Coriolis mass flow meters offer greater flexibility.

Emerson has introduced the Micro Motion™ G-Series line of Coriolis mass flow and density meters, the most compact dual-tube Coriolis mass flow meters on the market. The Micro Motion G-Series Coriolis Flow and Density Meter offers the same level of quality and reliability as standard designs, but in a much smaller and lighter form factor. Compared to traditional volumetric flow meters, it provides direct mass flow measurement, immunity of process temperature/pressure changes and advanced process and health diagnostics.

Emerson has also introduced the Micro Motion 4700 Coriolis Transmitter, adding new capabilities for use with its Micro Motion family of Coriolis flow meters. The transmitter can be retrofitted to most existing Micro Motion sensors, and ordered with all new meters, including the new Micro Motion G-Series. The combination of these two new products provides an ideal solution for chemical and other industrial applications.

Micro Motion G-Series Flow and Density Meter

Micro Motion G-Series Flow Meters are ideal for chemical plants that need to improve safety, reduce energy use, and minimise emissions. They are available with Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), Safety Integrity Level SIL 2 and SIL3 certification, and are designed to meet NAMUR NE 132 guidelines. Hygienic models will also be available in the first half of 2024 for food and beverage, life sciences, and other applications where 3-A or European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) certification is required.

Although Coriolis meters do not require upstream or downstream straight pipe runs like many other flow measurement technologies, some models have a larger footprint, limiting their use in confined spaces. Emerson’s new meters address this issue with a face-to-face dimension of less than 12 inches for the 1-inch line size model. The compact form factor is complemented by a significant reduction in weight, providing benefits for transportation, installation and safety.

The flexibility in communication and power options reduces installation cost and complexity. Connection to host systems is available via a combination of discrete and 4-20mA HART® signals, or via digital connections, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® technology, and power over Ethernet (PoE) solutions, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, or PROFINET. Each of these digital connections enables two-way communication of a variety of data, including process variables, diagnostics, status, configuration and calibration. This data can be used to implement proactive maintenance practices and digital transformation initiatives.

Six lines sizes are available, from ¼-inch to 3-inch, and product selection is provided via simplified and streamlined configuration. Direct laser-etch tagging provides durability in even the harshest conditions, and it eliminates the need for adhesive labels and spot-welded tags. MyEmerson digital specification tools are easily accessible through a QR code, providing a quick and easy solution for storing and accessing information related to each flow meter.

Micro Motion 4700 Config I/O Coriolis Transmitter

End users have deployed Micro Motion Coriolis flow meters extensively in a variety of industries, including chemical, food and beverage, life sciences, oil and gas, petrochemical, and others. Many of these end users are interested in switching to an upgraded transmitter with additional features and benefits, while avoiding the expense of changing existing flow meter installations, which typically have provided decades of trouble-free service.

The Micro Motion 4700 Coriolis Transmitter addresses this issue by providing a retrofit adapter solution to replace the legacy transmitter in existing installations. Once installed, the transmitter will automatically interface with the existing flow meter, adding capabilities just as if it were a new application. The transmitter is compatible with all Micro Motion ELITE® (CMF and CMFS), F-Series, H-Series, R-Series, T-Series, HPC-Series, and the new G-Series Coriolis flow meters.

The transmitter adds many new capabilities, including a Bluetooth connectivity option, which provides wireless communications at distances up to 50 feet (15 metres) between the transmitter and Emerson’s AMS Device Configurator. Wireless access via Bluetooth technology allows users to configure the meter, access Smart Meter Verification diagnostics, and access process information.

Using the AMS Device Configurator application, users can quickly locate and identify transmitters, and then perform tasks related to configuration, device status and diagnostics. Reliability is improved because transmitters no longer need to be opened for access, protecting them from exposure to the environment.

The transmitter has three configurable wired I/O channels to provide connectivity options, including 4-20mA HART, frequency output, discrete output and input, and Modbus RS-485. The Micro Motion 4700 provides an ideal solution for upgrades to existing Micro Motion Coriolis installations, and it is available as an option to provide advanced capabilities for new installations.

World flowmeter market.

Get Ready for a rebound in 2022 with brand new flowmeter data in Volume X!

While 2021 was an unusual year, it was definitely an improvement over 2020. And even though many companies suffered a decline in 2020, pent-up demand and an improving economy are causing a rebound in the flowmeter markets. Are you prepared for this new reality with the data you need to successfully compete in these expanding markets?

"At Flow Research, we spent most of last year developing the numbers for our new study that covers the entire flowmeter market, including all flowmeter types. The study is called Volume X: The World Market for Flowmeters, 8thEdition. This is easily our most popular study. It is accompanied by a new edition of Module A: Strategies, Industries, and Applications," said Dr Jesse Yoder of Flow Research.

Between the two, there is a complete analysis of the world flowmeter market that allows comparing effects of the pandemic on each flowmeter type. In addition it details market size, market shares, industries, applications, company profiles, and growth factors for all types of flowmeters used in the process industries. "Volume X is the result of more than a full year of research on each one of the individual flow technologies. This is our 8th Edition, and it is the best edition yet!"

This study has two base years: 2019 and 2020, so that the effects of the pandemic on the flowmeter market as a whole and by flowmeter type is evident. The 2021 numbers reflect up to date projections, and the forecasts go through 2024.

As of today, oil prices exceed $86 per barrel. For those of you who sell into the oil & gas industry, this indicates that very good times are ahead for the flowmeter markets. Pent-up demand for crude oil and refined fuels, along with pent-up demand for flowmeters, will make 2022 a very strong year for anyone involved in flowmeters and instrumentation. And the recovery of the global economy is good news for the other process industries as well. "Now is the time to prepare for this boom by ordering the one study that gives you a complete view of where we've been and where we're going by flowmeter type," concluded Dr Yoder.

There are special discounts available for orders placed up to mid-February 2022.

Powering intelligent water loss management.

ABB’s AquaMaster4 Mobile Comms flowmeter is the latest wireless solution for continuous flow measurement, the logging of accurate data and communication of information that is critical for today’s water management. Superior connectivity on 4G-LTE and NB-IoT networks enables the AquaMaster4 electromagnetic flowmeter to facilitate 60 percent lower power consumption, identifying leaks ten times faster than the market standard.

AquaMaster4 Mobile Comms with mobile phone
An estimated two-thirds of the world’s population will potentially face water shortages by 2025 (1). Yet every year, billions of liters of water are lost before ever reaching destinations. A detailed understanding of per capita demand, growth of demand and costly leakage can be achieved by accurate and timely flow data coming into and going out water operations.

As the world’s first electromagnetic flowmeter with bidirectional connectivity, AquaMaster4 Mobile Comms provides near-real time data used for intelligent water management. Operators can be hundreds of miles away and read values from the device remotely, giving them access to manage the device and their operations wherever they are located and at any time. Historical logged values of pressure, flowrate, alarms, battery life, and activity record can also be retrieved remotely.

The enhanced flowmeter is also unique in its ability to identify low-flow nighttime leaks that would otherwise be undetected. The superior accuracy and connectedness offers increased measurement and billing confidence.

By using high speed, low-cost mobile data accessible via an internal SIM card connected to a mobile network, the new AquaMaster4 Mobile Comms provides an adaptable and agile solution for deployment from virtually any location. Costs are further reduced by the flowmeter’s high battery life, which removes the need for cumbersome, costly cables and field visits.

The flowmeter also detects battery life and can be reconfigured to a suitable power mode. The device recovers itself by re-booting in case of faults and allows for task automations. It can also be renewable-powered, further extending its cost-cutting capabilities, all while the predictive maintenance schedule and enhanced diagnostics helps saves time and money.

In addition to the new connectivity of Mobile Comms, ABB’s AquaMaster4 was recently awarded a Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label for its high-tech response to the global need for water crisis mitigation and adaptation. The Solar Impulse label rewards profitable solutions that protect the environment, and AquaMaster4 has been attributed the label following an assessment based on verified standards which was performed by a panel of independent, external experts. AquaMaster4 joins the #1000solutions challenge initiative by the Solar Impulse Foundation which selects solutions that meet high standards in profitability and sustainability, presenting them to decision makers to fast-track their implementation.

Battery powered Mag Meter.

The extraction and transport of water often takes place in remote areas where there is no possibility to supply measuring instruments with power or to transmit data via wired connectivity. It is precisely for such applications that Endress+Hauser has developed the innovative Promag W 800 flowmeter with battery-powered operation. It provides maintenance-free operation for up to 15 years, as well as worldwide secure data transfer via cellular radio.

This electromagnetic flowmeter ensures not only reliable monitoring of water supply networks, but also efficient and time-saving maintenance. Leaks can be located reliably, and non-billable water losses (non-revenue water) can be avoided.

It is suitable for measuring lake, river, spring, or groundwater flows for drinking and process water, as well as for applications in distribution networks subject to fiscal metering. Likewise of great importance are consumption measurements when irrigating the frequently huge agricultural areas in climatic dry regions.

The unit has a backlit display, making it quick and easy to read measured values. Endress+Hauser’s SmartBlue app can be used to interact with the flowmeter for operations, and to provide more comprehensive data retrieval on site. It is also available with various drinking water approvals such as KTW/W270, WRAS BS6920, ACS, or NSF 61. These features combine to provide reliable monitoring of water flows and long-term economical operation:

• Seamless consumption measurements with a maximum measured error of ±0.5%.
• Exact cost allocation and billing in accordance with various laws and regulations.
• Monitoring of important characteristic variables such as water volume, totalized flow, flow limits, etc.
• Targeted leakage detection, e.g., by water balancing between two measuring points or by detecting pressure changes caused by water losses.

Secure worldwide data transmission and access
For future-oriented communication and connectivity, the Proline 800 transmitter includes everything needed within its minimal footprint: measuring electronics, batteries, data logger, and a cellular radio module to send and receive data worldwide via LTE Cat M1, LTE Cat NB1, or EGPRS. Furthermore, it can provide measured values and status messages online, such as flow, pressure, totalizer, device and process status, alarm messages, level of battery charge, and many others.

Various Endress+Hauser solution tools are available for this purpose. The Netilion Value app provides easy access to the most important measured values of a specific device. Netilion Water Network Insights, a cloud-based solution for monitoring and visualizing extensive water networks in which Promag W 800 is employed, is used to communicate with the flowmeter, store data, and provide worldwide secure access.

A built-in data logger safely stores up to 10,000 measured values or entries, with an optional extended data logger capable of storing up to 50,000 values. With a SIM card, it is also possible to integrate Promag W 800 into end user SCADA systems. For all connectivity options, global end-to-end encrypted data transmission provides maximum cybersecurity.

Long-term operation underground or under water
Flowmeters are often exposed to heat, dust, and climatic variations—and are often installed under water or underground. The robust and fully welded Promag W sensor operates in such environmental conditions without any problems.

The Promag W can be ordered with a specially certified corrosion protection (EN ISO 12944) and IP68 (Type 6P) degree of protection, which completely prevents water ingress. Both order options guarantee long-term operation, even in salty environments, or in climatic regions with significant fluctuations in humidity and/or temperature.

Heartbeat Technology – for reliable measurements and maximum operational safety In fiscal metering transactions, the smallest inaccuracies in flow measurement can cause massive shortfalls in annual billing, either for suppliers or for consumers. In the 24/7/365 operations common to the water industry, however, it is seldom realistic to remove flowmeters for test measurements or recalibration, particularly in large water pipelines.

To address this issue, integrated Heartbeat Technology makes it possible to monitor Promag flowmeters continuously and verify their functional capability at the press of a button, thus providing evidence of consistently high measurement accuracy within specifications. This enables assured compliance with regulations applying to fiscal metering measuring points, without interrupting the process. If Promag W 800 is part of the Netilion Water Network Insights solution, users can initiate and view this metrologically traceable verification directly over the cloud, anytime and from anywhere.

Verification logs are generated automatically and stored securely, providing the data often needed for later audits, or for drafting documentation to comply with statutory requirements. In consultation with regulatory authorities, this feature may enable legally required calibration intervals to be extended. For water system operators, this provides significantly lower costs when operating measuring points for fiscal metering.
