices feature an optional 3.5" TFT color display, which offers an optimal view of the measured values and facilitates the commissioning and configuration. The built-in data logger can save 20,000 values per measurand. The recorded data can be displayed as a graph directly on the display or downloaded via USB interface for further analysis.

The measured data is available on two analogue outputs and on the optional digital interface (RS485 with Modbus RTU or Ethernet with Modbus TCP). An optional relay module can be used for alarms and process control.

The enclosure design facilitates installation and maintenance. The front cover, which accommodates the electronics and the probe, can be replaced within seconds, while the wiring inside the back cover remains intact.

The EE310 measures relative humidity and temperature in the range -40 °C…180 °C ( 40...356 °F) and calculates further physical quantities such as dew point temperature, absolute humidity or mixing ratio. The transmitter is available for duct or wall mount, as well as with remote probes.

The EE360 measures water activity and temperature and calculates the absolute water content of transformer, lubrication and hydraulic oil, as well as of diesel fuel. The sensing probe can be employed up to 180 °C (356 °F) and 20 bar (290 psi). The ISO or NPT slide fitting and the optional ball valve facilitate the installation.

Corrosion-resistant moisture analyser.

Michell Instruments has announced a new variant of its OptiPEAKTDL600 moisture analyser, developed specifically for use in catalytic reforming processes in refineries. The OptiPEAK TDL600 is based on tuneable diode laser spectroscopy technology – a non-contact form of sensor as it uses absorption of frequencies of light to measure moisture content in gases.

The use of non-contact TDLAS measurement technology means that the system does not suffer from potential hydrochloric acid corrosion issues which may affect other direct contact sensors. In addition, the fast response to changes in moisture value make the OptiPEAK TDL600 ideal for use in catalytic reforming processes where controlling 10 to 20ppmV moisture content is critical to maintaining optimum catalyst condition and efficient creation of high-octane reformates.

Catalytic reforming is found in every refinery, since the straight run naphtha hydrocarbons distilled from the crude unit must have its octane raised to levels necessary to meet gasoline fuel specifications. Semi-regenerative and cyclic designs were originally used, but virtually all the new reformers in at least the past 20 years have been continuous (regeneration) catalytic reformers (CCRs).

The OptiPEAK TDL600 is the latest addition to Michell’s offering for monitoring moisture in catalytic reforming processes. The QMA601 moisture analyser, which uses quartz crystal microbalance technology, has also proven itself in H2 recycle gas with innovative adaption which reduces the impact of HC corrosion.

Moisture management manufacturer acquired.

The IMKO Micromodultechnik GmbH, a manufacturer of innovative moisture measurement systems has been acquired by the Endress+Hauser Group. IMKO’s headquarters are  remain in Ettlingen (D), and the company’s 19 employees have been retained.

SONO Moisture probes
“The area of moisture measurement developed by IMKO further enhances our existing offering for process instrumentation with an additional key quality parameter,” says Dr Andreas Mayr, Managing Director of Endress+Hauser GmbH+Co KG, whose portfolio will be complemented by the new company. “Additionally, the technology that IMKO employs is very similar to technologies we use for level measurement.”

Innovative technology
The IMKO systems measure moisture with time domain reflectrometry (TDR), a technology based on the time of flight of reflected radar waves. This provides information regarding the dielectric constant of a material which in turn relates directly to the material’s moisture. “This innovative technology offers major advantages over other technologies,” emphasizes Andreas Mayr. “The measurement is not influenced by the material’s conductivity. IMKO’s systems are precise, reliable and cost-efficient.”

Today, IMKO’s systems are used to measure moisture in buildings and soil, for environmental monitoring and also in process engineering applications for the food & beverage, chemical and life sciences industries. “With this acquisition, we are pursuing our strategy to support customers in future from the laboratory to the process,” says Andreas Mayr, who is also responsible for Technology and Marketing within the Executive Board of the Endress+Hauser Group.

Long-term perspective
IMKO was founded in 1984 by Kurt Köhler. The 67-year-old innovator was looking to place his company in capable hands to ensure its continued success. “Endress+Hauser is in a position to address new customer segments for our products and open up international markets. As a family-owned company, Endress+Hauser furthermore represents the same values that mark the corporate culture at IMKO.”
